Meagan Fowler
Wins the Bruce
County Public
Speaking
Finals!
The pizza is still travelling, folks.
Having recently won our Lakeshore
Regional Public Speaking Competition in the
junior division, Meagan Fowler travelled to
Ripley to compete in the Bruce County
Public Speaking finals. Though the students
from all 5 regions did a wonderful job,
Meagan's talk on the digestive system rose
to the top of the heap. Way to go Meagan!
She will now speak in front of Bruce County
Council in the council chambers in
Walkerton.

STUDENT DRESS CODE
The warm weather has begun! We ask
that parents support and encourage the
following guidelines for student dress:
Hats and caps are to be removed indoors.
Inappropriate T-shirts or sweatshirts are not to be
worn to school. Examples would include shirts that
advertise alcoholic beverages, promote illicit drug
use, support violence or violent acts, suggest sexual
activity, or display inappropriate language.
Shorts may be worn to school during warm
weather. However, what is appropriate for the
beach is not necessarily appropriate for school.
Shorts and skirts should be no shorter than the ends
of finger tips when hands are held straight at one’s
side. “Spandex” (e.g. bicycle shorts), torn jeans, or
jean cut-offs (e.g. jeans shorts with frayed hems)
are not to be worn.
Midriff-baring or low-cut tops, halter tops,
spaghetti strap tops, and muscle shirts are not
appropriate for school wear. Again, what is worn at
our beach may not be acceptable school wear.
Undergarments should not be visible. Tops must
meet or cover the top of the pants or skirt.
We realize that our students are fashion-conscious,
but warmth should be considered during our cooler
(and sometimes rainy) spring months. Jackets and
rain apparel (e.g. boots) should be worn as
necessary.
Indoor shoes/slippers and outdoor shoes are
necessary.
Gr. 5 Trip to Roots of Bruce
The grade 5
classes went to
the Roots of
Bruce in
Walkerton on
Tuesday April
th
7 . There were
five groups
seeing and
doing different
activities.
The group I was in was "hot pink" and we learned
about poultry, bee's wax, crops, fruits and vegetables,
woodlands, plus information from Hydro One about
electric shock prevention.

As part of the crop presentation, we got
to go in a combine. I really enjoyed learning about
bee's wax candles and poultry. The group I was in
got to name a chicken and we named her
"Kentucky".
Hillary Kempers 5A
The Roots of Bruce was amazing. PESCS
saw lambs, cows, chickens, and alpaca. From my
point of view, it was a good chance to learn
where our food comes from and how hard
farmers work so we can eat!
Shiann Booth 5A
On Tuesday, April 7th, 5A, 5B and 4/5T
went to Walkerton for the Roots of Bruce. It
was cool to see cows, pigs, llamas, alpacas, and
chickens. To learn about seeds, crops, and how
to handle beehives was pretty amazing. When you
see combines working in the field they look pretty
small, but up close they look like giant monsters.
We would love to go back there because it was
fun.
Liam Nicoll and Tyler Donaldson 5A
"Thank you very much to our volunteers for going with
us to the Roots of Bruce. They were Mrs. Ashton, Mrs.
Fawthrop, Mrs. Cassista, Mrs. King, Ms. Wignall, Mrs.
Malcolm, and Mr. Surridge."

View Bald Eagles on Live Cameras!
Channel 5B Moldy Oldy news anchors,
Brendon Morano and Meagan Fowler, take
us on an adventure through the civilization of
the Ancient Incas. With their band of roving
reporters and their state-of-the-art satellite
time-travel technology, the Grade 5s tap into
many interesting aspects of Inca culture.
Come climb the mountains of Ancient Peru
with us on May 13th and 14th.

1:00 K to 4
2:30 5 to 8
Parents are welcome at all broadcasts.
Check this out! If you would like to view
nesting Bald Eagles in British Columbia, go to
www.hancockwildlifechannel.org,
then click on Live Cameras. The organization has
rigged cameras in three locations to provide live feed
on the website. Two locations, Sidney, B.C. and
Hornby Island, B.C. have recently had successful
hatchings of eaglets. The third site, unfortunately,
resulted in eggs that would not hatch. However, one of
the eagles continues to come back to check the nest.
Some of the students have watched each week while
visiting the library and are fascinated with the eaglets’
progress. Bald eagles, while not endangered in
Canada, were nearly at the brink of extinction in the
United States. Fortunately, banning DDT and
preserving its habitats have resulted in the Bald Eagle
being removed from the endangered list in 2007 in the
United States. There is a great deal of information on
this website, but watching the eagles raise their young
in such a close up manner is remarkable! This is great
"reality" TV!

Grade 8 Trip Updates…
By now, you have hopefully filled out and returned
the package that was sent home mid-April. If you
have not yet returned the forms and/or made your
final payment, please do so as soon as possible.
At this time, we would like to let you know that we
are fortunate to have found some terrific
chaperones to accompany us on our trip. We
would like to thank Doug Archer, Dan McArthur,
and Kevin Daneluk for generously offering their
time to assist us and we are sure that they will
have a great time. As mentioned in the last letter,
the students will have their final planning and
information meeting during school hours the first
week of June. Should you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to contact any of the
supervising staff.
Just a few weeks to go!

EARTH DAY
During the week of Earth Day, PESCS students
celebrated Mother Earth in different ways.
The week began with a great kick off GREEN
assembly organized by the Green Team. Students
demonstrated, through presentations, ways to
reduce our carbon footprint and shared many
important messages with their fellow classmates and
the staff. The Green Team does a fabulous job of
embracing environmental initiatives at PESCS and
eagerly operates our composting program. Thank
you PESCS Green Team!
Wednesday was Earth Day and PESCS Wildcats
showed their school spirit by wearing "earthy"
colours of blue, brown, yellow, and green!
Throughout the week, many classes participated in a
Neighbourhood Litter Pick-up. Students were
shocked and saddened by the amount of litter that
continues to be left around our environment and
they want to do their part to clean it up. Our
students know the importance of "Reuse the Past,
Recycle the Present, Save the Future!"
Your Family Reading Magazine program is
returning this fall. Do not renew with the
publishers over the next few months. You can
order on-line at www.QSP.ca all year long and
support our school
