AWARD-WINNING BEACHES
Mention almost any accolade in the travel
industry and Clearwater Beach, as well as it’s
surrounding beaches, has won it. From being
named “Best City Beach” by Conde Nast Traveler
to being designated a Blue Wave Beach by the
Clean Beaches Council, the region has garnered
numerous awards. Among these are:
USA Today
“Top Ten” list of best beaches from
Maine to Hawaii
Travel Channel
“Number One Activity Beach” in the nation
“Dr. Beach”
America’s Best Beaches List named the 2008
winner Caladesi Island State Park in nearby
Dunedin and the 2009 winner Fort DeSoto
Park in St. Petersburg
FamilyTravelForum.com
One of the twelve “Top Baby Beach Getaways”
in the country, and the only beach on the list
from Florida
Clearwater Beach appeals to people of all ages
and interests as shown by the fact that Fodor’s
Travel Publications named it as one of America’s
top family beaches and the Orlando Sentinel
lauded it as second only to Miami’s South Beach
as the place to go if you’re single. Whether you
stay for the day or the season you will not be
disappointed in what the Clearwater area (both
beachside and mainland) has in store for you.
BEACH WALK
Beach Walk is a broad, winding promenade
surrounded by resorts, beautiful white sand,
entertainment and artwork. It offers a unique
environment for pedestrians to enjoy a view of
the Gulf of Mexico beaches dotted with palm
trees, with resting areas and lush landscaping
bordering the meandering two-lane drive.
SUNSETS AT PIER 60
DAILY FESTIVAL
Every evening the place to be is Pier 60, a 1,050foot fishing pier. For two hours before sunset and
two hours after, people of all ages mingle; street
performers and musicians entertain; and local
artisans sell handmade treasures. Sunset Cinema
shows free movies every Saturday and Sunday
at dusk. PIER 60 PARK, with a covered children’s
playground, has two play areas with age
appropriate equipment - one for preschoolers
and the other for 8 to 12 year olds.

FUN AROUND
THE WATER
As you approach Clearwater Beach from the mainland, one of the first sights you
see is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a renowned marine life center that
specializes in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured sea creatures. The
aquarium is host to Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays
and other marine life. Visitors can touch one of the dolphins, watch an open-air
performance, sail on their popular ecoboat tour or work with the trainers in an
interactive session. Come meet Winter, who lost her tail in an accident, but is now
healthy and swimming freely with her prosthetic tail. She is even learning how to
paint, and is currently starring in her own 3D movie, “Dolphin Tale.” Scheduled
to open fall 2011. This movie is about the friendship of a boy and dolphin whose
tail was lost in a crab trap. It is directed by Charles Martin Smith and other stars
include: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Harry Connick Jr.

Home to the largest fishing fleet on Florida’s
west coast, the Clearwater Municipal
Marina provides 23 slips for transient boaters
as well as many services including: a post office,
retail, restaurants and bait shop. Berthed in
the marina are boats that offer a myriad of
activities: from fishing, sightseeing, sailing,
speed, “hands on” marine life adventures,
to dining and dancing and parasailing. For
boaters who want to visit downtown, there is
a new dockage area near Coachman Park
that just opened in 2010.
Clearwater is home to two yacht clubs.
The Clearwater Yacht Club has a full
calendar of events, including parties and
regattas; a restaurant; and slips to dock your
boat. Along with the usual yacht club amenities,
Carlouel Yacht Club has two swimming pools,
lighted tennis courts, a restaurant and a lounge.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular
pastimes and there are more than ten artificial
inshore and offshore reefs along the coast. These
reefs are especially attractive to grouper, snapper,
grunt, mackerel, amberjack, cobia, barracuda and
baitfish. They are also home to coral, sponge and
a wide variety of other underwater creatures.
Explore the former Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn,
several tugboats (one 100 years old), a shrimp
boat, World War II tanks and more. Snorkeling
reefs are located closer to shore.
A Florida fishing license is required for nonFlorida residents 16 years and older. There are
two licenses, freshwater and saltwater, depending
on the type of fish caught. Licenses may be
purchased at Pier 60, the tax collector’s office,

CLEARWATER
NATURALLY
From dolphins to bald eagles . . .Clearwater’s natural beauty is breathtaking.
Yes, Virginia, there are other creatures in
Florida besides Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck
and Goofy. And not just palm trees grow here.
Manatees inhabit our waterways, feeding on
aquatic plants. North American river otters play
in brackish creeks and streams. Everyone’s
favorite, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, can be
seen cavorting with beauty and grace. Alligators
can be found in some freshwater areas of the
county. Avid birdwatchers can see a variety of
avian species, including osprey, egret, heron,
gull, white ibis, roseate spoonbill, bald eagle and
brown pelican. Fifteen sites throughout Pinellas
County have been officially designated as
portions of the Great Florida Birding Trail.
Ninety five acres are located on Sand Key, a
barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and
the Florida Mainland. It features two distinct
areas, a beach and a park. Sand Key Park
houses the base of operations for the artificial
reef program, a cooperation program to build a
reef in the Gulf. Natural communities include a
beach where sea turtles annually deposit eggs,
the Clearwater Aquarium takes responsibility for
these nests and keeps statistics. A salt marsh
with viewing benches further enhances the park,
where several birds nest and feed. Dogs are
welcome in the dog park but not on the beach.

Unspoiled and protected, Brooker Creek
Preserve is an 8,500 acre home to more
than 160 bird species, 20 amphibians, 50
reptiles and 40 mammals. Its Environmental
Education Center features four major
experiences: the ecosystem and animal

exhibits; the Brooker Creek Barn, a theater of
historical artifacts; vivid illustrations of the human
effect on the environment; and a series of nature
trails, including a nine-mile wilderness trail
and a horseback trail.

Shell Key Preserve is a 1,755 acre
sanctuary that includes a 180 acre barrier
island. Its unique habitat provides a haven for
wildlife, including the American oystercatcher,
snowy plover and black skimmer. Ninety-five
acres critical to the survival of these species
have been set aside for nesting, migrating and
wintering birds. The park is accessible by boat,
swimming and occasionally by wading.
Camping is permitted here.

Weedon Island Preserve is a rich mosaic of
mangrove forests, open salt flats, pine flatwoods
and oak hammock. Its 3,164 natural acres were
once home to at least four prehistoric cultures
who thrived on the abundant fish, shellfish, plants
and wild animals of the estuary. The Cultural and
National Historic Center features a creative
blend of the Native American culture with the
environment. Bring your own or rent a kayak

Once a barrier island, but now connected to
the mainland due to water currents, Caladesi
Island State Park, is an unspoiled area of
natural vegetation, abundant bird life and
educational programs for nature study. Named
the #1 Beach in America, the park provides
swimming, fishing and kayaking through the
three-mile mangrove shaded trail. One can hike
the nature trails, picnic or eat at Café Caladesi. A
ferry service to the island departs hourly from the
Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area marina.
Boat dockage is available during the day as well
as “boat camping” overnight.
The original inhabitants of Caladesi Island were
the Tocobago Tribe. The Tocobago used Caladesi
Island to bury their dead in burial mounds made
of shell. Spanish explorers discovered their tribe
in 1613 and the Tocobago left the island soon
after. Caladesi Island remained uninhabited for
over 200 years and in 1897, a Swiss immigrant
named Henry Scharrer decided to make the island
his home after seeking refuge from a storm. The
burial mounds remained undiscovered until 1903,
when an excavation team found 33 remains in an
area that spanned 1.39 acres.

Honeymoon Island State Park, a true
barrier island, is the gateway to Caladesi Island.
Here you can find pristine beaches, scenic
coastlines and diverse plant and animal life.
Walk the trails or use one of the park’s viewing
platforms to observe many species of birds,
including osprey, royal tern and white ibis, seaside
gopher tortoises and over 208 species of plants.
12
The Nature Center offers interactive exhibits
and videos on geological, animal and human
history intended to give visitors a better understanding of Honeymoon’s ecosystem and the
importance of preserving the island’s beautiful
natural habitat. The center is intended to be
a focal point for embarking on the activities
offered in the park: playgrounds, a dog beach,
swimming, fishing, kayaking, surfing, bird
watching, hiking and lunching at the picnic
pavilions or the outdoor café.

In the middle of St. Petersburg, you will find one
of the city’s oldest treasures: Sunken Gardens.
This botanical garden oasis in the middle of the
city is over 100 years old, and is Florida’s oldest
“living museum.” Here you will find some of the
oldest tropical plants in the region. Meandering
paths will lead you through 4 acres of exotic flora
from around the world. There are a total of 50,000
specimens here, representing 500 different
species. The gardens are also home to tropical
birds, flamingoes, and butterflies.

For a complete outdoor package of activities,
Ft. DeSoto Park is the place to go. Whether
you stay a few hours or a few days, you’ll never
run out of things to do. The park consists of
1,136-unspoiled acres with seven miles of white
sand beaches, plus all the amenities a beach
lover could want: great shelling, a 108-year old

fort to explore, fishing, boating of all types,
birdwatching, biking and a dog park. There are
four nature trails of varying lengths, including a
2,200-foot barrier-free trail. It’s the perfect place
for a picnic or a barbecue, or to spend the night
camping under the stars.
Nowhere else but Big Cat Rescue can one
be face to face with more than 130 huge felines
and 20 plus species of exotic and endangered
cats. Some of the more unusual ones include

Few destinations offer the opportunity to visit
four wildlife sanctuaries. These centers, in
addition to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, are
specifically focused on rescue, rehabilitation
and release of birds and mammals not often
seen up close.
Moccasin Lake Nature Park is a
51-acre preserve featuring rescued and
rehabilitated birds. It features reptile, mammal,
amphibian, insect and fish displays; plant and
energy exhibits; and nature trails.
The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary cares
for common as well as rare species. The more
unusual ones include a vervet monkey and a
lesser spotted guenon. One of its more famous
residents is “Cheetah,” one of the chimps who
starred in the Tarzan movies.

LET THE
GAMES BEGIN!
Whether you’re an active participant or an avid
spectator, Clearwater has a lot to offer for sports
enthusiasts. The mild winter weather means
you can be outdoors all year round.
Home to more than 40 golf courses, many
amateur and several prestigious professional
tournaments are held in the greater Tampa Bay
area each year. Dozens of public and semi-private
courses challenge even the most experienced
golfer. There is even a nine-hole walking course
for family play at Innisbrook Resort. Disc golf

A RICH AND VARIED HISTORY
Over a century of history is within close
proximity of Clearwater. The city’s name
originated from the clear springs that were
located along the high bluffs upon which
the downtown area is now situated. Early
settlers called it Clear Water Harbor, a name
that eventually became Clearwater. Spanish
conquistadors settled here for a short time in
the 16th century, but were driven out by the
Native Americans. It was not until the 1800s that
white settlers returned permanently. The “Father
of Clearwater,” James Stevens was among
the first of these. After a visit in 1841, James
McMullen and his six brothers settled the
area. The Clearwater Historical Society at

and also has a museum open to the public.

Thousands of American Indians once lived
along the bodies of water which are now Tampa

feature mounds dating from 500 B.C. to 1500
A.D. One of the best examples can be found
at the Weedon Island Preserve in northeast St.
Petersburg. See the ecotourism section of this
guide on page 10 for more details.

The David L. Mason Children’s Art
Museum (part of the Dunedin Fine Art Center)
is an educational and interactive art gallery
that children and their parents will both enjoy.
Hands-on activities help children to understand
and appreciate art.
The Children’s Art Museum is currently
undergoing a renovation and expansion.
Therefore, it is currently closed and will
reopen in August 2011.
The Glazer Children’s Museum offers
engaging “interactivities” for children up to
10 years old. These “interactivities” will help
them learn about science, art, and the world
around them.
“Children” of all ages will have fun while
learning at Great Explorations Children’s
Museum in St. Petersburg. It utilizes the familiar
interactive hands-on approach to explore such
wide-ranging subjects as the Wizard of Oz
to the workings of a fire station.

GETTING AROUND
BY AIR & LAND
Whether you rent an automobile when you get
here or arrive by car, we want your driving to
be as stress-free as possible. Motorists can dial
511 (a free call) 24 hours a day, to get detailed
information on traffic conditions on the interstates and major roads throughout Tampa Bay.
Traveler information can also be accessed via
the Internet at www.511tampabay.com.
Two nearby highly rated international
airports serve the greater Clearwater region.
Tampa International Airport and St.
Petersburg-Clearwater International
Airport are both traveler-friendly and
have shuttles and rental cars available
once you land.
As another gateway to the Suncoast,
Orlando International Airport is just
a 90-minute drive from Clearwater. It offers
a good alternative for both domestic and
international flights.
38
After a complete stop, it is legal to turn right at
a red light unless a sign indicates otherwise.
Please buckle up. It’s the law and it’s the safe
thing to do. Also remember to turn on your
headlights if driving in the rain. The speed limit
is radar enforced. Many areas have parking
meters and they are strictly enforced. Do not
back into parking spaces. The rear license
plate must be visible.
Clearwater’s public transportation system, the
Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority
(PSTA) is a convenient way to get around.
Buses run frequently, fares are extremely
reasonable and the routes cover all the major
shopping and beach areas.

PICKING THE
PERFECT
PLACE TO STAY
Clearwater’s accommodations fit every
lifestyle and budget. You can opt to stay in
an historic registered resort or look out at the
stars from a tent in a wooded campground.
All major lodging chains are represented here
and many of the smaller hotels are members
of and rated by Superior Small Lodgings.
For a family staying more than a week
you may want to reserve a multi-bedroom
condominium. There are also a large
40
number of cozy cottages, bed and breakfasts
and efficiency apartments to choose from. A
perfect blend of hotel and condominium is a
“condotel.” These operate as hotels, with the
expected hotel amenities, but offer individually
owned larger-than-normal rooms, full kitchens,
upscale furnishings and expansive bathrooms.
For the ultimate in pampering, there are a
number of upscale properties, many with
extensive spa facilities.

Renting accommodations is a contractual
agreement and is expected to be fulfilled by
both parties. If you change your plans and
fail to cancel by the scheduled time, you may
forfeit any deposit already paid and possibly
be required to compensate the establishment
if the space cannot be rebooked. Use of credit
cards is encouraged when making reservations
and/or placing a deposit with a property. Inquire
as to the cancellation policy and refund policy
as they vary from property to property.
w w w. v i s i t clear waterf l o r i d a . c o m
If you have physical challenges make sure
you check with the establishment regarding
disabled accessibility. A number of the area’s
accommodations were built prior to 1992 and
are exempt from ADA requirements.
The grid on pages 44 to 63 lists details for many
of our accommodations and is accurate as of
the publication date (December 2010). However,
it is advisable to call the establishment or visit
their website for the most current information.

We strongly recommend international visitors
bring American Express Travelers Checks as
banks may refuse to cash other brands. Most
institutions charge a $5 to $10 fee for financial
transactions.
Paying a Gratuity, or tipping, is a way of
life in the United States. Unless your party
size is large, tips are normally not included in
restaurant or lounge bills and the tip amount is
left to the customer’s discretion, although
15% is standard. Servers, bartenders, taxi
drivers and bellmen should receive a tip for
their services. It is also customary to tip the
hotel/motel housekeeping staff, hairdressers
and spa attendants. It is not necessary to tip
sales clerks in stores or fast food employees.
Sales Tax of 7% is added to just about
everything you purchase except for most food
purchased in a grocery store, medicines and
some other pharmaceutical items. There is an
additional 5% tax on accommodations. These
taxes may vary from county to county.
ALCOHOL
Florida law prohibits the sale of alcoholic
beverages to persons under the age of 21 and
photo identification may be required for anyone
under 30. State law prohibits drinking alcoholic
beverages in public and on the beach. It is also
unlawful to have an open container of alcohol
in a moving vehicle. Florida law imposes stiff
penalties if driving under the influence of alcohol
or drugs, so contact a cab company to make
alternate transportation arrangements.

Interstate 75 (I-75) carries visitors from
Midwest and northern states directly to the
Tampa Bay area.

To reach Clearwater, take the Tampa
International Airport exit and then go west
on State Road 60 onto scenic Courtney
Campbell Causeway (also known as SR 60),
which terminates on Clearwater Beach.
