Central Hardin High School’s Vex Robotics Teams officially formed January 2013. The teams have evolved into 5 teams to date and over 30 student members. Using the knowledge students have gained from the Project Lead the Way curriculum, they have attacked the Vex Robotics Challenge as an Engineering Problem and used the Design Process to lead them. As the 2013-14 season progresses CHHS Bruin 6135 teams are World ranked in Skills Challenges, have teams winning 10 Tournament Championships, won 5 Excellence Awards, and have already begun to mentor other teams in their Rookie VRC Season. Some of the Robotics Team Members Michael Riggs, 17 years old, and a senior at Central Hardin High School. I am the Captain, Driver, Programmer, and Lead Engineer of the 6135B VEX Robotics team. I am also president of the CHHS Technology Student Association Club. Away from school, I volunteer at Feeding America, play basketball, play piano, and compete in MLG. I have always had an interest in mechanics and electronics, which leads me toward engineering. This is why I am taking AP classes, such as AP Calculus and AP English. After high school I plan to attend the University Of Kentucky College Of Engineering and major in Mechanical Engineering. Josh Newton, 17 years old, and I’m currently a senior at Central Hardin High School. I serve as Programming Assistant and Engineer 3 of VEX Robotics team 6135B. I’m currently employed at Chick-fil-a. In my free time I enjoy reading and bike riding as well as music. I also play in praise band at Gilead Baptist church. My general interest for math and mechanics has lead me towards an engineering career, so it is amazing to be a part of a VEX Robotics team, especially one that’s doing well. I plan on going to Western Kentucky University for a Mechanical Engineering degree. Jacob Harmon, 18 years old, and currently a senior at Central Hardin High School. I serve as Engineer 2 of the 6135B VEX Robotics team. I’m currently employed at Mc. Donald’s. In my free time I enjoy music, and guitar; I play in the Gilead Baptist church Praise band. I’ve always been interested in mechanical things, and building, so when I heard about the VEX Robotics team I was excited. I plan on going to Western Kentucky University for Mechanical Engineering. After I graduate high school, I plan to attend college and work in software design or engineering. What is Vex Robotics Competition? VEX Robotics is the world’s fastest growing competitive robotics program for middle schools, high schools and colleges around the world. The VEX Robotics Design System is used in more than 7,000 classrooms in the United States alone, and will be in 10,000 classrooms next year. There are currently more than 10,000 teams from 24 countries participating in more than 400 VEX Robotics Competition events worldwide. The competition season culminates each Spring, with the laudable VEX Robotics World Championship event, uniting top qualifying teams from local, state and international VEX Robotics Competitions. VEX Toss Up Game Details VEX Toss Up is played on a 12’x12’ square field configured as seen above. Two alliances – one “red” and one “blue” – composed of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a fifteen second autonomous period followed by one minute and forty-five seconds of driver-controlled play. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing Alliance by Scoring your colored BuckyBalls and Large Balls into the Middle Zone and Goal Zone, by Stashing your colored BuckyBalls and Large Balls into the Goals, and by Hanging or Hanging With A Ball, at various heights, off your colored Bar at the end of the match. There are a total of twenty (20) BuckyBalls and eight (8) Large Balls available as Scoring Objects in the game. Most Scoring Objects begin in designated locations on the field, while some are available to be loaded prior to the Match. Each Robot (smaller than 18”x18”x18” to start) begins a match on one of their Alliance Starting Tiles. There are two (2) scoring Zones and (2) Goals that Alliances can Score Objects into. Alliances also earn points for having Robots of their own color Hanging from their Hanging Bar at the end of the Match. A bonus is awarded to the Alliance that has the most total points at the end of the Autonomous Period. Why Sponsor these Teams?
