CLEARWATER CONSERVANCY

In its 32nd year of conserving land and water in Central
Pennsylvania, ClearWater Conservancy continued to build
its capacity to provide conservation services to the people
of Centre and surrounding counties.
The conservancy works with a growing list of landowners who
want to conserve or restore natural resources on their land.
Their foresight and commitment will have a profound effect on
the flora, fauna and aesthetics of this place for generations.
2013 marked the 15th year of the Spring Creek Water
Resources Monitoring Project. The project was initiated
in 1998 by the Spring Creek Watershed Association and
is housed at ClearWater Conservancy. Its goal is to gather
baseline information about the water resources in the
Spring Creek watershed that can be used for the long-term
protection of these resources as demands increase with time.
Annually, we leverage the goodwill of hundreds of volunteers
to execute projects, events, conservation easement monitoring,
riparian stewardship and more. From our board of directors
to the cadre of folks who gather in our meeting room to stuff
envelopes, a diverse group of people give generously of
themselves to help with the cause.

In 2013, we received about 1,000 individual gifts of cash or
services from families and enterprises in central Pennsylvania.
That broad support is reflective of our core value that people
have a place in the landscape and that only through inclusion,
education, partnership and the hard work of on-the-ground
conservation will we continue to make a difference.
The conservancy continues to expand its use of technology
with beneficial impacts on outreach, marketing, fundraising,
mapping and record-keeping.
Looking ahead, there is lots of work to do. As our region
continues to develop and grow, our unique landscapes
and habitats will be increasingly pressured. Only through
thoughtful planning and conservation can we maintain the
wonders of nature and scenes of beauty residents of central
Pennsylvania have come to know and appreciate.

69,890 ft of streamside buffer
plantings installed
1,320 tree and shrub seedlings were
planted in 2013 at 21 riparian restoration
sites. 715 of these were locally native species
propagated by ClearWater’s all-volunteer
Growing Native program.
ClearWater conducted stewardship
activities on 16 properties in 2013:
14 conservation easements and
two owned properties. In all, 1,647
acres were scrutinized to ensure
that conservation objectives are
being met.

Our Riparian Site Steward Program volunteers
drove 3,678 miles and logged 856 hours of
volunteer time in 2013, services valued at $21,500.
The stewards help ensure the success of
completed streamside planting projects by
maintaining relationships with landowners,
caring for young trees and shrubs, removing
invasive species and alerting staff to any
developing issues or needs. Their efforts are
key to ClearWater’s restoration efforts along our
central Pennsylvanian waterways.
