Publications reached an all-year high in May (2,411 in that month alone!). Such a strong media presence resulted from the press coverage of the Science Picnic (576) and numerous accounts of visits to the CSC published on social-networking websites (217), possibly linked to attendance at the event. The second highest result, reported in September, is attributable to discussions on the date of opening a new metro line to the public, including a station bearing the name of the Centre (496 publications) and, to a lesser degree, reports about the Przemiany Festival (191). Copernicus Science Centre: Presence in Publications in 2014 3 000 2,411 2 500 1,957 1,721 2 000 1,313 1,463 1,543 1,317 1,091 2,023 1,658 1,676 1,446 1 500 1 000 500 0 01.2014 02.2014 03.2014 04.2014 05.2014 06.2014 07.2014 08.2014 09.2014 10.2014 11.2014 12.2014 The year 2014 therefore appears to have been very successful in terms of the CSC presence in the media; nevertheless, such quantitative data should be treated with a certain amount of caution. Differences between the year 2014 and previous years may have been caused by the change in the media monitoring agency used (bringing a more sensitive system) and also by the addition of social media data, which impacted significantly on the amount of information. Consequently, the figures for 2014 include a greater number of identified publications. We should note that have no knowledge of what the findings for the years 2010-2013 would have looked like if a similar methodology had been employed. 1 COPERNICUS MEDIA PRESENCE: SUMMARY OF DATA FOR 2014 CSC Presence in Publications: 2010-2014 3000 2500 2,382 2000 2,015 1,925 1,699 1500 1,313 1,440 1,530 1,317 1000 500 736 516 767 753 215 813 737 287 1,444 1,121 1,058 1,146 1,069 1,069 825 1,128 948 728 531 243 320 209 209 267 0 2010 1,661 1,411 842 600 475 333 1,622 2011 2012 2013 668 1,180 752 414 129 644 552 185 2014 Moreover, it is worth looking at the breakdown between all publications mentioning the name “Copernicus Science Centre” in any context, and those publications pertaining to the Centre’s activity per se. Media publications devoted directly to the CSC’s activity account for 21% of all publications, a share similar to that reported in previous years. Interestingly, this share remains relatively constant throughout the year, which is visible in a near symmetrical shift between the trend lines in the graph. One exception was September (publications devoted to the new metro line stations). CSC Media Presence in 2014: Relation Between All Publications and Publications Devoted Directly to CSC Activity 3000 2500 2000 1500 1000 500 0 2014: all publications 2014: publications devoted directly to CSC 2 COPERNICUS MEDIA PRESENCE: SUMMARY OF DATA FOR 2014 BREAKDOWN OF MEDIA ACTIVITY Internet portals account for the largest share of publications devoted to the CSC. Importantly, this channel for disseminating information is characterized by the lowest share of publications devoted directly to the Centre’s activity. Publications in 2014 by Media Outlet Press Internet Blogs Forums Radio TV 0 1000 2000 3000 4000 5000 6000 7000 8000 9000 It is worth noting growing activity in Facebook communications. These are predominantly mentions of a personal nature (I’m standing in front of the Copernicus Centre); nevertheless, their growing intensity is significant. However, this does not mean that they account for the largest share of publications devoted to the Centre’s activity per se. For instance, publications by the journalist Dariusz Bartoszewicz mention the Centre in the context of Warsaw’s development, e.g. the extension of the metro system. 3 COPERNICUS MEDIA PRESENCE: SUMMARY OF DATA FOR 2014 CSC 2014: Most Active Authors Copernicus Science Centre Warsaw Krzysztof Śmietana Dariusz Bartoszewicz 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 PRESS: QUANTITATIVE DATA The quantitative share of the press in communications devoted to the CSC is relatively low. We can attribute the October peak to reports on the exhibition “Captured Mind” in local media outlets. Nonetheless, we must bear in mind that the overall number of articles also includes the aforementioned publications devoted to the metro system, other urban issues, etc. 4 COPERNICUS MEDIA PRESENCE: SUMMARY OF DATA FOR 2014 CSC 2014: Most Active Press Sources Kurier Poranny Metro Warszawa Super Express Warszawa Gazeta Wyborcza Gazeta Wyborcza Stołeczna 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 A similar situation can be observed in the ranking of authors: it is topped by journalists engaged in coverage of urban issues, who mention the CSC chiefly in the context of urban investments, not the Centre’s activities per se. We can observe the highest results in May, obviously thanks to the Science Picnic. However, it is worth noting that traditional radio accounts for 119 out of 723 publications devoted to the event in that period, which works out to around 16% of all publications. For that reason, the leaders here are the Science Picnic of the Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre and FameLab, both of which also topped the list in 2013. Interestingly, the exhibition “Captured Mind” ranked high thanks to its strong presence in local media outlets: it was featured in as many as 411 publications! Analysis of press materials shows a clear change in the status of publications, which include in particular short notes and mentions, while whole articles or separate programs are significantly less frequent. As in previous years, there is little information about individuals who might help create a more personal relationship between the CSC and what it has to offer and its audience. We will address this issue in a separate report. 10 COPERNICUS MEDIA PRESENCE: SUMMARY OF DATA FOR 2014
