Britain’s bike riders and scooterists welcome
safety initiatives and expect governments to introduce practical measures, according to research commissioned by
the Motor Cycle Industry Association. Three-quarters of
riders said that a government that has a more positive approach to motorcycling could contribute to motorcycle
safety on the roads.
In light, of the recent launch of the National Motorcycle
Strategy, where a number of proposals to help ‘mainstream’
motorcycling are promised, bikers can hope that the new
government will continue with these positive developments.
Access to bus lanes for bikers is positively welcomed by
87%, who reckon that existing schemes in areas such as
Bristol demonstrate that bus lanes can be used by bikes
and scooters without compromising safety for other road
users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
Riders recognise that Local Authorities have a role to
play in making roads safer. Improving the conditions of
roads is considered to be the most beneficial action they
can take with 85% of respondents agreeing. On the other
hand, only 1% of riders think adding more traffic calming
measures such as speed bumps would creating a safer
riding environment.
Local Authorities are currently developing their Local
Transport Plans (LTP), a process to be completed early in
2006. With a national strategy in place and an increasing
levels of guidance and advice available, local authorities
can have no excuse for ignoring motorcycles in their transport plans. Craig Carey-Clinch, MCI’s director of public
affairs said, “ Riders are not making unrealistic demands,
what they are asking for from government are sensible and
practical measures that will provide safer roads for motorcyclists and all road-users alike”.
“These measures are closely linked with National Motorcycle Strategy and the MCI’s manifesto which is calling on
Government to implement these goals in order to develop
a sustainable future for motorcycling in the UK.”

A major survey of travel behaviour in three English
cities has revealed the huge potential for reducing traffic
and tackling congestion through relatively small and simple changes to people’s daily travel patterns. The research,
conducted by Socialdata in collaboration with Sustrans, the
UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, showed that
walking, cycling or public transport provide a practical alternative for up to 56% of local car trips.
A total of over 12,000 people in Darlington, Peterborough
and Worcester were surveyed and the results provide a
snapshot of how people travel and, importantly, the changes
that are possible to improve the quality of life for everyone.
In a typical week residents of the three towns spend an
average of one hour every day travelling, getting a distance
of around 13 miles. The greatest proportion of trips are made
for leisure reasons, with shopping and work each accounting for around one in five trips and one in ten trips are for
school or educational reasons.
Around 25% of all trips are made on foot, 8% by public
transport and 3% by bike. Nearly 2/3 of trips are in a car
with 43% as a driver and 22% as a passenger. However
around 30% of car trips in each town were no longer than 2
miles, and the majority were within the town.
But, while the evidence suggests an ongoing reliance on
the car, Sustrans’ researchers discovered that nearly all
residents are unhappy with the increased traffic and support sustainable alternatives to car travel including public
transport, cycling and walking. Nine out of ten people considered sustainable transport to be a priority for transport
planners and their policies.
Interestingly the residents of the three cities also spend
more time walking and cycling than driving for their everyday journeys - 22 minutes per day compared with just 20
minutes spent driving.

Time doesn’t rush by on the Isle of Elba. This
is a place of history set off the western flank of mainland

emphasis for one man is to make it a place where bicycles
are ridden and tested, talked about and design fettled.
There’s everything going for it here, a setting in the heart of

The start of S.Martino Testing Ground is underway, a place
where the co-ordination of a system to analyse and improve
the European bicycle will be taking place. The driving force
is Pietro Boselli, a man who has a good sense of humour
and a liking for seeing the funny side of life,. He described
this scheme as being the way forward for the European bicycle industry. “We can meet and discuss bicycles, we can
ride them and take time with the testing and evaluation. It is
an ideal place to be when doing such work”.

for a change of approach to the content of TAG. Although still primarily a

diversified to include more of the fun
and the lifestyle that surround riders
of not only scooters, but quads,
minimotos and light motorcycles as
well. Writing styles and page design
will change in line with the new look
and there is likely to be a few saucy
glamour shots to spice up the pages
for the readers.

Behind the success of the Sym Jet are some very happy dealers.
That the Jet model hit high peaks among Britain’s top selling scooters in 2004 is
a matter of record, but then that’s what’s expected with a machine like this. The
Jet is a pretty profitable sale, it’s a quality scooter with minimal demand for
after-sales support and then, to keep the young buyer happy, there’s that

Ten Moore Large dealers also had happy times following the 2004 sales

Steven Walsh
back in charge
Recent trading difficulties
have resulted in Steven Walsh taking
back the majority shareholding in the
Concept Cycling Group he sold to
management in 2003. After an extended period during which the Concept Cycling Group fell short of the targets required by investors in the
buyout , the management invited
Steven Walsh to re-invest and to take
control again.
It is reported that over the past few
weeks Steven Walsh has been reviewing all options and having the full support of the Concept Board he has decided to step back into the company
as Chairman and Managing Director.
As a result of the restructuring
Robert Pollard has resigned from the
Concept Board of Directors to pursue
business interests outside of the bicycle industry.
“The Company needs to return to a
more hands-on style of management
to weather current market conditions”
said Pollard. “We can now get on with
the business of returning Concept to
profitability as soon as possible” says
Steven Walsh.

Realising this is a rewarding market, bike
supplier Mission have continued the development of
trikes for children, especially those with a disability.
Achieved by working closley with therapists and schools
they have changed styling to accommodate a rider’s
special needs. On top of Chopper Trike with 16 and 20"
wheels there’ll soon be a trike with back rest support
and flat pedals for teenagers.
Now Mission need thinking dealers who can see the
potential and work to help deliver the full package. And
deliver is the key word because a trike needs a little
more space to display and get to the customer. “Our
need is to find dealers willing to work this potential” says
Mission boss Dave Wilsher. “We already have quite a
few counties covered but there are areas where we have
no dealerships and twice in the last few days we have
had to ask a school to travel many miles to Threadgolds
of Withenshawe to collect trikes from that shop”.
“Our marketing and publicity attracts direct enquiries
from potential customers all over the country, and we
can then involve the local dealer. But when that dealer
says they can’t deliver a trike on to a disabled customer,
what can we then do? Supplying direct is not really the
option we want, and with the Disability market so huge I
know dealers are missing out. We have to consider the
right to supply direct if we can’t find a retailer who can
help these customers”.
And it’s not just with trikes that the market has a good
response - “The new Piggyback Trike is selling well, It
is terrific for kids with balance problems. A new chrome
16" Trike will be available in the summer with BMX style
parts for yougsters with disabilties, they want to look as
cool as able bodied youngsters. Also available are back
rest with harness and sensible and the easy to use self
levelling pedals. “We’ve put lots of thought into how the
product works, what we now need is an expanded and
responsive dealer network” explains Dave Wilsher.

A campaign is underway to
get Londoners onto their bikes this
spring and summer - the Transport for
London office has commissioned three
‘infomercials’ . The one minute films are
about different types of cyclists, with
families, young professionals and
young people declaring their positive
experiences of cycling in London.
The aim of the infomercials is to get
Londoners to dust down their bikes and
get out and about to enjoy the capital.
Recent research shows that cycling in
London is growing faster than anywhere
in the UK, but there are thousands of
unused bikes on balconies, gardens,
sheds and garages. Rose Ades, Head
of London’s Cycling Centre of Excellence, said: “Cycling is a great way to
enjoy the parks and get a fresh view of
London, particularly now that facilities
are improving and there are many more
cyclists around.
“Unfortunately there are lots of bikes
around that have not been out for a spin
in years.
TfL is committed to making London a
safe and cycle friendly city and is increasing investment in cycling by 40%
in 2005/06 to improve the safety and
convenience of cycling. More secure
cycling parking facilities are being provided, too - 5000 spaces on street, 5000
spaces at schools, all by the end of
2005/6. There is also state of the art
cycle interchange at rail and tube stations.
