Comprehensive Stroke Program
Earned National Certification
Boulder Community Hospital has an outstanding and dedicated team of
physicians, nurses, rehabilitation specialists and other clinical professionals
who work together to provide the best possible care for our stroke
patients. Their great work was recognized in 2012 when our hospital was
certified by The Joint Commission (the nation’s largest standards-setting
and accrediting body in health care) as a Primary Stroke Center.
BCH is one of three Colorado hospitals north of Denver that have been
designated as Primary Stroke Centers. In order to achieve this notable
designation, our stroke program underwent a thorough on-site review.
The Joint Commission’s certification demonstrates that we meet
rigorous national standards for our full range of stroke care.
The BCH Stroke Team brings together a broad range of expertise including,
from left, emergency medicine specialist Jason Rozeski, MD,
neurosurgeon Lee Nelson, MD, neurologist Janice Miller, MD,
interventional radiologist Jie Mao, MD and physiatrist Jaclyn Arends, MD.
Our exceptional stroke program was also acknowledged by
Healthgrades (a national health care quality rating service). BCH
received the Healthgrades Stroke Care Excellence Award and earned a
five-star rating for our treatment of stroke patients.
Our comprehensive program incorporates the entire continuum of care
for stroke patients, from emergency treatment and advanced diagnostic
technology to both acute and critical inpatient treatments and extensive
rehabilitation services.

New Specialists
Expanded Cardiology Team
2012 marked a year of exciting changes for Boulder Community Hospital’s
highly-regarded cardiac care program. Cardiovascular surgeon Randolph
Kessler, MD, an expert in minimally invasive heart and lung surgery and
mitral valve repair, joined the hospital’s heart team. BCH is the only medical
facility in Boulder County that performs open heart surgery.
Rocky Mountain Cardiology and Colorado Cardiovascular Center merged to
form Boulder Heart, our outstanding group of board-certified physicians,
nurses and technicians who collectively provide the community with local
access to an extensive range of top quality services for heart conditions.
During 2012, our cardiac program effectively reduced readmission rates
for heart failure and heart attack patients. We were also named a five-star
hospital for treating heart attacks by Healthgrades (a national health care
quality rating service). These accomplishments demonstrate the strength
and quality of our cardiac services.

National Accreditation & Community Outreach
Were Major Achievements in Breast Cancer
Boulder Community Hospital’s comprehensive
multidisciplinary breast cancer program
received important national recognition in 2012.
We became fully accredited by the National
Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC),
a program administered by the American College
of Surgeons. The only fully accredited Breast
Center north of Denver, our program provides the
best in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and
offers our patients every significant advantage in
their battle against breast disease.
The NAPBC accreditation was the latest recognition
for BCH’s breast cancer services. Boulder Community
Foothills Hospital has been designated a “Breast
Imaging Center of Excellence” by the American
College of Radiology. Our Imaging Department
consistently demonstrates superior standards in
areas such as image quality, personnel
and equipment.
Community outreach is a vital way to help expand
breast cancer awareness and increase early
diagnosis of this potentially fatal condition. The
hospital has a long-standing relationship with the
University of Colorado Athletic Department. In
2012, we partnered with CU Athletics and Safeway
stores for a joint breast cancer awareness campaign
centered around the CU-UCLA football game. 125
breast cancer survivors were provided free tickets
to the game and received special acknowledgement
during the pre-game warmups. Additionally,
Safeway donated $10,000 to BCH breast cancer
services in a halftime ceremony.
The CU Women’s Tennis Team also supported
community cancer services, raising $10,000 through
their annual tennis marathon for breast cancer.

New Features Improved
Electronic Health Record
We reached several important milestones with our Electronic
Health Record during 2012. A critical electronic system that
improves medication safety went live. Nurses now document
which medications are given to specific patients using a
portable barcode scanner that matches patients with medicines.
This automated system ensures that the right dose of the right
medication is given to the right patient at the right time.
Physicians started entering their treatment orders and other
important documentation directly into the hospital’s computer
system in a standardized format that is quickly saved and
easily accessed by appropriate staff. Physicians can now
monitor their patients’ progress and enter new orders from
their office or other secure locations outside the hospital,
allowing treatment to proceed more quickly.

Use Fueled by Expansion in
Outpatient Services
During 2012, some 424,000 patients (including about 8,700
inpatients) were provided services at BCH facilities. Compared to
2011, the outpatient volumes increased by 23,000 while the number
of inpatients remained stable.

Caring for All
As an independent, locally governed hospital, BCH is strongly
committed to providing necessary medical care to all segments
of our community. BCH voluntarily participates in the Colorado
Indigent Care Program (CICP), which provides the hospital nominal
reimbursement for services provided to indigent state residents who
do not qualify for Medicaid. In 2012, the hospital had more than
$7.8 million in unreimbursed costs associated with treating patients
covered by CICP.
The Medicaid program, a state-federal partnership, pays the hospital
for treating qualified low-income citizens. However, the Medicaid
payment for most medical services is less than what it costs BCH to
provide that treatment. In 2012, the hospital had more than $9.4
million in unreimbursed costs associated with treating patients
covered by Medicaid.
“We Care” is a unique BCH program that provides low income
patients with outright charity to cover their hospital bills. The
hospital incurred about $3.0 million in unreimbursed costs
associated with treating patients utilizing the “We Care” program.
The hospital also provides services for many economically
disadvantaged citizens who do not qualify for CICP, Medicaid or
charity care. In 2012, the hospital incurred $7.0 million in bad debt.

BCH Ambassadors Raised Funds
for Hospital’s Future Growth
The volunteers of the BCH Ambassadors (formerly
Auxiliary) help generate and distribute needed funds
that enhance the services provided by the hospital. In
2012, the Ambassadors hosted three major events: An
Evening in Santorini, which raised $128,000 for the new
cardiac catheterization lab to be constructed at Foothills
Hospital; the 31st annual Fashion Show and Luncheon,
which raised more than $80,000 to purchase state-ofthe-art equipment for the new inpatient therapy gym on
the Foothills campus (anticipated to open in June 2014);
and the fourth annual Boulder Busts Cancer, which raised
more than $82,000 for the Breast Cancer Treatment
Fund (designated for underinsured or uninsured patients
needing medical services following a suspicious or
positive mammogram).
