Will’s Words
How William Shakespeare
Changed the Way You Talk
Jane Sutcliffe
Illustrated by John Shelley
“Speak the speech, I pray you,
as I pronounced it to you,
trippingly on the tongue . . .”
—from Hamlet, Act III, Sc. ii
Jane, however, embraces her dilemma, writing
about Shakespeare, his plays, and his famous
phrases with glee. What better words are there
to use to write about the greatest writer in the
English language than his very own? As readers
will discover, “the long and the short of it” is
this: Will changed the English language forever.
Backmatter includes an author’s note, a
bibliography, and a timeline.
2016 commemorates the 400th anniversary
of Shakespeare’s passing.
JANE SUTCLIFFE is author of Stone Giant: Michelangelo’s David and
How He Came to Be, The White House Is Burning: August 24, 1814,
and more than two dozen other books for children. Jane lives in
Tolland, Connecticut.
JOHN SHELLEY grew up near Shakespeare’s birthplace at Stratfordupon-Avon. He has illustrated more than forty children’s books,
including Stone Giant: Michelangelo’s David and How He Came to Be
and Family Reminders. John lives in Norwich, England.

When Jane Sutcliffe sets out to write a book
about William Shakespeare and the Globe
Theatre, in her own words, she runs into a
problem: Will’s words keep popping up all over
the place! What’s an author to do? After all,
Will is responsible for such familiar phrases as
“what’s done is done” and “too much of a good
thing.” He even turned “household words” into
household words.
Living Fossils
Clues to the Past
Caroline Arnold
Illustrated by Andrew Plant
You haven’t changed a bit!

Discover why animals like the dragonfly and
the nautilus have changed so little over time,
while other animals evolved or went extinct.

alternate profiles between a prehistoric creature
in its native environment and its contemporary
living-fossil counterpart. An amazing way to
experience the ancient past!

with her daddy inspire Kenya to use her old,
broken toys and other neglected items to make
art with her family. Now she’s prepared to

Samurai Rising
The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune
Pamela S. Turner
Illustrated by Gareth Hinds
Minamoto Yoshitsune should not have
been a samurai. But his story is legend in
this real-life saga.
This epic tale of warriors and bravery, rebellion and
revenge, reads like a novel, but is the true story of the
greatest samurai in Japanese history.
“A rollicking loose-cannon actionhero story, rich with epic battles and
vivid details of samurai life.”
—Steven Sheinkin,
author of Bomb and
The Notorious Benedict Arnold
“Ho-hum history? Hardly! Here is
an exhilarating, wild-ride of an
adventure story. And it’s all true.”
PAMELA S. TURNER is the author of Life on Earth—and Beyond, The Dolphins of
Shark Bay (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), and the Orbis Pictus Honor Book The
Frog Scientist (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Pamela lives in Oakland, California.
Back in college GARETH HINDS sketched legendary scenes from Yoshitsune’s
life—just for fun. Today he is the creator of highly acclaimed graphic-novel
adaptions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, Beowulf, and other
classics (Candlewick). Gareth lives in Washington D.C.

When Yoshitsune was just a baby, his father went to
war with a rival samurai family—and lost. His father
was killed, his mother captured, and his brothers sent
away. Yoshitsune was raised in his enemy’s household
until he was sent to live in a monastery. He grew up
skinny and small. Not the warrior type. But he did
inherit his family pride and when the time came for the
Minamoto to rise up against their enemy once again,
Yoshitsune was there. His daring feats—such as
storming a fortress by riding on horseback down the
side of a cliff—and his glorious victory at sea, secured
Yoshitsune’s place in history and his story is still being
told centuries later.
Gabe
A Story of Me, My Dog, and the 1970s
Shelley Gill
Illustrated by Marc Scheff
Coming of age in the Age of Aquarius.
Middle Grade • Spring 2016
Author Shelley Gill was seventeen-years-old in 1972 and a
free spirit protesting the Vietnam War, marching for civil
rights, and finding her way in a changing world. While
volunteering in the medical tent at a gathering, Shelley met
Gabe—an abandoned blue merle-husky-mix puppy. Gabe
quickly became Shelley’s best friend and protector. They
traveled the country together, hitchhiking to New Orleans,
Indiana, New York City, the Rocky Mountains, and
eventually to Alaska, where they stayed.
Shelley Gill has lived full-force, and her spirit and attitude
are ever-present in this autobiography—a snapshot of a
turbulent time in American history, as well as a love-letter
to a cherished dog.

at his rural retreat. Months pass and the musicians long to return to
their homes and families. Haydn composes a symphony that beautifully
expresses their anger, frustration, and sadness, convincing the prince
that it is time to go home.
