Important Term 3 & 4 Dates for your Diary
Kia ora koutou
Exam time is almost upon us. It is the business end of the year
for our NCEA students. We are doing everything we can to support students as they prepare for their final internal assessments and exams and I know that whānau/parents are doing so
as well.
This can be a stressful time for students. If you do have concerns about your
young person, please contact the College and we can offer special support. Two
ways that parents/whānau can help are:
1. Positively encourage and praise students as they study.
2. Attend the 'Meet the Teacher" evening on Wednesday 23rd September.
This will be a chance to discuss NCEA students' final report with each teacher.
For the first four weeks in Term 4, the library will be open for supervised exam
study from 5.30pm-8.30pm. Students can register for this at the library.
Choosing the right course in 2016
Year 10, 11 & 12 students and parents are invited to the course information
evening which is also being held on Wednesday 23rd September. Junior
students will also be choosing their subjects for 2016 over the next few weeks.
The Course Selection Guide can be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/subjectchoice

Confirmed Education Review Office Report
We have received the confirmed report following ERO's recent visit. Like all
reports, it contains lots of positives, as well as a number of recommendations
for improvement. It is available at www.ero.govt.nz or we have some hard
copies at the office.
Please feel free to contact me directly at any stage. I can be contacted at:
principal@linwoodcollege.school.nz or on 027 222 4798.
Linda Tame - Relieving Principal
Deputy Principal’s Message
On Tuesday we enjoyed the 21 ̊C day which created superb
conditions for our school house tug-of-war competition.
Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event and the
fantastic team spirit.
It has been heartening to see students exhibiting the Linwood College
values - curiosity (manawareka), honesty (whakapono) and respect
(manaakitanga). When observed displaying these values, students’ receive Values Vouchers and their names are put into the fortnightly draw
for prizes. Amongst the end of term prizes is a wonderful item - a 19”
LED Veon television (with built-in DVD player). This will be drawn during
our end of term Celebration Assembly along with the announcement of
the top House and celebration of student successes.
With only two weeks remaining our staff are focusing on all students
being on time, in class and fully engaged in learning to ensure that they
are making the most of the remainder of this term.

FROM THE LINWOOD COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRPERSON
Dear Parents and Care-givers,
A big thank you to all parents who responded to the recent survey about the sort of person who would likely be an excellent
principal for Linwood College. In recent weeks the Board has consulted with a wide range of people, including parents and
caregivers, the parents and caregivers of Maori and Pasifika students, the students themselves, the student leaders and the
College staff, in order to get a picture of the sort of person who would best fit the principal position. From the comments received, the Board with the assistance of the Limited Statutory Manager, Terri Johnstone, has developed an application package which has been posted on the College website. I would encourage you to browse this material as it provides a very comprehensive picture of the sort of person we would all like to be the next principal of the College.
The position will be advertised in the Education Gazette during September as well as in the main national newspapers. We
have developed a timeline for the appointment and we are confident that we will have an appointment made in time for the
successful applicant to assume the position at the start of the 2016 school year.
While Linda Tame, the Relieving Principal, was initially appointed only for Terms 2 and 3, since Margaret Paiti has resigned
from the school, Linda has agreed to remain at the school for Term 4 as well. The Board is grateful to Linda for her willingness
to remain at the school for the rest of the year, providing continuity and stability for the College.
Margaret Paiti’s resignation from the College was effective from mid-October. Margaret became Principal of Linwood only a
couple of months prior to the September 2010 earthquake. Following the February 2011 earthquake and the resulting damage
to the College, Linwood was co-located to the Cashmere High School site for around six months. Disruption to the College was
evident, particularly as families and students moved from east Christchurch. The Board thanks Margaret for her efforts on behalf of the College in the months and years following the earthquakes, and wishes her well for her personal and professional
future.
One of the early tasks of the new principal will be to initiate the process for the rebuild of the College. In spite of on-going
speculation about where this will occur, every indication is that the College will be rebuilt on the current site in Aldwins Road.
At this stage timelines are vague, however realistically we expect a new school to be occupied no later than 2019. If the planning and design occurs with few hitches, occupation of the new school could be as soon as 2018.
At the start of Term 3 the Education Review Office undertook a review of the College, as part of its normal cycle of school reviews. The Board welcomed this review, and particularly the opportunity it provided for external evaluation of teaching and
learning at the College. The review identified areas of strength within the school, as well as areas for the Board and staff to
further work on. ERO will be returning to the school in 1 to 2 years to measure progress made against the recommendations
made. ERO has now completed its report and this will be published on the ERO website before mid-September –
www.ero.govt.nz. A link will be provided on the College website to access the report.
As a previous secondary school principal, I am very aware of the importance on on-going learning and study as the key ingredients in school success. As parents we play a very important role in this, particularly as we move into the final term of the year.
I have never met a young person who doesn’t want to be successful. Success at school is largely the result of the effort our
young people are willing to put into their work. Our task as parents is to provide our children with encouragement to work
hard and to support them in all ways possible with respect to this.
Kind regards,
Dave Turnbull,
Chairperson,
Linwood College Board of Trustees,

Are you interested in attending a free parenting programme?
The parenting programme that you will participate in is called
'Tuning into Kids (TIK). The parenting programme focuses on the
emotions of both you and your stepchild - it teaches you skills to
become more aware of your stepchild's emotions and how to respond to them. Past research has shown that this helps to improve
the parent- child relationship as well as children's behaviour and
social skills. The TIK programme is a six-week long group parenting
programme with weekly two hour evening sessions. The programme will involve group discussions, demonstrations, video clips,
role plays and homework activities. If you're interested in participating in the TIK programme and step-TIK study, or would like more

Winter Sports Wrap-Up
A massive thank you to all the staff, students, parents, community members and
volunteers that have given up their time to help make this winter sport a successful one! We have had a lot of great teams come together this year, achieving
success in terms of being great team mates to each other, training well, and
some in terms of performance.
In August Scott Gilligan, the Futsal Whites’ coach, held a
coaching session with our futsal students. Scott really enjoyed
the talent on display and appreciated the enthusiasm of the
students involved.
Key Performers this year have been the Badminton Boys and Girls who go to
their grade Finals. Yuka Ohi and Wharepapa Tapiata-Bright also performed well
in the Canterbury Championships. With his partner Wharepapa won the Boys
Doubles (1st overall), Semi final in Boys Singles (4th overall). Yuka won Girls
Doubles Plate (3rd overall) and Singles Plate (3rd overall).
Football are preparing for their Dunedin Tournament and their 6-0 win in the Final
of their Division has given them a great confidence boost ahead of the Week 7
tournament week.
Netball has been massive this year, with the academy continuing and teams
becoming stronger and more determined than ever. The Year 10s coached by
Dannielle Jones made their way to the final overcoming adversity. Karen Farrell's
Senior Team were the highlight of the year winning their grade with their final
against Rangi Ruru. Earlier in the year they were the recipients of some great
feedback about their team.
In Basketball our numbers of teams increased this year, and we had our
Senior Boys in the U20 grade for the first time ever. Our Girls also got into
Division 2 for the first time! Our Year 9 Boys coached by our Deputy Head
Boy came 3rd overall in their grade! Our other teams have improved well
throughout the year and next year I can see great things ahead.

Outstanding Sportsmanship Award - Wharepapa Tapiata-Bright (Yr 13)
On Monday, August 17, 2015 at 7:04 PM, Matt wrote:
Dear Linwood College Staff,
Re: Canterbury Secondary School Badminton Tournament Winners
We held the Canterbury Secondary Schools Badminton Championships over the weekend and I wanted to contact
you regarding Wharepapa Tapiata-Bright who played in the senior section of the event for Year 11/12/13 players.
Wharepapa did extremely well in the tournament and with his playing partner, won the boys’ doubles event. He
was also a semi-finalist in both the boys’ singles and the mixed doubles events.
Aside from his playing achievements during the tournament, I wanted to advise you that he was awarded the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for the day. Wharepapa conducted himself on and off the court with both courtesy
and respect to players and officials at all times and he was a pleasure to have at the event.
He is a very likeable young man and is a credit to his family and to Linwood College.
