Dear Parents,
On Thursday evening, October 22 our Annual Public Speaking Evening was held in the school hall.
Twenty five students from Years 5 and 6 presented convincing speeches on the topic “Education Can
Happen Outside the Classroom Too!”.
Congratulations to all participants and I would like to encourage all students to continue to develop
their public speaking skills! Thank you also to the teachers and family members who assisted the
students with their excellent presentations!
Thank you to our wonderful parent community for acknowledging our staff last Friday, “World
Teachers’ Day”! You made everyone feel very special and the teachers were appreciative of the
positive messages regarding their work with your children.
Next week we begin our “2016 Foundation Transition Program”. This is a four week program and will
be held every Friday from 2pm until 3:25pm. The 2016 Year 6 students are eagerly awaiting the
arrival of the new students and they are looking forward to helping them settle into Donburn Primary
School! A wonderful learning opportunity for all involved!

There were so many wonderful examples and opinions such as: “ We all have achieved or will
achieve to walk, talk, play a sport and later drive without the use of a classroom” and “we can
learn maths in the kitchen while baking a cake as we use our measuring skills. The shops are
also a good example as we need to know how much items cost and what the change is.”
When all the speeches were delivered, the judges Mr. Smale, Mrs. Page and Mr. Sertori had
some time to decide. It was a very tough decision for them.

The current committee are unable to continue in 2016 and therefore need
volunteers to take over the Secretary, Treasurer and Uniforms positions.
Secretary is responsible for liaising with the school basketball competition co-coordinator and team
managers, registering new teams, preparing newsletter notices, and organising presentation night at
the end of the year along with the treasurer and uniforms person.
Treasurer
counts all money taken, balances team kitty money at end of seasons and distributes
kitties at the start of seasons. There are two seasons per year.
Uniforms arranges tops and shorts for new players and ensures there is a stock of sizes available.

Mrs Hookey’s Year 6 children decided it was time to weed the garden bed behind the
Grade 5 portables. We all tackled the garden, with different tools and brute power!
Lapathon - Every year the children ask for sponsors to encourage (pay) them to do laps of the oval.
They come together in their House colours, by year level and make their way around the school oval in any way
they can, running, jumping , skipping, dancing etc. to some music.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 2016
After all of the hard work, the weeds were gone and everyone could breathe a sigh of relief.
Hi to everyone, for those new to the school my name is Vitina Bakker and I am the canteen
manager.
We are very lucky at Donburn to have such a fantastic canteen with such wonderful low
prices. We can only offer this service thanks to the contribution of so many beautiful
volunteers, but like all years we have a large number of current volunteers not returning next
year due to their children moving on to high school, or people returning to work.
It’s this time of the year that I start to plan for next year and start to look for the volunteers we need to keep the
canteen running.
For those who don’t know I will explain how canteen works; Canteen runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and
I am there every day.
On Mondays and Wednesdays 2 volunteers are required and on Fridays 4 volunteers are needed.
Volunteer times are flexible.
For example, people can come in for the whole day, or from 09:30am to 12:00pm or 12:30pm to 03:00pm.
We are very flexible and understand that people are busy, but trust that a few hours a month is not too much to ask.
With the help of volunteers we are able to keep our prices low and the children get to enjoy delicious food from a wide
variety compared to a lot of schools which only have a limited menu.
There are many benefits to volunteering. You get to meet other parents in the school, you get to enjoy a free lunch,
cold drink or coffee and tea, and our children will love seeing you in canteen. It’s always a special day for the kids
when they see their mum/dad at the canteen window. Please consider helping and being part of the school community,
the children really love the canteen but the school depends on your volunteer help to run it.
If you have any questions please ring me on 0434 140 739 or you can come and see me in canteen on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays.
You can fill in the canteen roster reply slip and hand it in to Marg or Chris at the
office, and I will contact you A.S.A.P.

We then worked out the approximate number
of weeds we had cleared. This included
counting the buckets of weeds and weighing
3 buckets full of weeds to find out the
average weight. But then we took away 300g
which is what the empty bucket weighed.
Weight of buckets = 0.3kg
Weight with weeds = 1.57kg (averaged)
1.57kg - 0.3kg = 1.27kg
Total amount of weeds cleared:
1.27 x 78(number of buckets) = 99.06kg.

ZIP LINING
This term, all Year 1 students participated in a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)
every Monday afternoon for 5 weeks. PMP is a sequential program with a series
of gymnastics type activities. To ensure that the program ran effectively, we had the assistance of
some wonderful parents who attended each week and positively encouraged the children to
attempt all the activities. Thank you to all the parents who assisted, the children and teachers all
appreciate your help.
I really enjoy P.M.P because I get to go through the
Tunnel Course and it is really fun. I also like that you can
go through it and over it. I can’t stop thinking about
P.M.P because it is so much fun.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
On Wednesday, it
was the blue group’s
turn to do the zip
lining. Everyone
was very excited.
The zip line was 18
m high and 120 m
long and you go at
40 km per hour.
When it was our turn
we stepped off the
platform, you could
go down the zip line forwards, backwards,
like superman, spinning but you couldn’t
go upside-down.
The zip line was sooooooo much fun and
we were very lucky that we got to have 5
goes each. Going down the zip you kind of
feel like you are flying. When
you are on the zip line you see
the end of the it , the rest of
the camp site and the trees
under you. It was so much fun
and I wish I could go on the
zip line all over again.
On the third day our group did environmental studies in the
awesome inside outside. The inside outside room was
basically a room inside that looked like it was outside. It
had fake trees, fake grass, and even fake gravel. The best
part about environmental studies was definitely getting to
hold the red bellied python fluffy. It was very cold and it
felt silky smooth. It was also very interesting hearing
peoples stories about animals. There were also other
animals such as a turtle and a water
dragon.
Overall, everybody had a wonderful
time and had lots of fun. Kaleb and I
really enjoyed it and we recommend
it. It is a safe and beautiful camp.

I really enjoy P.M.P because the mums are great
helpers. I always have a turn of all the activities. We
do fun activities like basketball skills, skipping, hula
hoops, crawling through shapes and balancing on
boards. I get stronger, fitter and faster during
P.M.P. My favourite activity was the basketball skills
because it gives me lots of energy.

We go to the gym to do P.M.P. We work
in small groups with parents. I really like
being the leader of my group. I have
improved my skipping. It makes you run
faster and jump higher. Sometimes I
get dizzy when I am in the spinning
thing. I really like P.M.P.

I like walking inside the flat ladder
and flicking a bean bag with a plank of
wood using my foot. I love using a hula
hoop and I also like bowling the
skittles down. My favourite thing is
skipping with the long rope. After
every P.M.P. lesson I feel tired but I
still like P.M.P. a lot.

ARCHERY AND BUSH ART
I really enjoy P.M.P because I really like
going on the Space Hopper because it
helps me to get fit. My second favourite
activity was the Launch Board because it
is good for your legs. I love P.M.P and I’ll
be sad when it’s over.

I really enjoy P.M.P because we do lots of fun activities like
hula hoops, bowling, skipping, spinning top, walking ladder and
so much more. My favourite one is the balancing boards. I
always get a turn at every activity and the Mums that help
are great too.

Our favourite activity was Archery and Bush Art. Archery was easy and lots of fun at
the same time. Mikayla’s highest score was 30 points and my highest score was 55
points. Mikayla and I also choose Archery for our second chance activity. In Bush
Art, I made the hardest friendship bracelet and Mikayla coloured in a really cool
possum. We also did dot paintings. All together it was amazing. All the others kids
were kind and enjoyed Woorabinda too. We wish we could do it again so we are
going to put our names down for Somers camp next year.

HUT BUILDING
Woorabinda was awesome! Our
favourite activity was the bush hut
building. We were really relived that
both our huts survived the shake test
but disappointed that neither of ours
survived the waterproof test. WE
GOT DRENCHED!! When we started
we had to find lots of sticks and small
logs to build our hut. Most of us took down an old bush hut
and rebuilt it on the same terrain. All huts got drenched but
Joe’s hut failed, half of his hut was missing and bits were
falling off everywhere!! All of the huts failed the waterproof test but we were okay with that cause it was a really
hot day. The teachers got their payback by pouring water
from Lake Narracan all over the huts. It wasn’t comfy but it
was cramped and everyone couldn’t wait till they got wet.
We had a great time at Woorabinda and we hope we do at
Weekaway.

HIGH ROPES COURSE
Our favourite part of Woorabinda
camp was the high ropes course. It
was quite high, about 8 metres high.
We started off kind of nervous but
halfway through it was fun. There was
different sections. The Hug-a-buoys
were annoying. The best part of the
high ropes were the surfboards. They
felt like you were surfing in
real life!
Overall Woorabinda was really
fun and the best camp for Joe
and I.

CANOEING
Woorabinda was extremely awesome and amazing! We had many highlights, but if we had to choose one it would definitely have to be
canoeing. It is so cool being out on the water and feeling the current against the boat. We had to be in the boat with partners meaning we
had to show great team work.
We spotted about 20 water dragons on the rocks at Lake Narracan. We stopped
outside the water ski club to have a picnic! It was a great experience! We were
away for 5 days and even though we had the time of our lives, it was great to be
back home to see our family again! We recommend Woorabinda to any one that
likes adventure!

On Friday October 30th the Foundation students participated in a wonderful
excursion to Tunstall Square. During our visit to Tunstall Square the
Foundation students were required to purchase food items for a shared lunch
and an item of their choice from the ‘$2 Shop’. The children thoroughly enjoyed
the opportunity to apply their learning in a real life situation and build on their
understanding of the value of money. Thank you to all the parents who assisted
on the day.

MAPPING
Woorabinda was amazing. One of the awesome
activities was mapping. In mapping we used a map
to guide us to these little tags with letters on it. The
letters are paired with a number on the map. When
you find all the tags, the numbers and letters will
help us reveal a secret message in our book. There
was 4 levels of tags. Blue and orange tags were easy
to find. Yellow and mauve tags were hard to find.
One of the secret messages was Woorabinda is a
great place to be. It was a wonderful time at
Woorabinda!!!

NIGHT ACTIVITIES
Unlike other camps, Woorabinda had night
activities! We did an exhausting night hike,
had a groovy dance night and much more!
On the night hike we went up this steep hill that got everybody tired
before the hike started! During that night, we got to a big hill and
sat down to learn about the history of Woorabinda It was very
interesting but it was hot and we had to sit on itchy grass. It was so
itchy that nearly everybody got hay fever! At the amazing dance
night we did old style dances and had massive dance battle and the
girls won! After the tiring dance battle we played
an awesome game and Jaimie and I won the game!
During our experience at Woorabinda we made
new friends and had the time of our lives!

ASSEMBLY
Everyday in the morning after breakfast we had an assembly in the Rec
Hall. At the start we sang the Woorabinda song.. Then we shared previous day reflections from the children. Then the Power Rangers came
and checked the girls’ dorms and the boys’ dorms for the lights to be
off, windows open and taps not dripping. Girls vs boys. Then the
weather people (a.k.a. 2 children) told us the weather for that day.

The Quest
On the last day of camp,
all the groups were
challenged when they had
to do THE QUEST! The
groups had to find what
‘Grandma’s Secret
Recipe’ was. The groups
were split into 3 mini-groups with different jobs. Jack was the
Commander, Michael was the Chief and Kelly (From another
school) was the Admiral. Zach and I were ‘Early Settlers’
which meant that we had to unlock a lock to get some of the
ingredients, which included matches to start a fire. We had to
start two fires instead of one because one had to boil water
for the tea (Grandma’s Secret Recipe) and the other was for
making our really nice stew which was our lunch. The other
mini-groups were out finding the ingredients for our team.
Kelly and the Marines were canoeing in Lake Narracan.
Michael and the Hunters and Gatherers were out doing
archery and getting other ingredients and maps. Michael and
the Hunters and Gatherers got to the hut before Kelly and the
Marines. When all the groups finished making the tea, Kerry
(Teacher at Woorabinda) told us our ‘Magic Word’ and it
was ‘Strong’. Then about an hour later after eating our
delicious stew we were told which group was the winner.
Unfortunately, Green Group lost and the winners were...
Blue group!
I recommend other schools to go to Woorabinda.

It was a vibrant meeting with lots of good ideas being discussed. Currently, committee members have
undertaken different areas to research and give feed back about when we meet next.
Next Friday November 6 each class will share a morning tea of fresh fruit to celebrate healthy
lifestyles. As well, at Assembly there will be a presentation of prizes from the Manningham
City Council, proud sponsors of Walktober, to our best and most dedicated walkers.
Our next meeting is Friday November 20th at 8:15 am.
