speak l n g humanely fall 2013 In This Issue: The Human-Animal bond Also Inside: • Mosey, SPEAK! success • Meet Your Match • SCRATCHING POST - FOR KIDS! • The Feral Fix • Grab a new Hot Dogs calendar • Home for the Holidays • News & Events From the CEO Cultivating the human-animal bond By Maureen O’Nell/CEO The deep connection between humans and animals is undeniable and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona takes pride in nurturing these relationships. The pets at the HSSA are temporary visitors, and keeping them enriched and social is imperative. In the midst of helping animals, we never lose sight of how they, in return, help us in our lives every day. To cultivate the human-animal bond throughout the community, the HSSA has designed programs such as volunteer dog walkers, Pet VIPs, Hand-In -Paw Kids Club and Canine College, each with a different approach in reinforcing the bond. In particular, the Pet VIP Program is meant to share our pets with others. Anyone of any age, typically people in hospitals, hospices, children’s facilities, mental health facilities and schools are great candidates for visits from our Pet VIPs. Take for example, Alex.* He is in third grade and is a foster child waiting to find his forever home. Not too long ago he was so close to finding a permanent placement with a family he could call his own, until he found out there was a dog. Out of fear, Alex refused to live with the family. In hopes of acclimating Alex to dogs and cats, one of our Pet VIPs, Shilo Sanchez, and her pup, Gunner, took on the challenge of meeting Alex in hopes of getting him comfortable around pets again. At the initial meeting, Alex and Gunner became instant friends and really took a liking to one another. In the process, it helped to diminish much @ 2 Pet VIP team Shilo Sanchez and Gunner (right). Alex spends some time getting to know Gunner to improve his chances of finding his forever home. of Alex’s previous fears he had for dogs. “Gunner is super soft and nice! I like him. I want to take him with me,” said Alex. After hand feeding Gunner Cheerios and walking him around the park, the play date came to an end. Alex walked away from the meeting more confident about dogs and in himself. He is now scheduled to take the next step and meet with a variety of VIP dogs. Moments like this are what volunteers like Shilo and the HSSA live for, especially when we can reinforce a connection between children and pets. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona has 91 pet/people teams that visit more than 90 local facilities each month, bringing 1,000-plus hours of canine love to patients in need and 3,580 hours since the beginning of 2013! It is a special thing to witness the emotional and psychological benefits of animals and their love of people. In the end it is our hope that every person and pet has a place to call home. Through these programs the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is able to do more than shelter pets in need. The HSSA is able to reach out to many people who need kindness that only pets can provide. *Name has been changed to ensure privacy. Would you prefer to receive this newsletter electronically? Every day, Aug. 26-30, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona joined The Morning Blend on KGUN-9 to share our stories and raise funds to help the more than 20,000 animals we reach each year. SPEAK! for Animals was the first telethon for the HSSA in five years – and it was a smashing success! Thanks to our amazing supporters, we raised more than $26,000! Over the five days we told our viewers about everything the HSSA does from adoptions to our Thrift Store, from spay/neuter services and low-cost vaccinations to our community-wide educational outreach programs. A big thank you to our sponsors Alexander/Carrillo Consulting; Camp Bow Wow; GEICO; Long Realty Cares Foundation; Premier Auto Center; Take a Paws Massage and Shannon Sullivan, LMT; and Tony Poe Mortgage Group Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. for their support in helping the HSSA surpass its goal! © 2013 Humane Society of Southern Arizona; all rights reserved. Abrams - Executive Committee Member-At-Large Feedback I have a 4-year-old Maine Coon named Moose. I kept them separate for about a week; Lily in the bathroom with food and her box. She has done so well, at first not happy about sharing my attention but has accepted being a part of a home with two cats. They play and run around chasing each other all the time, they flop on the living room floor in front of the TV, and Lily has figured out Moose’s favorite places to nap and steals that spot whenever she can. She sleeps at the foot of the bed every night. She is doing very well overall. Board Members Kayla Boyer, D.V.M. James Boulay, D.V.M. Ellen Grygotis, D.V.M. Chantal McCaman Jordan S. Simon Bruce L. Skolnik Tom Spendiarian Holly Tripp Lora K. White Maureen O’Nell - CEO Interested in becoming an HSSA volunteer? Four-legged blessing We adopted Nessie from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona at Park Place. At the time of adoption her name was “Poco,” but she did not exactly answer to it very well at first. We changed her name and she does well with us. This picture was taken on our way down from Mt. Lemmon – she was worn out from chasing lizards, birds and squirrels, along with all the walking she did! She loves when her “cousins” (our nieces) come to visit and play with her, especially when they bring her new treats or toys! She has been a blessing of an addition to our family! - Sincerely grateful, Veronica Barcelo We think that’s a great idea! The HSSA could not exist without the hard work of its volunteers. Questions? Please Contact our Volunteer Department at 321-3704, ext. 126, or volunteer@hssaz.org. Frisky settles in I adopted Frisky and he is doing very well. He is growing and wants to eat my food. He loves to play, especially when I start cleaning. Here is a picture of him and he loves kids. - Reina A kitten’s tale The first step is to attend an open house, where you will learn about opportunities! Check our website at hssaz.org/volunteer for open house dates and times. - Thanks for Lily, Susan Rosewood Solo cat finds new friend I adopted Lily, a 4-year-old calico that had been through two different homes over the last four years. She had been the only cat in her homes before and we (you and I) didn’t know how she would act with another cat. A couple of months ago on a Friday morning at PAWSH at La Encantada, two women with two small children walked up to my ‘home’ that I was sharing with my brother and sister. They talked about how cute we were and one of the women said she would love to take me home but was afraid her parents would be mad at her since they had repeatedly told her….NO MORE ANIMALS!!!! Around noon the next day, the same lady with brown hair came back to see me. This time she had a bald-headed man wearing an orange shirt with her. I was so glad to see her because earlier in the day, my brother and sister left to go to their new home and I was left behind and was sad and lonely. When the lady with the brown hair asked to hold me, I was so happy and started to purr so loudly. When the worker put me in her arms, I knew we were meant to be together forever. The brown-haired lady felt the same way as I did and that made me so happy because I had finally found my new home and Mommy. After my Mommy filled out my paperwork and gave me a new name, Ginger, we were on our way to my new home and to meet my new grandparents. My Mommy was nervous that her parents would not like me but after about 45 seconds, they fell in love with me, too. I am so happy; my Mommy or grandparents are always picking me up and loving on me and that makes me purr even louder. They are always bringing home toys for me to play with, especially cute little furry mice. - Ginger (via Jane Elizabeth) SHELTER STATISTICS June-August 2013 Animals Abandoned at the Humane Society: Cats.................................... 987 Dogs................................ 1,079 Other.................................. 114 Total................................ 2,180 Animals Adopted: Happy with your adopted pet? The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is implementing a fun new way to connect you with a compatible companion! It’s called Meet Your Match, a program of the ASPCA. You could be gazing at the dog of your dreams, but you just can’t tell what she’s thinking behind that adorable, quizzical face. What if you knew a little something about her personality and habits before you moved in together? Lucky for you, the Meet Your Match program wouldn’t let you go home without knowing who’s on the other end of the leash. MYM is a scientifically based program developed by the ASPCA that evaluates an animal’s behavior and interests and matches them to an adopter’s lifestyle and preference so that you take home a pet you can really click with. Here’s how it works: The assessment evaluates each dog’s friendliness, playfulness, energy level, manners and sources of motivation. They are assigned a color – either green, orange or purple – that reveals where pooches stand in each of these areas. Adopters take a one-page survey, which also gives them a color. Once equipped with a better understanding of the characteristics adopters have and are seeking, they can peruse our adoptions area in search of their perfect pal. “With a clearer idea of what adopters expect and dogs need, Meet Your Match helps take some of the mystery out of the selection process,” explains Kelli Neufeld, HSSA Canine Services Program Coordinator. MYM is designed to lay the foundation for the human/canine bond to develop, increasing the potential for a successful, permanent placement. “Not only will MYM enable a better understanding of our dogs and our adopters to facilitate ideal matches, but it will improve our customer relations by helping to make adopting a more fun and positive experience,” says Neufeld. Ultimately, MYM will help guide, not decide, adoption choices. It’s just another tool to help you find the love of your life … like Match.com for pets! The HSSA plans to launch Meet Your Match by the end of the year. 8 Humanely Speaking • Fall 2013 Volunteer Spotlight Stuff their stockings! Park Place 881-7406 La Encantada 327-6577 Ken Levison has been a volunteer at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona for about a year and a half. Ken is an asset no matter where he helps – and that is often in the Spay & Neuter Clinic. Ken works as a greeter, directing and informing customers where they need to be and where they can pick up their pets. Ken also helps out with data entry, and manages to fulfill timeconsuming tasks effortlessly. He’s always happy to help no matter where he is needed. When he is not working in the clinic Ken lends his skills to Canine College, helping individual dogs sharpen and perfect their basic obedience training. Ken is a great Canine College teacher, with lots of patience and persistence to help each pet reach its full potential. “I really enjoy the people that I work with and I think that we are providing an incredible service for the animals,” Ken said. “We’re doing something that is important to the community.” Ken has two dogs of his own, Baby Louise a 5-year-old wire-haired dachshund, and Denny Crane, a 2-year-old English bulldog. Humanely Speaking • Fall 2013 9 The Feral Fix: Helping cat colonies through TNR By Dr. Kellie A. Barrett, DVM/Staff Veterinarian For many years, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona has used Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) as the preferred method of managing free-roaming cats. With nearly 70,000 feral cats in Tucson, TNR is essential to tackling pet overpopulation – preventing litters of homeless kittens from flooding into already overcrowded shelters. Here’s the scoop on the most humane and effective method of managing our feral feline friends: Want to help? One of our super supporters, Bonnie Kay, challenges you to match her gift! Bonnie recently donated $20,000 to help spay and neuter Tucson’s feral cats, but that’s just a fraction of what we need. Accept the challenge to show Bonnie that you care, too. Donate to the Trap/Neuter/Return fund at hssaz.org/fund today! What is a “feral cat?” A feral cat is a cat who has either never had any contact with humans or their contact with humans has diminished over time. They are fearful of people and survive on their own outdoors. A feral cat is not likely to ever become a lap cat or enjoy living indoors. What is “TNR?” “TNR” stands for Trap-Neuter-Return. Feral cats are captured in humane traps and then brought to a veterinarian for spay or neuter surgery. During the surgery, the cat is vaccinated and the left ear is tipped. Ear tipping is a universally accepted method of identifying a spayed or neutered and vaccinated feral cat. Ear tipping involves surgically removing a small piece of the cat’s ear. Feral facts • Feral cats – as opposed to stray or free-roaming owned cats – have had no or limited human contact and cannot be pets. • The feral cat population in the Tucson metro area is estimated to be about 70,000. • From Jan.-Sept. of this year, the HSSA has spayed or neutered 1,500 feral cats 10 Humanely Speaking • Fall 2013 A tipped ear on a freeroaming cat shows it has been spayed or neutered through TNR. The cat is then allowed to recover in the humane trap and is returned back to its colony the following day. How does The Humane Society of Southern Arizona help? The HSSA has a TNR program that provides spay or neuter surgery for feral cats. Cats are vaccinated for several common viruses and, if 3 months or older, Rabies. Treatment and preventives for worms, fleas and ear mites are also given. The left ear is tipped so they can be identified later as already being altered. Feral cats must be brought to the clinic in a humane trap. Other services provided for an additional charge include Feline Leukemia Virus/Feline Infectious Anemia Testing and Feline Leukemia Virus vaccine. How can YOU help? The Humane Society of Southern Arizona has generous people like you do- Help us reach our goal of a $20,000 match! Give today at hssaz.org/fund! nate money to help our shelter animals and our many programs. These cats need our help. TNR is the only effective and humane method of stabilizing feral or community cat populations. Spaying and neutering stops the breeding cycle and improve cats’ lives by ending stresses and behaviors associated with mating, including fighting, spraying, yowling, pregnancy and, ultimately, overpopulation. Because these felines cannot be socialized with people and placed in homes, we can help them live peacefully in our communities by spaying/neutering and vaccinating them. It takes a village but the rewards are immeasurable! Make a difference in the lives of feral cats and the people who care for them! JUST FOR KIDS! Scratching Post For our H.I.P. You can plan for your pets, too. We often receive pets from the relative of a deceased person. Sometimes this is the wish of the deceased, but often it is not. Without proper planning, pets who suddenly find themselves grieving over their guardian also find themselves homeless. Our Guardian Angel Program ensures that pets whose owners provide for them in estate planning are guaranteed safe, loving homes. hssaz.org • 3450 N.
