It lurked in the shadows
stalked him
growling
menacing
threatening to devour
painting his world
with a brutal starkness
draining it of color.
the black dog.
That’s what
Winston Churchill
called his depression—
the constant companion that
dogged him all his life
forcing him to fight
a battle within
while fighting
the Nazis without.
And so the man
lionized for his leadership
in the Second World War
was yet just another human being
with mental illness
who gave so much of himself
and so much more
to our world.
What greatness would we unleash
if every person with mental illness
had access to the support
and opportunities
they needed
to achieve, to contribute,
to live up to their potential?
my black dog
seems quite away
from me now—it
is such a relief. all
the colours come
back into the
picture.
That’s what we do to help
people with mental illness.
We push aside stigma,
and find the best ways
to bring that black dog to heel,
no matter how much
it might hound them,
or how long it might take.
We help each person
tame the beast
into a gentle giant
and partner with them
as we walk the road of
recovery together.

naming
the beast
It’s like being on the
rollercoaster and the twister
at the same time. My emotions
respond to external stimuli,
and I’m not in control of what
I think or feel. My thoughts
race—I feel agitated for no
reason, like I’m in constant
fight-or-flight mode. I get
paranoid and think that
people don’t like me or are out
to get me—and I think the
radio and television can hear
or see what I’m doing. It’s
tiring and it’s scary. I can’t
trust my own brain to direct
me, and if you can’t trust your
own mind, what else do you
have? It’s not a fun ride.
nichelle clater
I feel like I’m a firecracker that’s
going to explode. People keep
lighting the fuse, and it’s going
to go off. I’m scared of that—
scared of what might happen.
I keep trying to put the fuse
out, keep trying to figure out
what to do. I feel people take
advantage of my kindness
and think it’s a weakness.
I’m always looking behind my
back, always on the alert for
danger. I just want to defuse
the bomb so I can cope with
everyday life.
sulaiman harut
I feel like a caged animal at the
zoo, like a tiger that’s pacing
back and forth behind bars.
It’s frustrating and makes me
mad. I want to get out, want to
do anything but be on display,
but there’s nowhere to go.
I feel like I don’t fit in, that
people are laughing at me and
pointing at me. I’ve got a label
like I’m a strange beast from
another place. It’s embarrassing.
I just want to escape, run away,
and be by myself. It’s hard to
always feel like the outsider.
I just want to be accepted.

the walk
Before People Incorporated,
I saw my life as a dead end. My
symptoms were getting worse,
but I couldn’t get the help I
needed. When I first went to
a People Incorporated drop-in
center, I was scared I would
have to dress in hospital
scrubs. I couldn’t have been
more wrong. All I’ve gotten is
support. I can’t tell you how
much the staff members mean
to me—they’re very dedicated
and healing. I attend a lot of
discussion groups, and an
Artability writers’ group. People
Incorporated lets me express
my frustrations with the
medical system, and they’ve
lifted me out of my depression,
cut my bitterness, and taught
me gratitude.
lynne nerenberg
I was in a really dark place. I
was homeless for more than
eight years—sleeping in tents,
cars, snow forts, and along the
river—and was addicted to
alcohol, meth, and heroin.
People Incorporated gave me a
safe place to stay. I lived there
a year, and it was like having a
family again. I wasn’t used to
being around other people, so I
learned to interact with others
normally, learned to cook, and
got a diagnosis for my mental
illness. They let me take things
at my own pace, and that was
important to me—I couldn’t
handle everything all at once.
The staff really worked to help
me start living again.
billy waldahl
Depression runs in my family.
My mom committed suicide,
and then later I lost my partner
and my brother to cancer in
the same year. I’ve had breast
cancer, too. I was homeless for
nearly a year, sleeping on sofas
and eventually down by the
river. I met a People Incorporated
outreach worker, who helped
me get treatment and a place
of my own. I just couldn’t
believe it at first—a roof over
my head! My depression is way
better now that I have a place to
live and am getting counseling.
I used to find it really hard to
get out and do things, but now
I’ve got more energy. I had my
teeth fixed and got new glasses,
and I’m out doing more with
my kids and grandkids. It’s great
to find ‘me’ again.

unleashing
the potential
I was embarrassed. I didn’t
want to be around anyone
because I had fallen from
grace. I had dropped out of law
school. I had failed my family
and myself. It was the People
Incorporated staff who said,
‘No, you didn’t fail,’ and gave
me the strength, kindness, and
patience to heal. I returned to
school and am now working
toward my paralegal certificate.
I hope one day to be an attorney.
Thanks to People Incorporated,
I finally realized that my past is
not a negative, but rather one
step in the journey. Recovery
requires many skillful hands to
help you navigate through the
rough waters.
arianne maxwell
People Incorporated backs you
100%. They helped me get into
my own home after eight years
of living in the woods when I
lost my construction job and
had a stroke. I was just waiting
to die, really. First they gave me
a tent and sleeping bag, but
then I got treatment for my
depression. I learned about the
effects of the abuse I got as a
kid—I had a lot of anger. Now
I have some peace of mind and
can be a productive citizen
again. They really got me back
on track. My family’s back in
my life, my fiancé came back,
and I’m just starting a new job
installing wood floors this
week. I wouldn’t be here
without People Incorporated—
it’s as simple as that.
brad rooke
I lived under a bridge and
drank to stop the pain. People
Incorporated helped me get my
own apartment and medical
care. I’ve since stopped drinking,
and I want to go back to work.
I check in every two weeks with
my People Incorporated staff
person, who helps me out with
paperwork and issues that crop
up. Having a stable place to live
means everything to me. I’ve
now got some tools and started
making cradles and toys for
kids, and I repair things for my
neighbors. I even made a cradle
for my staff person’s new baby.
It felt great to give something
back. People Incorporated
helped me have a future again.

old dog,
new tricks
m. tim burkett, ph.d., l.p. alden drew

ceo
That old dog, mental illness, has
been around a long time, and
bringing it to heel seems like a
never-ending process. We’re not
very patient—and why should
we be, when there are so many
people who desperately need
help and aren’t getting it? This
fact alone drives us forward
every day in our mission.
We may not feel very patient,
but when we step back for a
moment, we are grateful for the
many milestones in the past
few years. In 2011 we established
the Huss Center for Recovery,
realizing our goal of creating
a center that treats chemical
dependency and mental
illness (CD/MI) in a concurrent,
integrated way—something
we helped pioneer in Minnesota
more than 15 years ago. Demand
is now growing for this kind
of care, and we are working to
expand our CD/MI services for
the future.
We also acquired 13 mental
health programs from Children’s
Home Society and Family
Services late in 2011. Early
intervention is key in treating
mental illness, so we’re excited
to expand our services to
children and their families. This
is an important development
for us, because together with a
new pilot program for seniors
launched this year, we are now
offering mental health services
for all ages. We’ll continue to
work to strengthen and expand
these programs next year and
beyond. There will be an even
greater demand for senior
mental health care in the future
as our population ages.
So is it possible to teach that
old dog some new tricks? The
answer is a resounding ‘Yes!’
People Incorporated has a long
history of pioneering new ways
to help people with serious and
persistent mental illness, and we
continually explore new paths,
adapt existing programs, and
sharpen our skills so that we
can offer the very best in mental
health care to our clients.
When people are first introduced
to People Incorporated,
they often ask what makes
us different from other
organizations—especially since
we’ve grown from $5 million
to $33 million during the last
15 years. Our ‘secret’—if we
have one—could be in our
approach to care. Clients tell
us that it’s because we provide
such a high level of one-on-one
support within our programs,
and because we treat each of
them with dignity and respect.
That’s something many of
them have never experienced
due to the stigma and blame
still associated with mental
illness. We don’t preach or
judge, but instead partner with
each person and provide the
support that he or she needs
to live independently—from
chemical dependency treatment
to stable housing, goal-setting,
and interpersonal skills. In
short, we take a ‘whole-person’
approach. The goal? To help
people avoid hospitalization
and institutionalization, and live
their lives as full members of
our community. The best part
is that our services are costeffective, too.
The black dog of mental illness
may be old, but we’ve got the
enthusiasm of a young pup—
and the dogged determination
of a bloodhound—as we work
to bring hope to people who
have suffered alone for so long.
We couldn’t do any of it without
you, our donors, who support
us in so many ways—through
your gifts and volunteer time, by
contacting legislators, or simply
cheering us and our clients on.
So on behalf of the people we
serve, thank you for walking the
walk with us.
we now offer mental health
services for all ages.

Mental health urgent care
Mental illness is complex and can affect all aspects of a person’s life—from physical health to
housing to social relationships. That’s why People Incorporated goes beyond providing psychiatric
care for people with mental illness. Mental health care is what we do, but we look at each person
as an individual and provide just the right combination of support he or she needs to succeed.
