HolyFamilyParish, Fort Madison St. Joseph Parish, Montrose FEBRUARY 21, 2016 / S ECOND SUNDAY OF LENT . SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR OF MERCY PARISH RETREAT The parish is having its 2nd Light Of The World Retreat this weekend at McAleer Hall. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will touch the hearts of the retreatants that they might more fully open their hearts to Christ. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross are the most indulgenced devotion in the Church. They focus on the suffering and death of Jesus. During Lent they are at Sacred Heart at 5:30 p.m. CATHOLIC MESSENGER With every issue of The Catholic Messenger, its staff strives to provide meaningful, must-read coverage in a readerfriendly format – print or E-edition. The Catholic Messenger also is the communication tool that Bishop Martin Amos uses to reach thousands of households. It is the least expensive investment in adult faith formation and education. It is an aid in spiritual formation and evangelization. And it costs just $29 per year for 50 issues in print and/or E-edition. This is the same rate as last year. Subscribe now through your parish. ALL NIGHT ADORATION On March 4 - 5th, Holy Family will be having 24 hour Eucharistic Adoration starting after the 8:00 a.m. First Friday Mass and continuing through the day and night until the 8:00 a.m. First Saturday Mass. During this Adoration time the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered as much as possible. REMINDER Whenever parishioners miss Mass because of inclement weather parishioners are asked to mail in their weekly contribution or double up the following week. Bad weather or not, the bills must be paid. THANK YOU! Due to the generosity of Holy Family parishioners $1,033 was raised for the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Thank you! Additional contributions can be sent to: Sacred Heart Cathedral; 422 E. 10th Street; Davenport, IA; 52803-5499. . Mary and Joseph Church was commended in July, 1865 and it was dedicated and blessed on Nov. 9, 1865 having cost $10,000. Known as the “Kreutz Erhohung Schule” (Exaltation of the Holy Cross School) it was named in honor of the feast day (Sept. 14th) on which the first School Sisters of Notre Dame arrived in Ft. Madison from Milwaukee in 1860. Every morning from 1865 until St. Mary’s Church across the street was opened in 1871, the school children attended morning Mass at St. Joseph’s Church and then marched the seven blocks to attend school here. The photo shows the school as it appeared shortly before demolition in April, 1899. The building to the left is the second convent, built about 1888. MOMENTS OF MERCY As Catholics we take up the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving every year. These practices help us to remember the merciful love and compassion that God shows all people. Participating in these practices, we journey toward repentance with our community and God and toward the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord. We do not make this journey alone. The whole Church prepares for the celebration and together, along with those who are preparing to enter the Church at the Easter Vigil, we try to live more faithfully to God's call to be merciful, loving, and compassionate to those around us. Our acts of love through sacrifice and prayer are a tangible witness of God's love to those around us. 1. Spend some time in reflection about why you choose to participate in the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving of the Church during this Lenten season. Next time someone asks you why you aren't eating the chicken on Friday in the lunchroom, you'll be better prepared to share your belief in God who is merciful and compassionate. 2. Share with someone what your Lenten practices will be this year. This is not to brag about how good you are at following Christ, rather, it allows us to each have something of an "accountability partner" so that we can strive to be a more credible witness to our faith. ~usccb.org . Pictured to the right is Nick Stuecker of Houghton. CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY VISIT THE SICK Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them. . Give blood. Spend time volunteering at a nursing home – Get creative and make use of your talents (e.g. sing, read, paint, call Bingo, etc.)! Take time on a Saturday to stop and visit with an elderly neighbor. Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members on a one-time or periodic basis. Give caregivers time off from their care giving responsibilities so they can rest, complete personal chores, or enjoy a relaxing break. Next time you make a meal that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and give it to a family in your parish who has a sick loved one. ~usccb.org February 21, 2016 CRUSADER’S CORNER The Holy Trinity Catholic Kindergarten Informational Meeting will be Monday, February 29th at 6:30 p.m. at HTC Elementary in West Point (413 Ave. C, please enter through the 4th Street door.) SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren't sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference. Lend a listening ear to those going through a tough time. Make a home cooked meal for a friend who is facing a difficult time. Write a letter or send a card to someone who is suffering. A few moments of your day may make a lifetime of difference to someone who is going through a difficult time. ~usccb.org CATHOLIC RADIO The Board of KDME Catholic Radio in Fort Madison continues to work to raise funds to establish a Catholic Radio station in West Point. This new station would broadcast to the surrounding areas of Houghton, St. Paul, Donnellson and Denmark. So far, $7,000, about 28%, has been raised of the $25,000 needed. Catholic radio is a wonderful way to lead those who have fallen away from the Church to think about coming back, and reinforces the faithful. We thank all those who have donated so far and ask everyone to prayerfully consider a donation to this worthy cause. Please call Joe Peitz, 470-8702, with donations or questions.
