A letter from Joseph Weilgus & Beatrice Kernan We are honored to welcome you to the 2010 Sunshine Ball – Project Sunshine Canada’s Fourth Annual Gala! This year’s celebration is once again a sold-out occasion – a special gathering of enlightened individuals who believe in bringing joy back into the lives of children & families who face difficult medical challenges. With the tremendous support from the last year’s gala, Project Sunshine Canada was able to deliver & to diversify its vibrant programming in five medical facilities across Toronto & the greater Toronto area, & to expand northwards to a sixth facility, Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. Project Sunshine Canada stands as a pioneering model of international development & achievement. Project Sunshine has grown exponentially over the last 12 years, from one New York City college student in 1998 to 10,000 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, providing services in over 150 medical facilities worldwide. Every week of the year, across the globe, pediatric patients & their families experience Project Sunshine’s warm reach. We would like to thank the many donors, sponsors & supporters that faithfully contribute their time & resources each year to ensure Project Sunshine Canada’s growth & success. With your support, volunteers are able to work tirelessly to deliver laughter, fun, joy & educational enhancement to pediatric patients & their families. For this, we are forever grateful to you. A debt of gratitude is owed to tonight’s gala committee and co-chairs, Caroline Bell Ritchie, Sarah Miller and Lisa Parsons. With a heartfelt appreciation, we thank everyone who has been involved in making tonight such an extraordinary success. We acknowledge with pride our chapter leaders & volunteers, who give selflessly of their time. Their work & the orchestration of tonight’s event have been expertly overseen by Courtney McLeod, Manager of Project Sunshine Canada, with the support of Emily Daman & our program & administrative team in New York. Finally, we thank the brave & generous-spirited children whose smiles inspire us every day & make all of our efforts worthwhile. We are here for you tonight! Thank you all for celebrating 2010 Sunshine Ball with us! With appreciation & warmth, Joseph Weilgus Founder Beatrice Kernan Executive Director SUNSHINE BALL COMMITTEE A letter from THE Sunshine Ball Committee Co-Chairs Welcome to Project Sunshine Canada’s fourth annual Sunshine Ball. We are humbled to serve as the co-chairs for tonight’s event, & thankful to the donors, sponsors, volunteers & committee members for making this a spectacular evening. Project Sunshine Canada develops customized recreational, educational & social programs for children & families in hospitals across Toronto & the Greater Toronto Area. We are fortunate enough to have a dedicated group of volunteers who give their time, talents & energy to provide literacy programs, arts & crafts, parent wellness programs & special events to children & families who need them most. As of this year, Project Sunshine has expanded Northwards & now offers programs to children & families at Southlake Regional Health Center in Newmarket; making this our first regular program outside of Toronto. This success could not have been possible without the support from dedicated donors like your selves. Over the next few years Project Sunshine has the goal to expand its programs further into neighboring cities & towns, spread its rays, & brighten the lives of more children & families. We look forward to seeing Project Sunshine grow & are so proud to have been able to contribute to its current success. We have an exciting line up for this evening with emcee Seamus O’Regan, auctioneer Rob Cowley, & live entertainment from Theo Tams, The Rosedale Steel Orchestra & DJ Nelson. We thank them, as well as our volunteers, for their time & expertise in making this a spectacular evening. On behalf of the gala committee, we extend our thanks to you, our guests. Together, we have helped bring sunshine to over 700 families across Toronto & the GTA. Have a wonderful night! TORONTO ALL STARS STEEL ORCHESTRA musical guests T he Toronto All Stars Steel Orchestra (T.A.S.S.O.) was born out of necessity in 2000 as, after graduating from Rosedale Public School, most of the students did not have steelpan offered at the schools they were moving to. Since the band’s inception it has grown to become one of the most exciting new musical ensembles in the city of Toronto as seen by its recent gold win at the Australian International Music Festival in Sydney which included 1,500 participants from 21 other groups from around the world. Today, the group is thirty members strong & they practice weekly & performing regularly. An amazing feat & noteworthy commitment when considering that they are between the ages of twelve & eighteen years of age & now attend upwards of ten different schools across the GTA. At its inception, no one could have predicted the amazing evolution of the steelpan program at Rosedale Public School & its impact on the community. These musicians have racked up an impressive success rate in competition, consecutively winning the Kiwis Music Festival competition in their categories for a number of years to date. They have also performed at many of the prestigious & famous halls in Toronto, amongst them Ford Centre for the Performing Arts, Massy Hall, Roy Thompson Hall & the Leah Pollens Theatre. They have become a fixture at Rosedale Public School social functions, & support many charitable causes & community events. A THEO TAMS musical performer native of Coaldale Alberta, Theo set off in 2008 to his first Canadian Idol audition in Calgary with not only a sense of fear, but also the determination that this is something he wanted and needed. The rest is history and in May 2009, the University of Lethbridge classical music major launched his debut pop album “Give It All Away” (Sony). To date, three singles have been released from the album; with two titles as top 5 successes. This summer, Theo performed in Afghanistan for the Canadian troops on Canada Day, before setting off on an extensive Canadian tour where he played intimate venues to great reviews from fans & industry alike. With winter ahead, he will be back to writing for his sophomore album slated for release next year. A Gemini nominated performer & multi-faceted artist, Theo Tams’ unique piano; singer/ songwriter style demonstrates that he is clearly an artist with the talent & tenacity to sustain a long & substantial career. SEAMUS O’REGAN emcee co-host, canada am Seamus O’Regan is from St. John’s, Newfoundland, & was raised in Goose Bay, Labrador. He is the co-host of CTV’s CANADA AM, & host of ARTS & MINDS & THE O’REGAN FILES on Bravo! He was a proud member of CTV’s Olympic Morning team at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. O’Regan studied politics at St. Francis Xavier University & University College, Dublin. He received his Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge in England. He is the Honourary Chairman of Artbound, dedicated to building arts schools in developing countries. He serves on the boards of the World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Canada World Youth, the Smiling Land Foundation, The Company Theatre, & The Rooms – which houses the Provincial Art Gallery, Museum, & Archives of Newfoundland & Labrador. Project Sunshine Canada 2010 Sunshine Ball Committee committee co-chairs Caroline Bell Ritchie Sarah Miller Lisa Parsons gala committee Thank you to our incredible Sunshine Ball co-chairs & committee for their tremendous support & dedication to Project Sunshine Canada. The Sunshine Ball is an outstanding success due to their passion & commitment! “I can’t thank the Project Sunshine volunteers enough for the time that they have spent with my little girl. They have brought the life back into her eyes & she is finally laughing again.” - Mother of a young patient, following a Project Sunshine event in Toronto - Susanne Alexandor Sarah Currie Charla Cusinato Cayley Dickenson Lauren Dill Petrina Dolby Patrick Erlich Liz Gallery Karra Greenwood Tracey Howland William Keay Colleen McGill Karen Mulder Vanessa Mulroney Abbey Oldland Kelli Parton Johanna Simmonds Meg Sinclair Stephanie Tamblyn Sarah Wellings THIS IS HOW WE SHINE Project Sunshine is a nonprofit organization that provides free educational, recreational & social programs to children facing medical challenges & their families. Project Sunshine empowers a dynamic & dedicated corps of over 10,000 volunteers to bring programs to over 60, 000 children & their families in Canada, the United States, China, Israel, Kenya & Puerto Rico. Project Sunshine Canada hosted its 3rd Annual Sunshine Ball in October 2009, raising close to $200,000. As a result of that highly successful event, & with the support of its very dedicated volunteers, Project Sunshine Canada is now operating programs at The Hospital for Sick Children, Mt. Sinai Hospital, North York General Hospital, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Southlake Regional Health Centre & the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic. Our goal is to continue to provide valuable programs to children & families in need at our existing facilities, as well as to explore new opportunities & partnerships with medical establishments throughout Toronto & the surrounding area. Project Sunshine works with each hospital to determine where our help is needed most & finds the appropriate volunteers to create customized programs. Project Sunshine’s chapters are comprised of a core group of volunteers who coordinate & provide services on a regular basis. Chapters range from as few as five volunteers to as many as three hundred. Project Sunshine encourages volunteers to participate as often as they feel comfortable, whether it is several days a week, once a month or at annual special events. PROJECT SUNSHINE PROGRAMS Programming takes place in clinics, emergency room waiting areas, pediatric & hospital play rooms. Special service volunteering takes place outside of a medical facility in corporate conference rooms, school cafeterias, or community centers, where groups of individuals join together through their employers, communities & schools to create craft kits, surgi-dolls & Sunshine Gram cards. PROJECT SUNSHINE CANADA CHAPTERS PARTICIPATE IN THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: Arts & Crafts activities offer children a chance to express their feelings through creative means & give children a sense of normalcy during their difficult time. These projects enable children to communicate emotions, fears & concerns in a non-verbal manner. Children create seasonal or holiday items or crafts for their rooms including pictures frames, personalized signs, & clay sculptures. Book Buddies promotes literacy & self confidence as volunteers read with children in hospital clinics & inpatient units. At the end of the sessions, children are given the books they read, empowering them to strengthen their reading skills on their own time. Parent Wellness Program gives parents of hospitalized children much needed attention. Volunteers transform hospital rooms into relaxing environments where parents receive massages from professional therapists and participate in relaxation exercises. By providing support to family members, the overall physical, social and emotional health of a child improves. Family Days encourages families to give back to the community as they volunteer together to benefit children facing medical challenges. Project Sunshine receives requests from parents who want to volunteer with their children to teach community involvement at an early age. Together, families create craft kits to send to hospitalized children. P roject Sunshine had grown tremendously since its inception in 1998, but there are so many more children we can reach. Your support enables us to achieve our goals & bring sunshine to their lives. With your support we will be able to: SPONSORSHIP $25,000 Revitalize a paediatric waiting room $15,000 Sponsor “Sunshine Pals” teddy bears given to children in ambulances $10,000 Sponsor a Project Sunshine Book Buddies reading chapter for one year $5,000 Sponsor a Project Sunshine chapter for one year $1,000 Sponsor holiday celebrations for children in a medical facility $500 Sponsor Sunshine Chefs cooking event for children in a paediatric unit $250 Sponsor one holiday celebration for children in a medical facility $100 Send craft activity kits to children in hospital or emergency rooms Please contribute to the Project Sunshine endowment fund at any level to ensure the future of our programs. title sponsor SUNSHINE BALL SPONSORS “Wow!
