2015 ANNUAL REPORT THE FACES OF @ 25 WHO GETS TO GRADUATE COLLEGE? Anyssa Chebbi Princeton University, Class of 2018 Breakthrough Miami Alum, 2015 Teaching Fellow SHANAVA SAINTOLIEN • GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLAR • FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 2019 • MAJOR: BIOLOGY / FSU TEACH • BREAKTHROUGH ALUM • 2015 TEACHING FELLOW “My mentor was always there if I needed help with college apps, essays or just to talk about stress at school. Breakthrough Miami is honestly why I am who I am and I do what I do. If not for Breakthrough, I do not think that I would have had the courage to …ignore the constant negatives thrown at me by other people… the fact that my parents came from Haiti, I’m African-American and female.” CONVENTIONAL WISDOM SAYS: ANY STUDENT WILLING TO WORK HARD. THE TRUTH: Students from low-income backgrounds face a daunting challenge. Nationally, just 22% enroll in 4-year colleges and universities and just 14% graduate with degrees. Even high-achievers graduate at half the rate of more affluent peers. At Breakthrough Miami, we say “no way.” Here, motivated students learn how to break through the racial, cultural and economic barriers to a college education…so they can realize their most ambitious goals in life. At Breakthrough Miami, 92% of the Class of 2015 enrolled in 4-year college and universities. WHAT IS BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI? An 8-year, tuition-free enrichment program that features a 6-week Summer Institute and school-year Saturdays of rigorous academics, stimulating electives, athletics, mentoring and fun, led by outstanding high-school seniors and college students who serve as teachers, mentors and role models. WHO IS BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI? • Nearly 1,200 Scholars from under-resourced communities across Miami-Dade • 96 outstanding high-school and college Teaching Fellows • And hundreds of visionaries — donors, volunteers, educational leaders and families — who want to close the gap in educational opportunity for the next generation. Together, we have been changing the story in Miami-Dade County for 25 years. . . Because any student willing to work hard really DOES deserve a college degree. Here is our 2015 Annual Report and a look at The Faces of Breakthrough Miami @25. BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI’S MISSION... To provide an academic enrichment program that uses a students-teaching-students model to ensure that motivated, under-resourced middle-school students have access to excellent high-school opportunities, graduate on time and attend college. 2 @ 25 BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI BREAKTHROUGHMIAMI.ORG | 3 WHO IS A SCHOLAR? It challenged me to go beyond measure, to reach out, to not be afraid to ask for help. When I could not get it in school, I expected to learn it in Breakthrough.” PRIYA MAHABIR • 7TH GRADE • HAMMOCKS MIDDLE SCHOOL AKEEM ANGLIN • MIAMI DADE HONORS COLLEGE • MAJOR: FINANCE AND COMPUTER SCIENCE • BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI ALUM AND VOLUNTEER “Breakthrough puts college in your mind as a middle school student. She’s aiming for a career in law, as a prosecutor and a judge. “I don’t think I would be where I am right now,” without Breakthrough’s AmeriCorps mentors, in particular. “They are helping us so much, giving us inspiration to dream and achieve… It’s the best thing to have.” @ 25 BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI KATERINA SANCHEZ • CORAL REEF SENIOR HIGH • CLASS OF 2016 •PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: CREATED A NON - PROFIT CALLED WORDS OF WISDOM “Thanks to Breakthrough’s partnership with Ashoka Youth Ventures, I was fortunate enough to begin my non-profit, which helps underprivileged children who might not get the right education and help at school or at home” to get homework help from volunteers at community centers. “It’s wonderful to say you have possibly helped someone’s life for the better.” CACHAY BYRD 11TH GRADE • CARROLLTON SCHOOL OF THE SACRED HEART • WANTS TO STUDY CHINESE AND PRE-MED Cachay joined the program as a 6th grader, and, with the help of Breakthrough, entered Carrollton a year later. She enjoys reading and writing and studies Chinese. She also loves singing in her church choir. Through dedication of her mother, the whole family has been set on an upward trajectory. Breakthrough helped Cachay get an internship at Mercy Hospital’s maternity ward, fueling her ambition to become a neonatal surgeon. “At Breakthrough, you’re not another number, you are YOU! Breakthrough has a careful and precise way of singling out every child’s weakness, strengthening it by tailoring their summer and nurturing their success, placing them in environments that suit their needs and dreams.” ADRIAN ALMANZA • 8TH GRADE • SOUTH DADE MIDDLE SCHOOL • WANTS TO BE A MUSIC PRODUCER, WRITER AND ARTIST Adrian lives in Florida City and learned about Breakthrough from the migrant program he’s involved in. “People who come here who are underprivileged can advance in school, get ideas for scholarships… . . .There’s something about me. I like being the leader and making my own choices. I want to make a better future and be one of the people who can help my family.” MHARLOVE ANDRE •WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY AT ST. LOUIS, CLASS OF 2018 •MAJOR: CHEMISTRY, PRE-MED •MIAMI COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL •BREAKTHROUGH ALUM, 2015 TEACHING FELLOW “One of the Breakthrough teachers in my second summer attended Washington U, and it became my dream school. My biggest obstacle was overcoming feelings of mediocrity. Over time, my classmates saw me more as “the smart girl” rather than “the black poor girl.” Because of that, I have the confidence to overcome any obstacles that come my way. At some point, I would like to open a school for students like Breakthrough Scholars, who have a passion for learning but just have difficult circumstances.” BREAKTHROUGHMIAMI.ORG | 7 A COMMUNITY WITH VISION BOARD OF DIRECTORS Breakthrough Miami Donors | Fiscal Year 2015 (10/1/2014 to 9/30/2015) PLATINUM $100,000+ ANSIN FAMILY FOUNDATION | BATCHELOR FOUNDATION | HECKSCHER FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN | MICHELE & DON SOFFER | JEFF MILLER/MILLER FAMILY FOUNDATION | STUART MILLER | THE CHILDREN’S TRUST | THE CONSEQUENCES CHARITY | VOLUNTEER FLORIDA FOUNDER $50,000+ BRAMAN FAMILY FOUNDATION | CARNIVAL CORPORATION | FINE & GREENWALD FOUNDATION | GIVE MIAMI DAY/MIAMI FOUNDATION | MIAMI BAYSIDE FOUNDATION | PEACOCK FOUNDATION | THE LAMPERT FOUNDATION DREAMBUILDER $20,000+ DADE PAPER COMPANY | JPMORGAN CHASE & CO | LENNAR | MARIVI & DARIUS NEVIN | MIAMI FOUNDATION | TRIMIX FOUNDATION/GAIL MIXER | TUUCI/MARTHA & DOUGAN CLARKE MENTOR $10,000+ BANK OF AMERICA FOUNDATION | JULIANNE & DEREK MCDOWELL | KERIN & ANDREW FREDMAN | KIM & KEVIN SMITH LENNAR FOUNDATION | MIGUEL CABRERA FOUNDATION | MONICA & JAMES GOLDSMITH | PUBLIX SUPERMARKET CHARITIES | ROSE ELLEN GREENE | ST. Growing up in my neighborhood, there weren’t a lot of positive things to look at. Breakthrough was that positive light for me. I was a pretty shy kid and presenting was a struggle for me. The original program model provided summer enrichment for middle-school students from low-performing schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods, with the goal of preparing them to enter college-prep high schools and enroll in college. Summerbridge Miami was launched at Ransom Everglades School in 1991 with 40 students. Over the years, school-year Saturdays programs and college-access readiness services for high school students were added. In 2007, the program, rebranded as Breakthrough Miami, received nearly $5 million in funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Children’s Trust, to expand to new sites. Breakthrough Miami’s five sites currently serve nearly 1,200 students attending more than 100 schools across Miami-Dade County, from Miami Gardens to Homestead, from Liberty City to Hialeah. 10 @ 25 BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI BREAKTHROUGHMIAMI.ORG | 11 BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI SCHOLAR AFFIRMATION STATEMENT I am a Breakthrough Miami Scholar.
