Greetings From Your Chairman of the Board
JULY 2016 Mission: To promote, support, and enhance business prosperity, civic vitality, and quality of life. Greetings From Your Chairman of the Board Inside this Edition: Chairman Welcome Business Expo Ribbon Cuttings Palm Desert Blood Drive HR California Calendar of Events and More It is with great enthusi- asm that I assume the role of the Palm Desert Area Chamber Chairman of the Board. Having served on the Board of Directors in various capacities over the past four years, I have been privileged to work with the extremely talented Chamber staff and dynamic group of professionals who comprise the Board of of Directors. I will continue executing and building upon the goals and objectives our past Chairwoman Linda Long so capably outlined and initiated at the beginning of fiscal year 2015. I would like to say a special thank you to all who were in attendance and support for the recent 2016 Business Awards at Agua Caliente. It was a true pleasure to see so many gather together to celebrate the accomplishments of our members in the business community. As summer brings vacations, barbeques and recreation, there are a number of exciting up- coming Palm Desert Area Chamber events. On July 20th I invite you to join us for our Business After Hours Mixer at PIRCH. We have partnered with our friends to the west - Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City Chambers of Commerce to make this a mixer you won’t soon forget. Networking at its best with phenomenal food, adult beverages, and an atmosphere like no other. August and September may be hot, but the PDACC staff will not be taking a break from the heat. They will be “on fire” prepping for our upContinued on page 11 SAVE THE DATE - The Valley's Largest Business Expo, Contact Us 72559 Hwy 111 Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.346.6111 the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce Expo is coming this fall. Although the Act establishes minimum requirements, employers have the option to provide more time off than the minimum required under the Act. Some cities have also taken on the issue of Paid Sick Leave (PSL). For example, the cities of San Diego and Los Angeles recently enacted new PSL ordinances that are effective this July, and these ordinances contain different provisions than the statewide PSL law. Other jurisdictions, such as San Francisco, Oakland and Emeryville, have had PSL ordinances on the books for a while. If you have employees working in a city with a local PSL ordinance, you will need to comply with both the state and the local law. Eligibility for PSL may vary from city to city. For each provision, protection or benefit, employers will need to provide employees whichever is more generous to the employee. For example, under state law, no matter how much PSL an employee has accrued in his/her leave bank, an employer can limit the employee’s use of accrued PSL to three days or 24 hours per year. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to anticipate every possible scenario that California employers might be presented with when trying to make sure their own customized policies comply with local and state PSL laws. Keep in mind that if you are a national company, PSL laws outside of California also may apply to you. Best Practices • Check if any local ordinances may affect how you pay, provide benefits to or otherwise treat your employees. • If you have employees working in a city with a local PSL ordinance, review your existing policies to make sure they comply. • Consult legal counsel to develop a plan for complying with PSL laws in other localities. Ask Howard Gordon, New York native, who parlayed a finance degree from Belknap College into a successful career in investments, securities and commercial real estate. In 2014, while looking for a business to purchase in the Coachella Valley, Howard “almost bought an existing franchise unit before deciding it best to start from scratch and build a higher quality organization”. The Result is Coachella Valley Home Care, non-medical inhome care for seniors and those in need of recuperative care. With shared values of Compassion, Honesty, Respect, and Patience, Coachella Valley Home Care team members and caregivers are chosen for their background and experience with in-home nursing and care giving, and are given a thorough background check and screening process, as well as the highest quality in-home caregiver training. Perhaps that’s the key to Howard’s success: start from scratch, live your life by the Golden Rule with integrity and generosity, and give of oneself. Howard, who claims to be “quite shy, reflective, thoughtful”, is also a board member of All Things are Possible (working with special needs children through music and motion therapy), and a member of CAHSAH, Act 1, Rotary, and Incight. Mark your calendar, ask your neighbors to do the same, and show your community spirit by giving blood on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center. Your donation will support your community and could save a life. After placing first in 2014 with 138 donated units of blood, Palm Desert fell to fifth place last year. We hope to reclaim the champion title this year and once again be number one in life saving donations. Donors must be at least 15 years of age (ages 15-16 need a signed parental consent form), be in general good health, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. All donors will receive a free, single-day admission ticket ($38.99 value) to Wet ‘n’ Wild Palm Springs, valid through the 2016 season. The Community Center is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue adjacent to Civic Center Park. For more information and to make an appointment, please call LifeStream at 800-879-4484 or www.LStream.org. Someone Filed a Tax Return Using Written by: Pedro T. Rincon, My Identity! What Do I Do? CPA, CVA In many cases, when someone files a tax return using your Social Security number, you won’t find out until after the second return is filed. The second return could be from you or the person who has stolen your information. When the IRS receives two different returns with the same Social Security number, the second return filed will be rejected. IRS Form 14039 When you discover another a tax return has been filed with your Social Security number, you’ll use IRS Form 14039 to alert the IRS. When you complete this form, you’ll indicate that someone has stolen your identity and it has affected your tax account since they have filed a return using your identifying information. You’ll also provide information about the tax year affected and the last return you filed prior to the identity theft. Additional precautions When someone has enough of your personal information to file a fraudulent tax return, they can use your identity to commit other crimes.
