Building Blocks 2014 with June Sorensen Building Blocks is a skill building workshop that has students knitting a different 12″ block every month that can be pieced together to create a lovely sampler afghan. The emphasis of this class is EDUCATION. Students are guided through the various stitches and techniques each month as their knitting knowledge is increased. With a different skill focus each month there is something new to learn at each class. Technique Classes Project Classes Perfect Necklines with Darlene Joyce Are you tired of necklines with holes or gaps? Would you like to learn professional ways of shaping a neckline and picking up stitches? Darlene will share all her secrets that she uses to have perfect necklines. Homework required. Socks from the Toe Up (Turkish Toe) with Courtney Buckalew With the yarn of your choice & some basic foot measurements, Courtney will guide you through the basic calculations & techniques for knitting a sock. The Turkish Toe does not use short rows like the German method and many knitters find it easier to execute. Students can opt to use double points or two circular needles. Thurs. January 2 Fee: $32 Tues. January 7 to 21 Fee: $60 2 - 4 p.m. 2 hour class 1 - 3 p.m. 3 week class Correcting Mistakes with Darlene Joyce Are you tired of running into the shop every time the stitches fall off the needle? Come and learn how to correct common mistakes made while knitting. You will learn to pick up dropped stitches in stockinette, garter, and at the end of the row. The class will include exercises in dropping down pattern stitches, picking up dropped stitches, and ripping out rows of knitting and getting stitches back on the needle. Please pick up homework sheet. Lintilla with Darlene Joyce Part of her “Hitchhiker Series”, Martina Belm describes her love of garter stitch and her design, Lantilla. “Most hand-dyed yarns look really fab in it. So I just could not resist to design another little garter stitch shawlette: Lintilla. It comes with a special long and narrow triangular, slightly asymmetrical construction and a beautiful scalloped, subtly ruffled edge that is really fun to make.” Permission was granted from designer to teach this class at MYS. Wed. January 29 Fee: $32 Thurs. January 9 & 23 Fee: $50 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. 2 hour class Choosing the Right Yarn & Blocking with Darlene Joyce Learn how to choose the right yarn for any project. Students will learn how to read yarn labels, how different fibers behave, how to substitute yarns, how to determine yardage needed and how to make a measureable gauge swatch. Students will also learn the basics of blocking, including wet blocking, mist blocking and steam blocking and when to use each technique. Sat. February 1 Fee: $32 1 - 3 p.m. 2 hour class 1 - 3 p.m. 2 week class Cinnie with June Sorensen Whether you like it long or cropped or with short or long sleeves, this cardigan is sure to become a staple in your wardrobe. You can throw it over a simple tee or cami for a casual look or use it as a little “cover up” for a cocktail dress. Chose your favorite dk weight yarn and a size US 6 needle and you are ready to go! Sat. January 18 to February 1 1 - 3 p.m. Fee: $60 3 week class Basic Brioche Stitch Scarf with June Sorensen Learn the basic brioche stitch and begin a scarf. Instruction will include Italian cast on, selvedge edges, basic brioche stitch and Italian cast off. Sun. January 19 Fee: $32 1 - 3 p.m. 2 hour class Color Brioche with June Sorensen Knit a two-color basic brioche stitch scarf with beautiful selvage edges. Only one color is done per row…so this is not a fair isle technique. Must know basic brioche stitch before signing up for class. Sat. February 8 to March 8 Fee: $90 Sun. January 26 Fee: $32 1 - 3 p.m. 2 hour class Tree by Leaf with Courtney Buck alew Courtney designed this flattering wrap after taking a “Gestalt” knitting workshop with Teva Durham. This technique uses the natural edges of the charted pattern. Choose your favorite super bulky yarn and a size 19 needle and knit this wrap just in time for the colder weather. Tues. January 28 to February 4 Fee: $50 1 - 3 p.m. 5 week class Basic Mittens with Emily Hrobsk y Learn how to make basic mittens for any of your loved ones! Emily will walk you through using double pointed needles. Sizing from child small to adult large. This pattern is a great basic for all yarn weights. Wed. February 19 to March 5 7 - 9 p.m. Fee: $60 3 week class 1 - 3 p.m. 2 week class Super Bowl Party! Sunday, February 2, 12 - 4 p.m. Felted Clogs with June Sorensen Learn how to make this customer favorite slipper. Using two strands of Lamb’s Pride and a size 10 1/2 circular needle, these clogs come in many sizes. Students will learn short row shaping, three needle bind off and machine felting. Thurs. February 6 to 20 Fee: $60 Aran from the Neck Down with Darlene Joyce (Cardigan or Pullover-Designed to Fit You) Janet Szabo graciously gave us permission to use her KAL notes to teach this class. Students will learn to knit a completely seamless pullover or cardigan from the neck down. Experience with cables required. Homework required. Pattern is available at MYS for $8. Football, whatever. Apparently, tons of you feel the same way. Crochet Classes Beginning/ Intermediate Crochet with M Y S Staff This class is for crocheters of any skill level. It is tailored around what you know and what you'd like to learn. If you're new to crochet, you'll get started with chain, single, and double crochet stitches. Already know the basics? Then learn to read patterns and stitch diagrams. If you want to learn classics like granny squares, doilies, motifs, or filet crochet, only your imagination is the limit! Come prepared with a project of your choosing, and let's get started. Thurs. Techniques include basic Tunisian stitches and reading of charts. Some experience with Tunisian is very helpful. Sat. January 11 & 25 Fee: $50 1 - 3 p.m. 2 week class The Lunch Bunch Group! Wednesdays, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. You gotta eat! You gotta knit/crochet! Everyone is welcome:) Frostyflakes Scarf with Darlene Joyce Crochet Vashti’s Braha’s Frostyflakes for a perfect accent piece. Darlene chose a silk dk weight yaran for it’s beautiful drape and some size 6 seed beads for the edging. We have some beads in stock for your convenience. This project is a lot of fun! Wed. January 22 Fee: $32 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. 2 hour class Pretty in Pink with Darlene Joyce Learn how to follow a crochet diagram and make this beautiful poncho. It can be worn with the point in front or on the side. Darlene made one in cotton for warm weather and one in mohair for cool weather. Wed. February 12 & 19 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $50 2 week class Finishing Clinic The Knitting Doctor is in! $10/one hour clinic Bring your knitted pieces, a tapestry needle, split ring markers, a tape measure and learn to sew your sweaters together! Saturdays, 9 - 10 a.m. (No Clinic January 4 & 18) Registration 24 hours before clinic start time required. Coming in March/April My First Sweater with Darlene Joyce Use Ann Budd’s book, The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns and the yarn of your choice to make a basic pullover sweater or cardigan in any size. The set-in-sleeve is flattering to almost all body types. Couture techniques are taught to refine your knitting repertoire. In order to allow for knitting time, this class meets every other week. Sat. Come in as soon as possible to pick out your supplies in case we need to order something. Students receive a 10% discount on all class materials! Please come to class with any gadgets you might need! Of course, you can always register in person! Minimum: A minimum of three students is required in order for a class to run. You will be notified one week in advance if the minimum is not met and your deposit will be refunded. Balance: The balance for class fees is due on the fir st day of class.
