PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Paige Perkins, Memphis Grizzlies
As I embark on my Presidents term, please know that I’m
honored and excited to act in this capacity. I’m here to serve
the membership and realize that I’m afforded this opportunity,
and all the blessings that come with it, at your discretion.
We have an incredible group of women that are enthusiastic and ready to serve our
organization in their board positions. Please know that your board is committed
to making our chapter better and we’ve adopted a philosophy of “no energy to
the negative stuff.” We only have so much energy to give in the scheme of our
daily lives and EWI is already getting just a fraction of that energy so it needs to be
POSITIVE! I plan to lead with a positive mentality and LET IT GO.. MOVE IT
ON.. PUSH IT OUT! We have so much to accomplish and we’ll succeed if we keep
our efforts focused.
It’s hard to believe the holiday season is already upon us. I love this time of year,
because I get to spend time with my family, on the Gulf coast of Mississippi, which
I only get to see a few times a year. I can’t imagine seeing my EWI friends only a
few times year! We share such a unique support system that expands beyond the
professional development and networking, and is a genuine desire to share and
undergird one another. If you haven’t attended many meetings, I encourage you to
make a concerted effort during the next year to arrange your schedule so you can
spend a little time with us each month. As I mentioned in my installation speech,
your EWI experience is what you make of it. One of the joys of our EWI
membership is networking with extraordinary women who you can learn from that
creates “professional development” for you on an entirely different level.
I hope you’ll plan to join us on November 21st at Hicks Convention Services, when
our very own Sherry Fields will speak to us on the history of our First Ladies. We’ll
enjoy a traditional thanksgiving meal served by your board members. See Ladies,
I really meant that we were here to serve you!
Our December meeting has been moved up one week to Thursday, December 12th,
and we will be at the University Club with its beautiful holiday décor. Be on the
lookout for more information on special projects associated with this meeting, as I
am happy to report that we will once again be partnering with the House of Grace
and Lisa Forrest is spearheading those efforts through our BCDP committee.
Since this connect serves as the final edition for 2013 and my last message to you
before 2014... I love this quote from Bob Hope…
My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving
others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?

2013 Freedom Award Honorees
National Civil Rights Museum
November 6, 2013
The Freedom Award is an annual event for the National
Civil Rights Museum. Held each year in the fall, the
Freedom Award honors individuals who have made
significant contributions in civil rights and who have
laid the foundation for present and future leaders in the
battle for human rights.
Since 1991, the Freedom Award has served as a symbol of the ongoing fight for human rights both in America
and worldwide. Honorees are chosen each year for their tireless contributions in civil and human rights,
education, the arts, sports & community service, justice, and for their dedication to creating opportunity for
the disenfranchised.
International Freedom Award—Mary Robinson
Mary Robinson is the President of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. She served as
President of Ireland from 1990-1997 and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 19972002. She is a member of the Elders and the Club of Madrid and the recipient of numerous honors and
awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States Barack Obama.
She is a member of the Lead Group of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. In March 2013, Mary was
appointed the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa.
National Freedom Award - Geoffrey Canada
Geoffrey Canada has dedicated much of his life to community outreach with a special focus on education and
providing resources to poor families. His passion for education and inner-city youth directly tie back to his
own experience growing up in “rough” South Bronx, New York. The educator and president of the Harlem
Children's Zone, a non-profit organization that provides education and support to local children and their
families, has become a “shining example for how to save America's failing public schools.” In the grim public
education documentary "Waiting for Superman," Canada stands out as the singular voice of hope in a film
that paints the nation's public school system as suffering and struggling.
Lifetime Achievement Award - Earl G. Graves
Earl G. Graves recognized early the importance of Black consumer power, as well as the need for more black
businesses. Considered by many to be the “Black Business Bible,” Graves’ Black Enterprise Magazine, has
remained steadfast to its mission of educating and empowering entrepreneurship in the black community.
The business has grown immensely, and so has its reach. Now formally titled Earl G. Graves Limited, the
company is now home to programs and events such as the Wealth for Life Initiative, the Black Enterprise
Women of Power Summit, the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference + Expo and more. Broadcast
programs such as Black Enterprise Business Report and Our World with Black Enterprise also reach out to
an array of black entrepreneurs, corporate executives, investors and innovators.
Graves’ lifetime commitment to empowering black businesses and the economic of the black community has
forever changed how the community and the world perceive black businesses. He taught us to never underestimate black consumer power, nor to underestimate the power we each have to create our own success. He
leads by example and serves as a reminder of our ability not only to succeed, but also to thrive.

Grizzlies set to give thanks and tip-off
Season of Giving
November 6, 2013
The Memphis Grizzlies will be spreading holiday cheer across the City of Memphis as they prepare to give
thanks throughout the month of November. Grizzlies players, coaches, family members and staff, team up
with community partners to make a difference in the lives of children and families within the local community
by hosting several charitable events throughout the thanksgiving month to give thanks to the City of
Memphis.
The Grizzlies Thanksgiving Month tipped-off on November 7th, at Ed Rice Community Center (2907 N.
Watkins Street) where Grizzlies guard Tony Allen and forward Ed Davis provided and distributed food
baskets to 500 families for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The food baskets included turkey, macaroni
and cheese, stuffing, green beans, cornbread and brownie mix. In celebration of National Eating Healthy Day
which was on November 6th, the American Heart Association handed out apples to those who waited in line
to receive their basket.
The giving continued on November 12th, when Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph provided and distributed
450 Thanksgiving food baskets at Booker T. Washington H.S. (715 S. Lauderdale St.). Randolph also handed
out tickets to some families to attend an upcoming game. On Thursday, November 21st, Randolph will
distribute 450 more food baskets at Hamilton High School (1363 E. Person Ave.). During both events,
families are provided with information on how to have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving and refreshments
are provided to families waiting in line.
From November 5 through November 20, Grizzlies guard Jerryd Bayless is teaming up with K97 to give
three families a chance to win a $500 Kroger gift card and the opportunity to shop with Bayless on November
23rd at 9:30 a.m. More information or to nominate a family, visit k97fm.com.
On Sunday, November 24th, Grizzlies forward Quincy Pondexter will provide and distribute Thanksgiving
food baskets to the New Directions Christian Church community (6120 Winchester Rd.). As with the previous
giveaways, the families will be provided with information on healthy eating and refreshments will be provided
to families waiting in line.
The Lady Bears, comprised of women who play a significant role in the lives of Grizzlies players, coaches
and basketball operations staff, will be heading over to the Salvation Army (696 Jackson Ave.) on Sunday,
November 24th at 5 p.m. to serve dinner to guests of the Salvation Army. This marks the fifth year the Lady
Bears have provided Thanksgiving dinners for the women and children at the Salvation Army.
The team’s Thanksgiving Month continues as the Grizz Grannies and Grandpas join MIFA in their Meals
on Wheels program, Wednesday, November 20th, from 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. to deliver dinner to Memphians
and families in need for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Grizzlies Season of Giving will continue throughout the holiday season with the Grizzlies Annual Toy
Drive, player shopping sprees, player appearances at local hospitals and coat drives throughout December.
More information on these events can be found on the team website: http://www.nba.com/grizzlies

B/C/DP Holiday Philanthropic
Project Announcement
By Lisa Johnson, B/C/DP Director
The holidays are upon us and your B/C/DP committee is reaching out to you for support of our
annual philanthropic project.
This year, we are continuing our affiliation with The House of Grace, a non-profit shelter that
provides free, confidential assistance to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.
The shelter helps an estimated 1,200 women annually and assists with everything from counseling
and emergency housing, to utility bills, and getting them a bus ticket out of town. Often victims
arrive at the shelter with nothing as they literally were escaping a violent situation. This is where we
can help! While the shelter provides free assistance, it is not free to operate.
We are collecting funds for the House of Grace general operating budget with a portion allocated
toward a special holiday fund to ensure that those who will be at the Shelter for Christmas will not be
missed by Santa! We are also collecting personal hygiene items including new undergarments.
Donations will be collected at the November 21st Chapter meeting and presented to a House of Grace
representative at our December 12th meeting. You may also send your donation directly to Lisa
Johnson (Ernst & Young, 6410 Poplar Avenue, Suite 500, Memphis, TN 38119) or contact any of the
B/C/DP committee members listed below. *
Donations are tax deductible.
Thank you in advance for your contribution and for making a
difference in the lives of those women and children who have
sought shelter at the House of Grace.
*B/C/DP committee members: Janie Emerson, Tracey
Foldenauer, Angel Halpern, Lisa Johnson, Yvonne Joyner,

Facebook is a large part of the social media phenomenon which has grown in leaps and bounds over the last
decade. Since the core essence of Facebook is networking and given that "Connections" is the first core tenet
of EWI, I thought I would share some interesting facts about this form of social media. The average person
on Facebook is connected to about 200 people, which is a huge testament to the success of this tool. In
todays world, if your business is not investing in an active Facebook page, you are missing an opportunity to
reach approximately 750,000,000 unique visitors a month on the world’s largest social networking site.
Data collected from a recent study conducted by eBiz showed that 75% of businesses say Facebook has been
influential to their business. Facebook is the perfect venue to establish or breathe new life into your brand.
Facebook presents a unique opportunity for businesses to share content with fans on a daily basis. These
real time updates allow businesses to share photos and anecdotes that would be overlooked on the company
website. Fans love to see what goes on behind closed doors at their favorite companies. Facebook allows
businesses to humanize their brand. Your customers get to connect with real people from that business or
brand.
Facebook creates an opportunity to not only influence your fans and customers, but also connect with other
businesses in your area or industry. Whether you’re a small or larger company, having an active role in your
community is a great way to earn a positive reputation. Supporting other businesses in your industry will
also increase your brand awareness. If you share updates and create mutually beneficial partnerships with
other businesses on Facebook, they will most likely share your information in return. This unique value
proposition opens your social reach up to new audiences which wouldn’t be possible without a Facebook
business page.
Many of us have a fear of using Facebook, perhaps this fear stems from a fear of 'being too vulnerable' or 'too
visible' to the rest of the world. It may be that Facebook is just not the 'thing' for you and you'd rather spend
your time doing something else. The best way to face any fears you might have for using social media is to
crack out of your comfort zone, and learn as much information as you can to help make future decisions about
social media. Find people who you trust, and who can teach you the pros and cons for using social media.
The next step is to take action and experience social media for yourself.
Information is power. Social media is nothing to be feared, it’s a way to
connect and engage other businesses or customers at every level of the
sales process.
Once you’ve taken a few steps outside your comfort zone, you’ll start to
see how valuable Social Media is to the world of business.
