The 18th Annual Woods Hole Film Festival
Program 2009
NOTES FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 18th Woods Hole Film
Festival, the oldest film festival on Cape Cod
and the Islands. We are pleased to present
one of the finest festivals of independent
film in the Northeast. Although we have
grown and evolved over 18 years, our
mission remains the same; to showcase the
work of emerging and established filmmakers from around the world and to
highlight the work of filmmakers from New
England and Cape Cod within the festival
program. In 2009, we will screen more than 100 films selected from
submissions culled from around the world, bringing the world to your
doorstep one film at a time.
In order to produce a festival as large as Woods Hole, we work yearround to develop a program that is original in style and sensibility and
that represents the essence of the Woods Hole Film Festival.

For the best Festival experience, sample a variety of screenings, panels
and events. Get to know the filmmakers and support them by attending
their screenings. Many of them have traveled a great distance to be a part
of this community that we create for 8 days each year. As a member of
the audience, your support is crucial and the audience awards, which are
announced at the closing night party and awards ceremony, are based
on your vote. This year, we are also pleased to announce the addition of
juried awards for films that are in competition.
After the Festival, the Winter Film Series, Dinner & a Movie offers
Festival programming to audiences year-round and new this year, look for
the Best of the Woods Hole Film Festival at the Payomet Center for the
Arts in Truro. New this Fall, we will offer Films from around the World,
through the Global Lens Initiative.
In October, 2009, the Woods Hole Film Festival will host a meeting
of Cape Cod Filmmakers to launch the Cape & Islands Filmmakers
Collaborative to provide networking opportunities for filmmakers who
live in the area. Look for more information about the Collaborative on
www.woodsholefilmfestival.org in September. We are also excited to
announce a new collaboration with GlobalPost.com to facilitate
documentary works-in-progress from around the world.
We need your generous support to keep the Festival going and growing.
Please become a Festival patron and take advantage of the special offers
that apply. Finally, thank you to the many people who work to make the
Festival possible each year, and to you, our audience, for your continuing
support.
Enjoy the show!
Judy Laster
Festival Director
To our guests:
Woods Hole Film Festival volunteers are available
to answer your questions and help make your
Festival experience interesting and rewarding.
On occasion, they may not know the answer to
your question, but if they don’t they will be happy to
direct you to someone who does. We will have volunteers
on either side of the bridge who will be happy to answer
your questions about the Festival. And, if they don’t
know the answer, they will find someone who does.
Finally, if the bridge is up and you happen to be on the
wrong side, don’t worry. We have great films on either
side of the bridge. So, relax and enjoy the Festival.

The Audience Awards: You are the Judge!
When you attend a film, you
will be given a ballot for the
films that are in competition at
that screening. Please, carefully
follow the instructions on the ballot
or given by the presenter. The ballots will
be collected after each screening. Please, be sure to turn yours in.
Whatever the critics and filmmakers may think, the true test of a film’s value is the
reaction of the audience. What a critic may acclaim, an audience might find a
bore; what filmmakers may see as filmic genius, an audience may find trivial. The
Woods Hole Film Festival is proud of the intelligent and discerning audiences who
judge the films we present with open eyes, ears, hearts and minds.
The Woods Hole Film Festival was established so that the residents of Woods Hole,
Falmouth, and Cape Cod would have a venue to see the fine independent films
produced, but often not seen in traditional cinemas. Over the past decade, it has
become evident to filmmakers worldwide that the audiences at the Woods Hole
Film Festival are some of the most perceptive and open-minded they have encountered. From this relationship, we developed the Audience Awards. The world
film community values the Woods Hole Film Festival’s Audience Award, as can be
seen by the increase in quality and quantity of films being offered again this year.
Your votes are counted and assessed in relationship to the films in that category
throughout the festival. Ballots which are not filled out properly are discarded.
The votes are tabulated by averaging the ratings. The Best of the Festival is
decided for a film rated best against all films in competition in the Festival and
can be in any category.
The Audience Awards will be announced at the filmmakers awards ceremony on
the last day of the festival and will be posted on the Woods Hole Film Festival web
site on the Monday following closing night. Your vote counts and the filmmakers
are counting on you. Screenplay Competition Awards will be presented on
August 1st at the Awards Ceremony. Thank you for your participation.
The Audience Awards are given in a number of categories depending on the films
shown in a given year. This year the categories are:
•BestFilmoftheFestival
•BestFeatureNarrative
•BestShortDocumentary
•BestShortDrama
•BestFeatureDocumentary
•BestShortComedy
•BestShortAnimation
•BestFilmCapeCodSection

with Sarah Roemer and Joe Cross. He also produced and starred
in the CBS drama pilot “Waterfront,” as well as writer/director

moving documentary, “No Kidding, Me Too!” He currently resides
in Connecticut with his wife, son, three daughters, and four dogs.
She started teaching acting in the mid-70’s
with The Theatre Company of Boston /

“school busing” era. Later, and with the help of colleagues at C.P.
Casting, “The Studio” evolved and has existed for over 20 years.
The Studio currently offers on-camera acting, auditioning, and basic
acting workshops to all levels of students, taught by some of the
area’s most experienced professionals. Carolyn teaches an on-camera
auditioning course and “Getting Started in the Business of Acting”,

most remote frontier. The film unfolds in a series of native Even
songs belonging to a forgotten generation. As they sing of hunters
and herders, the Evens attempt to recreate their mythic past in a
reindeer camp at the foot of the Alney volcano. But hearth alone cannot be home. The Evens must leave their reindeer on a truly fearsome
beast.

Ice Bears of the Beaufort
DocumentaryFeature-EastCoastPremiere
Ice Bears of the Beaufort is a stunning look at arctic polar bears at
home on Alaska’s Beaufort Sea. With its subjects oblivious to the
impending loss of their arctic sanctuary, this film shows a thriving
polar bear society on the edge of survival. This non-narrated, highdefinition documentary bears witness to Alaska’s Beaufort Sea coast
as critical polar bear habitat. Five years in the making by a single
resident of an Inupiat Eskimo village, Ice Bears of the Beaufort is a
color-intense, cinematic family portrait of Alaskan polar bears never
before captured on film. The film chronicles polar bear activity and
year-round utilization of the coastal and offshore areas of the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge. This region of the Alaskan arctic is not
a blank slate. In the context of a raging world debate about how to
deal with climate change, this film shows the impact that an offshore
oilfield would have as polar bears face climate change with the receding polar ice as the greatest threat to their continued existence. The
movie’s instrumental score, Glaciation, is a powerful musical mirror
reflecting the austere arctic imagery of the film. In an unrivaled marriage of image and music, filmmaker Arthur C. Smith III collaborated
with Nashville composer/musician Patrick O’Hearn to create the fullest expression of the depth and subtlety that is the arctic - an arctic
eden... a polar bear sanctuary.

The Cove
Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
Documentary Feature
Documentary Feature
The Cove begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin trainer Ric
O’Barry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was O’Barry who captured and trained the 5
dolphins who played the title character in the international television
sensation “Flipper.” But his close relationship with those dolphins–
the very dolphins who sparked a global fascination with trained sea
mammals that continues to this day–led O’Barry to a radical change
of heart. One fateful day, a heartbroken Barry came to realize that
these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures
so beautifully adapted to life in the open ocean must never again be
held in captivity. This mission has brought him to Taiji where the
largest supplier of dolphins in the world is located. But the town
has a dark, horrifying secret that it doesn’t want the rest of the world
to know. There are guards patrolling the cove where the dolphin
capturing takes place who prevent any photography. The only way to
stop it is to expose it... and that’s exactly what the group of activists
in THE COVE intends to do. Armed with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, the members of the small group, led by the most
famous dolphin trainer in the world, devise a covert plan to infiltrate
the cove to document the horrifying events that happen there. Along
the way, they uncover what may be the largest health crisis facing our
planet–the poisoning of our seas. Part environmental documentary,
part horror film, part spy thriller, THE COVE is as suspenseful as it is
enlightening. The final result is a heart-wrenching, but inspirational
story that shows the true power of film in the hands of people who
aren’t afraid to risk everything for a vital cause.

January 1968; a year that would be saturated in violence and historical change. Tucked away in a gray prison cafeteria in Northern
California, isolated from the tumult outside, hard men doing hard
time witnessed the making of a legendary album that would catapult
a country singer to international stardom. Johnny Cash at Folsom
Prison remains one of the greatest live albums ever made, and the
man himself one of America’s greatest troubadours and advocates for
prison reform. Forty years later, the album still resonates today with
a rawness and authenticity that few recordings have ever achieved.
This film will expose a lesser known “Man in Black” through an exciting, visually compelling examination of this historic concert.

The English Surgeon
SHOOTING BEAUTY tells the unforgettable story of aspiring fashion
photographer, Courtney Bent, whose career takes a life changing
turn when she discovers true beauty in a truly unexpected place: at a
center for people living with significant disabilities. When she begins
inventing cameras her new friends can use, a surprising story unfolds
that initial reviewers are calling “more than a film… a masterpiece.”
Many of the photographers are non-verbal. Some take pictures using
only their tongue. But when the group sets their sights on creating a
museum-worthy exhibit of their work, they must overcome a skeptical public, relationship issues, and even death in the effort to bring
their unique perspective to light. As the photographers strive to
break down the barriers that too often keep them hidden from public
view, this film will make you rethink what it means to live with a disability-- and without one.

What is it like to have God like surgical powers, yet to struggle
against your own humanity? What is it like to try and save a life, and
yet to fail? Shot in a Ukrainian hospital full of desperate patients and
makeshift equipment, “The English Surgeon “ is an intimate portrait
of brain surgeon Henry Marsh as he wrestles with the dilemmas of
the doctor patient relationship. “It’s like selling your soul to the devil,
but what can you do? My son had a brain tumour as a baby and I was
desperate for someone to help me. I simply can’t walk away from that
need in others” With an original soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, “The English Surgeon” openly confronts moral and ethical
issues which touch every one of us. And all in a country called the
Ukraine which is struggling to do the same thing….

job and leaving the island. Meanwhile his girlfriend and band mate
Sage who is thrilled to be leaving the island with Eric to pursue a

Imagine a world without fish. It’s a frightening premise, and it’s happening right now. A Sea Change follows the journey of retired history
teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happening to
the world’s oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Darkening
Sea,” Sven becomes obsessed with the rising acidity of the oceans and
what this “sea change” bodes for mankind. His quest takes him to
Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis that most people are unaware of. Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental
catastrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide is dissolving in our
oceans, changing sea water chemistry. The more acidic water makes
it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the food web to form
their shells. The effects could work their way up to the fish 1 billion
people depend upon for their source of protein.

NarrativeShort–CapeCodSection

A Sea Change is also a touching portrait of Sven’s relationship with
his grandchild Elias. As Sven keeps a correspondence with the little
boy, he mulls over the world that he is leaving for future generations.
A disturbing and essential companion piece to An Inconvenient
Truth, A Sea Change brings home the indisputable fact that our lifestyle is changing the earth, despite our rhetoric or wishful thinking.
Upon returning to the United States to visit his grandson Elias, Sven
seeks out the individuals and organizations who are pursuing a range
of solutions to acidification as he tries to determine where hope may
lie in this epic struggle for the future of the oceans.

Waiting for Armageddon
Documentary Feature
WAITING FOR ARMAGEDDON explores America’s 50-million
member Evangelical community, a group convinced that the world’s
future is foretold in Biblical prophecy—from the Rapture to the Battle
of Armageddon. The film follows Evangelicals in their homes, at
conferences, and on a wide-ranging tour of Israel, the site where they
believe Christ will return again. By interweaving Christian Zionist,
Jewish and critical perspectives along with telling archival material,
the film probes the politically powerful, and potentially explosive,
alliance between Evangelical Christians and Israel—one that may set
the stage for what one prominent Evangelical leader calls “World War III.”

To her surprise, he actually wrote back. Jackson put Emily in touch
with Harry Knowles, editor of Ain’t It Cool News, who also lived in
Austin, Texas, which opened Emily up to the local film community.
She gained access to special movie screenings and began expanding
her film palate. And then she saw “Undead.,” a zombie import from
Australia. A low-budget film with no stars. But Emily didn’t care. To
her, it was amazing. After that, her appetite for horror was insatiable.
Most twelve-year-olds are busy with friends, homework, and online
chatting. But film obsessed Emily Hagins spends her time writing
and directing a feature-length zombie movie, starring her young
friends and classmates. ZOMBIE GIRL: THE MOVIE documents the
exhilarating and heartbreaking two years it took her to shoot, edit,
and world premiere the film to a sold out audience in Austin, Texas.
With the help of her mother as agent, crew, and biggest fan, Emily
launches an epic adventure in genre filmmaking, battling everything
from budget shortfalls to self-doubt, all while coming of age as a
teenager. Emily has the vision and her mom has the driver’s license.
Together, their journey is a fascinating look at a growing world of
young moviemakers and the bloodiest mother/daughter story you’ve
ever seen.

A group of musicians who draw their inspiration from within, Tripping Lily has
deeply explored songwriting with their personal and passionate work. With Demetrius Becrelis (ukulele/guitar/vocals), brother Alex Becrelis (mandolin/vocals), Monica
Rizzio (fiddle/ukulele/vocals) ,and Laird Boles (stringed bass), Tripping Lily blends a
unique sound of traditional and contemporary genres. The Boston Globe says, “Tripping
Lily is a genre unto itself.” Tripping Lily’s song “For Five Years or More” went to number
one for several weeks on Boston’s Folk Station WUMB. While attending the IBMA festival
in Nashville in 2006 they were interviewed on Great American Country (GAC TV).
Touted as fresh, energetic, and alive, Tripping Lily’s pop-rock groundwork is cross-fertilized with folk music and
cutting edge vocal harmonies. The band’s unique ability to absorb traditional music while speaking to the here and
now is proof of their versatility as contemporary musicians. Tripping Lily seeks to exploit the empty space of the
canvas. They unravel everything they’ve known and in turn, end up in a better place.

Trust Us This Is All Made Up
The heart knows no borders. David, George, and Greg, best friends
since high school, make up ‘The War Boys.’ They used to perch on the
US-Mexican border, waiting to spot illegal immigrants who were trying to run into the United States. Sometimes, without a thought for
the plight of the immigrants, the boys chased them across the wasteland and back across the border—just for fun. It was just one of those
games boys played to make themselves feel big. But high school’s
over now. David is unexpectedly home from his freshman year of
college, and the War Boys have been reunited. Now the boys come
up with a new plan—they steal a truck from David’s father’s trucking
company, filled with what they believe to be black market televisions.
Their plan to sell them, make a quick buck, and move to New York
is complicated, however, when the contents of the truck prove to be
much more sinister than the boys had thought. Meanwhile, new feelings and relationships are forming between them, their friends, and
their families. The young vigilantes come to realize that they are as
vulnerable and as helpless as the immigrants they once chased across
the border. Starring Peter Gallagher.

‘We don’t know anything, until we look into each other’s eyes, and
then we start to know everything...’ Described by Time Out Chicago
as ‘two of the world’s finest practitioners of the art of long-form
improv’ and by the New York Times as ‘Second City-seasoned masters’, Tj Jagodowksi and David Pasquesi have become living legends
in their field. For the past six years, their performances of entirely
improvised, character-driven, often hilarious and wholly original
one-hour plays have mesmerized audiences worldwide. Exploring
the folds of trust and faith that underlie their relationship as well as
the transcendental forces that govern their improvisation, TRUST
US, THIS IS ALL MADE UP features an unforgettable live performance recorded at New York’s Barrow Street Theater earlier this
year. Whether you’re a student of improvisation or simply interested
in the underpinnings of human imagination and the depths of mutual
understanding, this journey will leave you laughing, guessing, and in
awe of this altogether remarkable feat.

with tuberculosis of the spine, a disease that creates massive humps
on the backs of its victims. Eventually they’re forced into a permanent forward-bending posture, which in turn prevents their lungs
from working properly, and if left untreated leads to death. Driven by
his devotion to Orthodox Judaism and it’s belief that ‘He who saves
one life, saves an entire world’, Hodes provides these patients with
hospital care - arranges for complex overseas surgeries—often paying
for these out of his own pocket—and has, thus far, adopted seventeen
children in order to provide them with not only proper medical care
but a home and an education. Often compared with Albert Schweitzer
and Mother Teresa, Hodes believes the only way to change the world
is to be the change.

Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist
Documentary Feature
Mixing humor with heartbreak, the film tells a profoundly real yet
intensely dramatic story about three irrepressible graduate students
in a race to beat the competition to discover the switch that controls
appetite in the human body. The pressure is on, as they each have to
deal with their own personal challenges. Rob, a perennial dropout,
dares himself to stay the course. Kilpatrick has to choose between
the easy life and academic success. Gabriele hovers between high
aspirations and self-doubt. Their guide and mentor, Larry, is a young
professor deeply committed to passing on the baton of science. He
urges his students to apply their creativity to solve problems, while
encouraging them to embrace the emotional roller coaster of doing
science. Over three years of filming, verite scenes of intense hands-on
research reveal the ups and downs of the mentor-student relationship, the collaboration that science depends on, and the self-knowledge that success requires. Gabriele finally admits that she prefers to
work in a team rather than put herself on the line and quits the PhD
program. Kilpatrick, having battled Larry to get him through the PhD
quickly, takes a job in business. Rob comes close to dropping out,
but driven by his passion to make an impact and sustained by Larry’s
unreserved confidence in him, scores a breakthrough success and
discovers himself as a scientist.

Women of Faith
DocumentaryFeature-CapeCodSection
As the Catholic Church continues to play a role in a number of controversial areas of modern life, the nun in her habit stands as a symbol of the Church’s positions on everything from abortion to war. In
the process, she loses her own identity, her own thoughts and opinions, in the eyes of the rest of us. ‘Women of Faith’ pulls back the veil
and allow women with intimate knowledge of the Church to speak
their minds about everything from homosexuality to women’s ordination to the Church’s role in Latin America. Interviews include several
active and contemplative nuns, a former lesbian nun, and a woman
who became an illicit Roman Catholic priest in the face of possible
excommunication. The women in this film represent a wide range of
Catholic women religious and their explanations for staying a part of
the Church. The film was made over a period of 6 years in Ossining,
New York; Washington, D.C.; and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Oh My God, It’s Harrod Blank!
Documentary Feature
Children of Invention
An obsessively made documentary filmed over 18 years, exploring
the creative life and adventures of director Silberberg’s friend, the
eccentric art car artist, filmmaker, and entrepreneur Harrod Blank.
Blank is captured from his youth growing up in the woods with chickens and working as a camera assistant for his father—the venerable
film-maker Les Blank—to the creation of his first attention-getting
art car, to his current multi-faceted career as creator and head of a
nationwide art car movement. Rarely does a film about an artist leave
us with such a good feeling about life. This film goes far beyond a
portrait of an artist, it covers home remedies for balding, attraction to
black women, independent filmmaking, art cars, and most importantly it reminds us of the journey to discovering oneself that we all
must take.
David Silberberg, 74 min. 2008, USA
Narrative Feature
After being evicted from their home, the Cheng family finds that
times are tighter than ever. Hardworking single mom and recent
Boston transplant Elaine tries desperately to find the means to support her young children, Raymond and Tina. They squat in a model
apartment in an unfinished building, but try to maintain a normal
life. Elaine juggles a number of jobs, including working for a questionable pyramid scheme. Meanwhile, Raymond and Tina become
latchkey kids and find amusement in building childish inventions.
When Elaine doesn’t return home one night, things take a turn for
the worse. Nobody knows the kids are home alone, and they are left
to fend for themselves. As the days pass, Raymond realizes he needs
to come up with a plan to take care of his little sister. Based on Tze
Chun’s own award-winning short film, “Windowbreaker,’ which
screened at the 2007 Woods Hole and Sundance Film Festivals, ‘Children of Invention’ is a drama about the influence of an adult world
on children, the immigrant mentality, and shortcuts to the American
dream.

American Casino
Documentary Feature
In the past year Washington has committed eight and a half billion
dollars to bail out Wall Street. Most people would like to know why.
Starting from the dark December evening in 2000 in the U. S. Senate
chamber, when a trusted friend of Wall Street slipped casino rules
into American law the game of homeownership in America changed.
We meet the players. In an unprecedented interview, a former Bear
Stearns banker candidly explains that the complex securities he
designed were “fourth dimensional” and sold to “idiots.” A senior
Wall Street ratings agency executive describes how he finally resigned
rather than “guess” the worth of billion dollar securities. A mortgage
loan salesman admits how borrowers’ incomes were casually inflated
to justify a loan. A billionaire describes how he made a massive bet
that people would lose their homes and has won $500 million, so
far. As American Casino reveals, this is the grim truth at the heart
of our current financial disaster. In Baltimore and all across the
country, subprime loans were disproportionately targeted at AfricanAmericans as well as other minorities. The film lays out the story of
Baltimore’s groundbreaking lawsuit against the Wells Fargo Bank,
the leading subprime lender in the city. John Relman, the veteran
civil rights attorney who is representing Baltimore sums up the issue: “This is the civil rights issue of the twenty-first century.” In the
trading rooms of Wall Street and around the globe, these people and
millions more like them were reduced to electronic blips on a Bloomberg screen, anonymous abstractions of leveraged risk. A direct link
between an actual homeowner in danger of losing his home and a
Wall Street bond has never been made. Uniquely, American Casino
makes that link, finding Denzel Mitchell’s mortgage inside the vast
pool of a Goldman Sachs bond, securitized under the leadership of
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

By dawn, the interchange of the 134 Freeway and Interstate 210 is
already starting to thrum with traffic. But only a hundred feet away,
the Dervaes family has been up for hours. Their surprisingly tiny
green oasis is a working farm right in the middle of Pasadena. Once
seen as a nutty idea, the family homestead now produces three tons
of organic produce a year. Jules and his adult children, Justin, Ana
and Jordanne speak candidly about what shaped their family and
their need for independence. We learn about Jules’ father, an oil
executive with a green thumb, Jules’ adventures as a young man
homesteading in New Zealand, and the sorrows and hardships their
family has faced over the years, including divorce, lawsuits and a stint
foraging for recyclable cans. We watch them wrestle with their quest
to live a simple lifestyle even as their website, “Path To Freedom,”
demands more attention from followers around the world. Originally
set up to share farming tips, it now dangles tantalizing prospects of a
financial windfall. But what would it mean to sell ad space on their
website instead of getting their hands dirty? Would it change their
way of life if they got used to easy money? And how will Jules’ children be able to buy their own homesteads and carry on in the future?
There are no easy answers. But along the way, the Dervaes have
grown stronger and found a tight knit community based on family,
friends, good food, hard work, and the commitment to tread lightly
upon the earth.

fell in love in an attempt to say her final goodbye to her late husband,

together returned every summer for 61 years. But this story of love,
loss and the ritual of summer in Maine is more than a retelling of an
individual romance. Shot by the Luccock’s grandsons, “Once More to

place changes over the course of time.

conscious love of Dirt. And Dirt, couldn’t be happier. But humans
turn greedy and indifferent. They slash away at vast tracts of forests,
strip the land bare for huge, single crop farms, and level entire mountains for mining. When Dirt can no longer produce what they need,
they try to revive Dirt with chemicals or move onto other lands. They
turn Dirt into something dirty. Unwanted. Distant. Disposable. Dirt
despairs that humans are destroying themselves along with the ancient bond they share. Perhaps this fascinating species is only meant
to be compost for other life forms. In a last ditch effort, Dirt searches
for humans who might save the relationship. Maybe--just maybe--a
few humans can reignite the love and respect that seems to be lost

Sustainable Living
One would have to be a slight bit deluded to go into documentary
filmmaking for riches or fame, but is it possible to even make a sustainable living as a non-fiction filmmaker? A recent Oscar nominated
documentarian was quoted as saying that she envied farmers, because “at least they are subsidized.” Nonfiction films, often expensive,
challenging, years-long in the making, are very financially taxing,
particularly in our current economic climate. Filmmakers often have
to take on other jobs, and find creative ways of funding. We talk to
those in the trenches - up and coming directors, seasoned producers,
filmmakers’ advocates, editors-for-hire, about ways to make a decent
living as a documentarian.

Inga (Marcia Gay Harden) is a poet and mother to a young daughter
(Eulala Scheel, Ms. Harden’s real life daughter). Inga is drawn to a
house that reminds her of her childhood home, and here she realizes
that many things in her life are coming full circle. She wants to buy
and restore this old house but her distant husband Hermann sees
little value in old houses or many of the things Inga loves and writes
about.Inga’s barren marriage is in stark contrast to her closeness
with her 8 year old daughter with whom she shares her hopes, fears
and innermost thoughts. By day their relationship seems magical, full
of cloud watching, kite flying and lazy summer drives. But at night
Inga is troubled by her marriage, it’s lack of intimacy and her fears
of her own mortality. Inga’s childhood was marred by her mother’s
illness and use of morphine to control her pain. Now facing recent
breast cancer Inga is using alcohol in much the same way. And just
as she watched her mother, her daughter is now anxiously watching
her. Like many artists Inga’s struggle is reflected in her poems which
she writes on scraps of paper and then discards. But it is in her own
poems that she hears the echo of what her mother must have gone
through and it is this revelation that allows Inga to transform.

ICA: The Best of New England Animation
Narrative Short
A wintry dawn steals into the blizzard of the previous night. A
tired, frantic father is on the phone, searching everywhere, fearing
the worst. Headlights flash. A car pulls up, and a girl emerges. She
weaves her way to the front door, where he waits, relieved -- and
livid. In DECEMBER THAW, an all-out fight between a single dad
and his maturing daughter fractures their close bond, and threatens
to finish the seasonal quest that has been dear to both for all of there
days together…until now.

by divorce and remarriage. Their hearts are in the right places, but
Tom and Spencer find themselves reeling emotionally during the first

is a story of intense love and rivalry between a father and son.
Laura Longsworth, 82 min. 2008, USA
Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters -a
group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank
American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq, the film quickly
turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality. When its three subjects aren’t
at the airport, they wrestle with their own problems: failing health,
depression, mounting debt. Joan, a grandmother of eight, has a deep
connection to the soldiers she meets. The sanguine Jerry keeps his
spirits up even as his personal problems mount. And the veteran Bill,
who clearly has trouble taking care of himself, finds himself contemplating his own death. Seeking out the telling detail rather than
offering sweeping generalizations, the film carefully builds stories of
heartbreak and redemption, reminding us how our culture casts our
elders, and too often our soldiers, aside. More important, regardless
of your politics, ‘The Way We Get By’ celebrates three unsung heroes
who share their love with strangers who need and deserve it.

Shout it Out is an original musical based on the lives of Vermont

nostalgia for the past; friendship; and first love. Shout it Out is a raw,

Tales from the Catholic Church of Elvis!
Featuring the music of the Jazz trio Quasi Modal
Narrative Feature
The Mother Lode of all Dichotomies: the One Holy Roman Catholic Apostolic Church, and Fabulous Las Vegas! In ‘Tales from the
Catholic Church of Elvis!’, Mercy Malick wraps the two together in a
tightly-wound package that skips happily and harrowingly through
eleven years as a Catholic schoolgirl living in Sin City, USA. With a
passing nod to everything from Monty Python to Benny Hill, way
beyond South Park and Napoleon Dynamite, and well on the far side
of recent films like Little Miss Sunshine and the Farrelly Brothers
fare, ‘Tales’ is a remarkable immersion in a world all its own. Staged
within the framework of a shockingly schlock Vegas stage show at
the eponymous Catholic Church of Elvis, ‘Tales’ follows a young girl
from her early fascination with Vegas glitz, accompanied by prayer,
of course, along a time-twisting series of adventures that bring into
delightful juxtaposition brain-boggling epiphanies that include
colostomy bag as alternative to babies, and pizza box as indoorouthouse. Much like our surrogates, the peripatetic audience of the
Catholic Church of Elvis, we stagger out of ‘Tales’ into the garish neon

Film Criticism
Documentary Feature
It’s the responsibility of everyone in the room to create an environment that supports ideas. All participants will be encouraged to Act
in or Direct a Film audition. Subjects to be covered will range from
Typecasting, to Call Backs, to how to test ability of both amateurs
and professionals. Auditions will be taped and suggestions given on
techniques which result in strong choices and finding the perfect Actor for the role.
For a hundred years, virtually the history of American movies, film
critics have championed this medium they so unabashedly love.
They advise audiences in deciding what movies to see, and why.
Better, their reviews illuminate the film-going experience, suggesting paths for readers to enter cinema more deeply, thoughtfully,
appreciatively.’For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film
Criticism’ is the first documentary to dramatize the rich, fascinating
history of American film criticism. From the raw beginnings of criticism before ‘The Birth of a Nation’ to Bosley Crowther’s 27-year reign
at ‘The New York Times,’ from the incendiary Kael-Sarris debates
of the 1960s and 70s to the battle for audience between youthful
on-liners and the print establishment, this documentary tells all.Produced by Amy Geller (PBS’s ‘Murder at Harvard’ and ‘The War that
Made America’), written and directed by veteran ‘Boston Phoenix’
critic Gerald Peary, ‘For the Love of Movies’ offers a unique insider’s
view of the film critics’ profession, with commentary from America’s
best-regarded reviewers, including Roger Ebert (‘The Chicago
Sun-Times’), A.O. Scott (‘The New York Times’), Lisa Schwarzbaum
(‘Entertainment Weekly’), Kenneth Turan (‘The Los Angeles Times’).

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo
Documentary Feature
Sold live in vending machines and department stores; plastic replicas
included as prizes in the equivalent of a McDonald’s Happy Meal;
the subject of the No. 1 videogame MushiKing; and from the smallest backyard to the top of Mt. Fuji, insects inspire an enthusiasm
in Japan seen nowhere else in this world. “Beetle Queen Conquers
Tokyo” solves the mystery of why Japan developed this enriching
social relationship with insects while other first-world countries
developed a terror of these many-legged beings.Working backwards
from the present day, like a detective story, this 0film unlocks the
mystery behind Japan’s love affair with insects. Interspersed with the
philosophies of one of Japan’s best-selling authors and anatomist,
Dr. Takeshi Yoro, and scattered with poetry and art from Japan’s history, this film becomes about much more than insects. “Beetle Queen
Conquers Tokyo” is set to the rhythm of traditional Japanese values,
attention to detail, harmony, and the appreciation of the seemingly
mundane. The film quietly challenges the viewer to observe the world
from an uncommon perspective that will shift the familiar to the
fantastic and just might change not only the way we think about bugs,
but the way we think about life.
