Currently, jobs in this sector account for only 2% of the national employment. By 2020,
however, it is expected to create 275,400 jobs and contribute RM180.2 billion to the
country’s national income.2
Among the main drivers for this sector is Islamic finance which is outpacing the supply of
talent. It is forecast that jobs from this service will reach 56,000 in the next 10 years.
Supporting the country’s leadership in Islamic finance is the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), the
country’s version of Wall Street right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. TRX will bring together
local and overseas financial institutions and other corporations in one economic hub.3

Islamic Finance
The world needs 50,000 Islamic finance professionals per year.4 In the local scene, we need
about 35,000 qualified Islamic finance professionals by 2030, a report from the Islamic
Banking & Finance Institute Malaysia (IBFIM).5 Growing global interest on Islamic finance
services has spurred the demand for more of these talents. In Malaysia, talent shortage in
Islamic finance is most notable in the areas of syariah expertise.6 Approximately 5,000
graduates of Islamic banking and finance are produced globally each year, which is not
enough to keep up with increasing demand.7
Malaysia is among the top 3 providers of Islamic finance talents, based on Thomson
Reuter’s findings.8 We currently have 18 universities and 50 institutions providing this
course. To beef up talent in the finance industry, Bank Negara Malaysia has set up the
International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) to provide academic and
professional qualifications in Islamic finance. It offers master’s and doctoral programmes in
Islamic finance. Similarly, IBFIM is devoted to improving Islamic banking and finance by
increasing the pool of bankers and Takaful operators who are knowledgeable and
competent.

The growing presence of low-cost carriers (LCCs) with their cheap fares and new routes has
spiked the need for more airplanes. More maintenance, repair and operations (MRO)
services like fixing and doing routine checkups will be required to prevent troubles from
arising and keep the aircrafts working properly.
Seeing the potential of the MRO industry, the government’s Economic Transformation
Programme (ETP) by Pemandu has identified it as one of the sectors in the business
services entry of National Key Economic Areas (NKEA).
In effort to make Malaysia a regional MRO hub, initiatives to improve airport infrastructure
through land expansions have been created for a more conducive operating environment.

industry will create 20,720 jobs and contribute to the
country’s wealth by more than RM13 million by 2020.14
Malaysia is currently among the top three countries in Asia Pacific for MRO services.
According to the Ministry of Human Resource, we need to produce 16,000 MRO
engineers a year. However, in the last 15 years we have only 3,000 licensed engineers.15
At the moment, aircraft maintenance engineers who specialise in helicopter turbines
and avionics are rare and in demand. This demand is driven by the growing use of
helicopters for both civil and government markets, and the fact that most aircrafts have
avionics involved in everything including engines and flight controls.

EDUCATION
17
Did you know?
Malaysia is ranked 11th in the most preferred
17
destinations for education among foreign students.
Over 90,000 international students from Asia and
the Middle East have chosen Malaysia to have their
education. By 2020, Malaysia aims to be a regional
hub for 200,000 international students.
Taking off @ Nilai U
Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
is highly popular among school leavers.
Nilai University’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance
Engineering programme is an extremely popular
choice among school leavers. This is down to several
reasons. Firstly, Nilai University’s programme
prepares students for the all-important European
Agency Safety Agency’s B1-1 examinations, which is
the gateway towards becoming a fully licensed
aircraft maintenance engineer. This status is
achieved upon the successful completion of the
EASA modules and accumulating approximately five
years of relevant work experience. Once certified as
fully-licensed aircraft maintenance engineer, he or
she is able to certify the airworthiness of an aircraft.
Such qualified individuals are highly sought after,
with EASA qualifications being the preferred
qualification in most parts of the world
(http://easa.europa.eu/home.php).
Secondly, Nilai University (Nilai U) has a purpose-built
hangar on campus featuring two aircraft for students
to hone their skills on. The aircraft provide students
the opportunity to put theory into practice and to
gain essential hands on experience before
embarking on their industrial placements. The
hangar also features audio-visual rooms, workshops
and lecture theatres, making Nilai U one of the best
equipped institutions offering this programme.
Thirdly, students from the Diploma in Aircraft
Maintenance Engineering programme can also
further their studies onto a one-year top up
Advanced Diploma programme. Kingston University,
UK has recognised that the Diploma and Advanced
Diploma programmes as being equivalent to its
Degree in Aircraft Engineering. Thus, students who
complete both the Diploma and Advanced Diploma
programmes as well as the relevant bridging
modules, will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft
Engineering from Kingston University, UK. In essence,
students can gain a degree in this highly-specialised
field in just three-and-a-half years.
Last but not least, students are attracted to Nilai U’s
Diploma programme because a six-month
On-The-Job-Training (OJT) stint with some of the
industry’s heavy hitters is built into the syllabus. Nilai
U’s industry partners include Air Asia, Air Asia X and
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The OJT provides students
with the opportunity to gain essential work
experience as well as a chance to network with
industry players. Nilai U students will also benefit
from having a full varsity experience mingling with
students from other disciplines and from various
cultural backgrounds.

Careers in education are looking favourable in Malaysia after the government abolished
the 40% quota for local students in international schools. Overall, open positions are
increasing, salaries are fairly competitive and there are a variety of advancement options.
An education qualification can offer you a variety of career paths including positions like
language instructor, curriculum developer or university professor.
Growth Areas
Early childhood education
By year 2020, the country will need 30,000 qualified preschool teachers.18
At the moment, only 7% of preschool teachers possess formal training and certification.19
According to the government’s Economic Transformation Programme by Pemandu, about
93% of teachers do not posses the right qualification for this segment.20
The Malaysian government has placed a strong emphasis on Early Childhood Care and
Education by introducing policies and programmes that make early childhood programmes
more accessible. By 2020, all teachers are expected to possess a first degree before joining
the teaching profession.
Government schools
Malaysian government schools want to increase their quality of teaching by hiring more
qualified teachers. The government recently announced that the minimum requirement for
SPM leavers who wish to join the vocation is 7As in their SPM exam; previously the
requirement was 3As in SPM.
There are two ways to get into government schools - SPM leavers can take the Kursus
Perguruan Lepasan SPM (KPLSPM) and college graduates can take the Kursus Perguruan
Lepasan Ijazah (KPLI).

KPLSPM – SPM leavers can take this 18-month course which
prepares them for the Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda
Perguruan (PISMP). PISMP is a continuation of KPLSPM. It will
award as students a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching upon
completion. This course takes four years to finish and is
usually offered in late-March and will be announced in the
newspapers. After the programme, students need to go
through a job interview before getting assigned to a
government school.
KPLI – Fresh university graduates who wish to teach in
government primary schools can take this course. They need
to pass an interview first before being able to train in one of
the 27 IPGM. At the end of the programme, students must serve in any school or
education institutes, including those in rural areas, as required by the government. This
two and a half-year course is offered between the months of September and October.
Private schools
In the private school sector, there is a shortage of good teachers
specialised in English, Maths, Science and Bahasa Malaysia
according to the government’s Economic Transformation
Programme by Pemandu. Furthermore, the abolishment of the
40% quota for locals to enroll in international schools has paved
the way for more international and private schools in the
country. To date, Malaysia has approximately 40 private and
more than 90 international schools.21
Leading Players
Taylor’s Education Group (TEG) – a leading private education group with over 20,000
students. Its members include Nexus International School, Garden International School,
Australian International School Malaysia and Sri Garden International School.
Ekuinas – one of Malaysia’s largest education groups. It owns Unitar International
University, Cosmopoint Group and APIIT Education Group which in turn has Asia Pacific
International School and Asia Pacific Smart School.

developed to provide funding studies at
postgraduate level.23 These programmes
aim to produce 60,000 Malaysians PhD
holders by the year 2023.
Currently, a postgraduate qualification is not necessary to become a lecturer, but as
universities improve their global ranking, a PhD qualification becomes important. The
qualifications that you need are a good bachelor’s degree, a masters and a PhD in the
relevant field. Moreover, those who want to become a senior lecturer or associate
professor must have sufficient teaching and publication experience.

Civil Engineering
Civil engineers are important in
forming vital infrastructure such
as tunnels, bridges, airports,
dams, harbours, power plants,
and sewage systems. Malaysia’s
construction boom coupled with
numerous governmental mega
projects such as the Tun Razak
Exchange (TRX), Menara Warisan
Merdeka, Bukit Bintang City
Centre, Rubber Research Insistute,
and Bandar Malaysia will require
the expertise of civil engineers.
In Penang , the construction and
renovation industry is expected to
generate RM6 billion worth of jobs over the next decade. This industrial growth is driven by
new residential and commercial schemes. Similarly, the demand for more office space in
the Klang Valley means more civil engineers will be hired to make the projects more
cost-efficient and safe.29
Overseas, many Malaysian-based construction companies see opportunities in China and
the Middle East. According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp. (MATRADE),
many infrastructure projects will be built in China in the coming years. Projects include
bridges, roads, highways, property development projects such as hospitals, schools and

There are certain areas in the healthcare industry that is in need of more talents and
among them are pharmacy, dentistry and medical specialist. Driving demand is the
country’s aging population and growing medical tourism. In 2010, about 400,000 health
tourists came to Malaysia and it is expected to hit 2 million by 2020.31 Here are more
interesting facts:
There is only 1 dentist for every 6,000 Malaysians. In the next 7 years, we will need at
least 5,000 more dentists to achieve the target of 1 to 3,000.32
Similarly, there’s a shortage of pharmacists in the country. In 2013, there were 10,250
registered pharmacists. Currently, there is 1 pharmacist to 2,947 patients.33 The target
for 2016 is to improve the pharmacy-patient ratio to 1 to 2,000.
Moreover, medical specialists are in demand. Doctors who specialize in cardiothoracic
and hepatobiliary surgeries and other new infectious, lifestyle and chronic diseases
are needed.34

Pharmacy
One of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies,
Ranbaxy Laboratories and Biocon will be setting up
manufacturing facilities in Malaysia to cater to the
growing needs of people in Malaysia and other
regions. With such investments, Malaysia’s output of

to 3 billion units.

doctors into experts in a year.”

Malaysian hospitality and tourism industry is expanding and receiving strong support
from the government because this is a major source of national income and employment
to the people. Malaysia attracts 25 million tourist arrivals per year, contributing RM60
billion in receipts.37 With that said the need for training in tourism and hospitality in
upgrading the competencies level of workforce to participate in the industry is very
important. In 2010, 1.7 million people are currently employed in this sector, this account
for nearly 14% of all jobs.38
To become one of world’s top tourism destinations, the government has identified the
country’s strengths and potentials through 12 entry point projects (EPPs).39 Generally,
these EPPs aim to position Malaysia into a:
Shopping haven for competitively priced luxury items
A biodiversity hub for nature lovers and adventurers
Cruise and golf destination for businessmen and retirees
World stage for popular live performances and international events and conventions
Travel hub with well-connected flights across the region
Place for wellness, relaxation and recreation

Specialised personal chefs
Specialty chefs are becoming in demand. Specialised personal chefs are people who can
create solutions for people who follow restrictive diet meals. This type of chefs charges
more for their services and they’re in high demand partly because they are only a few of
them. A growing number of Malaysians are cutting back on gluten and others are
avoiding dairy, soy, sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and carbohydrates.

Music – The career choice in the 21st
Century
ICOM is a college ‘by musicians, for musicians’,
says Irene Savaree, CEO and President of
ICOM. “Because of this, our primary advantage
is that we are a one-stop centre for everything
music.”
The college’s second advantage is music
networking, where students get to interact
and engage directly with faculty and music
industry professionals, she continues. “Most of
our students are absorbed into the jobs
market prior to graduation. The industry
comes to ICOM to look for employees and
since the music industry is a networked-based
industry, this is a great advantage.”
Music technology plays a big part in teaching
and learning at ICOM; students receive an
industry-level technology suite for download
on their computers when they enrol. The
technology acts as a tool to make the lessons
and practice sessions become vibrant, and
enables students to make music anywhere
and at anytime instead of being limited to
college facilities.
A career in music
“These days, we find an increasing number of
parents encouraging and supporting their
teenage children to get a degree in music at
ICOM. The large majority of the graduates
from our bachelor’s degree programmes have
told us that their parents were instrumental in
them choosing to make music their major.
The government has also established three
arts colleges in Kuching, Johor and KL, which
speaks volumes about public perception of a
career in the music industry,” says Savaree.
The Malaysian music industry is large, and
though it is segmented by language, the job
market is dynamic; there are more than
enough jobs to be filled. “But the current
problem in Malaysia is the lack of
qualifications and know-how,” reveals Savaree.
“With globalisation and internet technology,
there is an open market for industrious and
talented musicians to make successful
careers. The opportunities are out there
waiting.”
This is where ICOM come in – providing
knowledge and instruction and producing
knowledge workers for each niche in the
industry. According to Savaree, a large
majority of ICOM graduates have taken up the
market share in independent start-up music
enterprises, which speaks to the great
potential of forging successful careers in the
industry.
Getting in
To enter into ICOM’s programmes, students
are required to have the minimum statutory
requirements of five SPM credits for degrees,
three SPM credits for diplomas, and one SPM
credit for certificate level courses. There is
also an audition - students applying for
degree programmes must demonstrate their
performance skills on a principal instrument in
playing scales and arpeggios, improvising on a
12-bar blues piece, and performing in a range
of style idioms. The ability to read music
notation is not a prerequisite, as students can
learn during their course.
Music is an art form and it takes much time,
dedication, and patience to hone this craft,
she continues. It is a powerful tool that can
affect people in diverse ways. A student who
makes the choice to get into this industry
should understand and respect this, and
strive to produce the best quality he or she
can. Together with ICOM, they can create and
nurture a livelihood.

The Malaysian government reported that it will
need to hire over 60,000 professionals including
engineers and geologists by 2020.48 Worldwide,
the Oil and Gas (O&G) sector needs to recruit
120,000 new employees over the next decade.49

Oil and gas production is valuable to Malaysia’s economic growth. In 2009, it contributed
20% of the country’s total income.50 With the help of the government as well as tax breaks,
many O&G companies have been established in the past two years. These companies are
pushing hard to attract both local and overseas employees to this interesting and well
remunerated industry.
The Petronas RAPID project in Pengerang, Johor will require 10,000 qualified and skilled
welders, 1,000 blasters and painters, and hundreds of specialised skilled engineers such as
corrosion engineers, piping engineers, welding engineers, designer engineers as well as
supervisors and technicians.
Growth Areas
Engineering services
Most of the local engineering positions
are still filled by expatriates. Fortunately, a
growing number of Malaysian engineers
are filling these positions due to their
extensive overseas exposure and
experience.
The government works with key industry
players to promote the services of Malaysian engineers and identify areas where
institutions can play a role in enhancing
and complementing the local O&G industry. For example the Association of
Malaysian Oil and Gas Engineering
Consultants (MOGEC) helps develop

The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at
Heriot-Watt University is committed to the
development and delivery of training
programmes to help the international petroleum
industry meet the global demand for the
exploitation of subsurface oil and gas resources.
Their high-calibre academic team fosters the
growing reputation for teaching and research
activity in a multi-disciplinary environment that is
essential to the oil and gas industry.

regional hub for engineering services for the O&G industry. The country has the potential
to provide engineering design services, project management, construction supervision,
quality assurance and control, contracting and procurement.
Petronas - is a national oil and gas company of Malaysia and is wholly-owned by the
government. It is also listed as a Fortune Global 500 company.
Highly-skilled jobs
Exxon Mobil - is a multinational oil and gas corporation and is the world’s largest refiner
with a daily production of 3.9 million barrels of oil.
There are jobs in the O&G industry that do not necessarily
require a university degree qualification. Those who are
new to the industry are usually provided with on-the-job
training by O&G companies through workshops and
seminars to develop skills that match the type of job they
seek.
The present graduates from local Malaysian universities
are unable to fulfil the requirements of the O&G industry.
The kind of skills required for the O&G sector tends to be
very specific with ample training and skills development.
Hence organisations such as the Institute of Materials
Malaysia (IMM) are developing more local skills in
metallurgy, corrosion, coatings and welding to provide
employers with highly skilled workers.
Jobs currently in-demand:
Welder – joins pieces of metal permanently through a
welding processes; they also repair metal parts.
Welding Inspector – conducts tests to find any defects
or cracks that can adversely affect the safety of the
structure.
Blaster/Painter – ensures that all the blasting and
painting equipment is kept in top working conditions.
Painter Supervisor – responsible for the supervision of
all painting and blasting activities, making sure that all
tasks are carried out safely.
Corrosion Technician – inspects, repairs and regulates a
metal pipeline’s structural integrity.
Corrosion Engineers – analyses engineered materials
and finds solutions that will stop or slow down the
effects of corrosion.
Skilled technicians can earn from RM3,000 to RM7,000 monthly upon securing their
technical certificates. Industry reports show a potential growth in the welding industry, with
oil companies desperate for experienced welders to repair and maintain rigs. Most
certification courses do not have entry requirements though being proficient in English is a
bonus in the O&G industry.
Shell - is a global company that has more than 30 refineries and produces 3.3 million
barrels of oil every day.
