What a great day for a cruise! A warm September Saturday with
plenty of sunshine and cobra enthusiasts ready for some fun. Eastside cruisers met at the Ethan Allen on Baldwin Rd. and I-75 at
noon. Rick and Carol Kacel led us through a beautiful drive on the
back roads covering small towns like Metamora and Hadley (which
happened to be having their Fall Festival Days when we paraded
through). The West-siders had traveled from Lee and US 23 and we
all met up at the corner of M83 and M54. The “East-siders” definitely outnumbered the “West-siders” (where were you guys?).

The group met at “the diner” on M54 south of Frankenmuth where
we stopped to catch up with each other and get some pictures. We
drew an awful lot of attention at that stop; unfortunately for
some….the attention from “gawkers” caused a three car pile up on
M54 in front of the diner where we were parked. The police were on
the scene in minutes and the cobras were on our way to finish the
drive to Frankenmuth.

OCTOBER 17TH - GLCC MEETING NOTES
I. Meeting was called to order at Logan’s Roadhouse at 7:05 p.m. by Dave Swanson –
18 members in attendance.
II. Introduction of Board members

No new members in attendance; Linda Rennie and Karen Anway not in attendance.
III. September 2006 minutes recently posted in newsletter no questions.

October minutes taken by Janet Ross.
IV. Treasurer’s Report Dave Courter - balance in the account is $3,608.92 including with
all bills paid.
V. Cruise and Special Event Committee Report given by Terry Anway.

Holiday Party – Remaining event for 2006 is the Holiday Party on Saturday, December 2nd. A private room is reserved, deposit paid, at Maggiano’s Little Italy on
Big Beaver in Troy (same location as past two years). $45 per person with full
course meal, all you can eat, included. A sign-up sheet was passed around. Cutoff date is the week before the dinner.
VI. Membership Committee: 116 active members, two new members but haven’t sent in
dues.
VII.Merchandise / Apparel: New merchandise will be on the website before long.
VIII.Newsletter: Closing date November 1, 2006. Articles are needed.


DETROIT AUTORAMA SPOTLIGHT
Ron Nelson’s First Strike Cobra

Some people know what they want from the get-go, while others sometimes languish in
their decisions. Ron Nelson from Burton, Michigan, knew he wanted to build a Cobra
roadster, but he bounced back and forth between several manufacturers before making
an educated choice about which one he’d like to build.
It wasn’t until he followed the advice from a friend in the Great Lakes Cobra Club that
he checked out an Everett-Morrison built by Ken Seybert at CVR Automotive (you might
remember Seybert built the dark blue FFR Daytona in the Mar. ’06 issue of KIT CAR.)
Ron, years ago a car painter by trade, had given his vocation a rest in recent years, but
that didn’t mean he’d lost his touch. And when he checked out the roughed-out Cobra at
Seybert’s shop, he didn’t find anything rough at all--he felt he’d have this car blocked,
primed, and painted in no time!
Ron, who has attended the Detroit AutoRama for years, ran into Murray Pfaff of Pfaff
Designs at Cobo Hall in ’05 and asked him about designing a paint scheme that would be
striking yet different from what you’d normally find out there. Pfaff came up with a unique
tri-color band that would accentuate the car’s roundness but still give it enough of an aggressive edge to make it look appealing. Once the paint scheme was figured out, Ron
new he needed to start on his project.

WELCOME JOYCE AND PATRICK BURGER
"It’s always been my dream car," said Patrick Burger when asked what motivated him to purchase a Cobra. He has had other toys - a boat and a motorcycle - but got rid of them when life
circumstances changed. He owed a ’65 Corvette coupe several years ago but lost interest after two years. At that time he and his wife Joyce had two small children and the ‘Vette was just
not suited to a young family of four.
Lifelong Dearborn residents, Joyce and Patrick are new members of the Great Lakes Cobra
Club and have been actively attending meetings. They attended their first club meeting in May
and are looking forward to meeting more members and joining in club activities. They spotted
the classic red and white Cobra during the 2005 Dream Cruise when driving on Woodward.
They came back to take a look and made a purchase. Their Cobra has a 302 Ford motor and
C4 automatic transmission. It was built by John Rennie and is a sister car to Linda Rennie’s.
Marty and Lisa Grenier directed the Burger’s to the GLCC. Patrick is excited by the mechanical
and engine work Terry Anway is currently doing on the car. Terry is also powder coating the car
- this may be a first for the club. They are considering buying a hard top so they will be comfortable driving in the rain.
Patrick is a tool and die maker; retired from Ford Motor Company. Joyce is a homemaker.
The couple has two adult children and three grandkids. One family lives in Dearborn and the
other in Garden City making it convenient for the family to get together often. This year the
Burger’s are celebrating 40 years of marriage. Who would have guessed that the 18 year old
working in the grocery store, eyeing the cute 15 year old gal who came in with her father would
spend their life together? Obviously they have made their marriage a priority.
When not enjoying a ride in their Cobra (they put on 2,000 miles since purchasing the car after last year’s Dream Cruise before Spring 2006 even arrived), Joyce and Patrick like to play
cards, go out with friends, serve their church and watch the Speed Channel. They love how
the Cobra makes them feel young. Patrick says it’s fun to get the stares and the thumbs up
from passersby. Joyce says, "I love it! Even young kids give us looks and ask questions." The
Burgers plan to drive their dream car a lot.

Once we arrived in Frankenmuth, with reservations made by Kelly, we were escorted past the
long lines and right to our tables at Zender’s for their famous Chicken spread. We were also
greeted by the annual art fair in Frankenmuth which proved to be a popular shopping stop
after lunch for many cruisers.
What a wonderful day! Thank-you Frank & Kelly for continuing to sponsor this end of year
cruise.
For all you “West-siders” who “chickened” out; the challenge is on for the 8th annual cruise in
September 2007. Are you going to let the “East-siders” outnumber you again?

Ron built a backyard shop for the car’s assembly, and now that he’d gotten to know
Seybert, he worked out a schedule with him to get the job done. The chassis, with its IFS
setup and Lincoln IRS out back, went together smoothly. It wasn’t until some of the body
modifications that Nelson wasn’t convinced he should cut into his Cobra body. But design
won out, so items such as the driving lights were tunneled into the body, and special oneoff parts were made. That done, Nelson painted the car following Pfaff’s layout, and the
result was striking without being overbearing.
Since Ron didn’t want the added headache of building an engine himself, he had a 418
Ford stroker engine built for the project, backing it to a Tremec TKO five-speed trans. Soon
the project was finished, just in time for the 2006 Detroit AutoRama (where it won First in
the Hand built Sports Class as well as a KIT CAR Magazine Editor’s Choice award), where
these photographs were taken.
The car is so new Ron hasn’t driven it much, but he plans to do so soon. But driving the
cars isn’t what really gets Nelson going--it’s the build itself (a concept shared by many KIT
CAR readers). The build of this car (and working with Seybert) turned out so well that the
two have decided to work together again on future projects, too, with Seybert building and
Nelson painting (under his new business name, Hollow-point Paintworks). You can catch

interesting going on there. As for Nelson, he’s ready to build another one! KC
