Surviving and Thriving
In-school mental health services offer on-the-spot help for kids and their families
P
revention is worth a pound
of cure—as the saying goes.
But in the case of mental
illness, early intervention is critical
in helping a person to avoid the
long-term and often devastating
effects of going without care.
This was the case for Angie
DeJesus and her nephew Jared,
who found themselves dealing
with a family tragedy. Jared lost his
mother—Angie’s sister Erika—in
2011 due to complications from
rheumatoid arthritis, and he moved
down from Staples to live with
Angie. Erika and Angie had already raised
three children from another sister, Rachael,
who was killed in an act of domestic violence.
“The program has really helped Jared
learn how to handle his emotions,”
says Angie. “Jared is a fantastic kid—
he’s bright and so resilient—but
his mother’s death brought huge
changes for him and for me, too.

with Jared
Navigating all of that would be a lot for anyone—but
especially for a teenager. His guardian aunt, also dealing
with grief, needed to keep things stable for Jared at home
and at school while working full-time, too.
That’s where People Incorporated’s School-Linked Mental
Health program stepped in at Jared’s school. The on-site

services are designed to identify kids who need help with
their emotions or behavior, and provide care to keep
problems from becoming bigger.
“His counselor is fabulous. What’s
great is that she is at his school
and gets to know him as a whole
person—not like a doctor who only
sees him for fifteen minutes. She also
helps me find the best way to help
Jared when he’s having a difficult
time.”
Jared, who likes history at school and fishing
and video games in his free time, is equally
enthusiastic. “We meet once a week, and
she’s available by phone or email,” he says. “She’s great—
she came to a presentation I made last week at school, and
she took me out for dinner and bowling on the anniversary
of my mom’s death.”
“I don’t know what I would do without her,” says Angie.
“She made dealing with grief understandable for me. She
also gives Jared someone outside of friends and family to
talk to—you don’t want to tell everything to your aunt,”
she laughs.
“I’ve seen the positive impact of the program in so many
ways. Jared is a mature kid for his age, he’s polite and helps
out at home, and he’s getting great grades at school. He
wants to go to college to become a teacher or a doctor. The
counseling really kept us on track during a rocky time in
our lives, and helped Jared not only survive, but thrive.”

Second Annual Beer Tasting Event at Summit Brewery May 30
Join us for our second annual beer-tasting event featuring Summit craft brews,
live music, and an opportunity to raise
funds and awareness for our Homeless
Services programs. The funds raised will
help us provide emergency outdoor survival gear, food, transportation, and other
necessities to people with mental illness
who are experiencing homelessness.
This year’s event, organized by our young donor staff team, will include
a performance by the Twin Cities–based folk-rock group the Hounds of
Finn, who are waiving their fee for the cause. A VIP reception and tour
will be held from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, followed by the beer-tasting event from
6:00 – 8:00 PM. Watch the People Incorporated website and Facebook
event page for further details, and if you’re a young professional interested in helping on the planning committee for this event, contact Kate
Krisik at 651.288.3501 or Kate.Krisik@PeopleIncorporated.org. One hundred percent of proceeds will go to support People Incorporated clients.

Better Mental Health Care Means Early Intervention and
Community-based Services
An elementary school in Connecticut. A workplace in
Minnesota. A movie theater in Colorado. Each of these
recent mass shootings was committed by an individual
reportedly suffering from mental illness. In the aftermath,
we’re all asking questions. How could we have prevented
these tragedies? What clues did we miss? Most importantly,
can we prevent the next one—and if so, how?
Pundits, politicians, and scholars all have weighed in, urging
everything from posting armed guards in public spaces to
analyzing perpetrators’ DNA. Despite the conflicting
opinions, nearly all have agreed that better mental health
care is a vital part of the solution. But what does “better”
mental health care look like?
We know that early intervention is key to preventing larger
problems. Clinical research clearly shows that people who
receive early treatment for mental illness have much better
outcomes—and we see this every day in our programs.
Here in the Twin Cities, some of the best early intervention
programs in the country are demonstrating success on a
small scale every day. These include our intensive in-school
programs for elementary and secondary school students, our
crisis residences and mobile crisis teams, and our homeless
programs that help people with mental illness living on the
streets get health care and housing.
Providing ongoing support to people living with mental
illness is also a critical component. In-home health services,
residential programs, and drop-in centers provide stability
and continuing care to prevent crises or manage them when
they occur.
Unfortunately, such lifechanging services are not
always available to those
who need them. People in
one county or school district
may receive mental health
support services, while those
in a neighboring county or
district do not—resulting in
more costly emergency room
visits, incarcerations, and
untreated mental illness.
We can easily afford to do better—because early intervention
and community-based support also saves significant taxpayer
dollars. Our crisis residences typically save approximately
$12,500 per client when compared to the costs of emergency rooms and hospitals. Our homeless programs result in
fewer arrests/incarcerations and hospital visits, and deliver a
return-on-investment of nearly $230,000 each year.
Society has invested millions in better treatment for diabetes,
heart disease, and myriad other chronic health conditions—
treatments that have improved the quality of life for patients
while providing significant cost savings. Mental illness needs
to be taken just as seriously right now—today—if we want
to have a chance at preventing any of the violent tragedies of
tomorrow.
Sincerely,
M. Tim Burkett, Ph.D., L.P.

Eight New Program Gardens—
Thanks to House-to-Home
We are very pleased to announce that our annual House-to-
Home event raised enough funds to allow us to install eight new
gardens at different program locations! These new gardens are in
the early planning stages and will likely be a mix of both raised-
bed and in-ground vegetable gardens, plus annual and perennial
flowers and shrubs. The purpose of these gardens is to provide
healthy produce that clients can grow and enjoy, opportunities
for clients to learn about gardening and spend time outdoors,
and to enhance the beauty of our programs—many of which are
in typical neighborhood settings.

Taking a tour of a People
Incorporated program is the best way
to learn about what we do. We’re proud
of our facilities, our staff, and the results
we achieve with our clients, and we’d
love to show you around. We’re now
offering scheduled tours of many of our
programs. We’ve listed the spring and
early summer tours here, but a full list
is available online. To join a tour, sign
up online at PeopleIncorporated.org
(see tour link on the home page), or call
Heidi Brooks at 651.282.3524.
We need experienced green-thumb volunteers!
We need your help to get these
gardens off to a great start. Are you
an expert in herb gardens? Toma-
toes? Have an eye for landscape de-
sign? Know how to build raised-bed
frames—or simply like to dig in the
dirt? We’ll have many opportun-
ities once the growing season starts.
We can also use donated materi-
als, hoes, rakes, spades, large pots,
gloves, and other tools of the trade.
Here are just a few ideas for volunteering:
• garden planning
• gathering/donating materials and tools
• constructing raised beds
• tilling/preparing beds
• planting
• teaching mini workshops for clients and staff
•w
orking with clients to maintain vegetable
and flower beds
• composting
• fall clean up

Wins Circle of Excellence Award
Rock the Cause for
People Incorporated
Dakota County’s Preferred Integrated Network (PIN)
initiative has been recognized with a Commissioner’s
Circle of Excellence Award from Minnesota Department of
Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson. The PIN is
a collaboration between Medica, Dakota County, and four
contracted case management agencies— including People
Incorporated—that works to integrate mental and physical
health for people with mental illness. The purpose is to
help improve the life expectancy of people with mental
illness, which is on average 25 years shorter than individuals
without mental illness. People Incorporated’s Community
