Happy New Year!
As we reflect on 2015 we can’t help but
think of all the things we have to be thankful
for. One of those is all of you, who make our
work possible. AIS is entering its 48th year in
business, thanks to you!
May 2016 brings many blessings to you and
your family!
We wish to thank you for supporting Native American Indian art
and culture and Americana Indian Shows. We look forward to serving
you in the New Year!
Our 2016 series of shows will start out in Riverside California. True to
form, we kept very busy over the holiday season buying new jewelry
and restocking inventory. A good number of artists came by the shop
to see us and there were a couple of buying trips to the Gallup and
Zuni areas as well.
Among some unique finds were a fantastic red coral bracelet
made by Calvin Martinez in the 1990’s which was acquired while
returning consigned Navajo rugs to Bill Malone. A lucky find! Along
with the hand stamped link concho belt we picked up in late October
we now have two pieces of work from this great Navajo artist.
Last series we also purchased an interesting three strand fetish
necklace. We knew this piece seemed special, and after doing some
research we discovered just how special; it is made up of carvings
from Andrew Emerson Quam, Lavina and Jennie Tsikewa, and
Leekya Deyuse - some of the most legendary Zuni carvers to ever
put tool to stone and shell. Be sure to get a look at this rare and
beautiful necklace!
Alton Bedonie made some beautiful medium and large size
pendants to order with lapis and turquoise and nice big bales to fit
many different styles of chains, chokers and beads. He also created
several wide turquoise bracelets to include one with a gorgeous 10ct
piece of Bisbee turquoise. We met with Nelson Begay and purchased
a very nice belt buckle and two of his bolo ties. Also acquired at this
time was a bracelet and five new sterling silver handmade chains
from Bruce Hodgins. Bruce is also building us a Lapis bolo tie
which we should have by the time we leave for this show series.
There are some fantastic new necklaces from Jack Tom and we will
be seeing Mary Tom in the coming week so by show time we’ll have
a great selection of their jewelry. Some exquisite Zuni work acquired
includes a number of beautiful knife wing dancer design pieces from
Harlan Coonsis (his signature work!), to include several necklaces,
rings and a hard to get coral belt buckle.
Additional artists whose works will be at the show include:
Carl and Irene Clark, Vernon Haskie, Charles Supplee, Phil
and Fannie Russell, Myron Panteah, Cody Sanderson, Bryant
Waatsa, Connie Seowatewa, Sunshine Reeves, Steven Arviso
(his signature “illusion” bracelets and more!), Aaron Anderson,
Gerald Lomaventema, Kee Yazzie, Ruddell and Nancy
Laconsello, Orville Tsinnie, Jake Livingston, Wilbert Manning,
Steven Begay, Fadrain Bowannie and many more.
We still have many more artists to see a in the next couple of
weeks and several more buying trips to make. The inventory is
looking very good and there will be something for everyone by show
time!
We are looking forward to seeing you all at the show!

POTTERY
We have a large and impressive collection of
pottery, including new and old pieces by several
award-winning artists as well as talented artists
who have yet to place in the highly competitive
markets. Also available will be some new pieces
from the Mata Ortiz area which are all hand crafted
and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well
as a few select Puebloan pieces.
Pottery is a great choice for your home decorating,
collecting or gift-giving. Whether you want a molded
or hand coiled piece, we have something that’s sure to
please, and fit your budget.
SCULPTURES & Kachinas
It’s winter and with the Soyal ceremony the Hopi Kachinas have
begun returning from their spirit world. As a result the carvers have
been creating many of the kachinas that are seen during this time.
Some of the encountered figures are: the Sun Kachina, Crow Mother,
Mastop, corn maidens and the animal kachinas. We will have a nice
selection of the Soyal ceremony kachinas during our sale. Raymond
Chee carved some exquisite one-piece works as well and we have
several diorama style pieces from Lawrence Dallas.
Marvin Toya from Jemez Pueblo carved a very nice horse bust
with a medicine shield and feathers using alabaster. We also have
a couple of alabaster carvings from a Navajo sculptor, and a very
nice one-piece Apache scout carving from Raymond Chee, crafted
from cedar.
SANdPAINTINGS, RUGS & ART
Navajo Rugs
We have a nice selection of Navajo rugs from the Teec
Nos Pos, Ship Rock, Farmington and Gallup areas. This large
inventory includes another beautiful Teec Nos Pos rug by Sara
George and several smaller weavings by her mother. There are
several Burnt Water weavings and a very nice Chief pattern style
weaving by multi-award winning weaver Janice Van Winkle.
Most of the weavings are small to medium in size, which make
great wall hangings or decorations for tables and furniture. We
have two exceptional round rugs, one of which took a blue ribbon
at the 2015 Gallup Ceremonial. We also have a fantastic large red
Storm pattern rug by Thelma James. Also available is one set of
gorgeous Navajo pillows by Sally Arviso which were made with
all hand-carded, homespun wool. We will be searching for several
more sets of pillows and exceptional rugs before we leave for this
show series.
Sandpaintings
Sand paintings always make a lovely gift or decoration, so
we have a large selection of Navajo sand paintings, as well as a
few sand painting boxes (which make unique gifts!). All of these
pieces are completely Navajo made to include the matting and
building the frames. Truly American-made!
