(Hap) Evans ’43,Ted Probert, Exeter Initiatives campaign director, Jim Burack ’80 and Evan Anderman ’83
went to extreme heights—12,000 feet to be
exact—to rekindle Exeter memories during a
Colorado hut trip last March. The trip marked the
second time an adventurous group has trekked to
Shrine Mountain Pass in Vail.
While temperatures hovered around 30-below
during the 2007 trip, this year’s conditions were
downright balmy, with temperatures soaring (!) into
the 20’s. Organized by Peter Williams, the trip is a
much-anticipated opportunity for alumni/ae to share their love for the mountains and devotion
to the Academy. During the 2008 trip, Hugh, a former member of the 10th Mountain Division,
set the pace for the climbers as they hiked three miles to Walter’s Cabin in a respectable 105
minutes. After a hearty lunch, the group forged ahead to the peak of Shrine Mountain, where the
snow was 30-feet deep and the cornice had a 40-foot wall of ice and snow. Once back at the
hut, the hikers enjoyed a home-cooked meal and swapped memories of Exeter.

INITIATIVES
THE
A
cross the country, Exonians celebrated the impact The
Exeter Initiatives has—and will continue to have—on the
Academy community. Heading into the final year of the campaign,
Exeter has much to celebrate, not the least of which is the generous support and unwavering loyalty of generations of Exonians.
While the campaign has crossed its initial dollar goal, work continues to meet the remaining goals, as well as emerging needs, by
June 30, 2009. During the last year of The Exeter Initiatives, events
across the country will honor many of the fine teachers who have
dedicated their lives to Harkness teaching and made a lasting
impression on generations of their students. We hope you will join
us at an event in your area. Please note, all captions are identified
