This annual celebration of the grape has become a February highlight in Vancouver, with a full slate of wine tastings and parties, lunches, brunches and dinners, seminars, and a three-day conference for trade professionals. The heart of VanWineFest, however, is the International Festival Tastings, where all 170 wineries gather together in one room to showcase their wines. What sets this festival apart from other wine events is the number of top winery personalities from around the world who travel to Vancouver to participate in the week’s 53 events. You can identify these visiting vine stars (owners, winemakers, senior executives) in the Acura Tasting Room or at special events by the royal blue lanyard holding their nametag. Also look for their names in the Wineries & Wines section of this program. Don’t hesitate to ask them anything you want to know about their wines. The Wine World is Here to share their knowledge and the fruits of their labours with you. The Acura Tasting Room is organized alphabetically within each country of origin, from Argentina to the United States, with a special international section for Sake. The highlight of the room is sure to be the Savour Australia Theme Country section, where you will find all 55 of Australia’s participating wineries organized by region, as well as interactive tasting stations themed around Cool Climate, Mod Oz, the Chardonnay Revolution, the Epicurean Way and Wine Science with the Australian Wine Research Institute. Flip the book over for an informative guide to the history, evolution and revolution of Australian wine over the past two centuries. It would not be possible to produce a festival of this size and quality without the contributions of a great many individuals and organizations, whose efforts ensure the success of this annual fundraising event for our charitable beneficiary, Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. The Board of Directors would like to thank the participating wineries, their principals and agents; the participating country consulates; our sponsors and partner restaurants, hotels and venues; our dedicated staff and hundreds of volunteers; our key stakeholders in the community, including the BCLDB and IVSA; and you, members of the public and trade, who make the Vancouver International Wine Festival the best wine and food festival in North America. Randy Kaardal Chair Board of Directors Vancouver International Wine Festival Society MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I’m pleased to welcome you to Vancouver’s annual weeklong cultural celebration of wine and food. Now in its 37th edition, the 2015 festival is showcasing 170 wineries from 14 countries, including 55 wineries from our theme country, Australia. The Acura Tasting Room is where we bring the world of wine to you. In order to enjoy the full global experience, be sure to visit at least one winery from a few different Australian wine regions and each of the 13 other countries, as well as the various wine tasting stations. All the wineries are pouring exciting wines, so look for a less busy table for the best opportunity to connect with the winery representatives at the table, all of whom are winemakers, owners or senior executives, with unique insights into their product and the stories behind them. You can purchase your favourite wines at the onsite BC Liquor Stores Festival Wine Shop, or BUY A CASE right at the table and have it delivered to your preferred BC Liquor Store. Enjoy an engaging and safe festival. We look forward to welcoming you back next year and many more years to come. Cheers! Harry Hertscheg Executive Director Vancouver International Wine Festival THANK YOU FROM BARD ON THE BEACH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL From all of us at our beloved Shakespeare Festival – welcome and thank you to all the winemakers who have assembled here and everyone who is participating in and supporting the 37th annual Vancouver International Wine Festival. As the charitable beneficiary of the Wine Festival, we spend your money wisely and channel it to excel and do extraordinary work on our stages each summer. Your generous support also helps subsidize thousands of tickets for youth in our community, as well as many other innovative education programs, both on our site and in local schools year-round. Levine. The inaugural festival in 1979 featured one vintner – Robert Mondavi – and saw approximately 1,000 people attend the two-day event at Hycroft, the Shaughnessy mansion owned by Vancouver’s University Women’s Club. By its fourth year, the festival had grown to attract 45 California wineries, becoming known as the California Wine Festival. The ninth festival in 1987 was the first multi-national event, with wineries from seven countries showcasing their wines. In 1988, VanWineFest moved to the Vancouver Convention Centre, where the main International Festival Tastings have been held ever since. The festival is now annually scheduled for the last week of February. In 1996, VanWineFest began shining the spotlight on specific wine regions or countries by featuring a new area each year, with the French wine region Bordeaux as the inaugural theme. This year, the theme country is Australia, featuring two centuries of history, evolution and revolution in Australian winemaking. Since 2004, VanWineFest has highlighted an annual global focus, with Syrah (aka Shiraz) under the spotlight this year. Today VanWineFest attracts some of the biggest industry names from around the world and is firmly established as the continent’s premier wine event and among the biggest, best and oldest wine events in the world. It features wine tastings and pairings, gourmet dinners and luncheons, educational seminars and culinary competitions. This is a rare opportunity to meet owners, winemakers and senior representatives from wineries around the globe. For either the experienced wine lover or the novice, the festival has something to please every palate and pocketbook. BARD ON THE BEACH Mission: To perform, explore and celebrate the genius of William Shakespeare. Vision: To create an enduring contribution to the cultural fabric of the community as an inspiring centre of Shakespeare performance, education and understanding. Celebrating its 26th Season in 2015, Bard on the Beach is the Vancouver International Wine Festival’s charitable beneficiary. One of Canada’s largest not-for-profit, professional Shakespeare festivals, Bard’s home is a magnificent waterfront setting in Vancouver’s Vanier Park where it offers Shakespeare plays, related dramas and special events in two modern performance tents every summer. The 2015 season, running from June 4 to September 26, opens with Shakespeare’s hilarious audience favourite, The Comedy of Errors, playing on the BMO Mainstage in repertory with the epic tragedy King Lear, a co-production with Theatre Calgary and starring Shaw & Stratford Festival veteran Ben Campbell as Lear. In the intimate Douglas Campbell tent, the Howard Family Stage hosts a music-filled Jazz Age setting of Love’s Labour’s Lost; it alternates with a world premiere of a new play based on best-selling author C.C. Humphreys’ historical novel Shakespeare’s Rebel. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR - CHRISTOPHER GAZE JUNE 4 - SEPT 26, 2015 On the On the Howard Family Stage In addition to its plays, the Festival offers opera, choral and orchestral concerts, wine tastings and educational events. The tented Bard Village is home to many activities and amenities including informal pre-show In A Nutshell talks, concession and bar services, and a Bard boutique. Bard engages a team of exceptional actors, directors, designers and technicians each season, along with yearround administrative staff and teaching artists; it is also supported by more than 250 volunteers each year. Bard’s critically-acclaimed plays repeatedly draw full houses; season attendance reached a record 100,000 in 2014 and more than 1.4 million patrons have enjoyed the Bard experience since 1990. Tickets on sale in April • All seats reserved SIGN UP NOW FOR BARD E-NEWS for exclusive offers and play details! Through its constantly expanding community outreach, Bard hosts the popular Young Shakespeareans workshops for youth and teens at the site during the summer and Bard in the Classroom workshops for students and teachers during the school term. In 2014, it launched the Riotous Youth program to provide further Shakespearean theatre education to some of its summer workshop graduates. Bard on the Beach is extremely proud and honoured to be the Wine Festival’s charitable recipient. With Shiraz grown in 50 of Australia’s 65 wine regions, it’s hardly surprising that Shiraz is the rock star of Australian wine. Shiraz was one of the original varieties brought to Australia and it is certainly one of the most successful. It has long commanded the spotlight since the first Shiraz vines were planted more than 200 years ago. Some of Australia’s most famous wines are Shiraz and there are many vineyards scattered throughout the country with vines that are more than 100 years old. What may surprise you, however, is just how diverse Australia’s Shiraz offering is today and how the style has evolved as more wine regions started producing local expressions of this classic grape variety. With Shiraz the global focus at this year’s festival, Wine Australia has declared it Shiraz Week. A global call to action, Shiraz Week will encourage wine drinkers–wherever they are–to ‘taste, tweet and talk’ about Shiraz by joining the conversation. #ShirazWeek SHIRAZ GROWN IN AUSTRALIA REGIONAL DIVERSITY (hectares) Shiraz is grown in regions across thee co country oun untr trry in varied climates and soils; there are coolre co ool olclimate, medium-bodied and spicy sstyles tyle ty lees flav avo vour ured eed d through to more full-bodied, richly fla flavoured and textured warm-climate versions. s.. HUNTER VALLEY The Hunter Valley was the first commercial wine region in Australia, established in 1828. It has one of the warmest, wettest and most humid climates of all Australia’s wine regions with rain a constant in the latter stages of most vintages. MARGARET RIVER Margaret River is a relatively late arrival on the Australian fine wine scene. The assessment of the viticultural potential by Dr John Gladstone in the 1960s started the initial expansion of the region into winemaking. Although Margaret River doesn’t have the history of Coonawarra, its Cabernet Sauvignon is its equal in reputation. The maritime climate and gravelly soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional quality and the regional style tends to be elegant and aromatic. Blackcurrant, violets and mint with velvety tannins are signature characteristics of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. The region is also known for its highly regarded Chardonnay, which is typically rich with ripe, complex flavours but finished with citrus acidity. The first vineyards were planted in 1865, but it was not until the late 1970s that the region hit its stride. Today, there are seven distinct wine-producing regions although officially the whole island is considered one wine region. The influence of the Southern Ocean on this cool climate region results in average growing season temperatures comparable to Champagne, France. Tasmania’s sparkling wines, made in the traditional method, are some of the best to be found in Australia and they’ve developed a world-class reputation for their elegance, balance and intensity of fruit. There are now sixth generation grape growing families and Barossa is home to Australia’s largest collection of old vines, with some dating back to the 1860s. Langmeil’s Freedom vineyard (planted in 1843) is possibly the oldest Shiraz vineyard in the world. Shiraz occupies 50 per cent of the vineyard plantings and is by any measure the specialty variety of this region. Typically full-bodied with ripe fruit and plush tannins, the very best examples of Barossa Shiraz moderate this natural richness with balanced acidity and focused pure fruit character. Grenache is often blended with both Shiraz and Mourvèdre to produce a classically complex and textured red. A range of sub-regional Shiraz styles exists; dark chocolate, blueberry and spice characters are common and wines are typically medium- to full-bodied with vibrant, pure fruit. While it’s essentially a warm climate region, there are moderating effects from its proximity to Lake Alexandrina and the Southern Ocean. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the signature grapes and, while single varietal wines are produced, many in the region would tell you that the blend of these two classic varieties is the best expression of Langhorne Creek red wine. REGIONAL FACT FILE: Total Vineyard Area: 5,070 ha (2012) Red: 81% White: 19% Major Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz Single variety Shiraz is typically rich and full-flavoured with soft tannins; exhibiting blackberry, chocolate and liquorice characters. Although not extensively planted, Langhorne Creek Verdelho has developed a reputation as a regional specialty. Light-bodied, juicy and fresh, these wines are meant to be enjoyed young.
