WHAT IS SPIRITUAL RENEWAL?
Father George Wilson
A number of parishioners accompanied me on September 14 to All Saints Mausoleum at Lake Lawn
Cemetery to offer prayers for former Cathedral Dean Father William (Vasilios) Gaines. Father Bill fell asleep
in the Lord on that major feast day of the Church, the patronal feast of Holy Cross Seminary. In his later
years, Father Bill was dedicated to the continuing religious education of young Orthodox Christians through
his nationally known college ministries. I recently came across a bulletin entry that I shared in 2004 and that
you might find helpful and edifying. May the memories of Father Bill and Presvytera Alyce be eternal!

Daily Prayer
Talking to God. Sharing with Him our disappointments, frustrations, hopes, and anxieties. Asking for His
help in being a better person—more patient, more understanding, more caring. And, above all, giving
thanks for the many good things that surround us —health, abundance, freedom, opportunity, and the
chance to be ourselves. Many people in today's world are denied these blessings, and so often we take
them for granted.
Enlightened Worship
Worship is coming together with others to glorify, to thank, to praise, and to ask God to remember us in His
infinite mercy. Worship fills a deep need within us to share our love of God with others and to express that
love in prayer, hymns, and sacred services in the beauty of God’s House, the Church. Our Divine Liturgy and
other services are not just chanting, hymns, incense, and icons. They are the framework for the word of
God, the Church Fathers, and the Saints, who speak to us over the centuries and instruct us, if we will but
take the time to nourish our souls.
Regular Sacraments
At each Divine Liturgy the Church fulfills the promise that Christ asked of us at the Last Supper when He
offered His disciplines the bread as “my body” and the wine as “my blood” and asked them to “do this in
remembrance of me.” In taking Holy Communion we unite ourselves with our Lord. The sacraments that we

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
2016
OCTOBER
October brings a change in the air as the cooler temperatures of fall arrive. It is also a time to reflect on the
accomplishments of the calendar year and the tasks ahead to achieve year end goals. The Cathedral windows were
treated with UV protective film, as voted by the community in 2015, to assure preservation of our iconography. At the Fall
Family Retreat on September 17, parishioners heard Father Athanasios Haros of Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek
Orthodox Church in Florence, South Carolina, give inspirational remarks on living a life closer to God and assuring that
Christ is a part of our daily lives. His weekly podcasts are available through I-tunes or on YouTube. The General
Assemblies on September 18 were well attended, and the proposals for the Cathedral Montessori School were
approved. Many committee reports were given, and a review of the year was presented on the progress and the
activities in the community. In appreciation of the many gifts received during our recovery from Hurricane Katrina, the
membership approved a donation of $10,000 to our sister parish Holy Trinity Church in Baton Rouge to help them
rebuild after their recent flooding. The community also donated $1,000 to His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew in
recognition of the 25th anniversary of his enthronement. Appreciation is extended to the Sunday Church School and
Greek School teachers, who dedicate much time and effort to assure exceptional lesson plans and classes for the
students. All youth of the community are encouraged to attend these classes regularly to gain important knowledge
about our faith and heritage. Appreciation is also extended to Father George for his dedicated efforts each day for our
community and parishioners. If you need any assistance, wish to schedule confession, or have any questions about our
faith, please contact Father George through the Cathedral office.

The Cathedral family thanks Nick Stathopoulos for
conducting the CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
course on August 13, 2016. He provided informative
instruction and engaging hands-on training to more
than twenty parishioners, who completed the training
and the required test to receive AHA certification. The
information and skills provided are extremely helpful in
the event of an emergency where a person is
unresponsive, has no pulse, or stops breathing.
Philoptochos Senior Luncheon Honors Mary Pepps’ 99th Birthday
The first 2016 fall Senior Citizens Luncheon took pace on September
22 at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Philoptochos greatly appreciates
the support of Father George Wilson and Presvytera Harriet, who
sponsored the luncheon in honor of Mary Pepps, as well as Connie and
Alex Tiliakos, who co-sponsored in memory of their parents, Katherine
and John Tiliakos and Helen and George Pappas. The organization also
thanks the cooks John Koniditsiotis, Patrick Latour, and Alex Tiliakos
and the Luncheon Chairperson Faith Kyame. Seniors enjoyed a
delicious meal of baked chicken, oven roasted potatoes, green beans,
and salad. The dessert was a birthday cake in honor of Mary Pepps’
99th birthday. Everyone had fun playing bingo after the meal.

ORGANIZATIONS
A short regular AHEPA meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18,
2016, at 7:30 pm in the Hellenic Cultural Center. All current and former
AHEPA members, as well as those interested in joining, are invited to
attend. Discussion will include upcoming activities, scholarships, and
charitable donations. Plans include dinner night out on Monday, October
24; Rock 'N' Bowl in November; and Christmas Party Sunday on December
18. AHEPA (the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) is
dedicated to promoting education, philanthropy, scholarships, Hellenism,
athletics, and individual excellence. Two important events are planned
this month—the meeting with refreshments on Tuesday, October 18, and welcoming AHEPA
Supreme President Andrew Zachariades of New Jersey on Monday evening October 24 as he visits
the local AHEPA chapter and the city of New Orleans. The chapter will host Supreme President Andy
at a local restaurant at 7:30 pm on Monday, October 24. Please mark these two important dates on
your calendar. Come to the meeting to get all details of the exciting events and activities planned for
AHEPA in the coming year and meet and socialize with other members.
The Daughters of
Penelope met on
Sunday, September
11, for the start of
the new year with
President
Denise
Ammons presiding.
Discussion topics
included plans for the upcoming Holiday
Pastry Sale workshops slated for
November 15 and 16, as well as the
joint Christmas Party with AHEPA on
Sunday, December 18. Also, considered
again this year was a $1,000 donation to
Holy Trinity Cathedral as a stewardship
commitment. The Daughters will have a
Christmas Tea on Saturday, December
10. All members are encouraged to
attend the next Daughters meeting on
Sunday, October 16, in the Hellenic
Cultural Center following church
services.
The “Back Yard Barbeque” themed Family Day held on
Sunday, September 25, 2016, gave HOPE & JOY and
GOYA members an opportunity to begin an icon craft using
plaster frames donated by Cathy Vial. The participants
sponged the frames with 14k gold paint. An image of Jesus
will be glued and sealed to them at the next Family Day.
Father George will be asked to place the icons in the altar
for a 40-days blessing before the students take them home.
Thank you to everyone, who partook in the event. The next
Family Day will be announced soon.
CHANTER UPDATE
Community members are informed that Emmanouil (Mano) Georgantakis is no longer the Cathedral chanter. He
departed from New Orleans on September 21. Father George and the Parish Council are working together to find his
replacement. Periodic updates on this process will be provided. In the meantime visiting chanters will occasionally
assist the Cathedral chanters with services. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this transition.
