As 2015 draws to a close and we prepare for a
new year, one cannot ignore the turmoil created by
consequences. Amidst legitimate concerns regarding
the safety of our country, there is a very real danger
that we, as a nation, will forget our humanity and the
very openness that made us great by closing our gates
to immigrants and refugees.
Our country was founded—

The US is the strongest and most prosperous

Let us hope that 2016 will

Our own industry, in particular, owes its existence

We Clean
Valuable Rugs
“Never clean this rug”
was good advice when traditional rug
washing was your only option.
Revita is not traditional rug washing.
Revita revitalizes rugs, purging them
of dirt, bacteria, dust mites, allergens,
stains and odors.
No harsh chemicals. In fact, Revita
removes the toxic residue left by
previous rug cleaners and gently
strips away the brittle calcium
deposited in your rug by the well
water they used.
A revitalized rug is softer, richer
and healthier than ever before.
Utterly clean.
You’ll smile when you see and feel the
difference. Revita is a new technology
using ultra-purified water and purely
organic additives to restore the life
and vitality of area rugs, even the
most delicate, antique silk Persians
and Orientals.
Miraculously, Revita costs
about the same as traditional
rug washing. But technology is
always like that, isn’t it? Giving us
safe, affordable solutions that were
impossible only yesterday. Learn more at
revitaRUGS.com
or call us at 855-573-8482
PS
– Patching, weaving, re-dyeing and
re-fringing are performed daily by our master
conservators. Your rug is in expert hands with
Revita. And our drivers and estimators
are happy, friendly and college educated.
What a company!

CAPEL RUGS has introduced its newest collections
by popular television host and designer Genevieve
Gorder. Gorder’s unmistakable style and enthusiasm
have made her a multi-award winning talent and one
of America's favorite designers. Viewers watch her
regularly on shows like “Genevieve's Renovation,”
“Dear Genevieve” and “Design Star,” where she dispenses style and design advice that is always on-trend
and accessible. “We’ve featured several collections
from Genevieve in recent years, and they’ve always
been outstanding successes,” said Cameron Capel,
vice president of national accounts for Capel Rugs.
“This year’s collections show off her incredible scope
as a designer, ranging from mesmerizing geometrics
to eye-catching modern patterns, all of which add the
ideal charm and glamour to any space.”
EBISONS HAROUNIAN IMPORTS announced
the creation of its new division called Harounian
Modern which will specialize in designing, manufacturing, importing and distributing contemporary and
modern hand knotted and hand tufted rugs. “We have
been known as a traditional house of rugs over the
years but our diversity and recent enhanced involvement in creating rugs with modern designs necessitated the establishment of a new division that would
handle all the various aspects of this segment of our
business,” Harounian stated. “Due to this expansion
we would require larger showrooms and hence our
impending relocation to larger quarters.” For more,
visit www.ebisons.com or call (800) 966-6666.
LOLOI announced that renowned designer and
author, Justina Blakeney, is its newest license partner.
With colorful patterns and jungle-like motifs,
Blakeney uses contrasting textures throughout her
two rug collections, Folklore and Fable, to create
visual interest and textural base drawing inspiration
from the classic designs of Morocco, as well as from
bright and vivacious artwork from the 60's.
18 Winter 2016
LOLOI also announced that they have introduced a
new, more effective sample rack for its dealers, shown
above. The rack allows dealers to feature 50 square
samples and 16 color blankets in a visually arresting
presentation. The sample rack measures 96’’ x 20’’ x
92’’ with the optional color blanket arms. The Loloi
Sample Rack can be purchased through local Loloi
sales representatives or directly via email to

NOURISON and Joseph Abboud have collaborated
to create a new array of rug collections and decorative
accents. The line is updated, yet classic, and includes
an exciting selection of area rugs and home accents
woven from organic natural fibers and man-made
fibers. All products in the line feature rich textures,
tonal layers and one of kind styling, with the attention
to key detailing for which Joseph Abboud is known.
“Our design team worked closely with Joseph to create new products with subtle colors and sumptuous
textures that are a reflection of the true DNA of the
Joseph Abboud brand,” said Alex Peykar, principal at
Nourison. “These new collections are an artful combination of Joseph’s refined style, combined with a
story about layered textures and Nourison’s craftsmanship,” said Peykar.

NOTEWORTHY
The Encyclopedia of Antique Carpets (Princeton
Architectural Press, $250) is the first-ever compre-
hensive antique carpet reference guide spanning the
past twenty-five centuries and numerous countries
around the world. An internationally recognized
authority on antique carpets with over fifty years on
experience in the field, author Abraham Levi
Moheban has filled the gap in carpet literature with
this guide. The clothbound, two-volume boxed set
features over six hundred entries of historic carpets,
each with an accompanying photograph and informa-
tion about the history, location, technique, coloration,
size, and more of carpets produced around the world.
Eight newly drawn maps presented in the book illus-
trate the major weaving locations within the Rug Belt,
FEIZY and House Beautiful partnered to showcase
the magazine’s top five fall colors. In the September
Color Issue, House Beautiful unveiled this season’s
hottest hues: Persimmon, Ochre, Berry, Indigo and
Oyster. And, in a unique collaboration, Feizy worked
with the magazine’s editorial team to select rugs in a
variety of styles in each colorway to feature in the
Feizy fall 2015 catalog.
“We couldn’t be more excited and honored
to work with the wonderfully talented and respected
team at House Beautiful,” said Leah Feizy, executive
vice president of Feizy. “We want to provide a more
editorial approach to shopping our catalog, and this
partnership delivers an exceptional experience to our
customers who trust and identify with the styles,
trends and colors curated by House Beautiful.”
CAPEL RUGS has received a Gold Davey Award
for its 2015 product catalog. The annual Davey
Awards is the largest and most prestigious creative
design competition for advertising and marketing
excellence inspired by big ideas rather than huge budgets. Capel’s 2015 product catalog, a stunning 268-
page book titled Adventures in Color & Texture, went
toe-to-toe with 4,000-plus entries, rising to the top
due to its creative close-up photography and dazzling
which includes Persia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, China,
India, and Central Asia. Covering several key facto-
ries for each entry, the encyclopedia is meant to guide
the reader into the various factors that distinguish an
antique carpet’s origin and its market value priced for
its artistry. Compiled over the past five decades
through extensive research, The Encyclopedia of
Antique Carpets is the first collection of its kind for
carpet collectors, merchants, and anyone interested in
learning more about antique carpets and the cultural
heritage of one of the oldest forms of artwork. Copies

“If I can’t have a handmade rug,
I would rather not use one at all!”
As soon as you step into her beautiful Italianate 19th-
century Brooklyn Heights brownstone, you know that tradi-
tion with a playful modern twist plays an important role in
Kathryn Scott’s interior design. It’s no wonder that oriental
and decorative rugs are a key ingredient in her interiors—
an amalgam of influences ranging from the contemporary
to French antiques and Chinese art—where artistry, craftsmanship, and sustainability are paramount.
Introduced to handmade rugs by her Texas grandmoth-
er when she was 15 and coached by her mother, an avid col-
lector, the designer has always used them in her work which
takes her all over the country and further afield including to
Paris and Shanghai. “If I can’t have a handmade rug, I
would rather not use one at all!” states Ms. Scott who began
her career as an artist and is married to Gu Wenda, the
Chinese world-renowned contemporary artist. Touted for
creating “living environments,” she practices a personal
holistic approach to design emphasizing the integration of
the old with the contemporary while shying away from the
trendy and ephemeral.
Thanks to her artistic sensibilities, Ms. Scott is attract-
ed to the imperfections and the variety of patinas character-
istic of decorative rugs. “Handmade rugs have a life of their

Indeed, she creates meaningful interiors with a multiachieved with older rugs. “I hate it when interior
design is all about consumerism,” comments the
designer, a member of the Sustainable Furnishings
Council. “We should be sensitive to our environment.
Why rip out interiors every five years just to be
trendy and only to be outdated a couple of years
later? I don’t want to fall into that rut.” Instead, she
advocates working with handmade rugs and other

two separate seating areas rather than one large rug
that would have exceeded the budget or was a sever-

is the continuing thread when connecting one piece to
the next in the same or juxtaposing spaces.
In her quest to establish a sanctuary-like serene
and harmonious ambience, Ms. Scott features pat-
terns selectively and subtly. “When I use pattern, it
tends to be in the rug,” she notes. When the rug is the
room’s decorative statement, fabrics are mainly
monochromatic to heighten the impact of the rug’s

the modern and on the beauty achieved in the contrasting layering effect.

THE NEW CREDIT CARDS:

Now, businesses throughout the United States are
converting from the familiar magnetic strip cards to
the higher-tech payment standard. This newer system
relies on readable plastic rectangles—chips—embed-

known as Smart Cards, chip cards, and EMV cards

billion of that total is in the United States, even
though the U.S. accounts for only one-third of all card
transactions, globally. That large share of credit card
fraud is caused mainly by the nation’s reluctance to
switch to microchip technology, according to experts.
Thieves have been glad to skip countries with more
secure payment systems. Instead, they focus on the
easiest targets, especially the U.S. and its magnetic
card system, says Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, a New Jersey-based
association of banks and payment companies.

How Chip Cards Protect Retailers
Chip cards give every transaction its own unique
code, so that they’re providing advanced in-store
security. These EMV cards will deter thieves who use
stolen account numbers to create counterfeit cards.
Smart Cards are much more difficult to copy or coun-
terfeit. What if the card data and one-time transaction

called “skimmers.”
However, if the hackers at Home Depot or Target
had collected data from chip cards, they could not
have used that information to create fraudulent credit
cards. “Because of that unique security code for each
transaction, if payment data is stolen and reused, the
card issuer would recognize a copy of the transaction.

Switching to a new credit card technology does
carry a cost, Mr. Vanderhoof acknowledges. The cost
will vary with the retailer and the existing payment
infrastructure. “Many merchants lease or rent terminals from their payment processor. The processor
could write a new contract or addendum, and provide
the new equipment. But if a merchant’s payment system is integrated with their own in-store systems,
including point-of-sale, it could cost more and
involve other players and suppliers.”

In addition, staff members, sales receipts and call
centers also provide opportunities to let customers
know that their security and financial safety are a top
priority for your store.
During the transition to chip cards, at point-of-

insert the chip card instead of swiping the magnetic
card. Train your staff to use the chip card, and to show
customers the proper place to insert it, in order not to
slow down the payment line.”
The Smart Card Alliance suggests three steps for
converting from magnetic to microchip cards.
BEFORE the conversion: focus on training cashiers
normally would, and to follow the prompts. A chip-
instead of swiping it. If a staff member can see that
the customer has a chip on the front of the credit card,
the employee can simply tell him or her to “dip” the
card. These basic steps will help your customers pay
successfully in your store. When a customer has a
question, remind them to follow the prompts on the
terminal, especially to keep their card inserted until
prompted to remove it.

Progress of the Conversion Process
Shifting the world’s largest credit card market
from magnetic to microchip is a massive, gradual
process. Among retailers, the Smart Card Alliance
predicts that roughly 40% of payment terminals will
have been upgraded to accept chip cards by the end of
2015.
The nationwide conversion process began
slowly. By the end of 2014, approximately 1.2 billion
credit, debit and prepaid cards had been replaced by
Smart Cards. The pace became faster after major card
networks announced their October, 2015 target.
Some experts predict that it will take until the end
of 2018 before nearly all U.S. cards have been con-
verted to chip cards. So far, the transition has been led
by major banks such as Chase, Citibank and Bank of
America. These institutions have switched substantial
numbers of subscribers to Smart Cards, including all
their co-branded airline and hotel reward cards. In the
U.S., magnetic stripes are expected to remain on cred-
it cards for several years, until all merchant locations
have replaced their older terminals.
Some types of credit card fraud can still happen
after all the magnetic strips have been replaced. Smart
Cards cannot prevent fraudulent purchases made online, over the phone, or by postal mail. These types of
“card-not-present” transactions do not generate their
own secret security codes. Nor can chip card technology stop thieves from making purchases with a lost or
stolen card. Hopefully, that type of fraud will be
deterred by requiring each cardholder to enter a
Personal Identification Number (PIN) as another way
to authenticate a purchase. A PIN cannot be faked, but
a signature can.
Summary
Even though a Smart Card is not perfect, your store
will benefit from making the conversion to the chip
card. It is important to follow all the steps to complete
the transition, to improve your business security and
protect your customer.
