It is also carrying out preservation and archiving of classical music of the sub-continent. It is a not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. Tehzeeb aims at bringing the finesse of fine arts and classical music to the society. It also aims at the revival of the aesthetic culture in the shape of peace and harmony. We believe in promoting art and the artiste at the same time. In order to achieve our goal: • We hold annual festivals, music recitals and literary gatherings wherein eminent artists/writers of India, Pakistan, UK, Germany, France and rest of the world are invited to participate. • We give annual Tehzeeb Awards for excellence in the fields of literature, fine arts and classical and folk music of the subcontinent. Awards are decided by a committee comprising of senior writers, intellectuals and subject specialists. • We produce music and other publications in the shape of audio CDs, DVDs and books. • We provide financial assitance to senior artists who are in their twilight years. We also provide guidence / capacity building to younger upcoming artists. Purpose of these activities is to establish a case for culture in Pakistan. It is also intented to provide a forum to creative minds to show case their art and talent. We help them in getting due exposure to a national and international audience and readership. Our festivals / recitals are attended by music lovers and connoiseurs whose number has been ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand people as per the nature of the event. Our programmes are professionally recorded to reach a much wider audience in and outside Pakistan. Our programmes are aired on different channels including Hum TV, PTV World, Dawn News, Geo and other networks. We collaborate with like-minded organizations including British Council, Alliance Francaise, Goethe Institute, APMC Lahore, NAPA, PNCA and others. Tehzeeb team comprises of people from diverse fields committed to the 4 cause of culture. Sharif Awan and Malahat Awan have been instrumental in organizing prestigious conferences and music festivals all over Pakistan for the past many years. Based on our experience of working with different organization as their founders / executive members we are mindfull of the impediments. We are very clear that culture is a very serious business. We can only reclaim our glorious past by carrying forword the tradition to become mainstream of the future.We have the patronage of legendary personalities of Urdu literature such as Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi, Zehra Nigah, and others. Our EC has representation from education, industry, business and professional sectors. All of them have one thing in common: their commitment to the cause! Our team also includes younger volunteers. " #$ %& % 5 Tehzeeb Begins - 2008 Tehzeeb Foundation commenced its activities much before its official incorporation in the year 2008. A number of musicians were invited from time to time for presenting and recording their music. The recordings were professionally edited, mixed and mastered by the end of the year 2008. Some of the muscians recorded are, Ustad Mubarik Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan Gawaliar Gharana, Ustad Raza Ali Khan (India), Ustad Fateh Ali Khan Patiala Gharana, Ustad Bashir Khan, Ustad Allah Rakha Sarangi nawaz, Ustad Zafar Ali Khan, Asad Qizilbash, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan / Hameed Ali Khan, Ustad Naseeruddin Saami, Kamal Sabri (India), Ustad Abdul Sattar Tari Khan (USA), Ghulam Ali, Javed Bashir & Akbar Ali, Nafees Ahmed Khan, Shaukat Manzoor, Gulzar Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan Khan and others. A portion of the music recorded in the above recitals has already been published. Tehzeeb archives were setup to preserve the music and other sounds (includings spoken word) on the basis of personal collections and indigenous sources as well as world sources. Its is expanding day-by-day. To promote book culture, a number of books by senior and junior writers were procured and donated to various libraries in remote areas of Pakistan and even outside Pakistan. Publications of new books was also planned. '0 + " +!$ " ! 4 ( ! / 5! $-; 21 2008-2014 Tehzeeb Festival 2010 - 5 December 2010, Arts Council Auditorium, Karachi 22 Tehzeeb Awards Tehzeeb Award for Classical Music of the subcontinent was given to Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhutt for his services towards the classical arts of the subcontinent. Remaining awards were announced to be given in the subsequent year. 23 Other Activities in 2010 Tabla Solo Recital By Ustad Altaf Hussain (Tafoo Khan) An evening of solo tabla recital by Ustad Altaf Hussain (Tafoo) was held on 27th April 2010 at NAPA. He gave a breathtaking performance in the presence of a spellbound crowd at NAPA which included music connoisseurs, practitioners, NAPA faculty members and students. Sarangi Recital & Workshop By Kamal Sabri (India) Sarangi Solo Recital by Kamal Sabri - a sarangi maestro from Delhi was held on Saturday, 1st May 2010 at NAPA. Sabri demonstrated a profound versatility in playing the fast vanishing instrument. Classical & Sindhi Sufi Kalaam by Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Hyderabad) An informal yet memorable evening was held at Tehzeeb on 15th October 2010. It was attended by a select gathering of music lovers including Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, Federal Minister for Culture. Amongst the guests, there were a number of foreign students from diverse backgrounds who were visiting Pakistan for the first time. Social Responsibility Activities Responding to the disastrous floods throughout Pakistan, Tehzeeb Foundation acted as an interface with reputable organizations in Sindh and Punjab provinces working for the same cause. The aid was routed through Medical Aid Foundation, HUM TV Relief Services, Zohra Memoril Hospital, Shiekh Association Sindh, & other set-ups in the interiors of Sindh and Punjab. Contributions included donation of an ambulance, medicines, and other articles of immediate need including food items to the flood victims. We also participated in a Flood Relief Mela organized by the British Deputy High Commission-Karachi on 2nd October 2010 by putting up a music stall featuring Abdullah Khan Shehnai-nawaz and other musicians from the flood-stricken areas of Sindh. The idea behind the festival was to explore the possibilities of Sitar, which is otherwise, the most well-known eastern instrument in the world. Tehzeeb Foundation collaborated with the organizers Ghalib Memorial Movement New Delhi through Pakistani High Commission and sponsored the visit of eminent poet Dr. Inam ul Haq Javaid to participate in the “Mushaira” and other celebrations to represent Pakistan. Indus Raag is an ace project created to develop, archive and promote the musical tradition of the Indo-Pak subcontinent. It explores the universality of our music, its relevance and commonality among the South Asian countries including India and Pakistan. “Indus Raag” box set comprises of 12 audio CDs of original music spread over 13+ hours. "F" - -! ;" %< 61 2014 Folk & Fusion Concert Tehzeeb Foundation in collaboration with British Council held a series of music events to work with top British creative talent, collaborating with local artists and connecting arts professional from both countries. Sam Carter - a singer, guitarist, lyricist and composer from UK was invited to give a couple of concert and a music workshop at different venues in Karachi. Folk & Fusion Concerts were held at Marriott and Indus Valley School of Arts & Architecture in the last week of January. A music workshop was held in NAPA for students and faculty members. Sam’s album “The No Testament” was released in 2012, an album that saw the singer reinvent his contemporary narrative-based song writing by infusing it with shape note, gospel and work song influences. Sam has four album releases to date. Sam is a recipient of the Horizon Award for best newcomer in the 2010 BBC Folk Award. Sam Carter was joined by Sajid Hussain (Sitar-player) and Haroon Samuel (Tabla-player) for some sensational collaborative melodies. A sitar player of high caliber, Sajid was also accompanied by his talented son - Shehroze Hussain. Lahore-based Haroon Samuel - a young and promising tabla player - has already made a name for himself. Shahid and Sharif Awan. It contains articles, reportings, interviews and other materials on the maestro’s life including a collection of rare photographs. Raag Music - A Practical Guide to South Asian Music by Ustad Shahid Hamid The author is an educated classical vocalist and full time music teacher. It is the first English book written in Pakistan on practical learning of Raags and classical compositions. Khushwant Singh Ka Pakistan - by Sharif Awan Khushwant Singh has been writing on Pakistan’s history and current issues. A selection of his writings has been compiled and translated into Urdu. A second edition is being published soon. Naghma-e-Qudsi Ameer Meenai (1828-1900), apart from being one of the “asateza” in classical Urdu poetry, was also a musicologist, astrologer and a man of many talents. He wrote a detailed commentary on “Saut-ul-Mubarak” written by Waji Ali Shah (1822-1887) the last Nawab of Awadh. This highly valuable work written in Persian remains unpublished as yet. Dr. Muhammad Athar Masood, a young researcher in Persian literature was commissioned by Tehzeeb Foundation to translate the treasure into Urdu. This will be a great addition to the musical literature of India and Pakistan. All the above publications are in the final stages and will be out before end - 2014. 72 Future Projects World Music of Pakistan An anthology of the folk/ethnic music tradition of Pakistan. A series of concerts and recordings has been planned. Bandish A collection of authentic historical vocal compositions of various Gharanas has been planned for near future. Music Academy A feasibility report for a music school / academy has been prepared which provides for music education in schools and colleges. 73 Tehzeeb Foundation is working for the advancement and promotion of music, literature and fine arts in Pakistan. It is also carrying out the preservation and archiving of classical music of the subcontinent. It is a not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860.
