Here's some background information Hugo Duarte, FYI: “Trying to define Hugo Duarte’s music is a bit like trying to define good Cuban food to someone who’s never experienced its satisfying, mouth-watering sensations. Throw in a creamy, caramel colored flan for dessert; top it all off with shot of kick-in-the pants, revive-the-dead Café Cubano, and there you have it. Like good Cuban food, Hugo’s music is a combination of a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and a whole lot of down-to-earth ingredients that come together in an adventure of the senses. You can’t really describe it; you just have to try it in order to understand and appreciate the flavors and subtleties of whatever it is that you've just been presented.” Such are the elements of this remarkably talented singer/songwriter/storyteller. Duarte blends of a bit of Country, a pinch of Bluegrass, a handful of Southern rock, a cup or two of Blues, a dash of Island music, occasionally sprinkled with some American history, or tales of the sea, to form an eclectic style that doesn’t fit into the traditional definitions of the Rock and Roll world, the Tropic/Island sound, Blues, Country or any other particular genre. 2 of 8 Jimmy Buffett News Items Rolling Stone recently interviewed Jimmy. They noted that he started this summer's Bama Breeze Tour, the twenty-ninth since he, now 60, released mainstays "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise." "His shows typically have all the suspense of a North Korean election, and that's the way the Parrotheads like it. Year after year, they turn out to hear the "Big Eight" -- the major hits Buffett plays at every show -- and make like sharks during "Fins."" "Do you ever get sick of the hits? You have to give people what they want. I'm not out there to make statements. I'm descended from court jesters, not theologians, and I just go out there to entertain. Joseph Campbell said, "If you have a really great old car, and it keeps running, you may want to change the paint and seat covers, but you don't want to sell the car." Anything new this year? We went to [Caribbean island] Anguilla and did a show in March, and I said, "Let's find ten songs of mine we haven't done in twenty years." We shot a video of that show that's going to be out in December. There are songs out of that batch, like "Domino College," that are working really well in the show. Any chance the new material could displace any of the "Big Eight"? On the last tour, we didn't play "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw," which is one of the eight. It was an accident, because I plugged some stuff in, and when I finished the show, I went, "Oh, my God, we didn't do 'Get Drunk and Screw,' " which you figure in Texas is a must. Well, nobody yelled or threw anything, so we didn't do it the whole tour. The Margaritaville.com web page has been updated. Check it out. .Jimmy played a gig in Paris on June 8 at a club called New Morning. The setlist is below. There is still a contest going on through June 20, 2007 to win a set of tickets to see Jimmy Buffett, George Strait or Alan Jackson. More details and the entry form are located at: http://www.LiveAtTexasStadium.com/sweepstakes Jimmy played a benefit at the Rose Theater in New York NY on Monday May 14th, 2007 for the Jazz at Lincoln Center's 6th Annual Spring Gala. The show included performances by the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Lenny Kravitz and Derek Trucks. Jimmy played two songs (with Mac McAnally, Ralph MacDonald and Robert Greenidge) : Fool's Paradise (a Mose Allison song) and Creola (America needs New Orleans it has to be there. So this is for Ed) . Jimmy Buffett performed at a benefit for the Wounded Warrior project at the Armory in NYC on Wednesday May 30th. He sang five songs. "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (solo) and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" (solo). "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" and "Margaritaville" with the Nancy Atlas band and he did "Volcano" for an encore. They released some images of what Margaritaville may look like when it opens in Biloxi three years Born of Cuban, Chinese, and Scots-Irish ancestry, Duarte’s music is as diverse as his origins. His early childhood years were spent in Tigerville, South Carolina, an extremely small community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was there he came to understand the basics of life in that close-knit, rural community where life was simple, where everyone’s parents parented everyone else’s kids, and music and song were an integral part of everyday life. Somewhere along the line, Hugo’s family moved to North Carolina where Duarte’s musical influences drifted away from the native Bluegrass and traditional country music that had been so much a part of his life and began to take a new direction. He began to focus on the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band, Poco, the Eagles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Pure Prairie League, the Outlaws, Loggins and Messina, and many others. And that focus didn’t stop there. It also included Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Led Zeppelin, Glen Miller, John Phillip Sousa, Aaron Copeland, and other equally divergent styles. A defining moment in Duarte’s young life occurred when his long-time friend, Darrell Stafford, loaned him a guitar, an old Stella that had once belonged to Stafford’s grandmother. At a formative time in a boy’s life, when dreams take root, when idealism is at its strongest, when words and melodies trigger the search for self, the loan of that old Stella marked a pivotal point on the compass in Hugo’s young heart and mind. Visualize a 14-year-old boy, with that loaned Stella, sitting by the radio or dropping LPs onto a turntable and teaching himself to play along. This is the point where Hugo began developing his own brand of music, a style he dubbed “country music” because it wasn’t that big a departure from what he’d grown up with. It was also during this time period that Hugo wrote his first song called “Dance For Me”, a song about a ballerina. As Duarte continued to develop his music skills using various music styles as his guide, whether it was Soul, Country, Beach music, Rock 'n Roll, Classical, a unique blend emerged and began to meld together into his brand of “All Music”. Hence the origins of Hugo’s eclectic style… a style that really began to surface while at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Growing increasingly serious about his music, Duarte left college and began playing clubs in Charlotte, North Carolina and then on the road in places like the ‘Tween Waters Inn in Captiva, Florida and Crow's Nest in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It wasn’t long before he realized he could make a living doing what he loved the best. A few years later as he drifted down that musical highway playing gigs with his ever-expanding group, The Full Sail Band, he found himself as far south in the US as one can go. Searching for a connection to his Cuban heritage, he arrived in the Florida Keys and fell immediately in love with the area. Greg "Fingers" Taylor To music lovers worldwide, the names Jimmy Buffett and "Fingers" Taylor go hand in hand. Jimmy and Fingers met in 1970 when Taylor, a student at The University of Southern Mississippi, first jammed with him. At that time Buffett was performing as a solo artist. Fingers joined Larry Raspberry and The Highsteppers in 1971 but continued to work 3 of 8 from now. Margaritaville will include a hotel, casino, shops and restaurants. The $700 million project will be built along the water, directly across the street from Grand Casino Biloxi. The pictures are below. Recent Concert Setlists Here are the setlists for the recent Bama Breeze Tour shows, FYI, according to BuffettNews.com: Bama Breeze Tour New Morning - Paris Friday June 8th, 2007 Special Show 1 Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes 2 Piece Of Work 3 I Will Play For Gumbo 4 It's Five O'Clock Somewhere 5 Pencil Thin Mustache 6 Son Of A Son Of A Sailor 7 Son Of A Son Of A Sailor (Voulez-Vous Danser) 8 Elvis Presley Blues 9 Woman Goin' Crazy On Caroline Street 10 Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants 11 Volcano 12 Come Monday 13 Coast Of Marseilles 14 Autour Du Rocher 15 A Pirate Looks At Forty 16 One Particular Harbour 17 Cheeseburger In Paradise 18 Brown Eyed Girl 19 Margaritaville First Encore: 20 Fins 21 Southern Cross with Jimmy during the recording of Buffett's first three albums. In 1974, Jimmy called him and said he was ready to form the first actual "Coral Reefer Band" road unit. He still performs occasionally with Buffett . Greg "Fingers" Taylor, is considered by many musicians to be one of the best harp players around. "I wanted an instrument I could scream on, and I loved the blues harmonica players like Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson," said Taylor. Among his early influences were Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, but he especially loved to emulate the sounds of Little Walter Jacobs. Why Fingers? "I'm afraid that I'm responsible for the nickname," Taylor says. "I had a band called the Buttermilk Blues in high school...and I decided to give everybody in the band a bluesy nickname. Being the keyboard player, I picked 'Fingers.' It wasn't until I switched to the harp that I realized I had the wrong name. But by then it was too late." The Buffett mystery Are Jimmy and Warren related? And how did Google co-founder Sergey Brin's wife get involved? Fortune's Matthew Boyle reports on the resolution of a mystery. FORTUNE Magazine By Matthew Boyle, Fortune writer May 28 2007: 7:47 AM EDT (Fortune Magazine) -- Did you hear the one about Warren Buffett, Jimmy Buffett, Google billionaire Sergey Brin, and his wife's startup firm? Stay with us, because this story gets complicated. Second Encore: 22 He Went To Paris (Jimmy acoustic) 16th Annual Meeting of the Minds 2007 Update ! "#$% Bill De Walt, Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. Director of Conventions MOTM 2007 sent this out on June 2, 2007: "Fins Up, Parrot Heads!!! We have well over 2100 of our closest Parrot Head Phriends who have already registered and will be in Key West to "Party with a Purpose" at Meeting of the Minds 2007, "Barefootin' Key West.". Over the next few weeks, I'll be sending out some background information on the bands performing at our host hotel, the Casa Marina Resort and Beach Club. We have several new entertainers this year along with some of your favorites from years past. Here are two bands that are part of the entertainment line up: In a May 22 SEC filing, Google disclosed that it had invested $3.9 million in a heretofore unknown biotech startup that just so happens to be run by the new wife of Google co-founder Brin. Okay, maybe you knew that. But did you know that the firm, 23andMe, which decodes DNA to help people understand their ancestry (the name comes from our 23 paired chromosomes), recently submitted a report that definitively answered a question Fortune posed eight years ago this month - to wit, Are Jimmy and Warren Buffett related? Before we reveal the answer, here's some badly needed background: Fortune's 1999 piece, while noting that both Jimmy and Warren play stringed instruments, stick to their guns, and are filthy rich, could not prove any definitive link, save for some possible common ancestors who lived in a former penal colony in the South Pacific. But the question continued to linger, especially since the Oracle of Omaha and the Minstrel of Margaritaville have long been fans of each other. Jimmy even made a surprise appearance on stage at the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting on May 5, singing "Wasted Away Again in Berkshire Hathaway-ville," to the delight and amazement of those present. Earlier this year two letters came over Buffett's (the Oracle's) transom asking him to submit to a DNA analysis. One was from Anne Wojcicki, 23andMe's co-founder. She didn't mention that they had previously met at Herb Allen's annual Sun Valley, Idaho, retreat - she was with Brin - and even after Google's (Charts, Fortune 500) recently announced investment in 23andMe, Buffett had no idea it was Brin's intended he had been dealing with. (Wojcicki's romance with Brin, by the way, was reportedly sparked after her sister rented out her garage to him and his partner, Larry Page, as office space for a little search engine company they were hatching.) The Caribbean Chillers: 4 of 8 http://www.caribbeanchillers.com Taken from their web site: "They are one of the most AUTHENTIC, and TRUE TO FORM Jimmy Buffett Tribute Shows touring today. They are --- The Caribbean Chillers!! They have an 'authentic look', realistic sound' to their music, lots of interaction with the audience, the Caribbean Chillers get it right, and we are sure that you will love it!" Jason, the lead vocalist, has Jimmy's mannerisms, vocal style, and connection with the audience down pretty good. They have masterfully put together an authentic "Tribute Show" that includes just about everything you'll see and hear at a real Buffett Concert. This band knows how to PARTY, not only with a purpose, but designed to be authentic on purpose! To find out more, go to http://www.caribbeanchillers.com/home.htm. Stars on the Water: http://www.starsonthewater.com/ Taken from their web site: Stars on the Water is a nationally recognized San Diego based band that specializes in a Tropical Rock and Roll sound and cover tunes of Jimmy Buffett. This power duo is comprised of San Diego natives Jerry Gontang and Mike Broward. Their calendar for 2007 has them traveling the United States from coast to coast and border to border helping Parrot Head clubs raise money for favorite local and national charities. (See http://www.starsonthewater.com/) If you have participated at the Gift Bag Stuffing at Meeting of the Minds, then you have seen them in action! On top of what they do when they are performing, Jerry has never been the kind of guy to stand around when everyone else is working. He jumps right in with the rest of us to do what ever is needed to make MOTM a success, from assisting in unloading the 18 - 22 boxes of T-Shirts when they arrive in the delivery truck to helping set up the Gift Bag Stuffing items the day before the actual stuffing. So come on out and "Party with a Purpose" with all of your Parrot Head PHriends!! Go to http://www.phip.com/MOTM and register online or via snail mail. If you have any questions regarding MOTM or registration - please don't hesitate to ask your club leaders, your phriends, or email our Registration Chair at motm.reg.chair@phip.com or weluvkw@yahoo.com. Looking forward to seeing you ALL partying and "Barefootin' Key West" at the Casa Marina in November!! Don't be left outside looking in. Register TODAY!!! Bill De Walt PHiP Inc. Director of Conventions http://www.phip.com/MOTM.asp Some other things to remember about MOTM: 1. Registrations are not transferable. 2. We cannot "hold" your registration place; payment in full must be included with your registration. 3. You must be registered to attend all the events scheduled at MOTM. 4. Registration is $75.00 per person, not per couple. Children under 12 are free unless they want a gift bag and then they have to be registered. Brin and Wojcicki (pronounced wo-JES-ki) were married in early May, on the same weekend as the Berkshire (Charts, Fortune 500) shareholder meeting. (See, we told you this was complicated.) About two months ago Warren and Jimmy submitted DNA to 23andMe. (Warren "just kept spitting into a little receptacle, and then we FedExed it. Not very elegant," says his assistant. Jimmy did the same.) When the results came back a month later, Wojcicki - a 33-year-old Yale grad and former health-care industry analyst - and her associate Joanna Mountain called Warren from 23andMe's offices, just half a mile from Google's Mountain View, Calif., campus, and broke the news that he need not include Jimmy in his will. In fact, "I'm as closely related to you as Jimmy is," said Mountain, the head of 23andMe's ancestry product line and a former professor of anthropological genetics at Stanford. (By the way, if you'd like to join Wojcicki's team, they're hiring like mad.) As it turns out, Jimmy and Warren do have common ancestors, but you have to go back more than 10,000 years to find them. That's before surnames, folks. "Bottom line: We're not related," Warren wrote to his sister Doris, the family genealogist, who opened this whole can of worms many years ago. Warren Buffett's ten-page DNA report, which he shared with Fortune, also revealed that his paternal ancestors hail from northern Scandinavia, while his mother's side most likely has roots in Iberia or Estonia. Sadly, the report gave no inkling of the whereabouts of that lost shaker of salt. Here's an article about Helen Bransford, the illustrator of Jimmy's new book "Swine Not": Helen Bransford Brings Home the Bacon Her next book is a collaboration with Jimmy Buffett about a cosmopolitan swine (of the four-legged kind) By Russell Drumm (05/23/2007) Helen Bransford is small, fine-featured, and pretty, a most unlikely swineherd. And she wouldn’t touch a pork chop with a 10-foot pole. She has a thing for pigs, however. “Root around in there and find the tea you want,” she told a visitor on Friday, her words soft and shaped by Nashville, where she was raised. “I’m a vegan now. That’s a creepy term. I like ‘plant-based diet’ better.” Forky, a 12-year-old Vietnamese potbellied pig, slumbered on the living room couch wearing a shawl. Pinky, a youngster — “the manly pig” — clippity-clopped across the kitchen floor wearing a red harness and complaining about something in a high-pitched squeal. Ms. Bransford said that when people hear him in the background they often mistake him for a parrot. (But more about parrots later.) “I once had an English bull terrier. People said, Is that a pig? I guess I’ve been moving toward pigs for a long time.” A very long time. Seems that down on the family farm her two older brothers called her “Moonbeam” or “Mac,” after Moonbeam McSwine, the character from Al Capp’s “L’il Abner” cartoon who preferred the company of pigs to men. It wasn’t until early 1995 that the porcine preference took the form of a pet pig. Ms. Bransford was living at the time in the heart of Manhattan, where barnyard animals are strictly verbotten. Guile and the winking cooperation of a friendly doorman made it possible. The apartment complex in which she lived with five cats, her twins, Jay McInerney (her former husband, the author of 5 of 8 5. Everyone must be registered. This means a registered person may NOT bring a date, spouse or significant other and expect that person to be permitted to attend MOTM events as your guest. Forky “Bright Lights, Big City”), and Forky backed onto the Carlisle Hotel. The trip to the city in an R.V. with family and menagerie “is a book in itself,” Ms. Bransford said. Please do your fellow club members a favor and talk to them, tell them it is time to register before it is too late. We have been cautioning you all and this is just one more note reminding you that we will be stopping registration at 3500... As an infant, Forky went in and out of the building in a purse. Her droppings were deposited in a park down the street so they couldn’t be traced. A screenwriter friend who lived on the top floor met Forky at the freight elevator to let Forky stretch her legs, loins, and fat back. Even her name was a ruse. It was chosen to prevent the twins from mistakenly blowing the pig’s cover in the elevator by saying something like “ ‘Porky ate my socks.’ If they knew they would have confiscated her.” Pork-Qua was another name under consideration. Eva DeWalt, Registration Chair Meeting of the Minds 2007 ”Barefootin' Key West" For more information or to sign up, go to: http://www.phip.com/MOTM.asp Migration 2007 “The Cannons still Thunder” Regional Phlocking in Vegas - July 27-29, 2007 All the swine-related subterfuge inevitably led to “Swine Not,” a book illustrated by Ms. Bransford and written in collaboration with her friend Jimmy Buffett, the original Parrot Head. Now that the imaginative author and her cloven-hoofed friends dwell in pig-friendly East Hampton, it’s safe for Little, Brown to publish it come fall. Ms. Bransford lived in London for a time. In her youth she worked as the head waitress at the city’s Hard Rock Cafe, when it first opened. It was in London that she began designing jewelry, apprenticing there before making a go of it later on 48th Street in New York City. She has continued making jewelry, some of which begin as Christmas tree decorations. And she has written before, unabashedly. “Welcome to Your Face Lift” (Doubleday) came about through personal experience as a guide for people who were considering plastic surgery. “At the time it was a forbidden subject. You couldn’t say, ‘Hey, tell me what it’s like to have a face lift.’ It was before Botox. I kept a journal. I was having dinner with Liz Smith and she said, ‘That’s a book.’ ” The book sold well. “Swine Not” follows the adventures of Rumpy the pig and friends, including the pigeolantes (pigeon vigilantes) who “watch the airspace in the city, to prevent animals from falling out windows.” Like Forky, Rumpy is forced to live undercover in an apartment, only venturing outside when well disguised as a dog or when wearing her favorite pink wig. Migration 2007 Regional Phlocking “The Cannons still Thunder” will be going on July 27-29, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Hooters Casino Hotel with several musical guests, including: Stars on the Water, Hugo Duarte, and Tommy Rocker & Conched Out. For more information, go to: http://www.migrationsocal.com. Tommy Rocker Update “I was staying at Jane and Jimmy’s,” she said, referring to Mr. Buffett and his wife. “Jimmy said, ‘Let me read it, and took it on his sailboat overnight.’ The next day he told me he wanted to edit it and add layers. He got into it. Took it to a fantastic level. He likes animals.” She said it was originally meant to be a children’s book, and probably still was, although it was one that should appeal to easily amused adults. During Friday’s visit, Pinky continued to squeal. It was raining outside, which was where he wanted to be, his owner said. Forky, on the other hand, seemed content on the couch. She grunted middream only occasionally, the white shawl covering her shoulders in a grandmotherly way. Alas, she was fixed and has no piglets. “They’re as smart as dolphins, and adore people,” Ms. Bransford said. “And they can smell things six feet underground.” She predicted that the olfactory sense that’s put pigs to work finding truffles might some day help diagnose disease in humans by way of their breath even better than dogs, whose trained noses were able to detect cancer, she said. At the same time, they are not everyone’s idea of a pet, Ms. Bransford allowed. These lines from the book were the fruit of firsthand experience with Forky: Speaking of fellow Oregonian Tommy Rocker, his landmark Mojave Beach establishment in Las Vegas is about to go through a rather significant makeover. On June 6, the Las Vegas Parrot Head Club will have their last phlocking there and on June 16th Tommy and "Conched Out" will play their last gig there. Then, on June 20 it will reopen as "Tommy Rocker's Gentlemen's Club" complete with "bare naked ladies"! The Las Vegas club has indicated that they will now call the Hooter Casino Hotel home. We wish them all the best! A home that’s occupied by pigs Is nothing like the normal digs Its system must incorporate A crazed-with-hunger vertebrate A thing routinely left intact Might well become a piggy snack. Forky, just for instance, loves alcohol. “If she finds a can of beer, she can crush it with her jaws and then lick it up. There are concessions you’ve got to make.” A special hole in a closet door was made for kitchen scraps, normal garbage cans being easy prey for Pinky and Forky. “I hate to say it, but they’d eat a crispy piece of bacon if you gave it to them.” “They’re large and unwieldy, more of a commitment than a dog or a cat. They don’t like their heads petted, would rather get their stomachs rubbed,” she continued. “And as they get older they’re not like a trophy wife. When they’re abandoned, it breaks their heart.” 6 of 8 June Recipes Ms. Bransford said she hoped “Swine Not” would be a success for two reasons: to give Forky her due as she nears the end of her life, and “just to keep pigs out there.
