PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents/Caregivers and Friends,
Film by the Sea
Last night Ms Collins, Ms Douglas and I had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Film by the Sea Festival at the Sutherland
Entertainment Centre with six families from 2C. Ms Collins and 2C contributed a Transport themed stop motion film and it
was selected for viewing at this year’s festival. Emily from 2C was also chosen for a very special award which recognised
her personal initiative in following up her class work by designing and producing her own film. Emily was the youngest
student to receive an award and the only K-2 student. What a sensational achievement! Congratulations to Ms Belinda
Collins, 2C and Emily. I’m so proud of you! I have attached a picture of Rose, Hyugo, Olivia, Katie, Sam and Emily at last
night’s ceremony.

2013 Kinder Orientation
Yesterday we concluded the 2013 orientation program for next year’s kindergarten. I wish to congratulate
Ms Lora Cipriani, the Assistant Principal for Early Stage 1 on this outstanding program. We had over one hundred parents in
the hall yesterday (and about the same the week before) and parents were given a clear overview of the literacy and
numeracy curriculum for kindergarten as well as having the chance to try out some of the activities the children will
participate in next year. The Canteen also showcased their marvellous range of food for all to sample and both Scott Hedge,
our P&C President and Sally Rudd, the P&C Vice-President, spoke to our new families and welcomed them to the
Drummoyne Community. A huge thank you to the team involved in making this program so successful and to the 2012
Kindergarten parents who supplied a sumptuous morning tea for new parents last week.
2013 Organisation
Could you please complete the attached form confirming your 2013 enrolment at Drummoyne Public School and return it to
the front office as soon as possible. This will enable us to have confidence in our preparation of classes for 2013. Changes
in the numbers of students can have significant impact on the number of classes we can form and where composite classes
will be needed. Your support in this process is greatly appreciated.
2013 Prefect Elections
Twenty Year 5 students have been chosen by their peers to stand for prefect election. They have each been asked to
prepare a short two minute speech outlining their leadership capacity and ways in which they believe they can be a role
model, and support and mentor the students in our school. The speeches will be presented to students in Years 3 to 5 next
Tuesday at 1.15 pm. Please encourage your children to think carefully and choose students who best reflect the five values
of our school – Kindness, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. Students will be invited to vote on the
following Thursday and the successful applicants will contact their parents on Friday morning. A special thank you to Mrs
Lynne Landi for her excellent organisation of this process.
Trivia Night
The preparations are in full swing for this Saturday’s Trivia Night. My office has been transformed into a picture gallery and,
please remember, you are most welcome to view the artworks before and after school – they are sensational and so diverse.
Congratulations to the teachers and students who have worked so hard to produce these amazing artworks. Just a note re
the artwork for 3/4C – it is a photographic book and the photo in the P&C’s Art Auction Presale Proxy Bid form is only the
front cover. I look forward to seeing you there and please remember you can place a bid using the aforementioned form if
you cannot attend on the night.
PRINCIPAL’S AWARDS

Personal Best: Calvin KP, Corrine 6F, Lochie 2S, Lara KG, Noah 1P, Jonathon 1/2D, Zoe KN, Sophie 2H, Sebastian 1/2D,

LIBRARY NEWS
I’m baaack! Greetings all and Happy Halloween! It rarely falls on a newsletter day so I thought it appropriate to mention
some Halloween shenanigans this year:
The 10th anniversary of the publication of Neil Gaiman’s book, Coraline, is being celebrated with YouTube readings by Neil
himself and some of his fellow authors and friends:
http://mousecircus.com/coraline-videos.aspx
Another worthy idea is All Hallows Read, briefly, this is a way to celebrate Halloween and reading at the same time by giving
your children, friends and neighbours a scary book instead of (or as well as) sweets.
Neil explains it here:
http://www.allhallowsread.com/
Chess continues in Term 4
Chess Lessons:
Lessons are continuing in the library on Tuesdays as mentioned previously. Students should remember to bring their lunch
and be on time i.e. 11.15 am.
Chess Club:
Chess Club is in the 2F classroom with Ms Alita Fahey.
New books
There are lots of new books for all ages and reading abilities.
Christmas and other celebrations
Apologies in advance if your child brings home a Christmas book for you to read with them! We have been keeping the
festive picture books safe from prying eyes in the Teachers’ Resources room so that they would stay fresh. Due to the
stocktake, many students will not get an opportunity to read the extensive range of Christmas books if we don’t put them out
now.
Book Club Term 4
Issue #7 has been delivered!
Lucky last, Issue #8 brochures are due at the school on or around 7 November and orders will close on Wednesday
21 November.
Stocktake
The library will be closed during Weeks 6 to 10 on Mondays, Tuesdays (except for Chess Lessons), Wednesday and
Thursdays for stocktake. This means that students in Years 1 to 6 will not come to the library with their teachers during those
weeks and that the library will not be open before school or at lunch time to anyone for borrowing or returning books.
The library will operate as normal on Fridays during Weeks 6 to 10. Students will be able to borrow and return books before
school and at lunch.
Kindergarten classes will continue to come for their library lessons with Mrs Stephens and me.
Happy All Hallows Reading

CELEBRATION CONCERT,
Sydney Town Hall
On Sunday 21 October, twenty-four members of the Drummoyne Senior Choir volunteered to participate in the 20 th Annual
Celebration Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. This charity concert raised funds for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Our choir joined hundreds of children from other participating schools as well as High School students, adult choirs and a full
adult orchestra, to perform a wonderful choral repertoire. The students also attended a training day at Macarthur Girls’ High
School at Parramatta on the previous Saturday.
Thank you to Mrs Gorham and Miss Champion for helping with supervision and participation on the weekend. Without them,
the Choir would not have had such a wonderful opportunity. Thank you to the parents for their support and attendance, and
thank you most importantly to those Choir students who participated. I was proud to be alongside them as they sang
beautifully and behaved superbly.

A word from the President
Hi everyone.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Art Show, which was just a terrific success. It was
great to see so much creativity on show from our talented students.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
I am really looking forward to the Trivia Night this Saturday. It is always such a
great night and I have no doubt this year’s will be great fun. Thank you again to
the members of the committee who have worked so hard to put the night
together.
A reminder that the Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday 20 November.
Please look on the web site for details of the roles. There will need to be
replacements for most executive positions for next year so please get involved.
I hope to see as many of you at the Trivia Night on Saturday
All the best.

Canteen News
YUM!! The next special in the canteen is Chicken Schnitzel on Tuesday
13 November. Chicken schnitzel in a wrap comes with lettuce, mayo and a
drink for $6. Please have your orders in by Monday 12 November.
The canteen is currently promoting a ‘Fresh for Kids’ fruit and vege
competition organised by Sydney Markets. Here’s a quick run down on how it
works:




Each time a piece of fresh fruit or
vegetables is purchased (and eaten!) the
child receives a sticker.
Collect four stickers and receive a
colourful snap band.
At this point the child may then enter
into the competition to win a TV, ipads
and electronic gumball prizes.
You may collect stickers and enter as
many times as you like, depending on
the amount of fruit and vege purchased
and eaten of course!
This is a fabulous promotion and we certainly encourage the children to
purchase and eat fresh fruit and veges. We love to see so many children
buying fruit, but apparently many pieces have found their way straight to the bin
– without a bite being taken! This is a huge waste of money and food. So
parents please remind your children that the fresh produce MUST be eaten. A
gentle reminder to children to use their manners and be polite when at the
canteen would also be appreciated…. Over excitement about the competition is
causing a distinct lack of manners! Sadly the competition will have to close if
this continues.

You may have noticed that the canteen is being painted in bright cheerful
colours! We hope you like it!! Painting started last weekend and hopefully will
be finished next weekend. Please be patient while the work is being carried
out.
Mandie is still finding many children coming to the canteen at recess without
money – particularly Kindergarten children. Please remind your children that if
they wish to purchase recess they must have money with them. Thank you!!

Dear Parent/Caregiver,
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: ENROLMENT CONFIRMATION
The organisation of classes for 2013 will commence this term and to assist us in this endeavour, we need to confirm your child’s
place at Drummoyne. Teachers work in committees to form classes which offer the best educational opportunity for our students.
They take into account the student’s academic and social needs. Teachers aim to create classes which are well balanced and
harmonious.
Almost every year we need to form some composite classes. When this occurs, we consider a specific focus for that class and
form criteria appropriately. We then select students who we feel will benefit most from that structure. Please remember that
classes are determined by the NSW Department of Education and Training staffing formula and the school must work within the
framework.
Staff will be using their professional judgement when placing students into groups to maximise the outcomes for all students. At
Drummoyne we aim to have class structure finalised as soon as possible to ensure an effective start and focus on learning and
teaching. However, enrolment changes which sometimes occur over the holiday period, can impact on our organisation and
delay the final structure. Teachers are aware of this and plan across grade themes to ensure student learning is supported.
There will be some staff changes in 2013, so please do not assume teaching staff will remain on the same grade as in 2012.
Your assistance with this important form is appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Gail Charlier

The Drummoyne Public School Band Program is now accepting enrolments for 2013! Managed by Directions In Music, our school band has enjoyed another very successful year and if you would like your
child to take part in 2013, now is the time to let us know.
At Directions In Music we are proud of our reputation for quality teaching and excellent results. Learning a musical instrument can be an important part of a child’s social development - and most of all it’s
fun!
All band members are led through a sequenced music program by our experienced music tutors, with a
focus on developing specific musical skills at appropriate stages. As the year progresses children will
acquire the musical skills to confidently present great performances of their own.
Is there a big commitment?
Membership includes two weekly sessions - the whole band rehearsal which gives students the opportunity to come together and play as a team, and also a separate instrumental tutorial in a small group for
each particular instrument.
Learning a musical instrument is fun and rewarding, however it also requires commitment and regular
practise. Our band members are expected to attend the scheduled rehearsals and lessons, as well as
the performances throughout the year.
What about the costs?
Band membership costs $260 per semester (2 terms) and this includes a small group tutorial, large band
rehearsals, and also regular performances. An enrolment fee of $25.00 will secure your child’s place in
band and is payable to Directions in Music as soon as we confirm your child’s place in band. This fee
will cover the cost of your band books.
How do I get an instrument?
All children will need to provide an instrument for band rehearsals and lessons. You can provide your
own, or you can purchase or hire one from us. Directions In Music offers special prices for all of our
associated schools. All hire instruments are charged at a rate of $110 per school term and there’s a
great hire-to-buy option too, which means we offer up to 90% of hire fees credited when you purchase
your instrument. For specific prices and more details, visit our website.
When are the rehearsals and lessons?
Our junior band rehearses on Friday before school. This band is for beginner students who have not
played their instruments before. Band members will also have a small group tutorial on their instrument
which is held after school on Tuesdays.
* Bass Guitar and keyboard places are offered as part of the program, however this instrument requires
private lessons rather than group tutorials. A suitable teacher can be recommended to anyone hoping to
take this up. Reduced band fees apply ($170 per semester) due to the additional lesson fees involved.
What do I do now?
Visit www.directionsinmusic.com.au to complete your enrolment application. Please call Leah in our
office on 9326 5131 if you have any questions about joining the school band program. Numbers on
some instruments may be limited - please enrol now so you don’t miss out!
