CALL
ANNUAL COURTHOUSE TOUR &
JUDICIAL RECEPTION
An Essential Event for Bexar County Lawyers
Thursday, October 17, 2013
The Courthouse Tour has become
an essential seminar for young
lawyers beginning their practice in
Bexar County. Lawyers and law
students are encouraged to participate
and benefit from instruction on the
practical aspects of courthouse
procedure.
The Courthouse Tour Seminar
will take place from 1:00 pm to 5:00
pm at the Bexar County Courthouse
and Justice Center with topics of
discussion to include Bexar County
presiding and monitoring system,
motion practice, criminal court
appointments and practice, local
appellate practice, the district clerk’s
office, probate courts and much
more.
Attendees will receive insight
into litigation practice from local
judges and attorneys, in addition to a
beneficial course book, outlining all
the materials that will be covered that
day. The cost of the Courthouse
Tour will be $30.00 per person or
$25.00 for law students, with
approval for 4 hours of CLE credit
including 1 hour of ethics credit.
As always, the Courthouse Tour
will be followed by a Judicial
Reception beginning at 5:30 pm at
Club Giraud. Judges, lawyers and
law students can enjoy hors
d’oeuvres, cold beverages and
conversation between the judiciary,
bar and students outside of the
courtroom and classroom. A favorite
event of our local judges and
attorneys, the judicial reception has
been very successful in the past and
is expected to be well attended this
year.
The cost of the Judicial
Reception will be $30.00. If both the
Courthouse Tour and the Judicial
Reception are attended, the cost will
be $55.00 per person, or $50.00 for
law student.
If you have attended these events
in the past, SAYLA asks that you
relay the news of these events to any
new attorneys in your office or that
you know who have just moved to
the San Antonio area, in order to
promote attendance.
If you are interested in
participating or sponsoring any of
these events, you can contact Steven
Rouse at (210) 731-6409, Caroleene
Hardee at (210) 554-5294, or Marc
Whyte at (210) 582-0225. SAYLA
looks forward to a great turnout from
attorneys and members of our
judiciary this year at both the
Courthouse Tour and the Judicial
Reception!

Summer 2013
WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR IN SAYLA
Welcome to SAYLA and thank you for being a member. SAYLA is an organization of
young and recently licensed attorneys. But more importantly, SAYLA is an organization
for young and recently licensed attorneys. As President of the Association, it is my goal
during my tenure to ensure that SAYLA is doing everything we can to assist new attorneys
as they transition to the profession. We have been doing this very well for over 60 years
with regular networking and social events, the annual Courthouse Tour and Judicial
Reception, SAYLA Scramble, and the monthly CLE luncheons.
In recent years, however, the legal professional across the nation, including San Antonio
and the surrounding communities, has changed. Whether in reaction to the economic shifts
or other factors, we must realize that the profession has changed. Years ago, many law
students were hired by firms – small to large – right out of law school. Nowadays, the
majority of graduates are hanging out a shingle and forming their own law firms (often
while simultaneously searching for more stable employment with more experienced
attorneys.)
As you may have noticed when you were in law school, the legal professional is also
welcoming many “non-traditional” members to its ranks. Some tried one career only to
find law after a decade or so. Others are choosing the profession as a second career. And
other are two income households with children of all ages.
With these changes in mind, this year SAYLA will begin to develop additional programs
and resources to adapt to the changing profession, while also continuing the successful
programs and activities that we have honed over the past 65 years.
Attorney Resources. Based on input that we hope to get from our members, SAYLA’s
aim is to increase the substantive resources that we make available for members—forms,
law practice tips, sample documents, targeted CLEs, and more. If you have an idea, please
contact Andrew Froelich at andrewfroelich@gmail.com.
Family Oriented Activities. Building on the success of Family Fun Day, SAYLA will be
adding new activities centered around the busy lives of our members who balance work
and families. Patty Vargas, President-Elect, law firm partner, wife, and mother of two will
be heading up this initiative. If you would like to get involved, please contact Patty at
pvargas@duncanlaw.com.
We hope that these new initiatives, in addition to the many other events we’ll continue to
plan, will meet the needs of all SAYLA members. As President, I want to hear from you to
ensure that your needs are being met. Feel free to contact me at any time at
law@denuccio.com or by phone at 210-325-4442. I look forward to serving you during the
year.

ATTORNEY RESOURCES
SAYLA's newest committee is looking for members
to join and set direction for years to come! The new
Attorney Resources committee will focus on
developing substantive resources for young attorneys,
including forms, templates and links to other resources.
The committee will determine what resources are
needed, how to best grant and regulate access, and
continue to update and revise the resources accordingly.
Committee will work with SABA and the mentor/
mentee program, as well as developing program
opportunities with St. Mary's Law Alumni, and much
more. This is a brand new committee, so this is your
chance to lay the groundwork.
All interested should e-mail Andrew Froelich at
andrewfroelich@gmail.com.
SABA MENTOR/MENTEE PROGRAM
For the past few years, the San Antonio Bar
Association has coordinated the SABA Mentor/Mentee
Program to assist newly licensed attorneys as they
begin their careers. Many of the mentees are SAYLA
members Many of the mentors are former mentees and
also SAYLA members. We encourage all SAYLA
members to get involved either as a mentee or mentor.
CLE credit is provided for most of the programs which
cover a variety of topics. To join, please contact Robin
Teague at robin@teaguelaw.com.

PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG LAWYERS (AND OLD LAYWERS)
SAYLA is proud to coordinate and promote Pro Bono opportunities for our members by partnering with the San
Antonio Bar Association, Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid and St. Mary’s University School of Law.
COMMUNITY JUSTICE PROGRAM
ASK-A-LAWYER
The Community Justice Program (“CJP”) is a
collaborative effort by the San Antonio Bar Association
and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid to provide free
neighborhood-based legal services to individuals who
may not otherwise have access to the legal system. CJP
organizes clinics in Family Law, Wills, and for
Veterans.
Thursday, August 22, 2013
Presa Community Center, 3721 South Presa, 78210
6pm-8pm (please arrive by 5:45)
Snacks and refreshments are provided.
Ask-A-Lawyer is hosted by Catholic Charities of San
Antonio and St. Mary’s University School of Law. Law
student volunteers interview individuals from the community about various real world legal issues. Next, the
law students consult with licensed attorneys about the
facts and legal issues presented. Finally, based on the
student’s and attorney’s assessments, individuals are offered legal information, and, if necessary, are referred to
legal aid or to other attorneys who will work on a sliding
scale payment plan or may take the case pro bono. Most
cases result in information only.
