Did you know your aluminum cans can help the shelter? We cash
in aluminum cans and use the funds for shelter operations. Anyone
wishing to drop off aluminum cans at the new shelter may now do
so. There is an open-top wooden container located on the south side
of the building. Also, if you would like to drop cans off at Behr
Recycling directly, just let them know to credit the GCHS account.
Become a Foster
At times, GCHS has animals that require more individualized
attention than the shelter can provide. Our Foster Program is
designed to place these animals in private homes for specialized
care for up to 60 days.
While fostering an animal (or a litter of animals) can be fun, it is a big
responsibility and has its own unique challenges. If, after reviewing
the Foster Program materials, you wish to volunteer your time,
commitment, and skill in fostering an animal in need, we encourage
you to return a foster home application to the shelter. You can find
the full Foster Program materials on our website,
www.greencountyhumane.org, as well as at the shelter.

GCHS Fall Pet Reminders
1. In or Out? Does your pet spend most of its time outside? You may want to bring them indoors during the freezing months, especially if it gets bitterly cold in your area. No one wants
an icicle for a pet, they are just not as cuddly.
2. Bare Naked Truth. If you must keep your pet outdoors, remember your pet’s fur coat isn’t
enough protection for the bitter cold winter. Give your pet a warm, dry, and draft free shelter
outside.
3. No More Frozen Dinners! Did you know that it takes more energy to stay warm when it's
cold? Outdoor animals eat more during the winter, so make sure they have plenty of food
as well as water. Make sure to keep an eye on the water bowls and make sure they haven’t
turned into little skating rinks.
4. Escape artisits. Pets are more likly to escape during the holidays with more people coming
and going from your house. Make sure your pet’s tag and microchip information is up to date,
this will make it much easier to get your pet home.

placing a bench, ottoman, or piece of carpeted plywood on four cement blocks. Teach your dog to
jump onto the low table, then sit or lie down for five
seconds, then jump off. Ta-da!
Backyard tunneling. Using a nylon pipe tunnel,
coax your dog inside it with food. Run alongside the
tunnel or sit at the other end to persuade him through.
Reward your dog with toys or food at the end.
Enthusiastic fetching. Flyball dogs are rapid
fetchers. To build your dog’s excitement, throw the
ball, hold him back for 10 seconds, and then let him
sprint after it.
Hide and seek. Teach tracking skills by showing
your dog a toy and hiding it in an easy to find location. Once he gets the hang of the game, ask friends
to walk away from your dog to a hiding place in the
yard. Ready or not, here he comes. As your dog’s
skills improve, have your dog sit with his back turned
while everyone else hides.

I have a sick/injured animal and cannot afford the vet bills. Can GCHS cover the cost of
treatment?
Unfortunately, we cannot. GCHS is a shelter for homeless animals, not an animal heathcare facility. We do not have veterinarians
on staff and our monetary resources must be used to care for the animals in the shelter.
Why does GCHS only hold an animal for seven days? Why can’t they be held longer to give
an owner more time to find their pet?
Unfortunately, our resources are limited and we are not able to hold animals indefinitely. Getting animals into forever homes as
soon as possible helps us keep costs in line, reduces stress to the animals, and allows us to help more animals in need.
We were told the shelter cannot take in any cats, as it is full, but we see open condos in the
adoption rooms. Why is GCHS saying they are full?
All animals arriving at GCHS are isolated from the general population for at least seven days. This keeps the general population
safe from potential diseases, allows time for veterinary exams, and behavioral assessment. In addition, animals that are ill or have
special needs are generally kept in isolation-this includes kittens. GCHS has two isolation rooms and one overflow room for cats.
When thses cages are full, as they often are during kitten season, we cannot take any more cats for the safety and health of the
healthy adoptable population.
What does GCHS require for me to claim my pet?
Wisconsin state law (Chapter 173.23) requires us to ask for reasonable proof of ownership. This could include veterinary records,
rabies certificate, or municipal license. It also specifies that any licensure or required vaccination fees be paid prior to release. This
means that any animal leaving the shelter must have a current rabies vaccination as required by law, either given by the shelter
veterinarian or prepaid at your own veterinarian. Green County also requires dog licenses, so their fees will be assessed if an
animal is unlicensed.
What role does GCHS have in animal seizures?
Only law enforcement can seize an aniaml. GCHS contracts with Green County and the City of Monroe to provide care for seized
animals while a case is ajudicated. These animals are not the property of GCHS and we work under the direction of the law enforcement and courts involved in the matter.
What kind of aniamls does the shelter take in?
The shelter only takes domestic cats and dogs.
