The East Shore Facilities Committee, the Board, the Auction Committee and the staff are proposing an update to East Shore technology. There are three parts to the proposal. Depending on the amount of money raised, we can do one, two, or all three parts. We need three new work stations for the office. The Director of Religious Education’s has been replaced, but the Minister, the Director of Finance and Operations, and the Membership Director all need replacements for their outdated equipment. Estimated cost is $3,000. We need a new telephone system. The current system is old technology, quite complex, and no longer meets our needs. Three systems are under consideration. Estimated cost is $4,200. The website needs an upgrade. We rely on the East Shore website as our primary communication tool. It includes the calendar, Board minutes, RE news and the BEACON. The site has become technically obsolete and is difficult to maintain. The Endowment Committee has generously given a grant of $3,000 to cover the first steps of the redesign. Additional money to proceed with the improvements is needed. Estimated cost is $3,000. The ten highest bidders will have henna professionally done to the design of your choosing. While you are socializing, enjoy homemade decadent cakes and other delightful desserts. Wash that down with a variety of delicious, hot or cold non-alcoholic beverages. If you are unfamiliar with henna: Henna is a plant-based dye that has been used to adorn women's bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age. Henna stains are orange soon after application, but darken to a reddish brown which lasts for about two weeks. Soles and palms have the thickest layer of skin and so take up the most dye, and take it to the greatest depth, so that hands and feet will have the darkest and most long-lasting stains. Henna was used for cosmetic purposes in the Roman Empire and Ancient Egypt, a s well a s across northern Africa, through the Arabian Peninsula and the Near East to South Asia. Today, bridal henna nights remain an important tradition in many of these areas: Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and Zoroastrians all celebrated marriages by adorning the bride, and often the groom, with henna. Many holidays from these various religious traditions were celebrated with henna including Purim, Eid, Diwali, Karva Chauth, Passover, Nowruz, Mawlid, and most saints' days. And now the Unitarians take up the tradition!
