SAMUEL FIELD Y OUR MISSION The Samuel Field Y, known as “The Everybody Place”, is a non-profit, multiservice agency with flagship sites in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, and 33 additional sites throughout the community that provides a diverse array of programs and services to over 35,000 people. Since our inception over 60 years ago, the Samuel Field Y has been dedicated to the core element of our mission – enhancing the quality of individual, family and communal life through service to people of all ages, ability levels, stages of life and backgrounds. INSURANCE The Samuel Field Y participates in the JCC Group Accident Medical Program, which provides excess accident medical coverage for members injured in a Y sponsored activity. REGISTRATION & MISSED CLASSES For dates and times of classes, please contact the Director of the Department. Participants who miss classes will not be reimbursed and there are no make-ups. CLOSINGS If the buildings have to be closed or classes cancelled due to inclement weather, listen to WCBS 880 AM. When last-minute decisions based on changing weather conditions are necessary, information will be available by phone. Parents of children in afternoon classes/programs are urged to call the Y periodically for changes, cancellations and early closings. The Y cannot guarantee that classes that are cancelled due to weather will be made up. Refunds cannot be issued. TEXTCASTER The Samuel Field Y has implemented a text/email based notification system. Supervision is available only at program locations during program hours. Parents will be responsible for notifying appropriate staff of a child’s absence, late arrival, early or late pick up and any special circumstances related to arrivals or departures. Director, Senior Center 5 Our Early Childhood Services are designed for children from ages two through five and their families, and includes, Nursery, Not Quite Nursery, Childcare, Pre-K For All, and Summer Camp, as well as extended day and enrichment options. Our preschool programs are designed to offer young children an opportunity to play, explore, and engage in multi-faceted activities. Professionally trained teachers facilitate children’s growth through dynamic educational experiences. We also provide a caring atmosphere in which children develop and thrive intellectually, socially and emotionally and where families feel welcome. The Early Childhood Programs of the Samuel Field Y are designed to foster a love of learning and to prepare our students for the academic rigor of kindergarten and beyond. Full Day Childcare Program Sam’s Camp and Swim Club (Offered only at Little Neck) Planning your work schedule and needing childcare and an early childhood education for your child age 2-5? Our Little Neck Early Childhood Department has exceptional activities for a customized plan to address your child’s needs. This full day childcare program is staffed by licensed New York State teachers and assistant teachers, as well as aides with a commitment to both nurturing and meeting social, emotional, and learning needs of our children, and is available from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. (Offered only at Little Neck) A first encounter with the world of camping. Our children have access to four state of the art playgrounds, computer time, music education, physical education, as well as intergenerational programs and activities. The Samuel Field Y provides a safe and caring atmosphere where you can leave your child secure in the knowledge that he or she is in the best possible environment. We prepare educational experiences appropriate to the developmental level of each group in a nurturing atmosphere that considers each child’s individual needs. The program includes breakfast and two snacks. Lunch is brought from home. We do accept ACD and HRA vouchers for families. Nursery School at Samuel Field Y (Offered at Both Little Neck and Bay Terrace) The Nursery School at the Samuel Field Y is designed to meet the learning, social and emotional needs of children ages 2.9 through the Pre-Kindergarten Year, through half day, extended day, and full day options. What you might see in our classrooms: Twos - learning how plants grow, how to make the color purple, importance of sharing, & strengthening of vocabulary. This full day program is offered free of charge. The program offers a rich, supportive learning environment where children can explore, discover, talk freely, build, create and grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. The Samuel Field Y upholds its commitment to common core standards put in place by the New York Department of Education, and implemented by our staff of highly professional teachers. Classes prepare our students for kindergarten by honing their skills in reading, writing, math, and science exploration. Supplemental Programs for Pre-K For All Regardless of where your child attends Pre-K For All, a supplemental program at the Samuel Field Y is 6 available to meet the changing needs of families. Bus transportation is available from select local schools. You don’t have to attend our Pre-K program to receive the benefits of a Samuel Field Y education, including reading and writing workshops, science and math explorations, and computer enrichment! Not Quite Nursery (Offered at Both Little Neck and Bay Terrace) This program provides 2 year olds with a chance to explore an expanding world while learning independence. This 2-hour program introduces nursery school activities such as art, music, dramatic play, blocks, cooking, and more. Parent or caregiver remains in the class and separates gradually as the child is ready. Not Quite Nursery includes 2 and 3 day options. Threes - Understanding concepts like hibernation, the development of a chrysalis from a caterpillar, how tall is a giant penguin, and how do we measure. Fours - Demonstrate ability to compare literature and understand stories, learn how to write and read their names, understand professions, and increase proficiency in computer skills. Nursery options include 2-day, 3-day, and 5-day programs, with extended hours available for families that work late. Parent-Child Exploration Explore and share educational activities and experiences with your child in our Parent-Child Explorations classes, for children birth-24 months and their parents. Classes are structured for children birth-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months and 18-24 months. Parents can engage with their children and other parents and children, in creative activities that include music, singing, exercise, story time, weekly themes and socializing. The Bay Terrace Center is a great place for both parents and children to make friends and learn and grow together! For children two to five years old, Sam’s Camp and Swim Club provides a nurturing educational and fun summertime environment. Our program consists of weekly themes, highlighted by special events such as performances by professional entertainers and a special lunch each month for those who attend full day programs. Outdoor and indoor play activities are designed to increase motor skills and to encourage socialization opportunities. Full day and extended day campers go to the local park and playground once a week for sports. All campers swim at the Tanenbaum Family Pool across the street daily, and are supervised by certified lifeguards. At the Samuel Field Y we understand the special needs of our nursery age children and have designed a choice of program schedules, allowing you to choose the schedule best suited for your child. Parents can choose either two, three, or five full days from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, extended days from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, or mornings from 9:00 am to noon. Full day, extended day and morning campers all swim daily. To get your children safely to camp, doorto-door transportation is provided via our own mini-vans for an additional charge. Little Meadows Inclusion Program at SFY Through our collaboration with Little Meadows Early Childhood Center, the Samuel Field Y is able to provide an inclusive Early Childhood program with integrated classrooms. Staff consists of dually certified Early Childhood/Special Education teachers and assistant teachers who are certified by the New York State Department of Education, who have extensive experience in the field of early childhood. These classrooms pair children from the community with other children who receive services such as: special education, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and/or counseling. The classes are also provided with a consulting psychologist and a social worker who visit regularly, and who at request, provide any support a family may need to assist all children in reaching their optimal potential. If you have concerns regarding your childs’ development, Little Meadows offers comprehensive evaluation services by highly qualified and experienced professionals in early childhood development. Evaluations may also be performed by bilingual Spanish professionals. Evaluations are provided at no direct cost to parents. Evaluations are paid for by the State of New York and New York City. For more information or to register for this program, please contact Shari Rebhun at (718) 423-6111. 7 After School Day Care at the Samuel Field Y Our after-school staff consists of professional and paraprofessional group leaders who are carefully selected for their commitment, skills and ability to relate to children with a caring, positive attitude. Through the use of project based learning, children are given the space to grow and develop important interpersonal skills, while learning social responsibilities and values in a supportive group environment. Transportation is currently provided from the following schools, but is subject to change depending on enrollment. For additional annual fees, families can make use of our extended hours until 6:30PM as well as transportation to Hebrew School at many local synagogues. The after-school program also accepts ACD & HRA vouchers. Each holiday trip includes childcare, transportation to and from the trip, admission to activities and a snack. Past trips have included the Queens Zoo, local Amusement Parks, Queens Hall of Science, Bowling, Movies, and much, much, more! Teen Council The Beacon Programs are school-based Community Centers, funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. The Samuel Field Y Beacon child care programs operate during after school hours, summer vacation and on weekends and holidays, providing a wide range of services and activities for children and their families. Beacon After School Care Programs include Basketball, Tae Kwon Do, Individual and Family Counseling, Vocational and School to Work programs, Dance, Drama, Chess, Computer, Homework Club, Academic Tutorials, Youth Councils, Tennis, Video Production and Adult Programs such as Computers, Stress Reduction, Parent Support Groups, as part of a comprehensive menu of activities for all ages and interests. Grades 9 – 12 This prestigious teen program is available to any teen in 9th through 12th grade that feels a commitment to leadership skills and community service and development. The council’s responsibilities include: coordination of Teen Lounge events, organization of community projects, committee work and other special programs such as Toys for Tots, Project Hope, canned food drives, UJA Phone-A-Thon, intergenerational activities, holiday dinners and an experiential hands-on leadership weekend. Upon completion of interview participants are hired to take part in paid and unpaid internships in various departments of the Samuel Field Y. Training hours are mandatory and completed paperwork is required. Internships are conducted in programs for typically developing children and children with special needs. These programs are sponsored by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, The J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation, and The After School Corporation. We strive to offer a customizable program where families can build a program that fits best with their schedule, and children can choose from a wide range of specialty activities so that the programming is always fresh and exciting. Activities include cooking, sports, arts & crafts projects, science and more! Themed days and opportunities for parent engagement in community events and youth showcases are also a central part of this 10 month program. Children are placed in groups consisting of 5-8 children according to age and current areas of strength and concern. NORCs NORC is short for Naturally Occurring Retirement Community, a comprehensive supportive service program for our community’s seniors. These programs serve the senior residents of the Clearview Gardens Cooperative in Whitestone, Deepdale Gardens Corporation in Little Neck, and single family homes in parts of Floral Park, Bellerose, and New Hyde Park. NORCs receive State and City funding, as well as assistance from UJA-Federation of New York, the United Hospital Fund, Parker Jewish Institute, and Visiting Nurse Services. NORC’s are designed to serve communities where a majority of residents have “aged in place,” and they serve to help residents remain in the comfort of their own homes. Individual, group and family therapy, psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring for both clinic and homebound elderly are available to help cope with psychiatric, emotional and adjustment issues. Children of the elderly and family members of Alzheimer’s patients may attend family treatment and evening support groups. Transportation (daytime only), including a wheelchair accessible van is available for a small fee, for those unable to use public transportation. A multi-agency initiative assisting families who have been adversly affected by the economic downturn. Community Mental Health Services CAPE now provides mental health services in three senior centers in Queens - Selfhelp’s Clearview Senior Center, the Central Queens Y, and JSPOA’s Friendship Center. A social worker and psychiatrist are available by appointment to see participants of the centers on site. CAPE has also been working with Selfhelp Community Services to provide psychiatric assessments and medication to Nazi Victims in Queens. The Mobile Outreach Service Team (MOST) is available as part of CAPE’s services. The interdisciplinary team of social worker, registered nurse and psychiatric nurse practitioner work to identify homebound elderly, assess and evaluate their psychosocial and health needs, and link the individual and family to the appropriate community programs. Services include ongoing supportive counseling and psychotropic medication monitoring. We also offer specialized services for Holocaust survivors, including a group at the Holocaust Center at Queensboro Community College. CAPE and MOST clients now have the availability of three peer advocates to help them with information and referral for concrete services and telephone reassurance.
