A sharecropper family takes care of his land and flock of goats. His son and his two grandsons arrive one hot summer’s day for a vacation. They come at a time when Faik’s conflict with the neighbouring nomads is escalating. The gathering provokes both unsettled family disputes and the family’s conflicts with the tenant farmers. For Faik, however, the major threat to his community and land is the nomads. Emin Alper (Konya, 1974) studied economics and history at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. No: 8 Beyoğlu Istanbul T +90 212 249 8006 reiscelik090@gmail.com The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony in rural Anatolia. A middle-aged groom with a large moustache and his bride, covered in a red bridal veil; guests dancing around them and guns fired into the air: an extravagant wedding ceremony is being held with two bands of drums and horns. At the end of the celebrations, which last until midnight, the bride is led ceremoniously to the bridal chamber. The bride and her sister-inlaw are then left alone in the room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on, the camera remains inside the bridal chamber. With her face draped in a red veil, the bride sits waiting for the groom, reacting oddly to the noises she hears outside. Reis Çelik (Ardahan, 1961) studied music and drama at the Istanbul State Conservatoire. In 1982, he began working as an economics and political correspondent for various national newspapers. Inside the coffin is an old woman. On first inspection, it’s reckoned that the woman was buried alive. Behzat Ç., a homicide specialist, has never encountered a murder case like this before. Firstly, it’s incomprehensible why the old woman would be killed in this way. The old woman was the mother of a retired police officer. When he begins investigating the officer, Behzat Ç. finds himself running up against a number of obstacles. The retired officer is known in the organization as ‘Memduh, the Avarell Dalton’, while the person who executed the crime calls himself ‘Lucky Luke’. Along with his teammates Harun, Hayalet and Akbaba, Behzat Ç. scours every corner of Ankara in an attempt to catch the accomplices, Gorbachev Hasan and Pembo. Their intention here is to enjoy life through ecological tourism, organic farming, and arts and culture. With barely a sliver of a plot to hold it together, this stunning collection of awe-inspiring landscapes combines with images of modern intrusions into the heart of nature, all of it backed by brief dialogues and spells of narration, for what would be best described as a litany for a self- destructive age. An ode to nature and an insistent indictment of those who destroy it arbitrarily. Home is an ideal choice for festival exposure, screened at the Adana Film Festival and already on its way to the Tokyo competition next month, this debut shows a keen eye for visuals combined with a toned-down elegiac mood that may not be sufficient for mass audiences, but should draw the attention of art cinemas. Kemal, a university student of around 20, hears news of the fall of ‘socialism’ on a tiny radio in the shambles of his shared student flat. Before his eyes, a world view he has newly espoused, that has shaped his value system, is being destroyed by the people who live within that very system. Despite the debacle unfolding on their doorstep, the revolutionary organization Kemal belongs to continues resolutely with its struggle in universities and labour circles, defying all kinds of police and state oppression. If Kemal’s political struggle is consuming, so too is his emotional world. He nurses a platonic love for Leyla, a political comrade, his feelings so intense that they sometimes overtake his revolutionary duties. When his closest friend and comrade Abidin is killed under police torture, Kemal is recruited to the armed wing of the organization by Pala, the local man in charge. As such, he is now illegal. F. Serkan Acar (Artvin, 1975) started to study Pyschology at Istanbul University in 1992. At the university he wrote film critics and did interviews for cinema magazines. Everything seems normal at first: the couple J and M A are preparing to have another couple, K and D, over for dinner. The guests arrive, a gift is presented and the conversation begins. They talk of this and that, completely normal chit chat. Or so it seems. But we gradually realize that the universe these characters inhabit is disturbingly strange: anything to do with art is taboo, words of hatred and malice are regarded as normal, and when the next-door neighbours are shot down by the police, none of the characters seem surprised. The two couples sit down for dinner and the psychological tension increases all the time, as we understand that there is no hint of friendship or compassion between the four people. Sevda’s biggest accomplishment in life is her marriage to Cezmi. Cezmi is her protector, her safety net, her social and emotional safe haven. The “other woman” Zuhal got divorced a couple of years ago and is now a single mother of a sick, 10-year-old boy. Like all single women, she tries very hard to stand alone, with many things taking up her time and energy. Her office affair with Cezmi isn’t only about an unexpected joy and sexual relief to her life, but it’s more importantly about an expectation of safety. Sevda, going along with her mother’s advice, keeps up the day to day flow of their home-life like clockwork, keeping Cezmi in the dark even while she sets out to find Zuhal using all the fastidiousness being a housewife has taught her. However in a short while she realises that Cezmi’s passion for Zuhal runs deep. With the return of Mustafa, Zuhal’s exhusband, who wishes to win back his wife, the delicate balance between the three of them is completely upset and they are all pulled towards a violent end. 32 Çiğdem Vitrinel (Karabük, 1973) graduated from Anadolu University, Department of Film and Television. The three find themselves up against systemic, institutionalized and culturally embedded homophobia which leads ultimately to the tragic death of Ahmet at the hands of his own father. Through their dynamic friendship and the events that unfold around them, the film explores layers of intolerance along masculine/feminine, east/west and traditional/ modern lines in Istanbul, a city that is itself geographically, culturally and historically at the very crossroads of those divides. One day, Ahmet and Can meet Daniel, a German photojournalist newly arrived in Istanbul who’s working on a coffee-table book about the city. The three of them forge a friendship and Daniel and Ahmet grow even closer as a relationship begins to blossom between them. M. When the system we live in throws up weird and incomprehensible obstacles and regulations, we tend to strive to adapt to the system instead of trying to change it. We strive to survive by creating even more weird and extraordinary solutions. In a way, this attitude is hope for hopelessness, a solution for the insoluble. A character of this nature has always come to be worth telling. As in the logical argument of philosopher St Augustine “Credo quia absurdum” (I believe it because it is absurd), the absurd has the power to be irrefutable and indestructible. The seemingly isolated stories about each character that tell of their lives, needs, goals, and methods in fact take us to the picture of a system that makes people think and do the extraordinary. 40 Atıl İnaç̧ studied philosophy at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and graduated from Boğaziçi University in philosophy.
