o general acclaim, President James Michel announced during his Independence Day speech, measures
meant to improve the lives of
public sector employees and
pensioners. A few of these declarations have proven controversial and they have raised the ire
of some in such circles, namely
the political ones. The first some
people heard of a 13th month
salary increment, was in May
when the Seychelles National
Party (SNP), was announcing
its political manifesto, should it
come into power.

No hotel at
Cap Ternay
President Michel has placed a moratorium on all large
hotel builds in the country.
“
Today I want to put a stop, once and for all, to all these speculations.
There will be no construction of any hotel at Cap Ternay”. This statement was made by the President of the Republic, James Michel, on
Monday 29 June in his speech on the occasion of the National Day celebrations. This comes after sceptics were saying that the President could
change his mind once elections had taken place, should he win. However,
during his speech, President Michel firmly put the issue at rest. Furthermore, a moratorium preventing any other large hotels from being built
in the country has been placed with immediate effect by the President.
However, he stated, this does not include “those projects for which approval has already been granted, or for which a commitment had been
made by Government.” As of now, it remains unclear how many projects
had already been approved before the moratorium came into effect.

13th month salary for public sector

For the SNP, President Michel’s announcement is being
interpreted as a blatant political move. According to Wavel
Ramkalawan, the leader of
the Seychelles National Party
(SNP), the timing of this announcement is questionable
due to the fact that elections
are thought to be just around
the corner.
“This Government has been
in power for a very long time
and nothing regarding the
thirteenth month salary has
ever been made mention of.
The President only came up
with this proposal regards
public servants after the SNP
revealed their intentions. Why
is that? Is it because SNP mentioned it first? Why has it taken
the President this long to announce this increment? Why
was it not announced five or
ten years ago?”
In May, the SNP announced
that if they came into power, all
public servants would be paid a
13th month salary, regardless of
their position in society inclusive of all Ministers and Members of the National Assembly.
Mr. Ramkalawan went on
to say that “we have learnt
through Nation on Saturday
that there was in actuality no
leak in the Finance and Trade
Department as previously
claimed by Principal Secretary
Patrick Payet. Instead, they are
now saying that there was a
loophole”.
According to the President’s
speech, the 13th month salary
will be offered to all employees
based on their performance.
However, the criteria has not
been set yet.
Regarding the President’s
SCR500 increment announcement starting in December
this year for those on social security, such as pensioners, this
is as a means of improving the
standards of living for them.
Mr. Martin Aglae, the Public
Wavel Ramkalawan,
Leader of Seyche
Relations Officer for the SNP
stated that “the SNP also gives
its commitment to review the
present system of pension for
politicians to correspond to
what is applicable for workers in general. Workers of Seychelles need to be properly rewarded. We seek to give people
financial control over their
affairs and monetary independence.”
“Our people have made
enough sacrifices. Now is the
time to give every worker a
better deal, with the hope that
families will be strengthened
and our society will once again
adhere to a higher standard of
work ethics. We need to move
people away from welfare to
employment”, concluded Mr.
Ramkalawan.
Whether or not it was a wise
political move by President
Michel at the end of the day,
remains to be seen. The bigger
questions on everyone’s minds
are where the money will come
from to fund these plans and
who will have to bear the burden of such largesse.
can scientific community as an
influential member of the global
scientific community, through
strengthened tripartite engagement between the scientific and
higher education community;
the industrial and corporate sector, and high level policy makers.
This initiative will celebrate African science and scientists, while
building global competitiveness.
It is expected that through the
NEF, there will be enhanced
contribution of Africa’s youth to
scientific entrepreneurship, innovation and inventiveness, including creation of the next ‘Einstein’ level of emerging scientists.
Science, technology, engineering
and mathematics are powerful
forces for the achievement of
progress in the global economy.
For Africa to fully benefit from
these forces to address continental challenges and opportunities,
it must build a strong indigenous
capacity in these disciplines.
This signing comes as the African Union Commission takes
steps to achieve Agenda 2063
- the vision of Africa by Africans
for the next 50 years. This collaboration envisaged between
AIMS and the AUC will therefore
empower young Africans to excel
in science, technology and innovation, thereby contributing towards
the achievement of the goals of

Africa’s youth and women.

Dear Editor
Thanks for a space in your newspaper. I am currently being employed by Banyan Tree Resort and Spa and I’ve been there for approximate three years.
It is my feeling and those of my colleagues that we are being
robbed by our Financial Controller, General Manager and Human
Resource Manager. After this team was put into place at the resort,
everything changed. From the bonus that we used to receive every
six months (we were due last month), we have not heard anything
as yet. The month was quite busy at the hotel, especially with the
arrival of a particular Arabic family, who spent seven days there –
some people have had to work morning until the next and off days
have been cancelled. All of this was because the Arabs were spending unbelievable amounts of money. Yet, the service charge is the
lowest it has ever been.
What is the most annoying is the Financial Controller who spends
his day smiling as if he’s in on some personal joke. We work extremely hard at this resort and in March and April, some staff went
on strike. Management terminated some of them, whilst others
were given a final warning. Obviously, no one will dare do it again,
as we all have families to support. So, they know that we will not do
anything to jeopardize our jobs, as we have nowhere to turn. Even
the Department of Employment is refusing to look into the matter.
We are writing this article so that the whole world will know that
despite some of these big hotels looking pretty on the outside, the
amount of hardship that the employees are working under is equal
to slavery.
Thank you for the space in your newspaper,
A Concerned Employee

Yes we did!
How will America’s decision on same-sex marriage affect Seychelles?
I
t’s official. The United States
of America (USA) legalised
same-sex marriages on Friday 26 June in all 50 states. As
the churches rally in an effort
to thwart the doom and gloom
heading USA’s way – à la Sodom and Gomorrah, we should
all realise the implications of
this court decision. The world is
shrinking and everything is interlinked. As with the same-sex
wedding held on our very shores
recently, we should come to the
realisation that we do not live
within a vacuum and that the
decisions made in the outside
world can have far-reaching implications, even to our small island state.
The gay rights movement is
quickly gaining momentum all
over the world. Only last month
Ireland, a devoutly Christian nation backed same-sex marriages
by a landslide in a referendum.
Opinion polls in America are
also showing that homosexuality
has gained increasing acceptance
in recent years, particularly with
the younger generations. Should
then the question be ‘when’ will
same-sex marriages be made legal in Seychelles as opposed to
‘will’?
Although the US Supreme
Court’s 5-4 ruling was no landslide by any stretch of the
imagination, what is interesting
though, is that it points to how
much accumulated power there
is in “we the people”. Case in
point; Hillary Rodham Clinton,
currently running for President
in the USA, has a complicated
history with gay rights. Her husband, Bill Clinton, who was the
President of the USA from 1993
– 2001, during his mandate,
signed the Defence of Marriage
Act (DOMA), which prohibited
the federal government from
recognising same-sex marriages.
Mr. Clinton also approved the
controversial “don’t ask, don’t
tell” bill, which had prevented
openly gay men and women
from serving in the US military.
Bill Clinton has come forward
as recently as 2013 to admit that
he regretted signing DOMA into
law – just in time for his wife’s
run at presidency.
Gay rights activists have been
burning the midnight oil finding ways to promote their cause
inch by excruciating inch and
it is thanks to their effort that
shows like Ellen Degeneres is
now accepted, when only a few
years earlier Degeneres’ comedic show ‘Ellen’ got pulled from
TV because it was felt that it was
not ‘right’ to have an openly gay
woman as a lead character in a
show. It is thanks in part to these
gay rights activists, promoting
continuous portrayal of homosexuals in sympathetic roles in
the media, that people are more
open and accepting towards homosexuals today in America and
in other parts of the world. The
LGBT movement is now recognised as a force to be reckoned
with and should it be said, their
power as voters and their influ-
ence over family and friends.
Fabianna Bonne made some
very pertinent points in her recent interview in our paper of
22 June 2015. According to her,
politicians “would rather have
the majority on their side and
gay people are viewed to be a
minority” currently. However, as
she goes on to say “each gay person has friends and belongs to
a family... I speak to all of them
and I could very much convince
them to vote or not to vote for
a particular person depending
on how I feel they would treat
the issue of human rights”. If we
think of Fabianna’s comments
on a wider scale, let us assume
that every openly gay person in
Seychelles can influence their
friends and families to vote for
those who would have their best
interests at heart. Fabianna observed that “it’s very interesting
now that we are celebrating our
Constitution which affirms our
rights and I believe this argument would sway people. It
would definitely sway people
who are close to those who feel
their rights are being violated.
This is what happened in Ireland that is also a very Catholic
country and where 62% of people voted for equal rights for the
gay community. Politicians fail
to recognise that”.
Should we be looking forward
to LGBT-friendly content in the
electoral campaigns in the next
elections?
Excerpts from the interview with Fabianna Bonne:
Hillary Clinton’s feed on Twitter.
Where did the Greek bailout
money go?
Less than 10% of the money was used by the government for reforming its economy and
safeguarding weaker members of society.
TODAY: You must have noticed that during this debate, not one politician has spoken out for
equal rights. Does this bother you?
Fabianna Bonne: I think that being politicians they would rather have the majority on their side and
gay people are viewed to be a minority. I will not hold it against them; if I were a politician, this would
be what I would do too but we have to think of this on a larger scale. Each gay person has friends and
belongs to a family. In my family, I have my mother and her five brothers and sisters and they have
children of voting age. I speak to all of them and I could very much convince them to vote or not to
vote for a particular person depending on how I feel they would treat the issue of human rights.
TODAY: Would voters in Seychelles be swayed by the human rights argument, you think?
Fabianna Bonne: Human rights is something that a lot of people talk about in Seychelles. It’s very
interesting now that we’re are celebrating our Constitution which affirm our rights and I believe this
argument would sway people. It would definitely sway people who are close to those who feel their
rights are being violated. This is what happened in Ireland that is also a very Catholic country and
where 62% of people voted for equal rights for the gay. Politicians fail to recognise that. They have
the air for a few hours but I spend all of my time with my family. They know me and they care about
me. Who will they trust more? A person they see every five years or a person they know, a person they
see every day? They understand the issues I have to deal with, the pain that I go through and the suffering that I have to endure.
By setting a poll in Victoria yesterday, TODAY was able to get an idea how a portion of the general
population are feeling about the issue.
The questions asked in the survey:

O
nly a small fraction of
the EUR240 billion total
bailout money Greece
received in 2010 and 2012,
found its way into the government’s coffers to soften the blow
of the 2008 financial crash and
fund reform programmes. Most
of the money went to the banks
that lent Greece funds before
the crash.
Unlike most of Europe, which
ran up large budget deficits to
protect pensioners and welfare
recipients, Athens was then
forced to dramatically reduce
its deficit by squeezing pensions and cutting the minimum
wage. The lenders first stepped
in during the spring of 2010,
after Athens could no longer af-
ford to finance EUR310 billion
borrowed from a wide range of
major European banks.
Two years later, the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
European Commission and
European Central Bank (ECB)
came up with a second bailout
that centred on a EUR100 billion debt write-off by private
sector lenders. Private bondholders saw the value of their
bonds drop by 53% and took a
further loss by exchanging the
debt for securities with a lower
interest rate.
This
eliminated
about
EUR100 billion of debt, but
EUR34 billion was used to pay
for various “sweeteners” to get
the deal accepted. That EUR34
billion was added to the already
outstanding Greek debt. Greek
pension funds, which were major private lenders, also suffered
terrible losses. Then EUR48.2
billion was used to bail out
Greek banks, which had been
forced to take losses, weakening their ability to protect themselves and depositors.
Lastly, EUR140 billion has
been spent on paying the original debts and interest. Less than
10% of the bailout money was
left to be used by the government
for reforming its economy and
safeguarding weaker members of
society. Greek government debt
is still about EUR320 billion. As
the Jubilee Debt Campaign says:
“The bailouts have been for the
European financial sector, while
passing the debt from being
owed to the private sector to the
public sector.”

change? And if yes, do you foresee it happening
in the next 5 years?
69 percent think that YES homosexuals should
have the same rights as any ordinary citizen such
as civil marriage. However the majority of those
who said YES, were clearly against homosexuals
adopting children. It is important to note that the
majority of those in the 69 percent were in their
20’s, 30’s and early 40’s. The older generation represented the 31 percent of those who said NO.
56 percent do not think that Seychelles is ready for
such a change in legislature and believe it might
take longer than five years before the Government
or the local community accepts same sex equality.
One person said:
• “Ten years ago, I would have said NO. But earlier this year, my own daughter told me that she
feels confused and scared. My duty as a father is
to be there for her and try to understand her situation. Otherwise, I might risk losing her. It’s not
easy to accept it at first but I look at the bigger
picture which is my daughter’s happiness at the
end of the day,” said a 49 year old father.
Do you think Seychelles is ready for such a
One person said:
• “This is not about if Seychelles is ready for such
changes. Changes will happen anyway regardless
of what politicians say and if the majority speaks
out, I’m sure the government will have no option
but to accept same sex equality,” said a 60 year old
man.
Do you know any homosexuals and what is your
relationship with them?
Out of the 100 individuals that were interviewed,
only 16 percent claimed to know homosexuals personally. Out of that 16 percent, only three claimed
to be homosexuals.

Copa America
Chile edge 10-man Peru to book final berth after 28 years
E
duardo Vargas scored twice
as Chile downed fierce rivals
Peru 2-1 here Monday to
reach the Copa America final for
the first time in nearly 30 years.
Vargas, who endured a miserable season on loan at relegated English Premier League side
Queens Park Rangers, lashed in a
stunning 64th-minute strike as the
hosts advanced to the final for the
first time since 1987.
Vargas had given Chile a controversial lead after 42 minutes, prodding home from close range after
the referee’s assistant failed to spot
a fractional offside.
Peru, who played most of the
match with 10 men after Carlos
Zambrano was sent off for a reckless challenge on Charles Aranguiz
after 20 minutes, came back bravely to force an equaliser through a
Gary Medel own goal in the 60th
minute.
But Vargas, who also had a legitimate goal wrongly ruled out for
offside early in the second half, restored Chile’s lead with a contender for goal of the tournament.
The 25-year-old picked up a
loose ball in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a ferocious
dipping 30-yard effort that flew
into the top corner past Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.
Chile will now play the winner
of Tuesday’s semi-final between
Argentina and Paraguay as they
chase a first ever Copa America
crown after 99 years of failure.
The latest instalment of Chile
and Peru’s long football rivalry --
The last time Chile had made it to the Copa America final was in 1987 when it lost to Uruguay.
known as the “Clasico del Pacifico” -- burst into life after only four
minutes, when Chile’s Arturo Vidal
tangled angrily with Zambrano.
Vidal was fortunate to escape
at least a booking for thrusting a
hand in Zambrano’s face as tempers threatened to boil over.
Moments later, Venezuelan referee Jose Argota moved to nip the
tensions in the bud, showing Zambrano a yellow card for tugging
down Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.
Yet while Chile made the brighter
start, it was Peru that came closest
to scoring in the opening minutes,
with Jefferson Farfan’s header from
a Paolo Guerrero cross cannoning
back off the woodwork.
The match turned in the 20th
The Chileans have been dominant from the start of this year’s tournament, playing at home with its best team in years.
minute after Zambrano’s dismissal.
The centre-half was given his
marching orders after catching
Charles Aranguiz with an ugly
studs-up challenge as he followed
through after a clearance.
Sensing
Peru’s
vulnerability, Chile turned up the pressure
and might have opened the scoring through Jorge Valdivia on 28
minutes, only for the influential
playmaker’s curling shot to fly just
wide.
Six minutes later, Chile were
denied again when Peru defender
Luis Advincula produced a superb
last-ditch block from Vargas to
clear.
Three minutes before half-time,
though, Peru’s resistance broke
when Sanchez’s cross from the left
bounced back off the inside of the
upright for Vargas to bundle home
from close range.
The goal was harsh on Peru,
though, as replays showed Vargas was fractionally offside when
Sanchez crossed.
Chile sought to press home their
advantage after the break and Vargas was unlucky to see a superb
volleyed goal ruled out.
Peru clawed their way back into
the contest on the hour mark when
Guerrero released Advincula down
the right.
The fullback’s cross caused havoc in the Chile area and Medel
panicked and prodded home past
Claudio Bravo.
Peru’s
celebrations
were
shortlived though when Vargas
crashed in his winning goal four
minutes later.

off winning grass form on Monday
to lead men’s seeds into the second
round of Wimbledon.
Top seed Djokovic, the Australian Open holder chasing a third

the 30-year-old Swiss. “I’m happy

when the grass is so fresh.
“The most important thing is to

into the net to start the momentum
rolling for the world number one.
“All three sets were decided in the

Former champion Maria Sharapova, seeded fourth, beat Brit Johanna Konta 6-2, 6-2, while seventh
seed Ana Ivanovic crushed China’s
Xu Yi-Fan 6-1, 6-1. The Russian was
also back on court after three weeks
away.
“I was quite pleased with the way
things went today. It was my first
competitive match in about four
weeks, so I just wanted to start off
really strong, not knowing much
about my opponent,” said Sharapova.
“Coming in without any proper
grass court matches, I just wanted to
take care of business, and I thought
I did a good job of that today.” Konta reached the quarter-finals a week
ago in Eastbourne.
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko upset
Spanish ninth seed Carla Suarez
Navarro 6-2, 6-0 and number 11
Czech Karolina Pliskova beat Irina
Falconi 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Former number one Victoria Azarenka advanced
past Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-2,
6-1.
Eastbourne champion Belinda
Bencic followed up two days after
her first career title, beating Tsvetana Pironkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
A pair of seeds scored double
bagels, with Andrea Petkovic hammering Shelby Rogers and former
winner Venus Williams giving nothing to compatriot Madison Brengle.

Prime Estates
A different sunset everyday
Every first Wednesday of the month, TODAY, in collaboration with Arriva Real Estate, brings you a comprehensive guide to buying and selling property in Seychelles. Please send
us your questions and queries on real estate topics and we shall endeavour to have them answered by Arriva. Our next Prime Estates feature will run on August 5.
By A. De Giorgio
M
ost people would love
to have a property by
the sea but for some,
their dream home is situated
somewhere on a hilltop, enjoying breathtaking views of green
valleys and granite mountains.
In our previous segments of
Prime Estates we explored the
ins and outs of buying or selling a piece of land in Seychelles,
the criteria for non-Seychellois
seeking to buy property for residential purposes and the pros
and cons of owning a beachfront
property or renting a place in
Seychelles. We also unveiled the
advantages of hiring ARRIVA one of the leading licensed real
estate agents in Seychelles with
11 years of experience.
In this month’s issue, the managing director of Arriva Real Estate, Vivian Rassool, presents us
with a spectacular property for
sale on the hilltops of Beau Vallon. Mr Rassool explained that
the hilltop villa, which boasts
of stunning panoramic views
and magnificent sunsets is located in an excellent residential
area on the northwest coast of
Mahé and situated only a few
minutes’ walk from the popular
Beau Vallon beach. With a total
living area of almost 366 square
metres, the four-bedroom airconditioned villa consists of
two bathrooms, a fitted kitchen
and an open plan living/dining
room. The main living, dining and kitchen are all in the
middle of the house with two
bedrooms on either side. All
the four bedrooms open onto
the large decking with each enjoying breathtaking views. The
walled-in property is equipped
with motion alarm system and
electric gate. Furthermore, there
is a water-catchment system installed where rain water can be
collected into two water tanks
with a total capacity of 10,000
litres.
The architecture, says Mr Rassool, along with its large wooden
veranda, provides the right feel
for island living at its best but
he stresses that the highlight of
the property is the beauty of its
landscape and well maintained
garden. “The property is situated in such an ideal location
which allows its owners to enjoy
the very best of both lives, one
being secluded away from the
noise or traffic and the other
being a few metres away from
an area renowned for its restaurants, luxurious hotels and lively
ambiance,” said Mr Rassool.

Eden Bleu celebrates National Day in grand style
After the anticipation which heralded the presence of British reggae hit band UB40 last year at the opening of the Eden Bleu Hotel, the establishment undoubtedly made itself the
talk of the town once again for weeks to come by hosting a glitzy event on Saturday 27 June.
By A. De Giorgio
I
Eden Bleu went the extra mile in celebrating National Day by hosting a glamorous soiree
magine yourself walking
through a lobby with high
ceilings, marble columns
and chandeliers, then to step
into a room and realise you
are surrounded by some of the
most influential people in society, dressed up to the nines in
their fashionable tuxedos, suits
and red carpet dresses. In the
background, all one hears is the
clinking sounds of wine glasses
and the captivating 1920’s jazz
and blues music. Nope, you have
not been transported into the
pages of The Great Gatsby, but
you might be forgiven for thinking so. This was the glamorous
Grand Ball of Eden Bleu, which
took place on Saturday 27 June,
alongside the National Day celebrations.
The elite guest list attending
the glitzy event consisted of Vice
President Danny Faure, several
cabinet ministers and foreign
dignitaries as well as prominent business leaders. The host
of the night was Eden Island’s
chairman, Craig Heeger, who
in a short speech, welcomed his
guests and explained that the
event was simply a token of his
appreciation towards all those
who supported the Eden Island
development project, which is
about to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year.
“We’ve certainly came a long
way from that day I fell in love
with Seychelles and the Eden Island project. It was not an easy
journey but we succeeded at the
end of the day, thanks to the hard
work, sacrifices and commitment
put in by our employees. I also
take this opportunity to thank
all those who shared our vision
and supported us through thick
and thin. We are so proud to be
part of Seychelles, to the point
we feel the urge to celebrate the
National Day with you all,” said
Mr Heeger.

Did you know…?
• Whitetip reef sharks are one of
the most common sharks on IndoPacific coral reefs.
• Females give birth to 1-6 pups every other year after a gestation period
of 10-13 months.
• They are classified as ‘near threatened’. Their slow rate of reproduction
and late maturity makes them vul-
nerable to overfishing
• They prefer clear water and rarely
swim far from the bottom. During
the day they rest in caves or overhangs
• Unlike many sharks they do not
need to keep swimming to breath
they can pump water over their gills
and lay still
Approximately a quarter of all shark
and ray species are listed as ‘endangered’ on the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources (IUCN) Red List. Due
to the many threats they face, white
tip reef sharks are classified as ‘near
threatened’. Direct threats to sharks
include fishing and bycatch; indirect
threats include climate change, and
habitat loss and pollution due to an
increase in coastal development.
A number of characteristics of
sharks makes them particularly
vulnerable to exploitation. Typically
shark species have a long life span,
mature late and have a slow rate of
reproduction. If the population becomes depleted it would also take
a long time to recover and reach a
healthy level.
Around 70 million sharks are
caught each year in fishing nets and
as bycatch (the unintentional catch
of a non-target species). The main
concern with overfishing is the catch
of small or young individuals. These
have not yet reached maturity or had
the opportunity to reproduce, thereby impacting the future population.
Sharks are caught for their meat,
cartilaginous skeleton and their fins.
The main uses include consumption
and medicinal purposes. Fortunately
the finning industry which sees the
capture of a shark, removal of their
fins and discard of the rest, is in de-
cline as the demand for shark fin
produce reduces and awareness
of this practice increases.
As coastlines develop and climate change takes affect the
marine environment is altered.
Mangroves and reefs used as
nursery ground for shark pups
(juvenile sharks) and feeding
grounds are negatively impact-
ed, leaving little habitat for the
sharks.
Sharks are apex predators in the
ocean, they are at the top of the
food chain. If an apex predator
is removed or the population reduced, life becomes unbalanced.
Consequences include the alteration of habitats, individual species
populations and food chains.

Synopsis
Born on June 5, 1971, in Dorchester, Mass., Mark Wahlberg grew up
the youngest of nine children. After
a 45-day jail term at 16, Wahlberg
turned his life around via the music
world with the help of his brother
Donnie, a member of New Kids on
the Block. Wahlberg transformed
from rapper to Hollywood actor
and never looked back, starring in
films such as Boogie Nights and
Three Kings. His recent projects include Lone Survivor (2013), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
and Ted 2 (2015).
On the Streets of Boston
Actor and former rapper Mark
Wahlberg was born on June 5,
1971, in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Wahlberg grew up the youngest of
nine children in a working class
Irish Catholic family in the Boston
district of Dorchester. Wahlberg’s
parents divorced when he was 11;
his mother has since blamed her
own emotional neglect for her
youngest son’s descent into juvenile
delinquency during the next several
years.
At 14, Wahlberg dropped out of
school and began making his living
on the streets—hustling, stealing,
and selling drugs. Two years later,
he hit rock bottom when he was
jailed for his role in the savage beating of a Vietnamese man. Although
the crime was believed by many to
be racially motivated, Wahlberg has
continually denied that race played
a part in the attack. His 45-day stint
in prison was a self-proclaimed
turning point in the 16-year-old
Wahlberg’s life. Vowing to give himself some direction in his life, he
also began body building seriously,
chiseling his body into impressive
form.
Pop Star Fame
By the time Wahlberg had
emerged from prison, his older
brother Donnie had rocketed to
stardom as one of five fresh-faced
members of the pop band New
Kids on the Block. Donnie decided
to help his younger brother find his
own niche in the music business.
What Wahlberg lacked in singing
ability, he made up for in charisma
and good looks—with Donnie’s hiphop arrangements and producing
help, Marky Mark (his rap name)
and his back-up deejay and dancers (dubbed “the Funky Bunch”)
recorded a debut album, Music
for the People (1991). Driven by
the success of the hit dance singles
“Good Vibrations” and “Wildside”
(and by Marky Mark’s readiness to

TODAY in History
Joni Mitchell did have an aneurysm in March but is able to
speak, a friend who acts as her
conservator has said.
Leslie Morris’s update on the
Canadian singer’s condition follows an interview with US musician David Crosby, in which
he said she was still unable to
speak.
“The truth is that Joni is
speaking, and she’s speaking
well,” said Morris on Mitchell’s
official website. “She is resting
comfortably in her own home
and she’s getting better each day.
A full recovery is expected.”
July 1st is the 182nd day of the year
1979: First Sony
Walkman goes on sale
1903: Tour de
France
On this day in 1979, the Sony
Walkman – the first personal
stereo cassette player ever –
went on sale. It would change
the world of on-the-go music
forever.
It was brought to the market
thanks to Sony’s legendary chairman, Masaru Ibuka, who was an
avid music lover. Ibuka traveled
frequently and was in the habit
of carrying one of the company’s
“portable” recorders, the Sony
TC-D5, but it was a heavy and
bulky device. So he asked his
engineers to work on something
much smaller.
After a breakneck development speed of 4 months, they
created the Walkman. The first
design had large, earmuff-like
headphones and custom-made
batteries (which, of course, ran
out on Ibuka midway through
his flight). However, it impressed
everyone who gave it a listen. It
went on sale for ¥30,000 in Japan and soon took off, becoming
one of Sony’s greatest success stories.
On this day in 1903, the first
Tour de France cycling race took
place. It ran for 19 days in six
stages over approximately 2414
kilometres and was won by Maurice Garin.
The race was invented to boost
the circulation of newspaper
L’Auto, after its circulation started
to plummet from competition
with the long-standing Le Vélo. To
keep their circulation of 20,000
fans content, they decided to hold
a race.
With an entry fee of 10 francs, it
attracted over 79 cyclists, of whom
60 actually started the race. The
1903 Tour de France was run in 6
stages, which were extraordinarily
long compared to modern stages,
with an average distance of over
400km.
Garin won the competition by a
margin of 2 hours 59 minutes and
31 seconds – the greatest margin of
victory in the Tour de France to this
day.
Yes bass guitarist Chris
Squire dies aged 67
Chris Squire, the bass guitarist
and co-founder of 1970s British
progressive rock band Yes, has
died at the age of 67, his bandmates have said.
Current Yes keyboardist Geoffrey Downes tweeted: “Utterly
devastated beyond words to
have to report the sad news of
the passing of my dear friend,
bandmate and inspiration Chris
Squire.”
Squire revealed in May he was
suffering from a rare form of
leukaemia.
The band said he died “peacefully” in Phoenix, Arizona, on
Saturday night. “It’s with the
heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our
dear friend and Yes co-founder,
Chris Squire,” said a statement
on the band’s official website.
tential comedy titled I Love Huckabee’s. In 2006, Wahlberg picked
up his first Academy Award nomination for his work on the crime
drama The Departed. The Martin Scorsese film also starred Jack
Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio
and Matt Damon.
Branching out in science fiction,
Wahlberg starred in M. Night
Shyamalan’s 2008 thriller The
Happening. The movie proved to
be a disappointment both critically
and commercially. Two years later,
however, Wahlberg earned raves
for his starring role in the gritty

onstage and in his videos), the album went platinum, selling over a
million copies.
One of pop music’s hottest new
commodities, Wahlberg (and his
rock-hard physique) became even
more ubiquitous when he signed
a two-year contract with the designer Calvin Klein to model underwear. His raucous public persona, he once became involved in
a much-talked-about brawl with
Madonna and her entourage at a
Los Angeles nightclub only served
to increase his popular appeal, until news began surfacing about his
criminal past and his possibly racist and homophobic tendencies.
In 1993, this part of Wahlberg’s
personal life was seriously questioned when he was accused of
condoning blatantly homophobic
remarks made on a British talk
show by his fellow guest, the reggae singer Shabba Ranks. Combined with the disappointing sales
of the Funky Bunch’s second album, You Gotta Believe (1992),
the public criticism of Wahlberg’s
career seemed to be steering his
career towards certain death. The
22-year-old’s survival instincts
kicked in, however, and he soon
made a move into another realm of
the entertainment world—acting.
Acting Career
After appearing in a 1993 television movie, The Substitute, Wahlberg made his big screen debut in
Penny Marshall’s lightweight Renaissance Man (1994), in which
he played one of a group of Army
recruits taught by an ex-advertising salesman, played by Danny
DeVito. His innate brand of screen
presence led to his casting in his
breakthrough role, that of the
drug-addled best friend of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in The
Basketball Diaries (1995), a smallscale but acclaimed film based on
poet-musician Jim Carroll’s dark
autobiography of his own adolescent struggles with heroin addiction.
After two more attention-getting
performances in Fear (1996) and
Traveller (1997), Wahlberg cemented his artistic and commercial reputation (and left “Marky
Mark” far behind) with a starring
role as dishwasher turned porn star
Eddie Adams (aka Dirk Diggler) in
writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s buzzworthy Boogie Nights
(1997), costarring Burt Reynolds.
Though his next two films—The
Big Hit (1998) and The Corruptor
(1999), costarring Chinese action
superstar Chow Yun-Fat—were
less than successful, Wahlberg
returned with a bang in the acclaimed Three Kings (1999). The
film costarred Wahlberg, George
Clooney, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze
as renegade U.S. servicemen in the
Persian Gulf during the aftermath
of the 1991 Gulf War conflict.
In 2000, Wahlberg reteamed
with Clooney (and Diane Lane) in
The Perfect Storm, Wolfgang Pe-
tersen’s highly-touted film version
of Sebastian Junger’s bestselling
account of a boat full of swordfishermen caught in a killer storm
in the North Atlantic. In late 2000,
Wahlberg costarred with Joaquin
Phoenix and James Caan in the
little-seen crime drama The Yards.
The following year, he starred as a
heavy metal rock musician in Rock
Star, costarring Jennifer Aniston,
and in the title role in a remake
of the classic Planet of the Apes,
costarring Charlton Heston and
Helena Bonham Carter.
In 2003, Wahlberg costarred
with Charlize Theron in the heist
thriller The Italian Job. He joined

Recent Years
Wahlberg has continued to thrive
as an actor. In 2012, he starred in
the hit Seth MacFarlane comedy
Ted. Wahlberg then returned to
challenging dramatic fare with
the real-life military drama Lone
Survivor (2013). Still a popular
choice for action films, Wahlberg starred in the latest installment of Transformers series,
Transformers: Age of Extinction
(2014). He rejoined Seth MacFarlane for the sequel Ted 2 in
2015.
Working behind the scenes,
Wahlberg has also enjoyed success as a producer. He has served
as an executive producer on such
television shows as Entourage,
In Treatment and Boardwalk
Empire. In 2014, Wahlberg
launched another small screen
project. He began appearing
as himself, along with brothers
Donnie and Paul, on Wahlburgers.
Wahlburgers, which airs on
A+E, focuses on (and takes its
name from) the Wahlberg family’s hamburger restaurant in
Hingham, Massachusetts—near
Boston—as well as the brothers’
quirks and interactions. Paul,
head chef of the eatery, is the star
of the show. The series received
a warm reception from the start.
Its third season debuts during
the summer of 2015.
Personal Life
Wahlberg married Rhea Durham in 2009. The couple had
three children, daughter Ella
and sons Michael and Brendan,
before tying the knot. In 2010,
they welcomed their second
daughter, Grace Margaret.

NOTICE OF COMPLETION OF
DISSOLUTION
International Business Companies
Act1994
Section 92(8)
21 Jan – 19 Feb
Someone will rub you up the
wrong way and you could
lose your temper in a big
way. Be careful you don’t take
your anger out on someone
who may one day be in a
position of power over you –
there WILL be payback.
23 July – 22 Aug
The change that is about to
take place in your life may
result in a lot of uncertainty
but the planets indicate
that when the dust has
settled you will realize that,
in the long-term, this is a
change which will do you
nothing but good.
20 Feb – 20 March
Some problems can be
resolved by hammering
them into submission, but
the problem you face now
requires a more subtle approach. If you are not sure
what the word means get
a dictionary and look it up!
Use brains, not brawn.
23 Aug – 23 Sept
It is important that you approach people in the right
way today. If you come on
too strong you may turn
colleagues against you. If
you are planning some
kind of change to your
working regime you must
consult other people.
21 March – 20 April
There is something you
started but failed to finish. You
may think you can just forget
about it but it won’t be that
easy. What happens today will
remind you in rather brutal
fashion that everything in life
must ultimately be paid for.
24 Sept – 23 Oct
You may feel that you can
take on the world and win
and to a certain extent
it’s true but there are still
some people it would be
wise to avoid. Someone
in a position of authority
is looking for an excuse to
cut you down in size.
21 April – 21 May
Although you are generally
quite placid there are times
when you go right the other
way and give vent to your
feelings and this is likely to
be one of them. Those negative emotions that have
been building up must be
dealt with.
24 Oct – 22 Nov
Mars, planet of action, endows you with a taste for
adventure but you would be
wise to take care when travelling or engaging in potentially dangerous activities
over the next few days. Discussing politics and religion
is best avoided too!
22 May – 21 June
You will be quite vocal in
your condemnation of
someone’s activities over the
next 24 hours, but before
you go accusing them of immoral behaviour remember
there are a few skeletons in
your own closet you might
like to keep hidden!
23 Nov – 21 Dec
If you have to say something unpleasant today
don’t try to wrap it up in
sugar coating. Others are
used to you being blunt, so
speak up and let everyone
know why you are unhappy – and what they can do
to make you smile again.
2. What’s the second most populous continent?
22 June – 22 July
22 Dec – 20 Jan
You won’t stand for any
kind of nonsense today,
either in your personal life
or at work. You certainly
won’t let others, be they
friends or rivals, piggyback on your success. You
worked hard to get what
you’ve got – so keep it.
