people.

About the competition
littleBIGidea is a national schools competition run by Origin that aims to foster creativity and innovation in students from grades
3 to 8.
The competition provides a platform for students to continue Australia's rich tradition of innovation which has seen solar hot
water, the black box flight recorder, the fridge and the bionic ear, amongst others, invented and developed on these shores.
littleBIGidea judges include James O'Loghlin, former host of the ABC's The New Inventors; Shelly Horton, senior editor at
Mamamia; and Dr Robert Bell, host of kids science show on TEN, Scope.
The Top 12 ideas – including the three overall winners - will be selected based on an exceptional demonstration of originality,
creativity, practicality, imagination and innovation.
littleBIGidea is part of Origin's Energy for Schools program – a free, online education resource for teachers and students
between grades 3 and 8. This year marks the program's 12th anniversary.
Hewitt Le’s adventure with Origin’s littleBIGidea Challenge
 Hewitt’s brother Jayden who is in Year 6 (to be a Bossley GAT Technology student in Year 7) was given the opportunity by
his school teacher to enter the competition.
 Hewitt was encouraged by his parents to also enter his own innovative idea.
 Hewitt developed an idea which drew upon his school experiences and learning in the GAT Technology Mandatory &
involvement in the Robotics Electronics and Programming Club. Hewitt devised to solve the “same bag problem @ BPHS”,
he wanted to build an electronic device using Arduino microprocessors sensors and actuators.
 He submitted the idea to the competition, and his idea was accepted pending the development of a prototype, and a YouTube
video showcasing the prototype. There were a record 850 submissions nationwide this year.
 He approached Mr El-Miski regarding possibly refining and prototyping the idea for the competition. Mr El-Miski and Hewitt
worked for a few weeks on the device.
 The prototype was completed at school and a YouTube video was submitted.
 The idea, prototype and video submission was judged good enough that he was invited to compete in an official forum




held at the Power House Museum. His work was TOP 4 IN THE COUNTRY for his age group (Year 7-8).
Hewitt and Mr El-Miski were asked by Origin’s littleBigIdea’s organisers if Channel 7 television could interview them for a
piece they were doing about the competition. Filming was approved by Mr Hollis and Hewitt’s parents and occurred during
the Term 3 holidays.
First day of Term 4 Hewitt attended the judging forum, showcased his prototype with a great speech and presentation.
Hewitt was a runner-up in the competition. What a marvellous achievement, typifying his resilience, work ethic and
ingenuity.
He receives a $1,000 cash prize and some other things. First prize was a fully funded trip to NASA, Disneyland, and a few
other places in the USA and $5,000 spending money WOW!
