The Appearance and Exotic Award, if there were such a thing, would go to the Porsche Abarth of Ranson Webster, Ferrari 250GT SWB, of Ned Spieker, any one of the three ’57 Corvettes driven by Les Alexander, Ron Erickson or Bob Patterson (yep, the trend setting ’57 Vette!)º, Lotus Elites of Henry Moore or Dennis Adair, Alfa TZ of Joe Colasacco and of course the Ferrari GTO of Tom Price. One had to give the “spunk”award to Terry Cowan racing a Sebring Sprite. Now as to the racing action – the #3 Alfa Romeo TZ of Joe Colasacco had the field covered with best lap times and took the checker after 9 laps only edging out Ron Goodman of Australia in his #23, 1954 Porsche 356 by 11 seconds. Mark Colbert #10, 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso-C was in the hunt and finished third keeping that beautiful Ferrari competitive. GROUP 4A , 1973-1981 FIA, IMSA GTGTX-AAGT-GTU turned out a capacity field of just under four dozen cars. These were fast cars and of a big variety from Porsche, Corvette, BMW, Datsun, Mustang and the surprising Dekon Monzas. As the field approached the green flag, at about midafternoon, it was clear from qualifying times it could be a good race both at the front and in several groups. This group was big fast closed Sports Racers that contested LeMans, Daytona, Sebring and other high profile circuits in major championships. On this occasion they were driven by many past pros, mixed in with skilled amateurs. Two past pros made it exciting for the win. #100, 1990 Porsche 962, driven by past pro Bruce Canepa, was hard chased by another past pro, Parker Johnstone in #49, 1991 Accura Spice GTP Light. They finished in that order for first and second after 12 laps separated by only 8 seconds. Track sponsor Mazda was well represented by the #62, 1991 Mazda RX7 of Jeremy Barnes taking fifth ahead of #56, 1990 Mazda RX7 of Robert Davis, both just ahead of #75, 1990 Nissan 3002 of Steve Millen. GROUP 8A 1967-1984 Formula One Cars rolled out on the circuit at 5:30 to start their 12 lap race. It was an excellent field of 30 starters, depleted from the original 37 entries breathtaking speeds on narrow tires, with the driver sitting upright and fully visible while fighting the steering wheel for control as the car got light and turned at the same time was impressive. The allotted 9 laps went by all too quickly as the action at the front settled into two groups. Vying for first was Paddins Dowling #3, 1939 Maserati 4CL and Jon Shirley’s 1934 Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B. Both were turning really identical lap times for the full race. At the chequer they finished in that order, separated by a little over a car length. Three cars were contesting third place: Peter Giddings #31, 1932 Alfa Romeo Monza, Daniel Ghose #0, 1933 Maserati and Stephen Curtis’ 1934 ERA R2A. Curtis ended up with the fastest lap of the three, but Giddings took the chequer in third place after nine exciting laps. GROUP 2B 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT cars. This could have been a racing grid at any SCCA race in the early 1950s. The “modifieds” were American home or garage by various mechanical ills on these high strung thoroughbred racing machines. Almost every famous make of F.1 World Championship cars were represented. Chris MacAllister brought one of the most rare #1, 1978 Ferrari 312 T1. Another was Duncan Dayton’s #5T, 1978 Lotus 79. All the way from France was Jean Denis Deletraz in #19, 1976 Surtees TS19. A third of the field’s drivers were from outside the U.S. As to the exciting race, and a race it was, with less than a second separating 1, 2, at the chequer. That well driven combo took the win after 8 laps but by less than a second over Brian Orosco #36, 1959 Lola Mk1 and Chris Orosco #90, 1959 Lola Mk1, both powered by 1.5 liter Climax engines. This was a quality grid with seven Lotus Elevens, the quickest was driven by Bruce Miller. Top Porsche Sports Racer was the #34, 1958 Porsche 550A who finished just behind Terry Hefty’s #98, 1959 Cooper Monaco and just ahead of Miller’s Lotus. This race saw some of the most precise, yet aggressive driving as the drivers tried their utmost to drive smoothly, yet quick through the corners and late apexing to use every horsepower available down the few straights. GROUP 4B 1961-1966 GT Cars under 2500cc. A big field took the green flag about 2:30p.m. for this 20 minute race.
