Here comes one week completely dedicated to Brazilian Cinema!
For its third edition, the Festival du Film Brésilien de Montréal is very happy to unfold, once again, an original
and exciting panorama of the best Brazilian cinema. On the top of that, the festival presents an attractive and
challenging selection of feature films or documentaries since they have all received awards in prestigious
th
international festivals and most of them haven’t been shown in Quebec. For 7 days, from November 27 to
rd
December 3 , the festival invites you for some genuine Brazilian warmth at the cinema.
For more than 500 years, Brazil has been melting cultures, skin colors, races, traditions, tastes, flavors, histories
and everything else into a very large and welcoming pot.
Brazil and Canada have actually more in common than you can imagine! They are both relatively young nations
where immigration played -- and still plays! -- a very important role. Did you know that Brazil has the highest
population of people of African descent outside the African continent? And there was also a time when there
were more people speaking Italian on the streets of São Paulo than Portuguese, the official Brazilian language.
Everywhere as in Montreal, you can feel, see, hear and taste this same multicultural atmosphere. You can sit in
an Indian restaurant in the heart of the Italian area, reading a European newspaper and overhearing
conversations in three or four different languages at the same time...

A university student decides to break-up with her boyfriend and run away to
an undisclosed location. But before leaving, she meets him one last time.
They walk around campus and take their last moments together to analyze
the ups and downs of their relationship. In so doing, they reminisce, discuss,
and ruminate on the fears and concerns of their generation.
Written and produced while he was still at university, twenty-one year old
Matheus Souza has made a refreshing and deeply sympathetic debut,
benefitting from improvised humorous dialogue and numerous pop cultural
references.

This multi-awarded movie is inspired by legendary real life character João
Francisco dos Santos, also known as Madame Satã – a glittering cross-dressing
singer with a remarkable talent to enter the skin of many different characters. Set
in the 1930s, in the bohemian neighborhood Lapa, home to pimps, prostitutes,
thieves and misfits of every stripe, the film is an intimate journey of a man who
challenged the multiple stigmas of being illiterate, black, poor, and gay in quest of
a dream: to become a stage star.

Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner in 1959, Black Orpheus, is a vibrant
masterpiece from French director Marcel Camus. The Greek
tragedy Orpheus and Eurydice is baldly transposed in Rio’s
shantytowns (favelas), on the day before the carnival kicks off.
An intense and emotional movie whose classic story still finds a
profound echo centuries later in this completely different location.
Musically, the soundtrack is also notable for its soon-to-be bossa
nova classics such as Manhã de Carnaval or A Felicidade.

Leo is a journalist with financial problems living with his depressed flatmate
Ângela, the mother of a small boy. After meeting transvestite Marcin and cab
driver Wilson, the four decide that with nothing else working out, their only option
is to plan a heist.
Strikingly shot, Belmonte’s inimitable film is imbued with the frantic nature of those
struggling to get as hold on life in the city.

A host of personalities including Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil,
and Lenine reminisce about the life and work of songwriter, lawyer, and
congress man Humberto Teixeira -aka "Baião Doctor"- the author of such
classic Brazilian popular songs as Asa Branca (White Wing). Baião is a
rhythm from the Northeast of the country, that moved south, then took the
entire country by storm, before spreading its magic around the world. This
beautifully produced film brilliantly captures the feel of Brazilian life in the
1940s with musical performances, archival footage, and priceless
testimonials.

For over 15 years, Ana Jobim gathered 3000 images and 8 hours of
footage that illustrate the love story between her and her husband Tom
Jobim, musician, and father of Bossa Nova. Narrated by Ana Jobim
herself, the story is structured around a poem Chapadão that Jobim
took eight years to finish completing. Full of exceptional moments of
Jobim's life, the film is an intimate portrait of a husband and father who
also led an extraordinary public life as a musician and creator of some
of the greatest standards of Brazilian music.

This documentary explores the everyday life of the members of Velha
Guarda da Portela, the legendary group of samba school players
holding the record for the most titles won in Rio carnival - and how this
life becomes the inspiration for their beautiful songs. Guided by
contemporary singer-songwriter Marisa Monte, who interviews many of
the musicians, the film also delves into Velha Guarda's history. A must
see for all music lovers with special appearances by contemporary
stars Paulinho da Viola and Zeca Pagodinho.

Adriana Calcanhotto, Arnaldo Antunes, Chico Buarque, Lenine,

player of the 20th century are featured in 71 minutes. This film traces
highlights of Pelé's career in the World Cups of 1958 (Sweden), 1962
(Chile), 1966 (England), 1970 (Mexico) and includes over 100 of his
memorable goals. A documentary as exciting as the matches that thrilled
his fans and a must-see for those who never saw him play, a tribute to the
immense impact he has made on the game of soccer.

A documentary on the life and work of French photographer
and ethnographer Pierre Verger, who after traveling the world,
settled in Salvador, Bahia in the Northeast of Brazil, in 1946.
There he studied the relationship and mutual cultural influences
between Brazil and Africa. The film is narrated and presented
by internationally renowned Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil,
includes an interview with Verger filmed a day before his
passing, and testimonials by Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado
and historian Cid Teixeira.
