FINAL CAMPAIGN REPORT Gifts and Pledges received through February 1, 2014 Why I Gave The quality of life and care at our LSC facilities is superb, I think because they are pervaded by a spirit begotten of a partnership with the church and all the many clients, employees and friends who identify with the spirit of our faith. I just wanted to affirm that ongoing relationship, and that's why I gave. — The Rev. Richard Fritz, Lutherhaus board member In the 16 years I have been employed with Lutheran Services Carolinas, I have witnessed our company grow and expand. I gave to the Keeping the Promise campaign because it was an opportunity for me to contribute financially in that growth and expansion of our ministry. We do not have stockholders, but it was a way for me as an employee to “invest” in our ministry. Our ministry is built upon John 10:10, “I came so that they may have life, and have it abundantly,” and I wanted to be a part of it. — Tina Marshall, pharmacy billing We were delighted to be asked to participate in the campaign and have been thrilled with its success. Our interest began with a call from Steve Gerhard whose involvement gave it great credibility. As we learned about the mission and the leadership team at LSA (now LSC) we became committed. While we wish that we lived up to God’s expectations and followed Christ’s teachings every day, we know we don’t. However, through participation in the Keeping the Promise campaign we were given a great opportunity to serve those who serve the most needy among us. We feel blessed and thankful for the opportunity to participate. — Linda Lee and Mark Tonnesen, Lutheran Services Carolinas board member It was a lofty goal: raising $5 million, especially during a weak economy. But Lutheran Services Carolinas senior services, formerly known as Lutheran Services for the Aging, understood that growth was necessary to pursue its mission of caring for older adults, a population predicted to double in North Carolina from 2000 to 2030, In 2008, the LSC Board of Trustees approved a $75 million master development plan that would construct four new and replacement skilled nursing homes over a six-year period, as well as provide targeted renovations at Trinity Village, Trinity Place, and Trinity Oaks. A statewide home and community-based services program would be launched, and the Research Triangle area capital fund would be expanded. But the balance – at least $5 million – would need to be raised through contributions from individuals, businesses, congregations, and foundations. And that’s where the capital campaign, Keeping the Promise, came in. After its quiet phase, the campaign kicked off at the NC Synod Assembly in June 2010 and continued in congregations through May 2013. Despite conditions less than conducive to fundraising, LSC not only met but far exceeded its goal, hitting $5,742,647 as of Feb. 1, 2014, including two estate gifts totaling $623,616.31 that were board-designated for the campaign. With the help of roughly 4,000 donors, all projects are completed or currently under development. Keeping the Promise donors have blessed LSC’s ministry. LSC is grateful for their generosity and humbly accepts the responsibility to continue to use those gifts wisely and well. Much of the funding for that development plan would come from existing agency funds, financing, and the sale of properties in Winston-Salem, Hickory and Wilmington. KEEPING THE PROMISE FINAL CAMPAIGN REPORT | 1 Project Progress One of the major goals of Keeping the Promise was the construction of four new and replacement nursing homes in Wilmington, Winston-Salem, Hickory and Clemmons. The first skilled nursing home to be built as part of the LSC master plan was Trinity Grove in Wilmington, which opened its doors in June of 2011. In 2011, Trinity Grove was built in Wilmington, allowing LSC to serve the eastern part of the state. A year later, in June of 2012, Trinity Glen opened at 849 Waterworks Road in eastern Winston-Salem, one of two skilled nursing homes to replace the old Lutheran Home – Winston-Salem. In July of 2013, residents of Lutheran Home – Hickory West moved to their new home, Trinity Ridge, at 2140 Medical Park Drive in Hickory. In 2012, LSC built Trinity Glen, one of two nursing homes to replace Lutheran Home – Winston-Salem. 2 | LUTHERAN SERVICES CAROLINAS The last of the new skilled nursing homes included in the master plan, Trinity Elms in Clemmons, is set to open in June of this year. Trinity Elms is the second of the two new nursing homes replacing Lutheran Home – WinstonSalem. The health and rehab residence sits adjacent to Trinity Elms assisted living. Renovations at Trinity Oaks health and rehab include the replacement of all exterior windows. At Trinity Oaks independent living, corridor renovations include new paint, carpet, window treatments, lighting, artwork, and the addition of handrails. At Trinity Village, two nursing stations have been converted to family living and seating areas. Remaining targeted renovations at Trinity Village, Trinity Oaks, and Trinity Place continue to evolve. The campaign has also funded a portion of the statewide Home and CommunityBased Services Project designed to help seniors age in place, living safely and independently in their own homes. The Research Triangle Area Capital Fund was established through a capital campaign conducted by LSC senior services in the 1990s. With the help of Keeping the Promise, that fund has been expanded in anticipation of the day when additional senior services can be provided in that area. Until then, interest on the fund is being used to provide congregational grants to support senior services for Research Triangle congregations. Trinity Ridge was completed in 2013, replacing Lutheran Home – Hickory West Trinity Elms health and rehab in Clemmons is scheduled to be operational by June of 2014. Stephen P. Gerhard entered the life eternal. Pastor Gerhard was a wise counselor, a spiritual advisor, and a shepherd to many. He was a loving husband and father, and a doting grandfather. He was a courageous role model in his fight against cancer, a gardener, a maker of doll houses, and a trusted friend. He enjoyed ball games and a good joke. And it was evident to all who knew him that he loved the Lord. Among the many roles Pastor Gerhard fulfilled with passion was his role as Capital Campaign Director for the Keeping the Promise campaign. Pastor Gerhard laid the groundwork for the campaign and later was joined by Co-Director Emily Phillips, who saw the campaign to its completion. Pastor Gerhard left LSC with his moving hymn, God of Promise, which contains the lines: “By your strength we keep the promise, faithful to you.” Pastor Gerhard was faithful to God and to LSC, and it would have brought him great joy to see how LSC supporters have faithfully kept the promise. KEEPING THE PROMISE FINAL CAMPAIGN REPORT | 5 Promise Partners Promises Kept Without its Promise Partners and their generous gifts, Lutheran Services Carolinas would not have met and exceeded its $5 million dollar capital campaign goal. Through these generous gifts to Keeping the Promise, the senior services ministry of Lutheran Services Carolinas is in a position to continue to grow and thrive. Sam Zumwalt Demonstrating the Vision: Congregation Gifts The Keeping the Promise capital campaign was kicked off at the 2010 NC Synod Assembly with great enthusiasm. The launch included a hymn written by the Rev. Stephen Gerhard, co-chair of the campaign, with these lines: Congregational supporters were indeed faithful, giving generously to Keeping the Promise. The totals listed on the following pages reflect pledges and gifts to the campaign received as of February 1, 2014. Congregation phase totals include only those pledges and gifts made by individuals and churches during the six-week congregation appeal. Leadership phase totals include pledges and gifts made at any point during the campaign except for those made during the six-week congregational appeal; leadership gifts also include any gifts not accompanied by a congregational pledge form. “By your strength we keep the promise, Faithful to you. To our parents who have held us, Faithful to you. Using gifts that you have given, May we demonstrate the vision, Of a life in Christ now risen!
