Having a comprehensive community resource like the Women’s Center means that if you need a job, a place to live, counseling, or help against violence— you have a place to turn to. The Women’s Center assists over 10,000 people annually to develop safe, healthy and self-sufficient lives. We help women help themselves. By supporting the Women’s Center through your time, talent and treasure, you give the gift of hope and change lives for the better. Client Story I am so grateful for The Women's Center. My son, Noah, and I were new to the area and I heard about The Women's Center from a friend. I went in right away and filled out paperwork to become a client. Little did I know, they offered several workshops that would benefit me and my son. I applied for Transitional Housing. I attended a Career Workshop and a Self-defense class. That was only the beginning of this wonderful journey we've been on this past year. After attending the Career Workshop, Cindy asked me if I was interested in the Displaced Homemaker Program. This would allow me to work at the front desk of the Women's Center and to get something recent on my resume'. I absolutely loved working there. Stephanie was a "light" in my life that was shining through all the darkness. I have met some amazing people at The Women's Center. Not only were we accepted into the Transitional Housing Program, they also helped us furnish our apartment! Adam, who runs the thrift store, Furniture & More, helped us pick out furniture and even had it delivered! I was so grateful. In 2011, we lost everything in a tornado that demolished our home. Unfortunately, I haven't received any help along the way, since I became a single mom in 2001, until The Women's Center entered my life. The Transitional Housing Program has been such a blessing. I'm able to see a counselor to help me deal with past hurts and PTSD. Not only has Roxy helped me with those issues, she's been able to help me realize my self worth and how important that is in terms of moving forward. I meet with Judy every week so she can keep me on my toes and help me stay focused on moving forward. I've been able to pay down some debt I've acquired over the years. 4 Thanks to Melissa, who always had my paycheck ready and available for me. Because of The Women's Center, my son has been able to get a tutor to help him in school. He's also received a grant for a gym membership, new sneakers for school and a backpack full of school supplies. We received gifts for Christmas...including a massage for me! Yay! My son received a brand new bike and several gift cards so he could pick out some clothes for school. The Women's Center has also helped us out with food, toiletries, and clothes. I've met some amazing people there, including Jackie, who is the Victims Advocate. She constantly has a smile on her face and offers tons of encouragement to whoever crosses her path. And last but not least, Jenny. Thanks to her dream and passion for helping women, none of this would be possible. I am forever in your debt. Sincerely Blessed and Humbled, Lisa Pieri 5 Executive Message The year 2013 was a very busy year! With the combined efforts of our two amazing guilds our first annual Dude Looks Like a Lady netted $105,000. This year’s exciting fundraising events, hosted by our guilds, raised more funds for our services than ever before! Although we continue to lose government funding through budget cuts, our guilds manage to keep us going, and we have not had to cut services. We have located a larger facility in Titusville, which our generous benefactor, Parrish Medical Center is renovating for us, and we will be moving into it spring 2014. This will allow us to expand services, including providing more counseling services.John Byron donated his time and energy to head up our strategic planning efforts and we developed a comprehensive plan that we believe will carry us into the future as we address what we need to better serve our community. We thank John for his knowledge and his guidance. We lost the Displaced Homemaker funds this year through state budget cuts, but we continue to provide necessary services to those looking for career guidance. Our youth program is expanding into new arenas as we continue to plan summer services for girls and young women. Unfortunately our dear friend, Marion Collins lost her fight with cancer during the year. For decades, Marion was one of the Women’s Center’s most influential volunteers. Her life story is one of service, and truly, there are few greater acts of love than serving your fellow sisters. Benevolent, kind, caring, compassionate, Marion was an inspiration and a true lady. She was our one and only Steel Magnolia. She will be missed by all who loved her. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our supporters, for without you, we would not exist. Thank you, Jenny Gessler, Executive Director 6 Mission & Vision “I really appreciate all that the Women’s Center has done for me. I feel safe in the center, while I use their resources. Through their efforts, I have been able to dress for success in their career closet for an interview, meet my job coach in their conference room and pick up some toiletries from time to time. I come often to use the computer & phone. I love the Women’s Center, they are totally helpful & I love all the services they offer me.” Women’s Center Mission To empower women and their families to achieve safe, healthy and selfsufficient lives by providing support, education, counseling, information and services. Women’s Center Vision The Women’s Center’s vision is to provide opportunities for all women and their families to be their best by providing quality, cutting edge services, education to the community, advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels, and diverse volunteer opportunities for community citizens who want to make a difference. 7 Our Organization Most of our clients are from low and middle income families. They represent all age groups, races and religions. They are single, married, widowed, divorced, mothers or childless; and more than five percent of our clients are men and two percent are children. The Women’s Center strives to address the needs of women by giving them a step up towards safe, healthy, self-sufficient lives. Every day, women come to us without the ability to provide for themselves and their families. These women are often abused and battered, and looking for advocacy, guidance, and support. Thanks to our volunteers and loyal supporters who give so much of their time and resources, and the benefits of grant awards, the Women’s Center is able to provide counseling services, financial assistance, career guidance, job training, transitional housing, and victim advocacy. The Center is proud to be able to help annually over 10,000 women and their children who seek out our assistance. The Women’s Center has several programs that are designed to help women in specific situations and many will overlap the services provided by each program. These programs have formed over the years as the Center saw a need to address certain problems that women commonly faced. The Center has a counseling program, client services, transitional housing, victims services, and career services for displaced homemakers. 8 Self-Sufficiency We provide basic needs and other services, such as peer counseling, educational workshops, information and referral for women and their families who are at risk. In 2013, 9,246 individuals were provided 17,885 services such as budget assistance, food, diapers/toiletries, financial assistance, furniture vouchers, emergency hotel stays and referrals to other community resources. Through our transitional housing services we provide long-term, comprehensive services for homeless women and their children that include intensive case management; individual and group counseling; career guidance; job training; life skills and budgeting workshops; and reimbursement for transportation, medical expenses and childcare. In the last year, 87.5% of those clients who completed the program transitioned into permanent housing. We assisted 20 families which included 20 women and 38 children in 2013. We provide career guidance services through a personalized program that explores career options and individual growth. In 2013 the Women’s Center assisted 191 individuals. 11 women received job training, 33 people attended our career workshops. 9 Victim Services The Women’s Center is committed to assisting victims and survivors of violence through our Victims Services program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a support system to victims of crime such as domestic violence, sexual violence, dating violence, and stalking. We supply information and educate the victims about their legal rights, resources in our community, and the dynamics of domestic violence. In 2013, the Melbourne program assisted 951 clients with advocacy. We also provide victim-advocates who support victims by assisting them with filing an injunction for protection-petition at the clerk’s office, and supporting them through their hearing in the courtroom. Our victim-advocates assist with the completion of application forms for Florida’s Victims of Crime Compensation Program which pays medical and counseling bills incurred by our client as well as lost wages resulting from these crimes. Support groups and domestic violence classes are offered for victims of abuse. These classes educate participants about the dynamics of a domestic relationship, the cycle of violence, the definition of abuse, warning signs, safety planning, where to go for services, and what one can expect from support groups and counseling sessions. 10 Services in Titusville The Women’s Center continues to make services available at our Titusville location serving the communities of North Brevard. Among these services offeredat our Titusville office located at 725 South DeLeon Ave., Suite 116 are victimadvocacy, counseling, a 24-hour domestic violence hotline, and an emergencysafe house for domestic violence victims. In 2013, in our Titusville office, we provided 627 women with advocacy and education as well as safe housing for 22 women and 23 children. Our Safe House was so generously donated in 2010 by the City of Titusville and opened in March of 2012 and has been a great success in meeting the needs of this community. This home is the first SafeHouse facility of it’s kind in North Brevard. The Women’s Center is grateful forthe continued support of the City of Titusville, Parrish Medical Center, the Guild, and the community for their commitment to this project. 11 Counseling The Women’s Center Counseling Services provides affordable and quality counseling services and is available to provide community mental health needs, including counseling and testing. Our Counseling Department provides a wide range of services and has counselors with a multitude of specialties. Our counseling program provides services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. We offer counseling to men and women, and treatment is available for anyone in need of services for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-injurious behaviors, relationship and communication difficulties, self-esteem, family issues divorce, grief or loss, anger management, stress management addictions, issues on aging, post traumatic stress disorders, trauma resolution, relationships, parenting, living with chronic pain or illness, and many other life issues. We also offer a variety of counseling services at both of our Melbourne and Titusville offices for victims of sexual assault, incest, child abuse, domestic violence, and other violent crimes including individual and support group counseling. We can offer crime victims free individual counseling. We provide free support groups for victims of Domestic Violence, Incest Survivors, and Koolkids (children who witness violence in their homes) and we are seeking referrals for a new Men’s Survivor group(for adult men who were abused as children). In 2013, the counseling program has helped 1,933 women, men and children with individual, couples, and group counseling. In total 6,667 of counseling services were provided. The Women’s Center Counseling Services has staff and independently contracted licensed therapists, license eligible interns, and graduate students allowing us to offer a range of fee options, including sliding scale fees for low cost counseling. Some of our Licensed therapists accept insurance assignment for several insurance groups. 12 Career Guidence The Women’s Center Career Guidance program is a personalized program that explores career options and individual growth. Those who participate are able to gain a more clear understanding of who they are, what motivates them, the skills they want to use in their work, and the education or specialized training that maybe required for employment. We help people realize their potential, and support them in their journey towards becoming successfully employed. Under a grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, in 2012, the Career Guidance Program has been awarded funding to specifically assist homemakers 35 years of age or older, who need training and support to transition to their first job, or back into the workforce. These individuals were once supported by a spouse or family member, but are no longer supported due to divorce, separation, death or disability, or who have been on government assistance and want to become self-sufficient. In 2013, through our Displaced Homemaker Program, we assisted 85 clients resulting in 40 women obtaining employment. Additional services provided by the career guidance program includes individual career counseling from a career guide, job readiness, workshops, an individual employment plan, experience working with a job trainer, and job referral. 13 Furniture & More Thrift Store The mission of our store is to support the programs and services of the Women’s Center and their clients by providing quality pre-owned items at affordable prices to all members of the community while providing a clean and friendly shopping environment. The Women’s Center Furniture & More store supports recycling efforts by preventing reusable items from going to the landfill and by donating some items for recycling such as cell phones, eyeglasses and ink cartridges. In 2013 the Store was able to provide 226 vouchers for $18,010.95 in furniture donations to clients through our donation certificate program. Additionally, the Furniture & More store has a retail skills training program that is provided as part of the Career Guidance program for clients who are in need of job skills. The Furniture & More store provides this much needed training in a safe and structured environment. Volunteers The Women’s Center could not develop its services without the invaluable assistance of its volunteers. These dedicated individulas answer telephones, provide peer counseling, schedule appointments, register clients for support groups and workshops and so much more. Volunteers serve on the Board of Directors and the Guild, and provide support for special projects. Each volunteer who provides regular Front Desk support at the Women’s Center has received training in interpersonal and communications skills, office management techniques, dealing with crisis calls, and how to research services available in the community that are not provided by the Women’s Center. Our trained volunteers provide victim-advocacy at the courthouse to women who are seeking an injunction for protection. Local attorneys volunteer their time to provide Legal Aspects of Separation and Divorce workshops. Financial Planners and bankers provide Budgeting and How to Repair Your Credit workshops. These classes are held monthly and open to the public. 14 Confidential Supportive Services for Military Service Personnel Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Women’s Center was able to establish a comprehensive military outreach program which provides staff and services to assist military personnel and/or their families to meet the unique needs of this brave group of citizens. This outreach program provides the opportunity to work within the military and their systems but also to provide assistance outside this same structure to ensure confidentiality when needed. A Military Case Specialist meets with clients to assess their needs and coordinate services. In 2013 a total of 126 clients from our military population received 421 total services. • • • • • Direct services may include: Counseling and therapy – individual, family, couples, and children. Career guidance for those rebuilding their lives after discharge, divorce, or death of a spouse. Financial assistance with relocation or emergency shelter. Scholarships for those returning to school or seeking higher education. Microloans to assist in starting a new business. Our military personnel face many unique and challenging situations which extend to their families as well. Through our services at the Women’s Center they have a safe place to heal. The men and women of our armed forces have pledged to protect and defend the freedoms upon which our country was built. Through the course of this service, these brave and committed men and women face a multitude of problems, which we endeavor to address through our special programs. 15 Camp GAIA Girl’s Adolescence Independence & Achievement Camp The Women’s Center believes that a woman attains positive self-esteem, confidence, and knowledge in her adolescence years. The Center has held it’s fourth annual camp with full registration and an ever growing demand for additional openings. Last year our program was under the expert supervision of Patti Baxter Coleman who has served as director of this highly successful program for the past three years. th th Camp GAIA focuses on girls entering 5 grade through 8 grade. Vice Pres. / Medical Director Rachel Terry Health First Health Plans Women’s Center North Guild 19 Treasurer Harris-Retired Women’s Center Guild In the summer of 1995, Women’s Center Board member Marion Collins saw the need for a fundraising arm to operate exclusively for the benefit of the Center. By August she formed a steering committee consisting of Gini Dryden, Cynthia Brubaker, Joyce Boudrie, Celia Keen and Jenny Gessler. Two membership coffees were held and attracted 45 members. The group officially became known as the Women’s Center Guild and elected officers at its formation meeting in November. The first board meeting was held in December and the board was installed at the Guild’s kickoff meeting in January, 1996. The Women’s Center Guild, composed of volunteers from all walks of life, works hard to broaden the base of the financial support for the Women’s Center to meet its mission. The guild acts as good-will ambassadors and advocates. With more than 200 members, the guild strives to increase community awareness about homelessness, hunger, self-sufficiency, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. The Women’s Center South Guild has had a rich history in fund raising and special events. The longest running and widely known fund raiser, To Serve with Love, is still going strong which includes a women’s tennis tournament with a luncheon and silent auction and netted $14,000. In 2013, the guild held a Dude Looks Like A Lady event held at Island Lincoln Mercury Show Room on Merritt Island and netted $105,000. The annual Kitchen Tour event also had another successful year raising over $12,000. In 2013 the Women’s Center South Guild, through their creative and resourceful efforts, raised $242,814 to benefit the Women’s Center’s many programs and services. These financial contributions have allowed the Women’s Center to continue to provide services while being faced with funding cuts due to the economic conditions. The Women’s Center North Guild formed in 2011, through a series of group meetings called Vision for Victims. They support the efforts of the Titusville office and safe house and gain recognition for our services. 20 We welcome you to become a member and join one of our Guilds. The Women’s Center Guild is responsible for conducting fundraising events to benefit the Center’s operations. Many members also volunteer to assist with regular food drives and volunteer at the Center in a variety of roles. 21 Women’s Center South Guild Board of Directors June 2013 - December 2014 Co-Presidents: Dani Clevens & Robin Panicola First Vice President: Irene Halliquist Co-Secretary: Marty Berry & Lois Roberts Publicity Chair: Darcia Jones-Francey Co-Membership: Chair- Sherri Otcenasek & Jody Stork Communications Co– Chair: Dolly Casko Fund Development Co-Chair: Loraine Totty & Meghan Guy Finance Committee: Rosemary Bain & Anna M. The response was overwhelming, generating revenues of $100,000 the first year. In June of that year, the partners gathered at the Women’s Center to dedicate the inaugural Partners Plaque and share in their common goal of enhancing the quality of life for families in Brevard. Donation requests are made only once a year better utilizing volunteer efforts. Flexible paymentoptions eliminate timing problems due to charitable budget restrictions. Most important, the Women’s Center is guaranteed funding to budget programs and services for the coming year. Our Partners are generously supporting the Women’s Center Guild with annual financial contributions. Their commitment to the Women’s Center and our community is priceless. Together, we are creating opportunity and new directions for women, children, and families throughout Brevard County. 24 Women’s Center Partners 2013 Life Partners - Parrish Medical Center • Ambika Ravindran and Dr Ravindran B Palaniyandi. Zies Beverly Zito How to Contribute Since 1975, when the Women’s Center was first founded, we have depended on the generosity of friends who not only give of their time and talents, but who also offer financial contributions. Our mission remains to empower women and their families by providing support, education, counseling, information and services. We continue to depend on the generosity of supporters who share their financialresources with us and become ambassadors to our mission. As you can see through the personal story and testimonies of our clients the Women’s Center has touched the lives of many. As we continue to change the lives of women for the better and move forward we invite you to become a special part of our mission through your financial commitment to the Women’s Center. There are many ways that you can contribute to the Women’s Center and helpwomen help themselves: • • • • • • • • • • • • Outright Gifts Securities and Stocks Named Endowment Funds Estates and Bequests Gift Annuities In-Kind Goods and Services Matching Gifts Real Estate Signature Event Sponsorship Memorials and Tributes Vehicle Donations Volunteer Services Your planned gifts can be revocable—so that you can change your mind at anytime. Or they can be irrevocable—so that you benefit from an immediate income tax deduction. The key feature of planned gifts is that they provide important benefits to you, as well as the Women’s Center. Planned giving is, in many cases, the most thoughtful of gifts and allows you to change lives for the better—forever. For more information on how you can be involved, please contact the development department at (321) 242-3110, Ext. 306 or visit our website at www.WomensCenterInBrevard.org. 36 2013 Statement of Operations Income & Expenses INCOME Grants $370,206 Fundraising/Special Events $339,084 Furniture & More Store $335,116 Program Service Fees $283,470 United Way $117,966 Contributions $91,656 Temporarily Restr Accts $80,096 Miscellaneous $22,556 Specific Assistance $2,122 TOTAL REVENUE $1,642,272 EXPENSES Employee Salaries $690,971 Direct Client Services $205,301 Employee Benefits $199,033 Occupancy/Rent $166,678 Investments $101,738 Professional Fees/Audit $76,656 Housing Units $67,499 Supplies/Telephone/Postage $46,084 Special events $39,155 Travel/Training $27,760 Printing/Advertising/Publication $13,326 Miscellaneous $5,442 Membership Dues $1,469 TOTAL EXPENSES $1,641,112 37 Our programs evolve to meet the changing needs in women’s lives.
