You could call it an “art investment”. chanuciot range from £49 to £375. The company’s most popular designs include the illume, £159, a graceful chanuciah made from sparkling nambe alloy, as well as the weighty but elegant cast iron, £165. “These are perfect for those requiring something minimal and stylish to suit the backdrop of their modern homes,” Danya says. Vividly adorned items include a hand-painted chanuciah in the shape of a pomegranate tree by Yair Emanuel, priced at £55. another arboreal chanuciah, the Tree with Birds, by israeli artist Shraga Landesman, comes in aluminium at £135 or brass at £255. contemporary Judaica also has products that appeal to children, such as a puzzle that turns from a dreidel into a chanuciah, at £95. “We don’t buy in bulk, we source pieces directly from the artists, mainly in israel and also america,” Danya adds. Michal Meron, another leading israeli artist, has produced a series of stunning illustrated interpretations of the weekly Torah portion, as well as a complete, full-colour Torah scroll combining all the sidrot. Meron, who has studios in Jaffa and at the world’s oldest ghetto in Venthis is ice, has also made not just a contemporary-style illustrations of religious synagogues around objeCt, the world, psalms, this is art ketubot and the festivals — including a chanucah illustration showing the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and the festival in Venice. her works, newly available in the uK, are limited-edition signed prints, available through London company Judaica with Style, starting at upwards of £100. also available through Judaica with Style are the works of Jerusalem-based v continued on page cH2 ch2 chanucah gift guide thejc.com the JeWiSh chROnicLe 30 november 2012 Light entertainment Judaica takes many shapes Jolly round the trolley Rainbow cone chanuciah, Contemporary Judaica, £165 See how they shine C continued from page cH1 artists Avner and Avia Agayof. using anodised aluminium in a range of colours, their chanuciot are a far cry from the traditional nine-branched format. They have produced travelling chanuciot with a miniature jug that comes apart to reveal nine candle holders and a colourful belt that doubles as shabbat candle holders. Particularly dramatic is their Miracle and Wonders candelabra which, when lit, gives the impression of nine candles suspended in mid air. This is priced at £145, while the belt menorah is £79 . For those who want to explore the mysteries of the Talmud, a new edition has been produced by Jerusalem publisher Koren. The result of Koren’s collaboration with Rabbi Adin steinsaltz, the set makes talmudic study much more accessible. This Talmud comes in 41 volumes, at £29.99 per volume, but unlike usual editions it is much more than just black on white. The pages are enhanced by full-colour illustrations, bringing to life specific textual references. The cream-coloured paper is easy on the eye, while the texts (including the Rashi commentary) are punctuated to facilitate pronunciation and comprehension. There is also an english text set alongside the hebrew and Aramaic. Margin notes contain backgrounds to the personalities of the Talmud and its history. Today, however, Chanucah gifts for the youngsters have been transformed. Rather than chocolate coins, today’s techno-savvy kids — from toddlers to teens — are calling on their parents for iPad games or robotic pets. Gina Argyron, toy department manager at Fenwicks, has noticed the change. “We always had a demand for technological toys from older children, but today the younger ones, including pre-school kids, are into it too.” Although traditional items such as Cabbage Patch Kids remain popular, she says, they have been overtaken. The most popular at Fenwick is the Furby, an interactive furry creature that speaks “Furbish” and english and reacts to conversation and touch. Priced at £60, it is suitable for children aged six and upwards — adults too. Among other best sellers at Fenwick is Twister Dance (£27), which comes with music and stereo speakers (suitable for age eight plus) and Innopad 2 (£85), a hand-held electronic game for children aged four and over. For the more warlike among your offspring, the store has nerf n Strike (£45) which fires foam “bullets” (designed for the eights and over) and Web-Shooting Spiderman which has a model of the comic book character which shoots out a web (good for age five and over). For pre-schoolers there is Leap Pad 2 (£90), a hand-held device with a camera and educational games and Wedgits (£15), a construction toy for age three Wooden igloo set, £4, Tiger Furby, £60 from Fenwick plus which contains plastic shapes and puzzles. At John Lewis, elaine hooper, the toys and books buyer, has compiled a top toy guide including classics such as Lego and traditional wooden toys as well as new gadgets and techno must-haves. “We know the impact technologybased toys are having on children and that will be huge again this year,” she says. however she adds that there was also a marked demand for classic toys as well. A key gift at John Lewis is the Kurio 10 tablet computer, suitable for the whole family from age four upwards. At £200, it is Wi-Fi enabled, supports Flash 11.1 and has front and rear cameras and an integrated microphone. The store has a wide range of Lego toys including the complex Camper Van which, at £79.95, is suitable for age 16 and above. One thing children truly enjoy is dressing up for the Chanucah celebrations and The Mystical Fairies Shop in hampstead is like walking into a wonderland. It a little girl’s delight, complete with a resident flying fairy. Over the past 10 years, the business has grown largely through word of mouth and and through its website (www.mysticalfairies.co.uk).
