I ever since the late 1890’s the family has had a presence in the resort and from north pier to Blackpool pleasure Beach and then back down the prom to coral Island, the petulengro’s can still be found reading palms. and the business doesn’t stop there because this family also has a traditional sweet shop, music business, café and ice-cream and donut stands. 12 H www.visitblackpool.com H Gypsy Sarah petulengro, who reads palms from a booth in Blackpool pleasure Beach, says it’s great to be part of a long family tradition. She said: “It all officially started with my Great-Granny alice eva and we’ve been in Blackpool ever since. “Today you will find myself, my mum leah, my daughter Julie and my sister debra all working in Blackpool. “We were born into this and it is lovely to be such a part of Blackpool’s history. We have clients who return time and time again, including well known names, and of course we have people come to see us who have never had their fortune told before.” and Sarah says while she’s seen enormous and positive changes to Blackpool, her clientele has also changed a lot over the years. “I’ve been doing this for 34 years now, since I was 15,” she added. “It always used to be housewives who came into see us but you get a lot of men and younger guys wanting me to read their palms now too, and that in itself, makes it more interesting. “You really do feel like you are helping people and it is so enjoyable to meet so many different people. “Blackpool has such a fascinating history anyway and I really feel that we, as a family, are adding to that. I do hope so and I do hope that our family tradition continues for at least another 100 years.” Fascinating FACT The name petulengro actually means Blacksmith in romany. The family’s original name was Smith and because of their dark romany looks they became known as the Blacksmith’s, hence the change to petulengro. rom Prime Ministers to authors to wounded soldiers, Blackpool’s Imperial Hotel has certainly welcomed some interesting guests since it first opened in 1867. F This Grade II listed building is steeped in history and can boast guests ranging from Sir Winston churchill to the pet Shop Boys, Her Majesty Queen elizabeth the Queen Mother to premiership footballers! There have been a myriad of famous musicians and stars from across the globe in between and the hotel even became a hospital for wounded officers during World War I. For guests staying at The Imperial today make sure you give yourself time to relax in the derby lounge. This reading room houses more than 300 biographies of famous people who have slept under the hotel’s roof. or if you fancy a nightcap, then where better than the no10 Bar? you will be forgiven for thinking you’ve entered an exclusive Whitehall club. H www.visitblackpool.com H 13 CELEBRATING WORLD WAR I in Blackpool It’s 100 years since the outbreak of World War I and to commemorate this historic event Blackpool will be remembering our fallen heroes and the impact the war itself had on the resort I n June residents and visitors come together to celebrate Blackpool Armed Forces Week. investigate what remains of the trench system under the park. aerial photographs show the general layout of the trenches is still there but the project will look at any physical remains underground. The big dig will be supervised by professional archaeologists and everything discovered will go on display at a reconstruction date later in the summer. Who knows what lies underneath? From 23 – 29 June the resort hosts a week long celebration honouring serving military past, present and future. during this week the entire town comes together with a range of special offers for members of the armed forces and their families. The activities include free concerts, exhibitions, military and ceremonial tributes and much, much more. WAR MEMORIAL ILLUMINATION And throughout the year Blackpool Council is concentrating on three key projects to commemorate WWI. The unique projection programme at Blackpool’s seafront War Memorial will be refreshed and re-designed to commemorate the centenary year. DUG IN Did you know Blackpool was a major base for trench training during WWI? dug In is an exhibition looking at the work undertaken on the trench training system under Watson road park. The Watson road site is unique as it was the only training site ever opened to the public as a visitor attraction. The money from this went to support the local convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers. The exhibition will reproduce images and information uncovered during the research into the trench system and the First World War's social impact on Blackpool. 14 H www.visitblackpool.com H This exhibition will then move to the extended and refurbished pavilion at Watson road park so you can catch it for the rest of the year. THE LOOS & ARRAS TRENCHES PROJECT an opportunity to get your hands dirty! This community based archaeology project is aimed at understanding the WWI training trench system under Watson road park. With evidence from dug In, an archaeological dig will take place to Using the latest technology a new programme will be created to show a roll call of the great battles with the dates and numbers of fatalities and moving imagery and archive footage. carl carrington, Built Heritage Service Manager at Blackpool council, is responsible for the history projects which form part of the resort’s WWI commemorations and said 2014 will really highlight the part played by Blackpool in the Great War. Telephone Dugouts - these are situated in the Front Line Trenches and are connected up with Battalion HQ. Wires have to be tested and repaired every day often under shell fire. carl said: “World War I is such an incredibly important part of our history that we have to ensure Blackpool plays a key role in those commemorations “The dug In exhibition and our archaeological dig are a great opportunity to show residents and visitors how the war affected local people, but also how they used their knowledge of tourism to create the only tour of the trenches available in Britain to support medical care for wounded soldiers. It’s a moving story of how local people used local skills to help the war effort. “We are also particularly excited about our plans for the War Memorial and as the home of the Illuminations there just isn’t a better way to commemorate those people from Blackpool who died serving their country.” For more information about Blackpool’s world war i commemoration plans go to www.visitblackpool.com/whats-on Fascinating FACT Blackpool was the first town in the country to dedicate a whole week to the British Armed Forces and has continued to do so since the official launch of National Armed Forces Day by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in the resort in 2008. Communications Manager at Marketing Blackpool, Sarah Rhodes, can handle up to five filming enquiries a week. Sarah said: “It is great to be able to welcome positive filming to Blackpool and it is really enjoyable to work with film crews to ensure we can meet their needs while in resort. How about the 2012 chart topping hit from American rockers The Killers with their video for Here With Me? Again, filmed in Blackpool. Tune into CBeebies or CBBC and you will regularly see Blackpool in the background whether it’s would-be Blue Peter presenters trying out Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Big One rollercoaster or children’s funnyman Justin Fletcher filming with youngsters in the Sandcastle Waterpark. Then there was the big one for 2013 when Harry Hill the Movie was filmed almost entirely in Blackpool with none other than Brit favourite Julie Walters, BAFTA Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith, comic genius Matt Lucas and, of course, Harry Hill. More recently Blackpool has even welcomed the Meerkats from the Compare the Market ad’ idents which run around the soap. A series of adverts were filmed in summer 2013 involving the Meerkats enjoying a day trip away from Coronation Street to visit Blackpool. “Of course, the story was set in Blackpool and therefore it was essential that we filmed there but that is not always the case and very often you have to create a location in another town or even a film studio. But on this occasion we absolutely had to film in Blackpool and it was perfect. “I have filmed in numerous seaside resorts and I can honestly say Blackpool has it all. Sea, beautiful stretches of Promenade, the all-important Blackpool Tower, beaches, funfair rides, the list goes on. It really is a unique location and while it was great for filming, the whole cast and crew had a great time staying there.” It’s well documented that TV soap Coronation Street has been to the resort too many times to mention. Whether it was a nostalgic trip for Jack and Vera, younger cast members having fun days out or the never forget moment when Alan Bradley met his maker. “It is never just a case of someone turning up with a camera and shooting. Weeks and sometimes many months of planning go into sourcing the right locations, and sometimes props, in Blackpool. “It is our job to ensure that when those film crews arrive, whether for a big budget film or a children’s show, they have everything they need, they have their desired location and most importantly, that their experience of Blackpool means they will want to return either to film a new venture or even as a holidaymaker.” Warwick Davis So whether you’re planning a holiday or your next film, don’t forget, Blackpool really does have it covered. You’d be forgiven for thinking Blackpool is all about thrills, spills and seaside holidays In fact, Blackpool and the surrounding Fylde Coast are also the perfect location for business and enterprise. There are endless opportunities for new investment and development in the tourism sector with continual requirements for new hotel accommodation, new attractions and associated food and retail outlets. And while the leisure sector still forms the backbone of the economy, the area has far more to offer the entrepreneur, industrialist and investor. In recent years Blackpool town centre has seen significant investment creating a vastly improved public realm and infrastructure making it far more enticing for the visitor and resident alike. In particular, the Houndshill Shopping Centre has been significantly extended and updated with a range of new national retailers. The world famous coastal tramway has been transformed into a new £110 m light railway linking the town to Fleetwood, while Muse Developments creation of a Central Business District (CBD) around Blackpool North Railway Station which will open by Easter 2014, is anchored by new offices for Blackpool Council and a Sainsbury’s food store, and is perfectly placed to offer new office and retail accommodation. The tram system will also be extended to serve North Station in the next few years. The site of Blackpool’s original railway station, once earmarked for the super casino project, is also on target to deliver a £250m leisure-focused development by 2018 - bringing with it the prospect of more than a million additional visitors to the resort and a thousand new jobs. 42 H www.visitblackpool.com H Photograph © Mark Liebenberg Photography He added: “I’m really enthused with the opportunities the Fylde Coast presents for business and developers, especially when you consider the advantages that its emerging energy sector will bring. This includes jobs, wealth, spending power and a ready supply of low cost energy to fuel new business providing a significant competitive edge. And with huge opportunities being created in the energy sector, Rob Green, Head of Enterprise and Investment for the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Economic Development Company, said it’s a very exciting time to invest along the Fylde Coast. Rob said: “When we think of Blackpool we immediately associate the town with tourism and leisure. Why wouldn’t you when Blackpool is the UK’s most popular seaside destination? “But Blackpool has so much to offer the investor too. Whether you want to open a tourism related business or you are planning on bringing an international manufacturer to the Fylde Coast there are some fantastic opportunities for all businesses here.” It is of particular interest that the energy sector is currently focusing on Blackpool and the Fylde Coast and Rob believes this will have incredible benefits for the area. 44 H www.visitblackpool.com H “The Fylde Coast will lead Lancashire’s energy revolution over the next decade, many thousands of jobs will be created both within the shale gas industry led by Cuadrilla Resources and its supply chain, but also within the key renewables’ sector.” Rob added: “The energy revolution will undoubtedly create a new direct and indirect supply chain, employment and opportunities, and provide a real boost to the economy, but its biggest impact may well lie in the ability to provide lower cost energy direct to manufacturing business.” INDUSTRY ON THE FYLDE • Blackpool was the birthplace of Jaguar cars • BAE Systems at Warton is the home of the RAF Typhoon and Hawk • Springfields Fuels at Salwick employs more than 1,300 people • Victrex Plc, Vinolitt GmbH and AGCCE Ltd are all based at Thornton and export their goods worldwide © Mark Liebenberg Photography • Fleetwood was the North West’s premier fishing port and still employs 600+ residents in the fish industry DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Hillhouse International Business Park has more than 30ha of land for development • Enterprise Zone, Warton – an area focusing on advanced engineering and aerospace sectors with the benefit of financial incentives for qualifying companies So whether you are looking to relocate, you’re a fresh new start-up or you just want to find out more about business opportunities in Blackpool and the surrounding area contact Rob Green today for more information: email rob@bfwedc.co.uk or call 01253 478 729 • Whitehills Business Park at the end of the M55 – ideally placed to serve 350,000 residents locally and access wider Lancashire and the North West • The home of ERNIE - the old Premium Bond HQ at Mythop Road in Blackpool - a stone’s throw from the M55 and a mile from Blackpool Airport GREAT REPUTATIONS… and all based on the Fylde Coast • NS&I ( premium bonds) - State-owned investments organisation • AI Solutions - Ethical motor claims solution provider • Tangerine Confectionery - the largest UK-owned sugar confectionery and popcorn manufacturer • Springfields Fuels - Manufacturer of nuclear fuels and associated products • BAE Systems - Defence, security and aerospace engineers • Victrex PLC - Manufacturer of high performance polymers • AGCCE Ltd - Producer of fluorochemicals and fluoropolymers • Vinolitt GmbH - Specialist PVC manufacturer • Lofthouses – Producer of the Fisherman's Friend lozenge • Danbro Accountants - Contractor accountants and payroll specialists • Glasdon - Producer of heavy duty plastic products • Aegon - Life insurance and pensions company • Cuadrilla Resources - Natural resource exploration and production company • Universal Laboratories Ltd Manufacturers for the pharmaceutical and personal care markets Photograph by Art Lisa Photography H www.visitblackpool.com H 45 IN BLACKPOOL & T H E F YL DE COA S T More than 13 million people can‘t be wrong when they visit Blackpool every year and that is why it remains the UK’s most popular seaside resort But how about living in Blackpool and the surrounding Fylde Coast? Have you ever considered a move to the seaside? Now’s the time to stop thinking and actually do something about it. Like the holiday destination, Blackpool and the wider Fylde Coast as a place to live is great and has something to suit every budget. Whether you are after your first home or you are in a position to buy one of the area’s many premium properties there really is something for everyone. Estate agent Kevin Allitt was born in Blackpool and several decades later is still here. Today he is Managing Director of Oystons Estate Agency and he believes there is a magical draw to the resort. Kevin said: “Having lived all over the world and in London there is something that keeps bringing me back to my hometown of Blackpool. “I don't know whether it is the seven miles of golden sands, the wealth of local amenities, theatres, parks, schools, golf courses, superb public transport or just the people and brilliant atmosphere. “In essence it is a seaside town and is the most popular holiday resort in the UK. That alone means visitors and the tourist industry bring an abundance of energy and excitement. “And it's for the same reason that we get so many buyers from all over the UK coming to live in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.” Property on the Fylde Coast is among some of the most affordable in England with retirement apartments starting from as little as £50,000, first time buyer homes from £75,000, retirement bungalows from £95,000 and traditional family sized semi-detached homes from £100,000. Whether you want a sea view or rolling countryside, the location of this area affords everyone the opportunity to experience a rural or cosmopolitan lifestyle. Kevin added: “There is something for everyone and that’s what makes the area so attractive. Whether you’re starting out on the property ladder or your budget stretches to £500,000, we have fabulous homes around areas such as Stanley Park which would cost you £5 million plus in some parts of the country. “There is a perfect area and perfect home for everyone to match their needs, tastes and budget on the Fylde Coast.” Photographs © Fylde Borough Council 46 H www.visitblackpool.com H And estate agent Stephen Howes, a Director at McDonald Property in Blackpool, said it is this variety that is the key selling point to the area.
