SolaX Hybrid Series with EPS
SolaX recently launched a second-generation hybrid energy management
system (EMS). The SolaX X-Hybrid 2 features several new features.
The addition of an Emergency Power Supply (EPS) feature means in the
event of a grid outage the EPS enables the system to continue supplying
electricity to important appliances like refrigerators, WiFi routers, and hot
water cylinders. The X-Hybrid 2 Series promises a higher degree of energy
independence than usually possible with a solar panel system alone.
SolaX Lithium Battery Storage allows users to maximise the
consumption of PV generated and has a small footprint designed for
residential applications.

Energy Conference held in
Melbourne in October
The X-Hybrid 2 inverter automatically switches between three modes
depending on battery charge state, availability of solar and electricity
demand. These modes are:
Sleep mode: If the inverter detects no electricity use for an extended
period, the EMS reverts to sleep mode, during which time it uses only
standby power consumption of 7W.
Battery winter mode: This protects the battery by controlling the amount
of current that passes through the system on cold winter days.
Battery wake up mode: If the battery loses power, it will automatically
switch into battery wake up mode, and will draw electricity from the grid to
charge the battery.
Also available from YHI are SolaX’s hybrid-ready inverters, external chargers,
lithium batteries and single phase MPPT inverter.

NEW PRODUCT NEUTON SOLAR POWER DIVERTER
YHI DEVELOPS NEUTON SOLAR POWER DIVERTER
Following recent reductions in solar buy-back rates from power providers there has been a
rise in demand to find a better use for solar energy exported back to the grid.
The Neuton Solar Power Diverter redirects surplus solar energy produced into a hot water
cylinder - from just a few watts right up to the element capacity. Consumers can enjoy
real financial benefit from installing a Neuton Solar Power Diverter by increasing the selfconsumption of PV produced by their system.
While products are available in the market the Neuton Solar Power Diverter has been
developed as a simplified product to offer functionality at an attractive price point.
Designed and built in New Zealand, the Neuton Solar Power Diverter meets NZ Electrical
Safety Standards and is available now from YHI.
INDUSTRY UPDATE ELECTRIC VEHICLES
THE EV FUTURE IS BRIGHT
OCTOBER REPORT FROM DRIVE ELECTRIC
New Zealand now has nearly 800 electric vehicles registered on NZ roads – more than double from this time
last year: Starting out as pure linear growth in 2013 and early 2014, EV registrations in New Zealand are now
getting closer to exponential in numbers, and this bodes very well for a visibly accelerated uptake across the
country.
The technology continues to improve. For example, the 2016 Nissan Leaf will have a 27% longer range than
the previous version. New models continue to come onto the market. We are seeing some of these in New
Zealand, but overseas all the major car companies now offer EV, either plug in hybrids or pure electrics. At
the Drive Electric AGM two major European car companies agreed that the future was electric. These car
companies indicated that within 2-3 years all drivetrains will be electric. We are also seeing government
demonstrate a genuine desire to engage and support electric cars.
The Ministry of Transport is convening a working group to develop a ‘NZ Inc’ package of measures to
accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles. The working group involves members from central and local
government and industry. Drive Electric will play a very active role in this dialogue.
At this stage, key issues the working group will address include:
• Joint government-business EV uptake targets – determining what is a reasonable level of uptake to
aspire towards
• Governance – establishing the best way to bring relevant public and private sector players together on
an ongoing basis to drive electric vehicle uptake
•
An NZ Inc electric vehicle package – developing a plan parties can commit to
The Ministry of Transport is working toward finalising a proposed package for consideration by Chief
Executives of working group members by the end of October 2015.

INTELLIGENT BATTERY TESTING WITH CYCLAD
Testing VRLA Battery Systems has always been a contentious talking point
amongst engineers, technicians, facilities managers and asset managers.
There are a number of methods that are used within the industry to attempt to
derive a knowledgeable result of the condition of installed batteries.
Impedance, resistive and conductance testers are most popular because
they are a method that saves time, are less labour intensive and therefore
reduce costs. These systems are best used to produce trend analysis reports
from when the battery bank is new, and all require interpretation by a
knowledgeable technician to avoid random incorrect results.
It is internationally agreed that controlled discharge of a battery is the most
informative and accurate method as it is generally done to the manufacturer’s
specification using their discharge tables in Current (AMPS) or Power (Watts).
It is with this in mind that Cyclad was developed, a very quick discharge test
that gives a percentage result meaningful to the condition of the battery. The
Cyclad tester points the way quickly and relatively inexpensively to a decision
on the next step of investigation on the integrity of the battery system.
WHY CYCLAD?
Cyclad is a microprocessor controlled (“intelligent”) load unit for testing DC battery banks with a technology called CDFA™ (Coup de Fouet Analysis*).
Using CDFA Cyclad performs a simple PASS / FAIL test on your battery bank, while still in service at the press of a button, or by remote trigger.
When ageing or damaged batteries are instantly required to supply full load, they can fail completely or their up-time (related to battery capacity) is far less
than expected.
It is possible to determine how long a battery will survive full load conditions by performing a full battery capacity test. Capacity tests are extremely risky,
as they require a full battery discharge. Combined with the time to perform the test, and then recharge the batteries after the test, this can leave the load
vulnerable. Extra measures are usually required to protect the load should a power failure occur during testing. These measures are relatively costly with
the requirement for generators, additional batteries, staffing and safety precautions. As a consequence, capacity discharge tests are not often performed.
CDFA TESTING*
CDFA is the acronym for Coup de Fouet Analysis, which is a method of observing the voltage effects on a battery that is placed under an instantaneous
load. From the simple results of the CDFA testing, it is possible to determine the heuristic condition of a battery bank and determine its potential
operational functionality under real load conditions. Once a cut-off point is reached, a battery bank will FAIL a CDFA test and consequently needs to be
serviced.
Cyclad performs a quick CDFA Test using parameters that replicate features of the instantaneous load demand placed on the battery bank. Once CDFA
test results are calculated, an investigation into a FAILED test result usually reveals faulty cells or cabling and connection problems. Appropriate and timely
action can then be taken to maintain battery bank integrity.
NOTE: CDFA Testing is done with the battery charger disconnected (automatic or manual).
Cyclad can be integrated into other hardware systems, any external device can be configured to activate the testing process. Cyclad will report the results
on the LCD and trigger appropriate output relays.
CDFA Testing also has a unique identification ID (count) and a record of the results is stored within the Cyclad Log.
Your YHI Power Sales Representative has more information on the Cyclad Load Units. We offer demonstrations of the system at our
