from the- alley near S. W . Epley’s
house, with a man and two dogs after
her; The horse took fright at this
show and commenced to back, cramp­
ing the right fore wheel under the

started to run the other way, and ran
to nearly opposite Mr. Epley’s house
when the. buggy struck a hitching
post and upset, throwing the passen
gers all out onto .the side walk. None
were seriously hurt unless it be Mr.
Jones, who*says that the horse kicked
him in the chest. The oldest child, a
girl about ten or twelve years old, had
her faco badly bruised and one knee
hurt.

E d . R ecord—Dear Sir : in the
last weeks’ issue o f your paper I no­
ticed a couple o f items which I wish
to correct. First, the notice of- tho
death o f Miss Ella Yaw, stating that
ler sickness was measles. This is a mis­
take. Her sickness was menigitis, or
inflammation o f the brain, a disease
which almost invariably proves fatal.
Second, the item about the social
dance in Galieu one week ago last
' ’ riday evening, saying, “ it ended in
a social fight, in which all participat­
ed.” Now, in Galien, four or five,
parties, who saw fit to disturb a. dance,
does not mean ail. W e do not- wish
to be represented worse than we. arc,
for the Lord knows we are bad enough.

Disease Grows Apace,
Like an ill wind, and cannot be mastered
too early. What is a trifliqg attack
of sickness to-day may, if unattended to,
become a serious case in a weak. Small

light red, with white face, a white
spot on each flank, one on the top o f
the shoulder and a white tail, has a
split in the loft ear, was taken up
from the public highway by me in
August last, and is now at my prem­
ises, three-fourths o f a mile east of
H ill’s Corners, in Weesaw township.
The owner can secure the above by
proving property and paying costs.

Horn—Their Indications.
Much may be learned from the set
and from the haras o f cattle and
•sheep, as indicative o f character.
5 Small, short, slouching horns on a
two or three year old ox give a grave
and .contented aspect to the counte­
nance. Long, slouching horns, as on
the long-horn cattle, seem to oppress
the head -with a constant weight.
Horns springing outward from the
sides o f the head, then rising up and
Lending backward never fail to im­
press that their bearer is quick-tern
pered, ready to use them offensively,
and are set so as to toss up any ob-<
je ct with ease. Such horns may he
i seen on the Jersey bull.
Horns
curving laterally and horizontally for­
ward give a finished appearance to
the tap o f the head when viewed in
front. Such are generally met with
in Southern cattle.

ing outward, forward, aud having
points outward, impart a majestic air

hind the head, give an idea o f mal­
formation. Horns springing outward
and then coming straight forward in
the points, seem dangerous. Horns

ment the head.
A horn truck at the
root for its length looks clumsy, and
more so when blunted at the point,
and both are associated with dull
feeders.
When springing outward
much, and seen turning downward,
they are ungraceful, A good horn,
however set, is small whore it emerges
from tne head, and tapers gradually
to a small point. A white horn looks
better than a dark-colored and a tip
o f brown or black, according to the
breed, gives a neat finish, though
HI most short horns have entirely white,
and being short and carving upward,
serve more for ornament than defense.
Cattle with spreading horns are bet­
ter feeders than, those with them con­
tracted suddenly in front.
Horns, ^indicate the age o f cattle.
A t three years old the horn is uni­
formly smooth from the root to the
tip.
Every year after three it has a
notch on it, so, counting: the notches,
| and adding three, the age o f the ani­
mal is ascertained.
Tricks are prac­
ticed by fraundulent dealers in filing
down the old notches, to make the
animal appear younger, and the unso: phiaticated are thereby deceived; hut
a slight inspection o f the horn will
easily detect the fraud. The period
o f calving, whether late or early,
affects the notches o f the horn, which
may give an older or yonnger appear­
ance to the animal than its true age.
A s with the cattle the horns o f sheep
indicate the age o f the animal.
The horns are very sensitive organs,
no part o f the body indicating the
presence o f internal disease more
quickly than they do. In pushing
directly forward in a fight, horns wifi
: hear a great fo r c e ; yet a single stroke
I upon them with a cudgel is severely
felt by the animal; and a single stroke
may even, cause the horn to slip off
the flint, which, being a vascular hone
is full o f Blood vessels, and bleeds
freely. Such an injury may cause
inhumation, o f the brain or lockjaw.
When: the horns feel deathlike cold,
inflamation in the body is indicated ;
when hot, fever. The horns are not
liable to disease; only illiterate peo*
„ pie, quacks, and cow-leaches imagine
\f that they are: “subject to an ailment,
by, them termed “ hollow-horn,”

Ducklings More Profitable Than
Chickens.
The saying often applied to young
t ducks that “ they eat more than they
Lare worth,” may/no a very unjust one.
Several years ago we were speaking
with a woman who raised yearly large
I numbers of ducks and chickens, re| garding the comparative amount of
| food consumed to bring them to their

*as full growth. She stated that “ ducks
eat less in proportion to their growth
| than chickens,” Our readers may be
surprised at this, but upon giving the
matter a little thought they will un­
derstand: the reason. I t is because
the ducklings reach maturity sooner
than the chickens, and. o f course, the
longer it takes to bring a creature to
maturity, the greater the expense,
not only o f food, but o f time and trou­
ble. Experiment has demonstrated
the fact that, with the same quantity
o f food and care, the ducklings, in
ninety days from the shell, may be
made to weigh nine or ten pounds per
pair. Hence the remark quoted at
the commencement o f this paper, does
not apply when ducklings are proper­
ly and intelligently managed.— Poul­

Gapes in Poultry.
In, a recent conversation with an
xperienced chicken grower, he, in­
formed us that he had been successful
in conquering that precarious disease
h his young fowls by the application
if air-slaked lime. A s soon as a man­
ifestation o f gapes in his fowls appears,
re confines his chickens in a box, one
it; a time, sufficiently large to contain
he bird, and, places a coarse piece o f
otton or linen cloth over the top.

told by a reformed inebriate, as an
apology for much o f the folly of
drunkards : A mouse, ranging about
a brewery, fell into one o f the vats o f
beer, and appealed to a cat to help
him out. The cat replied: “ It is a
foolish request, for as soon as I get
you I shall eat you.” The mouse pite­
ously replied, “ that fate would be bet­
ter than to be drowned in beer.” The
cat lifted him out, hut the fumes of
the beer caused puss to sneeze: The
cat Called on the mouse to come forth.
