Since our first meeting, the screenplay has undergone some exciting changes and developments. Jules et Jim for the 21st century — that came straight to my mind when confronted by the dramatic twists and turns of this love triangle. This time, however, it's two women and one man who are entangled in their loves and desires: three people who cannot free themselves from each other, and who must first reach high in the sky to finally, eventually, find their footing on solid ground again. GHOSTS is also a "Berlin story", one that is difficult to imagine happening elsewhere. Berlin is an engendering magnet for volatile, complex, searching young "citizens of the world". Berlin, a city that continually reinvents itself. In GHOSTS, three young Europeans from completely different worlds collide: PAUL, the musician from London; BELLA, the beautiful French woman who hasn't yet found her place in life; and KÄTHE, the native Berliner, the anchoring nucleus and point of reference for the other two — and as a result, she faces the danger of being crushed... Paul's music, which will give the movie its unique sound and rhythm, will also underscore the emotional turmoil of the protagonists. Music, however, will be a theme and leitmotif. GHOSTS Synopsis Berlin — a loud, fast, and dirty city, and the place where three young people run into each other: PAUL, a talented musician from England who seems to be on the verge of his breakthrough; BELLA, a very beautiful young Frenchwoman who, though daring, outspoken and direct, is still in search for her goal in life; and KÄTHE, a true-blue Berliner who works as a social worker with street kids. These three fall in love with each other — completely, deeply, and intensely — and begin a shared life together as a threesome. A bittersweet love, the triangular relationship is in constant danger of falling apart: PAUL, a man as gifted as he is erratic, can be extremely destructive at times. Aside from music, he has one other obsession: he climbs and crosses the roofs high above the city. KÄTHE, who has a fear of heights and is very down-to-earth, is easily caught in the vortex of PAUL's "death wish" and verges on losing herself in her attempts to protect him. BELLA has to witness how the two of them, whom she loves equally, begin to falter. She wants to save them, their love, and the three-way relationship — but is she able to? When PAUL develops an emotional crisis that threatens to tear the three apart and destroy the relationship, all three decide to undertake a joint journey to much higher rooftops: to the "roof of the world", deep into the mountain landscape of the Himalayas. PAUL has gone there often — whenever he's found himself in the need of regaining his footing. This is the first time, however, that he allows KÄTHE and BELLA to accompany him. There on the roof of the world, in total isolation, without the grounding stability of the familiar, their love is put to the ultimate test. 6 — GERMAN PROJECTs GERMAN PROJECTs — 7 augenschein Filmproduktion GmBH English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . With her final shorts she already had proven her skill in blending the awkwardness of strange daily life situations with the deep almost surreal depths of human emotions. We knew that the director’s handwriting and the emotional and yet accessible story were a very good package right from the start. Charlotte’s main conflict is easy to understand, she does not have the time to wait anymore. She embarks on a journey thus leading her whole family, her husband, her daughter and her granddaughter into a route towards life and love. During this trip each family member faces his own “monster” and by overcoming these fears, everyone finds the access to love. It is a wonderful story though never has been an easy one to write. The script for MONSTER was developed within The Munich Screenplay Workshop and was elected by the European Training program of EKRAN. MONSTER also enabled us to already raise the interest of the German broadcasters SR and WDR. Kerstin Polte is a Suisse-German filmmaker and according to the border crossing script, the project was set up as an international co-production from the start. The Rendez-Vous in Marseille would be the best place for finding a matching French partner with whom we can fulfill the project’s high potential to attract an international audience 8 — GERMAN PROJECTs MONSTER Synopsis Simply living towards the grave is not what Charlotte (58) wants. Her husband Paul (62) is a recently retired risk assessor who is trying to keep himself busy. He doesn`t notice his wife`s restlessness. The passion she is longing for is not to be expected from the quiet stoic any time soon. To make things worse there is a growing suspicion that something is not right with her. Lately, a lot of little details vanish from her memory. Their daughter Vera (36) is a hot-tempered driving instructor who is deeply entangled in her own unhappiness. To avoid getting hurt she is a keen practitioner of the pre-emptive strike in emotional matters. It is hardly surprising that she is quite lonely. But she doesn’t believe in love anyway. Her daughter Jo (12) has been declared highly talented and Vera tries everything to transform her into a normal girl. Jo has more important things on her mind though. With analytical skill and the unspoiled mind of an underage philosopher she tackles the big questions of life and death not at last because her cat Bootsmann has just died after falling from the balcony. The tightly scheduled eventlessness of Charlotte’s everyday life and the fact that the truly important things are always left unsaid in this family becomes more suffocating. Charlotte’s fear of disappearing before her life even started prompts her to rebel more and more. When Charlotte eventually leaves her old life behind at a filling station to go on a roadtrip with her granddaughter and the dead cat, Paul and Vera are left puzzled and somewhat shocked. Charlottes and Jo’s first impulse just to run away develops more and more into a self-determined new beginning. Far away from their old patterns they dive into the here and now, encountering their fear, their monsters, and they welcome the surprises that life and love has to offer. But Paul catches up to Charlotte. And on her way to struggle back to her daughter Vera falls deeply in love with someone she would have never expected. Paul’s plan to bring Charlotte back to their old life quickly gives way to realize that life will never again be what it was. He has to reevaluate his plan and come to a new decision: to follow her into the chaos. He plunges into a strange world. He fights over his woman for the first time in his life. Co-Producer in France Synopsis Paris, 1937. Andras Lévi, a Hungarian architecture student, arrives from Budapest with a scholarship, a single suitcase, and a mysterious letter he promised to deliver. But when he falls into a passionate relationship with the letter's recipient - Claire Morgenstern, a Hungarian émigré with a shadowy past and a decade older than him. He becomes privy to a secret that will alter the course of his and his family’s history. Meanwhile, as his elder brother takes up medical studies in Italy and his younger brother leaves school for the stage, Europe’s unfolding tragedy sends each of their lives into terrifying uncertainty as Europe erupts in a cataclysm of war. Two families bound by the same destiny are tossed by the winds of war from 1937 until 1945, from 1956 and beyond, when the surviving family members are able to flee Soviet-controlled Hungary for freedom and a new life in America. THE INVISIBLE BRIDGE by Julie Orringer is a grand love story full of secrets and a tale of three brothers whose lives are torn apart by war. A marriage tested by deceit and disaster, a family threatened with annihilation, bound by love and tradition. A haunting love story and an epic World War II saga like THE ENGLISH PATIENT, SOPHIE’S CHOICE and SUNSHINE 10 — GERMAN PROJECTs GERMAN PROJECTs — 11 GREENSTONEFILMS ALCHIMISTS English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The film will be directed by Eka Papiashvilii and written + codirected by Carsten Böhnke. 12 — GERMAN PROJECTs Synopsis 20 year old Muriel moves from Germany to Paris in order to apply for the acting class at the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique. In Paris she meets Hamid, an intellectual and playwright in his early 30's and his editor Claire. Hamid who is not only poet but also leftist activist, stays illegal in France and fears of being deported. Claire supports Hamid with payments for his stage plays and with a small apartment in the 10th arrondissement. Soon Muriel gets behind Hamids secret: Hamid is forced into a relation with Claire which he actually doesn't want. Claire adores Hamid in an almost fanatic way and threats to report him to the police, if he ever leaves her. Caught in this cage, Hamid is working on a new theater piece about terrorism which is important for his career and may also help him to seek asylum. Hamid is fascinated by Muriels acting skills and expression. Muriel starts working for Hamid, by acting the characters of his play. Soon Muriel and Hamid develop emotions for each other. Claire, who dislikes Muriels presence from the first moment on, starts to become jealous. When she realizes that Hamids thoughts are always with Muriel, she suffers a nervous breakdown and calls the police. The policemen arrive in the early morning at Hamids place while Muriel is still rehearsing. When Muriel realizes that Hamid is going to be arrested, her rehearsal role of a terrorist becomes reality: She takes the toy gun, which she uses for rehearsing, frees Hamid and handcuffs the policemen. Hamid knows that he has to flee now himself if he doesn't want to get arrested and deported. Muriel keeps on playing her role: While Hamid waits for her in a bar, Muriel robs a jewelry shop whose owner once tried to rape her. Equipped with this money they manage to flee to Claires house in Marseille, while the police and media is on the manhunt for Hamid, since Muriel has not been identified. After their first night together, Hamid plans to leave France without Muriel in order to protect her. The police shoots him while he tries to get on board a ferry. Muriel gets this news from Claire who directly came to Marseille after she started regretting her betrayal. It is the same morning when Muriel gets to know that she has been accepted as a student by the conservatoire. But knowing her love is dead she takes revenge on Claire… GERMAN PROJECTs — 13 MEDEA FILM FACTORY FACTORY COWBOY English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In TRANSMORPHOSIS we see an opportunity to think outside the box, pull out all the stops creatively and create a film we’ve never seen before. The screen adaptation focuses on the search for identity. It shows Valeska’s yearning and quest for recognition despite many disappointments and setbacks, and reveals how her longing for love and recognition remains unanswered, even when she’s achieved her artistic and career goals. Gender/gender roles is one of the key issues of our time. The Amazon series TRANSPARENT recently received a Golden Globe Award. In the series HIT & MISS Chloë Sevigny plays a transgender contract killer. THE DANISH GIRL opens in US theaters in the fall of 2015. Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision contest and two transgender models, Andreja Pejic and Carmen Carrera, are among the highest paid models working today. I want to use this momentum to dive into the financing process of this amazing and unique film. I believe that, when told in a daring and challenging manner, this story, thanks to its extraordinary subject matter and lavish setting, will reach a great number of people 16 — GERMAN PROJECTs Synopsis 1977. Little Victor’s greatest desire is to be a girl, but he keeps this as a secret from his parents who who never really appreciated him. At the age of eighteen he cuts the cords with his parents and moves to his aunt who helps him with his transformation: Victor becomes Valeska. Shortly after the transformation Valeska is discovered by a photographer and signs a contract to work as a model in Paris – and it seems like life could not get any better. Finally Valeska receives admiration. However, even though everyone idolizes the successful ”superwoman“, there still is a small, subtle difference that makes life hard for Valeska… Valeska’s story is the true story of the first transsexual model of the international fashion world, when nobody yet knew that she was actually born as a man. TRANSMORPHOSIS is based on a true story and is about Valeska’s path to success in the fashion world and the ”small difference“ that makes it a lot more complicated but not less funny, about the search for love and the realization that admiration, fame and popularity don’t necessarily mean that you are accepted as what you really are. The peculiar melancholic cheerfulness makes us experience a unique story of success that proves that it is possible to question conventions and to overcome boundaries. The film is based on the autobiographic novel “Flowers for a chameleon” by Valeska Réon, published in the Männerschwarm Verlag GERMAN PROJECTs — 17 OVAL MEDIA BERLIN GmbH MELANGE SARL - REAL LIFE FILM INTERNATIONAL GmBH Robert Cibis Eupener Straße 165, 50933 Köln - Germany Email Phone Fax Mobile robert@oval.media +49 (0)221 30079353 +49 (0)30 280 461 89 +49 (0)176 83032860 www.oval.media Producer’s Note WAIT FOR ME is a fiction story world made up of 4 platforms that complement each other, like in a puzzle, as they tell the story from a different character POV. The characters in the series also use the same app to communicate between each other, a bit like “What’s app”. We, the spectator, see the app from one of the characters point of view: TIM’s phone in the story world becomes replicated on our phone in real life. The viewer’s progression through the story world of “Wait for Me” is fueled by the episodes in the series as well as by all the information provided through his/her own interaction using his/her phone in real life, during or in between the episodes. 3. A 10 minutes Virtual Reality film for an immersive full 360° spherical video headgear experience. This will complement the series by allowing the viewer to access the full subjective story as lived and perceived by the character KÖL. This storyline will help us understand that Köl may be holding the key to the mysteries of the series. It will be a very subjective and super natural experience, crossing points with moments in the series. Synopsis The night can be a magical mental space, which challenges us to truly experience a transgressive form of freedom and self-expression. But in the process of exploring the wilder side of who we may be, we do not know what powers we may wake up in the process… WAIT FOR ME is an interactive story world around a group of friends in Berlin choosing a life of fun, freedom, and wildness in the night. But then one day they find themselves sucked into some kind of a trance state that they cannot control. They are profoundly shaken by the experience although they cannot remember any of it. The only trace they have of what they went through all together is a mysterious video shot from one of their phones. Is it a bad party drug? When it happens again in unexpected ways and without any drugs taken, they want to understand what is really happening to them… Progressively, reality is no longer the clear cut divide between day life and night magic that it used to be. More strange things start happening… until a bad accident happens and makes the whole thing not fun at all any longer… 4. A live event In Real Life, which will be a full-scale party, an event imbedded in the story world to close it. This party will be hosted as being the one where the characters all try to gather in the cellar to see if they can trigger the trance again. WAIT FOR ME is a co-production by MELANGE (Michel Reilhac), France and OVALmedia (Robert Cibis), Germany. It is planned to premiere at Re:Publica in Berlin May 2 to 4, 2016. The budget is estimated at 350.000 €, about 100.000 € are already in place. 18 — GERMAN PROJECTs GERMAN PROJECTs — 19 PARS MEDIA Marieke Schroeder Rambergstr. 5, 80799 München, Germany Email Phone Fax Mobile ms@parsmedia.com +49 (0)89 396511 +49 (0)89 397302 +49 (0)172 8328487 www.parsmedia.com Producer’s Note A man reads a book about a woman. Through literature he discovers reality. He falls in love. This is the premise of the film, The Book Jeanne, a film about the esoteric channels between fiction and reality. A film about what happens when a reader and a literary figure meet in real life. Does the book become a demon that overshadows reality? And what happens when she finds out with what intimate and predicated insight he gained her trust? Does he love her, or is he in love with a character in a book? Above all, The Book Jeanne is about the original theme of film since the invention of shot reverse shot: desire. A man observes a woman. We see his gaze, and then we see her. His feelings are charged into the images and are then transmitted to the viewer. We now see through his eyes. Antoine’s encounters with Jeanne are interspersed with the analogous experiences that Pierre describes in his book. The film switches levels; it links them at points by means of Pierre’s narrative voice; at other times they are allowed to switch without transition. Reality and imagination are only minimally differentiated. Antoine continuously looses orientation. Does he even love this woman, or does he just love Pierre’s longing for her? 20 — GERMAN PROJECTs THE BOOK JEANNE English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . His friend Pierre’s last book was a surprise success with the public and with critics. Antoine wants to announce his friend’s next book soon. But Pierre has fallen in love with a young lady, whose enigmatic nature is driving him insane. He begins writing down his love story. Antoine is appalled; personal experiences aren’t the stuff of literature to him. He begrudgingly reads the first chapter. Reading, he begins to see Jeanne with new eyes, loving eyes. Beginning playfully, Antoine searches out the places that Pierre describes. He reviews the facts, registering the consistencies and discrepancies. He follows Jeanne in a car, suddenly finds himself while jogging at her doorstep and then enters her apartment. The game becomes an obsession. He impatiently waits for each new chapter Pierre sends him. He neglects his work and falls into a grey area between fiction and reality. One day – Pierre is now separated from her – the lines get blurred. Antoine and Jeanne meet, seemingly by coincidence. They see each other a second and third time. They fall in love with each other. They enjoy some happy moments, yet the demons of the past catch up with them. What Antoine has read about the Jeanne of the novel overpowers his meetings with the real her. Once he finally thinks he’s freed himself from the book, Jeanne finds the manuscript on his desk. Antoine cheated on her, with herself – as a character in a book. She leaves. A year later. Jeanne sits on the podium of the House of Literature and reads from her novel „The Book Jeanne“. A journalist asks whether the woman in the novel has something to do with the real Jeanne. Smiling, she answers, “truth can only ever be invented.“ GERMAN PROJECTs — 21 FRENCH PROJECTS ATOPIC Christophe GOUGEON 16 rue Bleue, 75009 Paris, France Email Phone Mobile atopic@wanadoo.fr +33 (0)1 43 15 90 90 +33 (0)6 64 86 04 51 www.atopic.fr Producer’s Note Don Juan comes back from war is originally a theatre piece of German playwright von Horvath Oton which was directed by Jacques Osinski as part of a coproduction between the Maison de la Culture of Grenoble (MC2) and the National Dramatic Center of the Alps (CNDA). I produced his last mid-length film IN VAIN, awarded in many festivals. I believe that we share a common taste for adventures and experimentations. 10,000 nights… is based on a true story. It is both an inner adventure and a survival tale. Its potential of signification and fascination is in my opinion prodigious. For his script, Arthur has worked with Vincent Poymiro, an inventive and rigorous screenwriter. Furthermore, Jean-Claude Carrière is following the writing process. Finally, Bernard Cendron, author of «Onoda, 30 years alone at war», is also helping. Arthur now reached a version which takes into account the pitfalls of the historical facts, and draws them towards their full dramatic potential. The conditions are now gathered for the fulfillment of our project. But many french funds won’t help non-french speaking film. It is absolutely necessary for me to find coproducers in Europe – Germany in particular – and Asia. But I think it is also the nature of the film itself, its universal relevance, that demands to cross the frontiers and to look widely abroad. 26 — FRENCH PROJECTs 10,000 NIGHTS IN THE JUNGLE English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hiroo Onoda is sent to the strategic island of Lubang, in the Philippines to wage a guerrilla war. He has in mind his superior's last words: "Whatever the circumstances, never give up either your mission or your life. It might take three years, or even five but whatever happens we will come back for you." On the island, the Japanese have already capitulated. Onoda soon finds himself with only three men: Akatsu, Shimada and Kozuka. They penetrate deep into the jungle to start work on the second part of the mission: harassing the enemy until the Japanese troops come back. The months turn into years. The territory becomes their kingdom. But one day, in a fight with Philippine soldiers, Shimada is shot dead. It leads Akatsu to surrender. Onoda and Kozuka then retreat even deeper into the jungle and isolation. When news of the world reaches them, they always reinterpret it to tell the story of a parallel reality in which the war is not ended. Years pass. The island becomes their world - for them, the whole world. But in 1972, 28 years after arriving on the island, Kozuka is shot. From now on, Onoda is alone, a phantom in the jungle. In February 1974, Norio Suzuki, an adventurous young student, lands on Lubang. Onoda quickly spots him. But Suzuki gains his trust. He tells him that the war has been over for 29 years, and that Japan has surrendered. Onoda still resists: he says he can only lay down his weapons on the direct order of his superior. Suzuki promises to find him. One month later his superior is there, a frail old man. He reads out the emperor's order to surrender, dating from 1945. Onoda then empties his magazine and lays down his rifle. After one last trip to Kozuka's grave, Onoda flies off in a helicopter. He watches the rice fields, mountains and jungle fade into the distance, and leaves his island behind forever. It deals with the question of how a father/son bound can be preserved in the situation of a gender transition (of the father, in our case). As references, we can quote “Transmerica” or the TV Series “Transparent”. These themes are more and more often delt with in the US public debate, and as a consequence in the US film industry (see the very mainstream “Danish girl”). Though it’s not a comedy, “Lola pater” is not a heavy drama. Synopsis "The Observer Effect" is an elevated thriller. The story begins with Paul Benson, a young quantum mathematician, in his apartment when it mysteriously explodes. Four days before Paul discovered a new way to encrypt communications. Non-linear and unexpected, the film reveals what happened to Paul in those four days. During which he becomes the target of a complex web of criminal, business and government organisations. Paul’s story is told from the perspective of four different characters, each going back in time incrementally by one day. The first point of view is Branca’s, a Latvian student with a secret past whom Paul’s in love with. Second is his brother Sean’s perspective, with whom he severed all relations seven years ago. Third is Evelyn’s, a thirty-five year old woman from New York who was his first love. And last is Jonathan’s, his mentor at the University and supposedly closest friend. Each perspective tells a different version of the same story and as the film progresses we discover how Paul’s discovery has become the ultimate goal of everybody’s secret agenda. Paul unwittingly descends into hell as the threat grows from those people he loves the most, through betrayals, disillusionment and the demons of his past. His relationship to love, brotherhood, friendship and work will be shattered. He can only rely upon himself to solve the most important equation his life depends on… The audience and the characters form different views of the unfolding story. At the end, none of the characters know the truth. Only the viewer can know what really happened. 32 — FRENCH PROJECTs FRENCH PROJECTs — 33 IDEALE AUDIENCE Pierre-Olivier Bardet 6 rue de l’Agent Bailly , 75009 PARIS. Based on the research carried out by German writer Marc Fischer in a book for which we acquired the rights, our film follows in the writer’s footsteps, but goes beyond his “failed” attempts to meet Gilberto. The intensity of the film project, is heightened by the dramatic circumstances of Marc’s death – he committed suicide one week before his book was published – and by the power of the elements of his investigation, which he left for his parents to give to us: photos, sound recordings, notes, etc. João Gilberto’s character emerges little by little through Marc Fischer's off-beat, intense personality. Behind the musician, a whole other world comes to the fore, Brazil in the 1960s, an era in which everything seemed possible: the national football team won its second World Cup; Niemeyer, the revolutionary architect, built the country’s new capital in the desert; and the Bossa Nova climbed to the top of the world’s hit parades. The conjunction of a personality as powerful as that of João Gilberto, the ingredients of an established narrative form in film – a Sherlock Holmes-style investigation, and all the humour that goes with that – seems promising. Filmcoopi and Doc & Films shared our conviction. After his three “Brazilian films”, Georges Gachot had earned himself a place of choice – and the trust – of Brazilian artists and their entourage: Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque etc. It is thanks to them that we feel we can succeed. What form will it take? We don't know and that's where the suspense of the film lies. WHERE ARE YOU, JOAO GILBERTO ? English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fischer describes his obsessive search for the last musical legend of our time, the founding father of the Bossa Nova, the Brazilian musician João Gilberto, who hasn’t been seen in public for decades. By taking up Marc Fischer’s quest, following his steps one by one, thanks to all the clues he left us, taking it even further than he could thanks to film and a knowledge of the terrain that the German journalist didn’t always have, we pursue João Gilberto to understand the history, the very soul and essence of Bossa Nova. The research and its ups and downs forms the narrative arch, the history of the Bossa Nova is the content and meeting João Gilberto like Hitchcock’s MacGuffin. But who can tell whether we will meet him or not? 34 — FRENCH PROJECTs FRENCH PROJECTs — 35 LES FILMS DE L’AUTRE COUGAR English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . We did his film “Haramist” together, bought by Arte and released in cinemas last July. Widely acclaimed by critics, it revealed the amazing actresses Souad Arsane and Inas Chanti. “Yasmina’s fling” talks about the emancipation of a young woman struggling with her desires and what she is supposed to do in order to be “a good girl” socially, religiously and culturally. By staying close to the anxieties and Yasmina’s unanswered questions, Antoine wants to create empathy and take the viewers beyond the divisions between socio-cultural and religious milieu. Each young woman discovers her sexuality and wonders what she can do to remain respectable. Struggling through the violence of words and gesture, Yasmina looks for correctness and justice. In nowadays social and sensitive context that prevails in France, we are passionate about questioning each other’s feelings and opinions. This film does not aim to make all communities agree: it plays with stereotypes in order to break them. This freedom of tone is a real breath of fresh air in the cinematic landscape. 36 — FRENCH PROJECTs YASMINA’S FLING Synopsis Yasmina and Rim, two Muslim sisters of 17 and 18, live in a suburb family. Rim and her boyfriend Majid orchestrate a meeting between Yasmina and Salim (Majid’s best friend). Soon, both of couple isolate themselves… Yasmina discovers sensuality and the possibility of extramarital sexuality. Rim has to travel in snow class. As she collapses to be separated from Majid, in solidarity Yasmina promises not to see Salim either. But Salim invites her to a party. She finally goes and joins Salim and Majid there. Salim asks Yasmina to « relieve » Majid from his sexual needs, pretending that Rim did the same with Salim in the past. Taking remorse the next day, Yasmina admits to Salim she will tell everything to Rim. Salim confesses that he lied with Majid’s complicity: Rim never had any fling with the two boys. Yasmina is revolted. She dumps Salim, determined to convince her sister to break as well. Then begins the blackmail that Yasmina will have to fight against. Salim threats to show the compromising photos he made of her in action, asks her to keep silence and to continue to satisfy him sexually. Yasmina has to accept. Gradually she’s divided between the feeling of revolt and the pleasure she discovers with Salim. When Rim learns of Yasmina’s secret, the two sisters fall out with one another. Yasmina runs away from home and meets the young dealer, Baba. When Yasmina finally comes back after two days, Rim is so relieved that the two sisters reconciliate. When Rim realizes that the boys trapped Yasmina, Rim decides to flip the situation and blackmail the boys. After having discovered men through abuse and violence, Yasmina discovers love. She fully assumes her gesture, running to Baba under Rim’s cover. The duo’s first feature, NOOR, shot in Pakistan, premiered in Cannes in 2012 in the ACID section, travelled to more than 80 festivals and won 15 prizes. NINGEN, their second feature, shot in Japan, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and travelled to many festivals worldwide. With SIBEL, Cagla and Guillaume go back to their original land, Turkey, to tell a story about the fury to live, to exist, to choose. Despite her handicap, Sibel has made the irrevocable yet paradoxical decision to choose who she is going to marry. The film shows the struggle of a young Turkish woman against her nature and against society. Sibel knows her limits, her strength, and knows what to do to get what she wants. She comes from a rural and traditional surrounding, she wears a scarf on her head, she barely went to school, yet she’s truly a modern woman, this modernity being present within her instinct rather than in her mind. Just like Rosetta in the Dardennes’ film, she fights, she refuses, she gets knocked down, yet, she manages to get back up again and mostly, she gets to choose. She chooses Ali, the political poet from Istanbul, from the city, who stumbled in her territory, in her web, in her trap. SIBEL is an original love story driven by a determined female character. It is also an ode to life. We truly believe in the potential of this film to reach both A-category festivals and the international market. The project is actually in development. We are looking for a German co-producer in order to build a France-Turkey-Germany co-production structure. 38 — FRENCH PROJECTs SIBEL English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In this village, at the intersection of a series of steep valleys, one finds a unique method of communication which has been developed over numerous generations: a rich and detailed language of whistles, which allows the villagers to express themselves across distances of several kilometers. Among the villagers, we find Sibel, a young woman of twenty-five. She is unmarried and still lives with her father, Avni, the conservative mayor of the village. Sibel lost the ability to speak when she was a child. Her only way to communicate with her relatives is the whistle language. Sibel has always been quite solitary. She works with ardor in the fields, harvesting tea, hazelnuts and corn. Treating her like an idiot because of her handicap, her father has always tried to marry her with simple minded men from around. But Sibel is strong : a savage beauty, instinctively modern and independent, determined to choose by herself who will be her husband. Extraordinary”. There she was, Miriam. Holding my hands. Looking at me. Looking through me. Soon, I was adopted. And then I met Peter Brook. He made us a wonderful gift by letting us three watch and shoot their rehearsals. Something he had never done before, except for his son. With Les Produits Frais, I have already produced several narrative shorts and two mid-length documentary. I am now developing a feature length fiction called Sun and taking place in the indian community of Paris. Worlds in between is my project for a creative documentary film. We are at a key moment of the production and in search for partners. To film some more. To edit. To translate. To bring a strong team around this ambitious project about two very ambitious and talented artists, Miriam Goldschmidt and Peter Brook. What we have here in store is a wonderful testimony on contemporary European theater. 40 — FRENCH PROJECTs Synopsis Miriam Goldschmidt: actress, musician, director, magician of words and expression. After studying with Jacques Lecoq in Paris, she joined Peter Brook’s Theatre-Safari through Africa and became a member of his legendary Centre International de Recherche Théâtrale with which Brook revolutionized the world of theatre in the 1970s. Despite working with many icons of theatre including Peter Stein, Jean Genet, Luc Bondy, Peter Zadek and George Tabori and directing plays of her own to great success, Goldschmidt always returned to Brook, with whom she shares an almost 50-year-old liaison d'amour as well as an inspiring professional relationship. Worlds in between is an intimate cinematic portrait of Miriam Goldschmidt. The film follows Miriam and Peter from the first rehearsal to the opening night of their latest play, an adaptation of Samuel Beckett. The film juxtaposes past scenes of Miriam`s career with her everyday life: a life lived to the extreme, in which great artistic success collides with devastating strokes of fate, excess and phases of deep despair. Miriam’s first years in an Christian orphanage near Frankfurt where she was abused by cruel sisters, the early death of her first love, her own disrupted family and the recent suicide of her daughter Amba all left deep scars – and painful memories with which Miriam Goldschmidt battles to this very day. Besides following her work with Peter, Worlds in between accompanies Miriam to Berlin, Basel, Frankfurt, Paris and to Africa, where Miriam once more meets many of the defining figures in her life - and finds herself confronted with the recurring themes of death, love, art, pain, identity and addiction. Diary entries, conversations and places intermingle with archive material from Miriam`s illustrious career: The Conference of the Birds, Les Iks, Mahabharata, Der Dibbuk, Glückliche Tage and Warum Warum. A mirror not only of crowning moments of the history of 20th century theatre, but also of the highs and lows of this charismatic and unique artist`s time. He is an exceptional observer, gifted with an eye and ear of extreme vivacity, able to tackle all styles, all forms of cinema with equal acuteness”. Édouard Waintrop (President of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight), whilst a journalist at Libération, wrote of J.F. Stévenin’s last film Mischka, “There are miracles in this collection of lost souls all ages … French cinema has barely accustomed us to such pleasures of contemplation”. With three films to his name, A Fairy in the Rear-view Mirror signals the “grand return” of an exceptional filmmaker. After Passe-Montagne, winner of the FIPRESCI prize at Venice in 1979, Double Messieurs in 1986, and Mischka, winner of the France Culture Prize at Cannes 2002, Stévenin has established himself as a cult director in France, with many naming him “The French Cassavetes”. His work is singular and exudes a strong personality. A Fairy in the Rear-view Mirror, the filmmaker’s new project, is an artistically ambitious film, partly autobiographical, and positions itself in the European market for auteur cinema. The presence of Louis-Ferdinand Céline, the emblematic 20th Century author whose works sold in millions around the world, penetrates the film, a zany plunge into History and Literature. Possessing a strong Franco-German and European potential, the film traverses the Second World War and the exile of Louis-Ferdinand Céline in Germany. Fascinated by the literature of Louis-Ferdinand Céline and in particular by the book North, he meets one day Lucette, the widow of his favourite writer. From this day on, he will never leave her. While in Germany visiting Frau Moser, his second mother, and still engrossed in North and Lucette’s stories, Jeff cannot resist the desire to visit the landmarks of Céline and Lucette’s escape to Germany. In Jeff’s head, the beacon - North - lights up, the voice of Lucette is superimposed and we follow his slide into 1945 and into Germany in flames… The idea to make a film of it enters his mind… More than a third of the film will take place in Germany. We estimate the German financing of the project to be between 30-40% of the budget of the film. Despite the fact it was written there over a century, this story still resonates eerily with clean themes in our current society. Indeed, Stevenson is found on the roads long before the hour to write and find his way through a spiritual quest. His adventurous journey, due among others to his illness and dangerousness of the time roads will cause the path of the same name which is now the most popular every year after that of Compostela. This trip will allow him both to overcome life all mapped out as destined by his family, finding his own way, writing, but also to find the woman he loves. His trip is twofold. Both outward and toward oneself, both discovery and introspection. The scenario was first assisted in the writing of the Rhône-Alpes region and development aid from the CNC and the project also arrived in plenary at 1 college advance on earnings in December 2014. He also convinced Goudineau Daniel, director of the fiction of France 3 Cinéma, who gave us his agreement for the co-production and dissemination of the project. The main actors will be English or American (Andy), French (Helene), German (Philip Steiner), Mexican (Miguel Diaz). Produced for the domestic and international market, his feature film is in fact a spiritual trip which takes the form of a violent initiation, with multiple meanings. It takes us from Western Europe into the Mexican jungle, where the Mayan Indians live, being the last "cultural survivors" of the Spanish Conquest. One will discover that the main protagonists, Andy, Helene, Philip Steiner and his wife Ava, the Cyclop are caught in an adventure with the "Pre-Columbian Art" existing in the "Old Europe" inside the drawing rooms. These gems are owned by art lovers, kept in good conscience - or perhaps in the absence of conscience - of the "Western World". One will then follow these objects to Mexico City, meet other strange characters; Miguel Diaz, Pedro Ochoa, Juana, the Thompsons and the Indians in Modern Mexico. Here is where man, with his Native Indian spirit kept intact from before the Spanish Conquest, desperately tries not to die in the drama of the big cities' poverty and acculturation. One end up in the Mayan province of Yucatan, where Indians live only from the earth, water and natural resources from where they extract these coveted art objects. In this land one is often faced with diseases, fireguns of great landlords and political or drug related guerillas. All this in a sort of lost paradise where the Indians may keep on living or re-living. THE HOUSE OF THE JAGUAR English title:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It takes place under Paris in places forbidden to the public and therefor unknown and fantasized. UNDER PARIS is an unusual survival movie, with a universal theme causing pure sensations and providing a physical experience to the spectator through the heroine. In the end Under Paris is altogether a drama and a survival movie: an overall unexplored genre in France. The stripped down concept will go hand in hand with a specific shooting method: natural sets only and a reduced team. All that is described in the story really exists; it’s the result of the film director’s many location recces. Corinne Garfin is a mature director who already directed six short films awarded in many international festivals. We know her well since we produced her last movie, and have faith in her talents. 50 — FRENCH PROJECTs Synopsis Alice is 27 and she’s starting a new job: quarry-working at IGC, the public service in charge of the surveillance of hundreds of kilometers of Paris’ old tunnels – situated thirty meters underground, without any electricity or means of communications. That morning her team discovers an old dump of toxic liquids hidden in a dead-end. Just as they’re about to leave, the ground, weakened by these chemical products, collapses under them. ALICE is unharmed but finds herself prisoner of a heap of rocks, in a genuine stone coffin! Fortunately her colleague GABY, alive as well, gets her out of there. They understand that they’ve fallen into a very old quarry that dates back to the Middle-Ages – immense, unknown, unmapped and with only horizon a mineral, instable and obscure universe. They decide to wait for help but soon realize that they’re the sole survivors… They need to leave in search for a hypothetical exit through a maze of onerous and wild galleries filled of cul-de-sac, with the rare traces left by old quarry-workers for only guidance. It doesn’t take long for GABY to discover ALICE’s heavy secret: she’s grieving her boyfriend, who died in an accident. Since then she’s lost the will to live fully and choses to spend her days in the darkness and loneliness of tunnels… Their progression is difficult, the hoped exit leaved them languishing. ALICE, fatalist, loses heart fast. Fortunately GABY is there to maintain hope and make her aware that life is still possible, just like these roots that break through the rocks around them, originating from the trees planted ten meters above them, like the water that climbs up groundwater tables, or like the stalactites they bump into. Unfortunately just as they believe to have found an exit GABY suffers terribly from a fall into a well. Dying, GABY makes ALICE promise that she will manage to get out alone. Soon she finds herself in a great struggle to survive, confronted more and more to dangerous situations and increasingly obsessed by her painful past. To make her way out, she will need to overcome her grief and regain the desire to live. The Second World War has begun, but Zigis's childhood is as carefree as before; he goes to school and plays with his friends and his trusted companion, his dog Džeris. In 1941, Latvia is occupied by the German army. Repressions begin against the Jews. Zanis, Zigis's father, works at the Luftwaffe factory in Riga to which Jews are taken every day from the ghetto. An enthusiastic and fearless adventurer, he thinks of a way to save the Jews working at the factory but condemned to a certain death. In the yard of his house, he digs a bunker to hide them. Zigis becomes a witness to these events. Zanis's decision changes both his and his mother Johanna's life from completely. Their precarious wartime existence is further endangered: hiding Jews is punishable by death and even young Zigis would not be spared. By helping the Jews, Zanis has robbed the simple familial happiness that Zigis so wishes for. In time, Zigis understands his father's humanity and this experience changes him from a careless and dreamy boy to a mature adolescent who is fully aware of the cruelty of war. The film is a story of growing up against the background of the tragic events of the 20th century.
