The Island Times is a publication of the Parrot Heads of North Carolina Parrothead Club (PH of NC) a chartered
chapter of Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHiP), the officially sanctioned organization blessed by the man himself;
Jimmy Buffett.
PH of NC is not affiliated with Jimmy Buffett, Margaritaville, Mailboat Records or any of JB’s endeavors.
So There.
We’re Legal!
Once again the PH of NC has been approved to “Party With a Purpose” in 2014!
Message from the Prez…
Happy 2014, PH of NC! As we look back in our rear view mirror at 2013, we had a
tremendous and successful year. Over 90% of our club members attended or participated in
at least one club event. That’s fantastic. We even had almost half the club at last month’s
Christmas party, rocking to the sounds of Ronnie Tsunami and the Wave Riders. If you
missed it, you missed a great party. Hopefully in 2014, we can get the percentage closer to
100%. I realize everyone’s schedule is busy with family, work and all kinds of other
distractions, but if you need to escape every once in a while, come on and hang out and
party with your great Parrot Head “phriends and phamily”. Paul might even teach you one
or two of his dance moves.
Our club membership has remained stable at a little over 140 members. Hopefully we can
add a few new members to our group this year. Do you know someone who might be
interest in the club? Invite them to the next social on February 8 to check us out. Also, just a
quick reminder, if you haven’t renewed your membership for 2014, please do so a.s.a.p.
The membership form can be found on the clubs website: www.phofnc.com.
I’m very proud to say that PH of NC raised $28,649.14 for our charities, and we donated
1,718 service hours to our community last year. In the last two years (2012-2013,) PH of NC
has donated over $54,000 and almost 3,300 service hours for our community service.
Thank you! We have all worked hard and we’ve played hard. What we assuredly did, in a
big way, was to help make a difference in our community, a difference in our environment,
and a difference in the lives of our fellow man. PH of NC partied with a purpose in 2013.
Great job everyone.
I’d like to take a minute to say thank You to Cindy Morgan and Tim Knobeloch for all the
time an effort they gave to the club while serving on the board. Both can now enjoy some
free time, enjoy being a member or just hang gliding or bungee jumping– no additional
meetings, no extra running around – whatever they want! I’d also like to welcome our two
new board members: David Bathurst, Director of Events and Activities, and David Bartlett,
Director of Membership and Merchandise. If you’d like to get more involved with the club,
both David’s are looking for volunteers.
This year we have many events and activities planned. Be sure to check the website and the
weekly email updates for all the details. This year’s concerts are starting to be announced
as of this week. Keep your fingers crossed.
One more important item: March 15 is the final deadline for the PHiP scholarship contest.
Being on “Island Time” just won’t work in this situation. PHIP awards 3 scholarships in the
amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000. To apply, go to our website or the PHiP site for the
application. Good luck.
Thanks again for a great 2013, and I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2014. Fins up!

Letter From The Island Times Editor
I want to be honest with everyone.
I used to sit after a meeting and say to myself, “OK I spent money on the 50/50,
donated toys, food or pet supplies… did it really make a difference to anyone?”
It’s difficult to realize what an impact you make on an individual when the club
donates so much time, money and effort to quite a few agencies that use it in
very different ways.
Yes the donations to the Food Bank, Toys for Tots and Second Chance
Adoption are very obvious as they sit on the tables at our meetings. But what
about the raffles and 50/50’s?
First off let me say that all our financial endeavors are recorded and available in
detail through Paul Eberle. So if you want to know to the penny what was sent
to what charity and when, just drop him an email (it’s always on the first page of
the Island Times). Besides it’s lonely on the road.
Now that that disclaimer is out of the way, let me say that our club does a lot.
Really, a lot. We are doing something almost every month that benefits a charity
and that’s a big deal that every member should be proud of contributing to.
Now we get appreciation letters for the things we do and it’s great to get
acknowledged but in all the years of being involved with Parrot Head Clubs, I
have never seen what we do so personified and hitting so close to home.
Let me says “thanks” to all of you for your blood, sweat, cash and work that
makes me proud to be a Parrothead!
Now I would like to direct your attention to the following letter from Mike
Dorman at Military Missions in Action, in appreciation of our actions the last half
of 2013 along with the letter he mentions:
Membership Dues Due!
Yes it’s the annual tradition of sending in your dues, if you haven’t
done so already. No increase in the amount you pay, just in the
amount of fun you’ll have. Plus all the forms you need are on the next
page! More info is at the website PHofNC.com
Jimmy Buffett Performs At The Recent “Kokua
for the Philippines” Benefit Concert
A recent article in the Star Advertiser “Philippines benefit concert raises $1.76M despite weather”
A thunder storm dampened television coverage and attendance at the outdoor Kokua for the Philippines benefit
concert, but a shortened show went on and still raised nearly $1.76 million for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The live television broadcast of the concert was canceled because the outdoor venue on the Great Lawn of the
Hilton Hawaiian Village was rained out by a thunder storm.
Performers appearing on shortened event included: Henry Kapono, Mick Fleetwood, Kristian Lei, Amy
Hanaiali’i Gilliom, a special appearance by Jimmy Buffett with Jake Shimabukuro, Brother Noland, Aidan
James, Clifford Naeole, Kealoha, Kalei Gamiao, EMKE, AJ Rafael, and Marco Lopez.
Proceeds from phone bank and on-site gifts will be donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief.
Buffett/Estavan Raise Money for Miami Marine Stadium
Jimmy Buffett was at the Coral Gables Museum on January 9th to raise money for Miami
Marine Stadium, the site of his 1985 concert video Live By The Bay. Buffett and Gloria
Estefan did a Q&A, and then Buffett performed a few songs with Robert Greenidge.
From the Miami Herald:
“I have my shameless promoter hat on now,’’ Buffett says, laughing as he exercises his fertile imagination on
behalf of his latest cause: Helping to bring the iconic but weatherworn, graffiti-covered stadium on Virginia
Key back to life after a prolonged dormancy of more than 20 years.
Buffett’s in league with another Miami musical icon, singer Gloria Estefan, the official face of a campaign to
resuscitate the publicly owned stadium, which just turned 50 and is widely regarded as a cultural and
architectural treasure.
Concerts at the marine stadium marked signal moments in the early careers of both stars, and they’re
repaying the favor with a joint appearance Thursday at a sold-out fundraiser for the rescue effort at the Coral
Gables Museum. After a talk-show-style Q&A with Estefan and NBC6 anchor Jackie Nespral as host, Buffett
will do a few tunes with longtime steel-drum accompanist Robert Greenidge.
“The marine stadium was a pretty special place, and Miami’s always been great to me, so why not?’’ Buffett
said, speaking from his Palm Beach County home. “I’m in the fun business and things that make people
happy. The first time I played it, I fell in love with it. How could you not? You’re on a floating stage surrounded
by people in boats, and those incredible sunsets. It was such a unique place to play in.”
Jimmy’s most vivid memory from playing at Miami Marine Stadium?
The time he jumped from the barge that served as a stage into the scrum of swimmers, boaters and floaters in
the water at the end of one especially sweaty performance. He had played two shows, which had been
preceded by a 56-piece steel-drum band from Trinidad, the Desperadoes.
“I remember very vividly,” Buffett said. “It was the perfect opening act. It put people in a rather festive mood. It
was like being in a water carnival. There was space between the barge and the first seats in the grandstand.
There were people swimming in there. It was not out of control exactly, but it was rockin’.
“No one expected that diversified amount of floating objects from large yachts to inner tubes. The size of the
crowd in the water was amazing.
“It was also extremely hot. At one point, I told my stage manager, ‘When this thing’s over, take my guitar,
because I’m goin’ in.’”
