and processes.
The goals of Algonquin’s Office of Applied Research and Innovation (ARI) are:
to enhance student training and preparedness for the workplace; to provide
professional development opportunities for College faculty and staff; and to
assist entrepreneurs, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), and large
companies to develop products, processes, and services that will contribute to
their success. ARI currently has five Applied Research Centres (see end pages of
this brochure). Each focusses on a specific subject matter domain of relevance
to regional industry. Through collaborative projects with industry partners, the
Applied Research Centres leverage College strengths to stimulate innovation, job
creation, and economic growth.

29. Constructing a Bioswale for the Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre
The aim of the Shaw Woods Outdoor Education (SWOEC) Bioswale Project is to construct a Bioswale to
filter runoff from the SWOEC parking lot. It is often the case that the natural flow of water and nutrients
is disrupted by anthropocentric activities. This can cause critical changes in the surrounding area and
without some kind of mitigation can be catastrophic to an ecosystem. The Bioswale, which includes three
underground pipes that divert runoff downhill toward a Bioswale (series of native plant species ideal for
filtering potentially harmful material), stone, wood chips, and other base layer materials, is an effort to
protect the surrounding ecosystem, including the Snake River, which is adjacent to the SWOEC, from further
anthropogenic disturbances.
FULL SPECTRA Centre
Algonquin College’s Full Spectra Centre (FSC) supports projects that develop
and commercialize novel hi-tech devices and processes. The focus is on
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as well as lasers and
photonics. The FSC was launched under an NSERC CCI grant and is now in its
fourth year of operation.
Principal Investigator: Sarah Hall
Students: McKenzie Evans, Eric Babin, Kaitlyn Etmanskie
30. Lake Bottom Sediment Sampling on Muskrat Lake
The overall theme of this project is to determine what lies at the bottom of Muskrat Lake. The low-laying
sediment at the bottom of Muskrat Lake could yield some clues as to whether the lake is improving or
degrading. Muskrat Lake is known as a very productive lake with respect to fishing and recreation. Local,
provincial, and federal authorities have, and continue to be, concerned with the state of the lake. Nutrient
loading, primarily phosphorous and nitrogen, from its many tributaries has compromised the integrity of the
lake. The purpose of this project is to collect lake bottom sediment to determine current phosphorous levels,
how much nutrient loading has occurred over time, and whether the lake is naturally eutrophic.

DESIGN
CENTRE
HEALTH &
WELLNESS
RESEARCH CENTRE
The Design Centre
Health & Wellness RESEARCH Centre
The Design Centre, partially funded by NSERC, is focused on engaging industry
partners in collaborative research projects focused on User Experience (UX)
design. The term “User Experience” is based on the idea that design decisions
should be based on the needs and wants of actual users. At first glance, it seems
self-evident that this should be so. Sadly, in practice this is often not the case.
Fortunately, UX design has evolved so that design decisions are based on how
users perceive, interact with and feel about using any interface used to control
an underlying technology. This applies to user interfaces for desktop computers,
tablets, smartphones, interactive TV’s, and other devices. Design Centre projects
aim to create user interfaces that are simple in concept, conspicuous in value,
and self-evident in operation. Smart companies like Apple know that they can
gain a significant advantage over their competitors by offering a product that
can deliver a superior user experience. In the words of the late Steve Jobs, “It is a
mistake to think that design is just look and feel….Design is how it works.”
12
The Algonquin College Health and Wellness Research Centre launched in
January 2013 with a focus on medical devices and technology and funding from
NSERC. The Centre leverages the College’s talented faculty and students to
enable external clients from industry and community partners to develop and
advance innovative health related technologies. The Centre provides access to
a wide mix of disciplines across the college in key areas including Business and
Marketing, Advanced Technology Development, Media and Design and Health
and Community Studies among many others.

APPLIED RESEARCH AT ALGONQUIN’S REGIONAL CAMPUSES
The focus of the Construction Research Centre is in improving evidence-based
decision making in building design and in developing collaboration tools to better
connect people within the industry to improve process efficiency. The first theme
of focus includes the use of digital sensors to measure a building’s performance
and integrating that information into building models to predict the cost to
maintain and operate the structures. The second theme of focus seeks to address
the need to adopt new technologies within the industry and to connect the many
participants involved in a build.
Algonquin College’s Pembroke and Perth campuses have growing applied
research programs. These campuses bring together College professors and
students with local industries, businesses, and community organizations. Projects
foster sustainable economic development and technology adoption while
providing students real-world experience in their community.
