FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Saint Teresa of
Calcutta
Last weekend Pope
Francis announced
at the Vatican to a
crowd of well beyond
100,000 visitors the
canonization of Saint
Teresa of Calcutta.
Many of us who grew up in Catholic schools
would remember hearing of Mother
Teresa’s legacy. She was identified for her
extraordinary work in the slums of Calcutta
helping the poorest of the poor. She was a
giant of her time and pricked the conscience
of many a teenager when we were
reminded of her selflessness and service to
the “untouchables” of Calcutta. I remember
thinking Mother Teresa must have been a
big, strong woman of stature and awe.

How wrong I was when I saw someone
interview her years later. Saint Teresa was
less than 5 feet tall and was a diminutive
woman with a piercing stare. She had an
aura underpinning her faith and praxis which
enabled her to overcome enormous sexual,
political, economic, racial and religious
discrimination. One can only imagine
the challenge immediately after WWII of
establishing her work as a female Catholic
foreigner in the poorest part of India. She
never flinched.
Known universally as Mother Teresa of
Calcutta, she was an Albanian-Indian
Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She
was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo
Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire. She received
the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother
Teresa held the audience of powerful
political and social leaders throughout her
life. She was always one to challenge. Her
quotes resonated throughout the World and
will so through time.
If you judge people, you have no time to love
them.
There are no great things, only small things
with great love. Happy are those.
Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever
come to you without leaving happier.
2016 Marian Lecture
This week we welcome Sr Madeline Duckett
rsm to deliver the Marian Lecture. Her
topic is Mercy – the Gift, the Possibility and
the Challenge in a Universe Becoming. Join
us in the Marian Theatre at 7.30pm for a
thought-provoking evening. (Details page 4)
Mercy Education visits
In the next week the Mercy Education Board
will be meeting here at Catholic College
Bendigo. The Board Members will attend
the Mercy Day and be part of our 140-Year
celebration. On Thursday, I will be meeting
the Board to outline the College’s strategic
direction and masterplan. Proposals will
be presented for the development at both
sites, and an outline of the College’s future
visual identity recommendation. Members
of the Mercy Education Board and Mercy
Education Limited recently toured the school
and attended the popular Frayne Speech
Festival. The support of the Board and the
Mercy community throughout the change of
governance has been outstanding.
Frayne Speech Festival
The Frayne Speech Festival was a great
success. There were fourteen Mercy
schools across Australia who attended the
event. The students thoroughly enjoyed
themselves and the competition was fierce.
There were some outstanding individual
and team efforts. Our Voice Choir finished
a worthy second and our Debaters and
Public Speakers were all very competitive. St
Brigid’s WA and St Aloysius Melbourne were
the stand out schools. The real winner on
the day was Mercy Education and the values
that Catherine McAuley upheld. Thank you
to Eugene Lynch from Mercy Education for
his support of our staff who organised and
facilitated a very successful event.
PST Interviews
Thank you to all of the families who
attended the Parent Student Teacher
(PST) interview evenings. It is great to see
families taking the opportunity to discuss
their student/s academic and pastoral
progress.
State Champions
In the past two weeks the College has
been represented in a number of finals,
both regional and state. A huge amount
of commitment from students and staff
goes in to making it to the finals – try outs,
training, travelling and then competing at
local, regional and finally state level. We
thank our parents for supporting their

distances to support the teams.
We particularly congratulate the Year
7 Netball Team who won the School
Sport Victoria Finals to become the State
Champions for 2016. The Year 8 Netball
Team were also State Finalists, placing third
in the state overall.
Well done the following teams who have
competed in the past fortnight – you can
read full reports in the Sports News (pages
13 - 16).
• Years 7 and 8 Netball teams in both the
Victorian Schools Netball Finals and the
School Sport Victoria Finals.
• Trapshooting Team placed second
overall in the State
• Three of our four Basketball Teams
won the Sandhurst Division and have
progressed to the Loddon Mallee
Regional Finals.
• Our Junior Table Tennis Teams competed
in the Sandhurst Division with our Year
8 Girls placing first overall.
Staying focused
Please remember as near the end of term
that this can be a time when the change
of season and various finals can create a
distraction from studies. For senior students
this is a critical time, so please keep a
balance and seek feedback and support.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK

ACROSS OUR COLLEGE
LA VALLA NEWS
the school day. Students should be wearing their school shoes to school
and changing into their boots once they arrive.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Over recent weeks, I have had a number of complaints from a range
of sources about the poor behaviour of some of our students whilst
waiting for buses or travelling to and from school on their bus. I have
addressed this with all students and have emailed parents to ensure
that all students are aware of their responsibilities to themselves
and others when travelling to and from school. Ultimately, if students
cannot guarantee their behaviour whilst travelling on a bus, they will be
removed.
BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS ON BUSES
This week we held Parent/Student/Teacher
Interviews, giving parents the important
opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers
and ensuring that they are informed about their
child’s learning. If you found it difficult to attend, I
encourage you to make time to meet with staff in
the near future.
CONGRATULATIONS
STUDENT INPUT
In recent weeks, I have met with a number of student groups at La
Valla to discuss issues that relate directly to students. This has been a
rewarding experience and I will continue to work with these groups to
ensure that all students have a voice within their school. Issues that
have been discussed include, sporting facilities – particularly a need
for basketball rings, garden improvements, limiting rubbish in the yard
and continuing to maintain high levels of respect, care and support
among all students and staff. As a result of a meeting with the La Valla
House Leaders we will be installing a number of new basketball rings
over the September holidays. I have been incredibly impressed with
the articulate and perceptive students that I have met during these
meetings.
In closing, I would like to congratulate all students who have
participated in a range of sporting, academic and creative pursuits of
late. I am always amazed by the talents within each and every one of
our students. Good luck to all those students participating in winter
sporting finals over the next couple of weekends.

COOLOCK NEWS
MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
This Friday, 9 September the Musician of the Year
is being held in the Marian Theatre at 7.00pm.
Eighteen of our most outstanding music students
will be performing in the competition in the hope
of being named the 2016 Musician of the Year.
We wish the students all the very best for their
performances. Families are most welcome to
attend the Musician of the Year.
I must congratulate our La Valla Leaders and Heads of House for the
organisation of the lunchtime netball competition. It has been incredible
to watch the students umpire, organise and play in this activity. This
follows structured lunch activities in science, physical education and
the library. The students really enjoy these activities at lunch time and
I thank staff for the extra time it takes to provide these valuable and
engaging activities.
MERCY DAY
Next Friday we celebrate Mercy Day. This is one of the few
opportunities for our community to gather as a whole College and
celebrate our foundation. Students always impress with their efforts to
dress up and I look forward to seeing the colour and outfits that appear.
YEAR 9 OUTWARD BOUND
Our Year 9 students have settled incredibly well back into the routine of
school after the Production. Congratulations to them all. In the final two
weeks of term, our Year 9 students have been preparing for Outward
Bound. All groups have been finalized and they now meet regularly
with their group leaders to ensure that all students are comfortable
and ready for their next adventure. Students are allowed to bring their
hiking boots to school until the end of term and wear them throughout
PARENT STUDENT TEACHER (PST) INTERVIEWS
This week we conducted our second round of interviews - thank you to
the families who took the opportunity to speak with teachers about the
progress of your children. Families are reminded that the reports are
available online for viewing at any time.
END OF TERM
Next Friday we look forward to finishing the term with our annual Mercy
Day celebrations. Students are encouraged to dress in their house
colour. There are many different activities and food stalls available on
the day. Proceeds of this event go to support the work of Mercy Works.
Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm next Friday 16 September.
YEAR 12 HOLIDAY STUDY
During the first week of the holidays many of the Year 12 classes will
be running practice sessions and extra study opportunities. I really
encourage students to prioritise these opportunities to ensure that they
are going to be prepared in the best possible way for their final weeks
of study and their exams. My thanks to the teachers who are giving up
part of their holidays to supervise these sessions and correct the work
submitted.
UNIFORM TERM 4
The changeover from winter uniform to summer uniform will be
during the first two weeks of Term 4. During this time, students have
the option of wearing either their summer or winter uniform. At the
beginning of the third week, Monday 17 October, all students will be
required to wear their summer uniform. A reminder that students need
to wear the College hat with their summer uniform.
MR MICHAEL CHALKLEY, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – DIRECTOR OF COOLOCK &
MAJOR PROJECTS
Year 12 Practice Exams
and September revision
program
Students undertaking Unit 4 subjects have all
been emailed a number of weeks ago a timetable
for revision classes which will be held in the first
week of the September holiday period. We greatly
appreciate the time that our teachers give up during this holiday period
to support student’s revision program in the lead up to the end of year
exams. We hope that all Year 12 students and Year 11’s undertaking a
unit 4 study will make full use of these revision sessions.
On our return to classes in Term 4 some arrangements will vary to
assist students in their revision for exams. The first significant change is
that Year 12 VCE students will be required to remain at school until 3.30
on Friday afternoons on the first two Friday’s of Term 4. Students will
be provided with options of participating in either Maths help, English
revision sessions or practice exams within other subject areas.
A practice exam process is also in place during the first three weeks
of Term 4. Students will be able to undertake practice exam sessions
within a range of subject areas of their choice if they have a study
period after lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays. These exam
sessions will be supervised by staff and will extend through to 5.15 pm
if required, which will enable students to complete a full Year 12 exam
matching the time allocated for that subject area for the end of year
VCAA exams.
A full overview of the expectations associated with the after lunch
practice exam program has been emailed to all students and parents.
This planning seeks to provide effective revision and practice to best
prepare students for the end of Year VCAA exams.

AMSSA Student Conference Mother Teresa
On September 24-28, the
Australasian Mercy Secondary
Schools Association (AMSSA)
Student Conference will be held in
Sydney. Two of our year 11 students,
Yohannes Basha (JR12) and Laura
Owins (CH12), have been selected
to attend this conference where they
will engage in an uplifting program
for young people to grow and deepen
their understanding of Mercy in our
contemporary world. The theme for
2016 is In the Year of Mercy; “Building
Bridges of Mercy”. We wish Yohannes
and Laura well on this wonderful
experience and look forward to hearing about their
time at the conference upon their return.
Caritas Just Leadership Day
On Thursday
18 August,
seventeen
Years 7 and 8
students (one
from each
Housegroup)
attended the
Just Leadership
Day held by
Caritas.
It was a fabulous day with
students looking at a range of social
justice issues. Students explored
these through a variety of platforms
and then together as a College looked
at how we could better develop
awareness in our own Communities.
All schools were represented in
the Dioceses and all the students
participated with great enthusiasm and mingled
excellently together.

Mother Teresa has been made a saint of the Roman
Catholic Church, 19 years after her death.
The ceremony to proclaim Mother Teresa, who is
recognised globally for her work with poor people in
the slums of Kolkata in India, drew 100,000 pilgrims
from around the world to St Peter’s Square in Vatican
City.
Mother Teresa’s work is often described as ‘eloquent
witness to God’s closeness to the poorest of the poor’,
and Pope Francis emphasised this in his address to
the intent crowds.
The verses below reportedly were written on the
wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta,
India, and are widely attributed to her.
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and selfcentred. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior
motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends
and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be
honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy
overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good
anyway.
Mercy Day
Mercy Day is fast approaching, and
will be celebrated on the last day of
term (Friday 16 September). It is a
very significant day this year as it not
only recognises the Sisters of Mercy
contribution to education in the Sandhurst diocese,
but also acknowledges the 140th year of Mercy
Education in Bendigo during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
The day will commence with a liturgy run by our
student leadership team, followed by a performance
that aims to highlight our Mercy heritage and
tradition, alongside the six Mercy Values.
Following the liturgy and performance the students
are provided with a ‘carnival’ atmosphere, whereby
they are encouraged to participate in numerous
activities and events targeted at all year levels. ’Rock
in the Quad’ will also not disappoint, as it provides
a time for students to relax and enjoy the talents of
others on display.
Food stalls and mission marts will also be in
abundance, as each Head of House is working
tirelessly with their House Captain to organise a day
that will appeal to all.
All proceeds raised from the day will be forwarded
on to Mercy Works, an organisation that supports
long term development projects in Australia and the
South-East Asia Pacific Region.
Students are encouraged to dress up in their house
colours to set the scene for a fun and eventful day!
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give
your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was
never between you and them anyway.
Amen.

in secondary and tertiary teaching,
adult formation in Mercy Ethos,
and a range of experience in the
area of adult spirituality. Currently
she works as a spiritual director
and retreat facilitator around Australia and overseas.
Her writings include: Secret Places, Sacred Paths,
on prayer and environment; The Mystical Heart of
Catherine McAuley, reflections on aspects of the

Mercy Works Wristbands
FAITH & MISSION
Funds raised throughout Term Three will be redirected
to Mercy Works, where they are then used to benefit
some of the most challenged people in Australia and
the South-East Asia Pacific region. However, this is
not the only we at Catholic College Bendigo support
Mercy Works as we are actively part of the ‘Break the
Chain’ initiative; a Mercy International Association
initiative to sell wristbands with all proceeds going
towards the work of Sisters of Mercy and the United
Nations in the fight to stop human trafficking.
A simple way to show
your support for this
important cause is to
purchase a wristband
for $4 each or 3 for $10
from Student Services at
La Valla or Coolock.
Mercy Works
This year has been declared an Extraordinary Jubilee
Year of Mercy, and at Mercy Works this means
their work with some of the most challenged
communities across Papua New Guinea, TimorLeste and Australia is more important than ever.
With limited resources and many challenges, they
use determination, imagination and plain hard work
to achieve extraordinary results.
They seek to empower communities, helping them
to make informed decisions about their future and
to play a driving role in determining the support they
receive.
Term Three has seen our fundraising efforts shift
from the St Vincent De Paul Appeal to Mercy Works,
specifically the support of Indigenous projects in the
Northern Territory and Refugee support Nationwide.
Indigenous Projects
Despite our country’s many advantages and
continued high rankings in Human Development
reports, many indigenous communities continue to
face significant disadvantages, especially in health,
education, housing and employment.
Bathurst Island
A nutrition program has been implemented once
a week to give parents and care givers a chance to
develop some skills around preparing and sharing
nutritious meals. The program also promotes
reading as a family activity as well as structured
play to help children develop social skills.
CATHOLIC COLLEGE BENDIGO LIVE THE GOOD NEWS | EDITION 14 | 8 SEPTEMBER 2016 | Page 5 Alice Springs
A program has been initiated to help preschool
indigenous children at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Catholic. Mercy Works are supporting better staff
to student ratios at the centre and helping provide
resources and facilities to assist the children as they
move into mainstream education.
Refugee Support
Despite the small numbers of refugees in our
country, those attempting to build new lives here
need support.
Mercy Connect
Mercy Connect is a volunteer program, launched in
2008, that recruits, trains and supports volunteers
to assist school students and their families settle in
Australia.
The Mamre Project
The Mamre Project works with refugee women
and their families in the outer Western Sydney and
Blacktown areas to develop their capability to grow
fresh food, improve language skills and enhance
their employability.
Mercy House of Welcome
Mercy House of Welcome is a place for asylum
seekers to come together and receive support from
trained workers and volunteers. They help asylum
seekers in learn English, offer budget counselling
and provide non-perishable foods at no cost to help
their limited funds go further.

LEARNING & TEACHING
Frayne Speech Festival
Catholic College Bendigo hosted more than 200
guests from fourteen Mercy Colleges at the 21st
Annual Speech Festival on Friday, 16 August. Our
principal has made mention of this in his piece,
but I would like to recognise: the participation and
distance travelled by our guests; the commitment
and enthusiasm of all participants; the hard work
of our team coaches; the skill and guidance of
our adjudicators; the leadership of our student helpers on the day; and
the power of work by our College planning committee in preparing and
implementing a highly successful day. Well done!
Parent Student Teacher Interviews
Thanks to the many parents and students who attended our recent
Parent Student Teacher Interviews at Coolock. Your commitment
and support of your children’s learning is significant. As you know,
all interviews are now held in the Marian Gymnasium at Coolock. We
have made this decision to enable families to meet with teachers of
students at Coolock and La Valla in the same location. We welcome your
feedback regarding our interviews and any suggestion that you might
have regarding how we could improve this process. Please forward this
feedback to Mrs Carmel Smith via email csmith@ccb.vic.edu.au or call
Carmel at La Valla on 5449 3466.

I was recently asked to review
a book for Communication
Matters, a Sandhurst CEO
publication for Schools in the
Diocese. Beautiful Failures by
Lucy Clark is not only relevant
for educators but parents as
it highlights once again the
importance of a collaborative
approach to a child’s education. Please find below
the review and I hope we see you at Parent/Teacher/
Student interviews this week!
BEAUTIFUL FAILURES by Lucy Clark
Lucy Clark, a senior editor at Guardian Australia,
wrote this book as a result of her daughter who
struggled everyday through her high school years.
It is an investigation into the meaning of ‘success’
in secondary schools and the pressure imposed on
students by numerous sources.
It is no secret that mental health problems
experienced by teenagers are becoming endemic,
particularly those suffering from anxiety. Lucy
examines and challenges the definition of ‘success’ in
educational terms, questioning how we educate and
the purpose of what would seem a spiral of increasing
pressure for our students. The pressure to perform
and get that elusive ATAR is having a long term
adverse effect on the mental health of our youth and
achieving what?
This fascinating read is a sobering reality check
on patterns of parenting and the anxiety that
competition can create. She examines the very
essence of competition through a plethora of reliable
sources and concludes that our obsession with
keeping score actually restricts one’s ability to work in
true collaboration and undermines innovation. Clark
talks about ‘Big Picture’ schools such as Templestowe
College and its achievements in embracing true
personalized learning by throwing away the rule book
on competition.
Other topics within the current educational structure
that are examined are the crucial role of the
compassionate teacher and the increasing challenges
that teachers are battling to reflect their values and
that all important empathy in the classroom; the
myth that school mirrors an adult work place; the
importance on focusing on what is right with our
students rather than what is wrong through the
benefits of positive education.
This unique insight from a parent who battled with
a system that failed to recognize her daughter as
a whole person and a society that measures how
it values a student by one number that they get at
the end of thirteen years of schooling. Personally,
my own children coped with the rigours that a
mainstream, competitive education offers, however,
looking at how this same educative process was so
damaging to another family was an absorbing, eyeopening read.

DANCE
On Wednesday 31 August, the two dance troupes
from the Grease production travelled to Shepparton
to attend a dance workshop with other performers
from the Sandhurst diocese. We developed our skills
and learnt choreography for Michael Jackson’s The
Man in the Mirror. We then performed this dance at
Sandhurst’s Arts on Show as well as a medley of our
Grease dances. We gathered with other several other
primary and secondary schools for this event. This
was a great experience as we enjoyed being involved
and meeting other people from across the diocese.

Stage Door Performers
After attending a performing arts camp in Harrietville
at the end of Term Two, four of Catholic College
Bendigo’s talented performers spent three days in
Shepparton for the Sandhurst Arts on Show held
on Wednesday 31 August. These three days were a
culmination of their work from the camp, as each day
these students, along with other performers from
the diocese, presented pieces of Drama, Dance and
Song from the musical Pippin to audiences of primary
and secondary students, parents and dignitaries from
across the Sandhurst Diocese.

Media Studies Wrap: Roll Camera!
Year 10 Visual Communication
Design
VCE MEDIA Unit 2 students spent Tuesday 30 August on a Film and
Television experience at La Trobe University and Family Feud. The focus
of the excursion was to cover the Learning Outcome ‘Media Industry
Production’ and gain firsthand knowledge about Australian Media
Organisations. La Trobe hosted students on a tour of the Bundoora
Campus, and a practical workshop in a Film Studio setting.
White Ribbon Day is an international campaign and calls for men across
Australia to speak out against violence against women. The Year 10
Visual Communication Design students entered designs for the White
Ribbon Day T-shirt Competition for the Bendigo area, which is open to
students at secondary and tertiary education levels. There were roughly
seventy entries and two designs were selected from Catholic College
Bendigo - Benjamin Wilkinson (VT11, pictured left) and Jonah Nichols
(BK10, right). Well done boys, amazing effort.
The practical experience was to make a simulated news broadcast and
required them do all the production roles of a traditional News Feature.
This included, news anchor, sports anchor, weather reporter, camera
operator, and technical roles such as director, producer, sound engineer
and operating the teleprompter.
Following this, students went to NEP Studios in Southbank to take part
in the taping of three Family Feud episodes. The filming was vital to
allow students to see what they had experienced a La Trobe happening
in a real-life situation. Students were able to speak with members of
the production team about how they got into the field. Students are
keen to see these episodes air on 13, 14 and 16 October and discover
the difference between what was filmed and what makes 'the cut’.
Below are some of the students' responses to the day.
MR PETER HUGHES, MEDIA TEACHER
"It was an incredible experience, so much fun."
"I was so excited to be in the audience to watch Family Feud being
filmed – go Grant Denyer you legend!"
"I enjoyed learning about the courses offered at La Trobe University, I
was really interested in the Sports Journalism."
"One of the best excursions I’ve been on."
"It was great to get firsthand experience in a real live studio."
"I loved using the equipment and learning how to produce the News."
"The Family Feud warm up guy was really funny."
"Thanks to Mr Peter Hughes for organising the experience."
Chef's Hat
The Chef’s Hat award from two weeks ago goes to Megan Wardell
(MK7) and Austin Boyd (MK7) who worked well as a team to produce
a crispy chicken Caesar salad and lemon meringue pie, scoring 9.5/10.
They coordinated the timing well to have both courses ready ahead of
time. Well done.

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA: STATE FINALS
Huge congratulations to our Year 7 Netball team for being State
Champions in 2016! What a privilege it has been to have coached,
watched and admired this wonderful team! The girls were amazing
sports, always encouraging, humble in victory and quietly determined to
be the best they could be. Their versatility, resilience and courage mixed
with their amazing skill level and mature play was a delight to witness.
Each girl, when given their chance to shine stepped up and played a vital
role in our team. Each and every one of you should be proud of yourself
and your team mates. Thanks for always putting in 100% and being
an awesome team to coach. Thanks also to our ‘groupies’, our families
for trekking around the countryside to cheer us on, pick up our tops,
score, find the missing balls, re-fill drinks, offering plenty of laughs and
support. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

Year 8 Netball Finalists
The second game was a lot closer against Melbourne Girls College,
again with a tight first quarter. Thankfully we pulled it together and took
the win, 17 to 13.
We played Catholic College Wodonga in our last pool match. After yet
another slow start, we pulled back from 5 goals down to win by 2.
We were up against last year’s winners Wonthaggi Secondary College
in the semi-final. This was our hardest game all day. Unfortunately, we
lost, missing out on a place in the grand final.
Overall, we all had a good day and played our hardest. Thanks to Mrs
Kingsley and all the girls for a great year of netball.

Today was the culmination of three months of competition. The girls
have trained hard, played great netball and have been outstanding
ambassadors of our College throughout the entire season. Their
sportsmanship has always been of the highest standard. Every player
made a significant contribution to the success of the team. I have been
very privileged to take this very talented and dedicated group of girls to
state finals in two separate competitions. Congratulations girls.

On Monday 5 September, the Year 7 & Year 8 netball teams left
Bendigo at 5.45am to go to the School Sport Victoria State Finals at
the Waverley Netball Centre. We were to play games of four 7-minute
quarters. Our very first game was played against Trinity College Colac
and we won 21-15 in a great team effort. Next we played Melbourne
Girls College and with swift passing and amazing defence we won 2811. We were getting a little tired with the length of games and warm
conditions but we went on to beat Galen Catholic College, Wangaratta
30-6, a game highlighted by accurate shooting and open play
throughout the court. We were excited, as having three wins meant we
finished on top of our pool of four teams and we looked forward to the
Semi-finals, knowing that we were in the top four of the state.
In the Semi-final we played Williamstown High School. They were a
strong team, but with perseverance and a ‘never say die’ attitude we
chipped away and were able to get on top of them, winning 22-17.
We were now in the State Grand Final, and playing Trinity College
Colac (again). In the first half it was very close, but once we found our
confidence across the court and believed we could do it, we went on
to win convincingly 32-14, giving us the privilege of being State Year
7 Champions for 2016. We were all very tired, but so excited with our
win and our efforts. We would like to thank our coach Mrs Frawley for
helping us to improve and for a great netball season.

the Waverley Netball Centre in Melbourne on Monday 5 September.
From over 400 teams that played in the qualifying tournaments, we had
made it to the last 8.
Our first game was against St Brigid’s College, Horsham. After a tight
start, we were only one goal ahead at the quarter time. We let our
nerves settle and converted our turnovers, winning 26 to 13.

JUNIOR FINALS
Year 7 Netball
On Friday 26 August our Year 7 Girls Netball team participated in the
2016 Netball Victoria Schools Championships Junior Finals Day at the
State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville. As a Year 7 team we were
excited but also a little interested seeing how we would go playing
against mainly Year 8 teams in the Junior Section.
The first game was against Sacred Heart College, Yarrawonga, and after
a slow, nervous start the end result was a draw (8-8). The second game
we won 16-5 against Carey Baptist Grammar. The third game wasn’t
our best game, losing 12-2 to a physically stronger MacKillop College
Werribee. Fourth game was another 8-8 draw against Padua College
Mornington. Our fifth game against Geelong Grammar was a much
better game, winning 9-3. After a short rest we came out firing in our
sixth game against Alkira Secondary College winning 19-5. Our second
last game was against Trinity College Colac which was a tough, close
game, eventually winning 6-4. Our last game against Braemar College
was a ‘must win’ to keep our chances of making Semi-finals alive. We
went on to win 10-7 but missed the Semi’s by 2 points (half a game!)
An amazing team effort saw the girls just miss being in the top four
junior teams in Victoria, but filled us with enthusiasm for next year

On Friday 26 August, our team headed to Melbourne to compete at the
Netball Victoria Schools Championships Finals.
Our first game was against the mighty St Francis Xavier College
which we lost by 9-7. Determined to win against St Pauls Anglican
Grammar School, we came out on top with a creditable score of 13-2.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to continue our winning streak as we
narrowly lost our next two games.
Excited for a win against Clonard College, we won 9-4. A tight game
was played against Rowville Secondary College with us losing 4-7. We
were able to get back into fifth position winning by 7 goals in each of
our two next games. Unfortunately, we ended the day with a loss of
Matisse Appleby JR12, Sarah Appleby JR7, Connor Mulquiny MY8, Patrick
Hansford JR6 and Jordan Roberts VT7
Our Catholic College Bendigo trapshooters had a great day at the Clay
Target Shooting state finals competition on Monday 5 September at
Woodvale. Our team of five placed second for the day, which was an
outstanding effort.
Sarah Appleby also competed in the Senior Girls Competition and
was in a shoot off for third place in the senior girls event. She did not
win, however her achievement in getting this far was still fantastic.
The students had fun day and represented the College with pride.
Congratulations to all involved.

held at the Bendigo stadium.
The Year 7 boys day began with a great win against Weeroona, and
this gave them confidence going forward and really set them up for the
day. Further wins eventuated against Girton and East Loddon, as well
as Castlemaine. This then placed the boys at the top of their Pool, and
gave them a place in the Grand Final.
The first game was an enjoyable game to play, winning against
Weeroona College 38 to 1. It was a great start to the day and our good
form followed through to our next game against Castlemaine where we
won 45 to 8. Our following game we convincingly defeated East Loddon
with the score being 45 to 0.
The Grand final was against Crusoe College. The match was tough
early, but then the boys began to work together as a team and played
some really good basketball enabling them to take the win 25 – 10. It
was a super result. Congratulations to all involved. Special thanks to Mr
Jontee Brown who gave up his time and coached the boys.
Year 7 Girls Basketball
The Year 7 girls team competed in 3 pool games and one final. The first
round we had a convincing win, defeating Weeroona College 58 - 7.
In our next game we played Castlemaine, we had good defence which
helped us get the win 42- 3. Our last pool game was against Girton. We
started off strong, which helped us get the lead to beat them 44 - 4.
We had then qualified for the grand final against Marist College. This
was a hard fought game, however we were able to work well together
as a team for the whole match and won 23 - 5.
Overall we had a very fun day and came home victorious. Thanks to
Miss Haring for being our coach.
YEAR 8 GIRLS: Back Row L-R: Mrs Rachel Winfield (Coach), Brianna Harris JR3,
Ruby Turner CH4, Bridget Turner CH3, Georgia Smith CH4

YEAR 8 BOYS: Back Row L-R: Brodie Hartland BK3, Mason Wakefield CH3, Aiden
Young BK3, Campbell Rowland CH4, Cooper Smith JR4
Front Row L-R: Jyanni Pollard-Carroll MK3, Samuel Conforti BK4, Benjamin Collins

The Year 8 boys enjoyed great success in their three pool matches
defeating Weeroona College, Girton Grammar School and East Loddon
College. This enabled them to qualify for the Final which was to be
played against Bendigo South East. It was a really hard fought match
with both sides having periods of dominance. In the end, Bendigo South
East College took control of the match and went on to win 14 – 17. It
was a great game, and although the end result was a loss, it was still a
great day for everyone. Thanks to Mr Driscoll for coaching.
The fourth game we played was against Girton. As there were no
semi-finals, the teams on the top of each pool would play off in the
grand final, so we had to win to finish top. In the end we won 33 to 18,
however the first half of that game was very close, with the scores
being level at half time.
In the grand final we played an exciting game against BSE. We won, 25
to 8. That made us Division Champions and qualified us for the Loddon
Mallee finals to be played in Bendigo early in Term 4 - can’t wait! Great
effort girls.
