Pro-Life Quote: “The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than ant cathedral – a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than all other creatures. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation...What on God’s earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?” St. Vincent de Paul Reflections: Sometimes we Christians can get so caught up in the doing that we forget simply taking time to be with our God, is as important to our Christian witness, as actually doing Christian acts. Taking care with our Sunday worship and even taking time to rest on Sunday can be acts of witnessing to Christ. It’s a challenge to keep some balance in our lives between the demands of our everyday activities and our desire to give God homage and praise. When things get hectic, the first temptation is to skip prayer time because that seems to have the least immediate results for us. Our deadlines and schedules don’t change, but it seems prayer time can be dispensable. In fact, cheating on our prayer time over time can radically affect everything we do. Christian witnessing means God is our focus. (Living Liturgy, p.132) Anyone suffering through a hardship is encouraged to contact the Saint Vincent de Paul Society for assistance. Phone 301-739-0390 ext 124. Divine Mercy: “Suddenly I hear d these wor ds in my soul: ‘My daughter, I assure you of a permanent income on which you will live. Your duty will be to trust completely in My Goodness, and My Duty will be to give you all you need. I am making Myself dependent upon your trust: if your trust is great, then My Generosity will be without limit.” (Diary #548) Inspirational Quote : “The longer you stay away from Holy Communion, the more your soul will become weak, and in the end you will become dangerously indifferent.” – St. John Bosco MONTH OF MARYMARYMusic Recital St. Mary Catholic Church 224 W. ASK THE PRIEST Father, How do we justify calling a priest “Father” when the Bible says otherwise? You are talking about Matthew 23:9. It is very dangerous to pluck Scripture quotations out of context. While there are those who says we should call no man “father,” yet that same passage says that we should call no one “teacher.” These same people have no problem saying they are a “Sunday School teacher.” Furthermore, Psalm 53:2 says “There is no God.” In order, to understand that statement, we need to read it in context. The full context says, “Fools in their heart say, ‘There is no God.’” Jesus here is using a literary device called hyperbole, or exaggeration; like Matthew 5:29, where Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.” Jesus does NOT want us to do bodily harm to ourselves but rather is making a point by the use of exaggeration. If we are not to call anyone on earth our father than the New Testament is violating Jesus’ command several times over; for example: John 8:56, Luke 15, Mark 15:21, Matthew 10:21, etc. For example, In Luke 12:53, Jesus talk about a family being divided over belief in Him and says “a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father.” Is Jesus contradicting His own commandment? In 1John 2:13-14, it reads “I write to you, fathers,” was St. John disobeying the Lord’s command? And what about St. Paul, who wrote in Romans 4: 16, “follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us.” Was St. Paul disobeying the teaching of Christ? Or what about 1Thess 2:11 “As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his children.” In Phil1:9 and 1Cor 4:15, St. Paul talks about begetting spiritual children. Because it is often the priest that baptizes new Christians, priests are called ‘father” because, like St. Paul, they have become the spiritual father of those reborn in Christ. “Ask The Priest” is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table.“ Knights of Columbus New council website for keeping informed of council news: www.kofc1365.org Every practical Catholic man over the age of 18 should become a Knight.
